SWwrestling got a reaction from backtothemat in State tournament class statistics to not necessarily incite class wrestling discussion
So I have coached at Southern Wells for 16 years. We have an enrollment of around 250 students. Obviously I am for classing the team side of the tournament because I feel like that is a no brainer. However when it comes to the Individual tournament I love the one class. We have had success sending multiple guys down to the State Tournament but Semi-State Qualifiers are a big deal for our school and our wrestling team as well. We have had a wrestler at the Semi-State tournament for each of the past 16 years and that is a streak we are extremely proud of. Are the expectations different being a wrestler from Southern Wells or a wrestler from Indianapolis Cathedral, well yeah I guess. But when you have a special group like we did at Southern Wells this year and take 3 guys down to the State Finals and wrestle against Crown Point, Penn, and Cathedral on Friday night, what else is better than that! These 3 guys deserved to wrestle on the biggest stage against the biggest schools and best wrestlers in the State.

I've been wrestling around the same amount of time you have been coaching. I have seen wrestlers take an injury default and walk around fine five minutes later a few minutes later. I think if you could. By saying "hey you're injury defaulting you can't wrestle the rest of the day. Understand that." You're giving then mmm the option to choose. You're really allowing the wrestler to pick and choose what match they want to wrestle in with the ways the rules are now. "No I'm not good enough to wrestle and finish the match, but I can wrestle the next match." It softens the sports.

A story I have is this,
A year ago at Goshen Regionals first round one of the Gimson boys from Jimtown was winning his match by a wide margin. He got called for an illegal body slam, and this kid seemed hurt. I really respected what the East Noble coaches did... they knew their kid wouldn't be able to finish the match, but they started the time let it run one second and then stopped the time  and then lost the match.  The coaches knew that Gimson was going to place at state (he did). This coach got crap from the fans for sure, and the coaches I talked to throughout the day said they don't know that they would be able to do that. I know that this sort of argues for allowing injury defaults, but a majority of the coaches said they don't know if they could do that. Keeping that in the back of my mind, It's easy for coaches to say they'd do the right thing, but when it all comes down to it, a lot of then would have a hard time not taking their kid to semi-state, state, the finals etc. I think by giving the option to pick and choose which match they wrestle in gives them the idea that they get to go farther. Either way the rules are the rules, and I'm just for good hard wrestling. There can always be talk about ways to improve the sport. I'm here to learn.

The rule was interpreted correctly by the officials. The question of it being a true false start is not so clear in the video. I will try and post video at some point. Just like many things in life it is when the rule or situation is abused. I have coached for many years and never have been put in the situation that the Oak Hill coaching staff was put into on Saturday. I believe in all my heart I know what I would have done in the situation. However the problem and the "unfortunate situation" that this rule caused was that Josh Beeks will never get the opportunity that he has earned by working hard and puttting himself in the best possible situation you can by entering the Semi-State tournament has a Regional champ, will never happen. 30 secs. into the match a "Caution" ended the kids career and his dream of being a State Qualifier.

The referee is obligated to tell you if you are using injury time or recovery time. You may have not known but your head coach was fully aware of what time was being used.

What injury?  Not being mean, but Hardcastle won the semi state after his injury...Crappy situation...as boomer implied earlier...wrestle backs could help this...both are tough kids...we don't know who would've won...just sucks to see a career end like that.  I know that Coach Landis does a fantastic job with SW and I was rooting for him

Nope not assuming the outcome of the match...just wanted the opportunity for Josh to earn it, that's my point. A caution for a false start ended a wrestlers career!

I know and understand that Hardcastle has dreams of being a State Qualifier and that is why I said nothing negative about him. What I was frustrated with was that Josh wasn't given the opportunity because of a "Caution" and a questionable one at that. I was not impressed with the Oak Hill coaching staff and how they handled the situation and am pretty sure they are aware of that. I am sorry for the subtle comments I will make them clear!

Here is the video from mats side and you tell me what whistle Josh went on? There were all kinds of whistles on mat 2 and if you watch referees hand motion looks to be a clean start?

I was at the Al Smith and I was the official most of the Day on Mat one. Name is Leo Mercado, and I truly work really hard to make sure I stay consistent with the rules of our sport and apply them like the rulebook states to apply them. I typically don't like to throw jabs at anyone and I hope that this doesn't come out as a jab to anyone or anything; but I truly work hard to make sure my signals, mechanics, interpretations, and rules applications of the sport are delivered clearly and consistent throughout the whole match in the whole entire arena, so that even the deaf man at the nosebleed seats can understand my call. If you don't want me calling a "bad" match for your kid, scratch me like any other coach does in the our state because I apply the rules the way they should be applied.
