It would be a huge surprise if we had multiple national champs from IN. Escobedo is too banged up to repeat, I have a hard time believing that Tsirtsis will be able to get off bottom in crunch time, Kinser may AA, but he won't win, Howe is probably a year away. Right now, I'd say Humphrey has the best shot, but he's in a very deep, tough weight class. I guess if the stars aligned properly we could get multiple champs, but it's very unlikely.
My question is, which school will step up and bring enough fans to fill up half of Center Grove's gym? Without MD's following, will Team State make any money? ;D
Congratulations Castle. Biggest win in school history. Here' s to hoping the title comes back to SW Indiana.
This is the first loss by MD to a team south of Indy in probably 25-30 years. I don't think Goebel ever lost to a team from S. Indiana.
I guess I'm struggling to see what has changed so much since December?? Other than Lennie May not in the line up for MD and Sietz in the line up for Castle?? Both teams have improved through the year, but I'm certain Castle has not wrestled the schedule that Mater Dei has.
Has everyone forgotten a couple of things:
1. MD Schedule is incredibly hard and prepares them for tough competition match in and match out.
2. MD has one of the toughest rooms in the state - The kids themselves are tough as nails and you have State Champions & State Places helping and pushing them to success.
3. MD kids have been in pressure situations since they were very young and always find a way to rise to the occasion.
My money is on MD.
I'm quite certain MD will win, but I do think it will be closer than the dual in December. The only real question is what kind of ratty sweat suit will Harmon be wearing?
103 - Maj MD
112 - dec Castle
119 - dec MD
125 - Maj MD
130 - dec Castle
135 - dec Castle
140 - dec MD
145 - dec MD
152 - dec Castle
160 - Maj MD
171 - Maj Castle
189 - Pin Castle
215 - dec Castle
285 - Pin MD
27-25 MD wins it. 130-152 all have the potential to go either way. It should be a great dual. Bonus points will decide this one.
Ritter was lucky to even be in the finals. He got a gift of an escape at the end of regulation against King in the semi's. To his credit, he won it in OT, but it never should have went to OT. I saw a lot of strange calls and the refs seemed to be unsure of themselves in many situations.
What was up with the Reitz assistant and Harmon jawing back and forth during and after the 152 final. Way to set an example for your wrestleres fellas. I know that in the heat of the moment things happen, but that was ridiculous.
Bonus points is what won it for MD. MD scored 34.5 bonus points while Castle only managed 14.5. You've got to pick up pins if you are going to beat MD.
140 Chad Raben???
215 Unfried???
coughlin wrestled 152
and chip elderkin is my soon to be uncle lol haha small friggin world isnt it
I'm thinking Brett McDurmon at 140 (6th in '91). I put Coughlin at 160 because that is where he won his fargo title.
Yea he had to run from DJ Radnovich to win that 2nd state title!
Why would he run from him? Talamantes beat him in the semi-finals on his junior year.
edit: Hammer beat me to it.
MD shuts out Central. Central only has 13 wrestlers total...no jv
MD drops 2 matches against North
Sorry, don't know the team scores. This is just what was told to me by somebody that was there.
I have the same dilemma. My son turns 4 next month and he likes to wrestle around with me in the living room. He'll be in pre-k next fall and they allow them to start wrestling at that age. My wife isn't so sure. Anyway, we bumped into Randy Helfrich last night and my wife asked him if kids really need to start wrestling at age 4 to be good. He said, "No, they can wait until they are 4 1/2" ;D
I am planning to introduce him to wrestling next winter. He he likes it, great. If not, no big deal. He'll also be introduced to t-ball this summer and possibly soccer this fall. If you get them involved in more than one activity, then the risk of burn out is not there. Now, if you have a 4 year old wrestling year round, that's another story.
Is this the same David Jackson that wrote for the Courier back in the early 90's? If so, he did some good stuff back then. We should expect more coverage if it is the same guy.
What happened to the old board? Was there some sort of falling out, technical difficulties, etc? I didn't check the board much until recently and couldn't open any of the topics. Then I saw this board on line. What gives?
Wow, no Matt Coughlin? 4x finalist and 2x state champ. This is definelty a hard line up to crack!
He's at 160...just a typo. I started to put Coughlin at 152 and Nick Mayer at 160, but changed my mind and went with Armentano at 52 and Coughlin at 60.
I don't think both will win. Angel has a better chance. If Alex can't get off bottom, then he won't win. He should be a high all american, but after 4+ years in the Iowa room he still can't get off bottom. Gallick rode him like a mule and came very close to turning him. To Alex's credit, he did what he had to do to win. I would expect him to keep future matches with Gallick on their feet. Then again, maybe I'm wrong.
Here's one for Mater Dei, just off the top of my head.
103 Gabe Zirkelback
112 Chip Elderkin
119 Rusty Head
125 Buzz Mieras
130 Craig Weinzapfel
135 Crag Elpers
140
145 Bret Schnur
152 Matt Armentano
160 Matt Coughlin
171 Blake Maurer
189 Jake Schneider
215
Hvy John Barnes
I'm drawing a blank at 140 and 215. I know we've had some good ones at 140, but 215 has been kind of barren for us.
