My son never placed at Folkstate….. until he started playing travel baseball and his wrestling season got cut in half. His best year was last year (year 7 for him) and it was the least amount he has ever wrestled. Maybe 20-25 (rough guess) matches from Thanksgiving to Folk state.

Thanks for the A1 compliment General, but ironically enough my Mom and Dad raised me and my brothers with Country Bob's always stocked in the fridge.  I have been fortunate to have been around some very good people, first as an athlete and then as a coach.  Extremely grateful for my friendship with Coach Pompei and the opportunity he has given me to coach at Indiana Tech, which allows me to continue to be surrounded by some A-1 individuals.

The Indiana Tech student-athletes are arriving back on campus, and there is a lot of buzz amongst the men's and women's wrestling teams about the Warrior RTC.   We are all pumped to get in the wrestling facility and get better together.  It is going to be a super neat training environment and a unique opportunity for elementary, middle school, and high school athletes to supplement their wrestling training year-round with college athletes and college coaches of one of the very best NAIA wrestling programs in the country.  We are excited to be a resource to help athletes of all ages reach their goals both on and off the mat!

Coaches Summit & Open House Week is just 2 weeks away!  The goal of the Coaches Summit on Sunday August 29 from 4:00pm-6:00pm will be to get our youth, high school, and college coaches together under one roof and discuss how TOGETHER we can enhance the wrestling environment in Fort Wayne and the surrounding area!  Open House Week is where athletes, parents, and coaches can come check out the facility and meet the coaches and get a workout in for free.  We will get a drill in, show some technique, and wrestle quite a bit of live at the Open House Workouts. The Open House nights will be Sunday 8/29, Monday 8/30, and Wednesday 9/1 from 6:00pm-8:00pm.  Our Fall Session will officially begin on Sunday, September 5 with a Beginners Group, Elem/MS Elite Group, and HS/College Group.  More information can be found at www.warriorrtc.com contact info@warriorrtc.com if you have any questions.

Just Cancel the Season or Push back until the pandemic is controlled....unfortunately wrestling is one of the worst sports with this thing around. No reason to risk health of the students and other people for high school athletics. Im sure thats not a popular opinion around here but what ya gonna do 🤷‍♂️. This is up there with practicing Bulimia to make weight, it's just not healthy and in the  long term causes more problems than it solves. That's Nicky Dubz's 2 Cents that no one asked for.

    Coach McClurg,

Duane gave me my 1st college loss (8-6) in the quarters of the Indiana Little State held at Taylor University in December of 1980. He placed 3rd and I finished a disappointing 6th. The next year, I beat him in the Little State finals (8-8, 7-1 / OT) at home (Wabash) PICTURED. We never wrestled again, I believe partially because he was also a football player at ICU and had to pull too much weight to make 190 easily early in the season. I stayed down at 190 because ICU also had a giant of a man at HWT named Wade Hall that was an AA prior to Duane in 1985.

bgcoach reacted to Wrestling Scholar in State tournament class statistics to not necessarily incite class wrestling discussion
Here's some info the Scholar compiled related to the new classifications from performance at State.

State champion by class based on team points. There's been a discussion in the past about recognizing champions with this method  IHSAA does not recognize the classifications.
    4A- Indy Cathedral
    3A-Roncali
    2A- Bellmont, Northwood
    1A-Shenandoah

    State Qualifiers
    4A-  92 or 41.1%
    3A - 57 or  25.4%
    2A - 53 or 23.7%
    1A- 22 or  9.8%

    State Placers
    4A- 51 or 45.5%
    3A - 26 or 23.2%
    2A- 24 or 21.4%
    1A- 11 or 9.8%

    Analysis
Again the bigger schools dominate  again with class 4a with 11% of the schools getting 41% of qualifiers and 45% of placers.
Class 1A gets roughly 10% of placers and Qualifiers.
Surprisingly 3A and 2A are very similar statistically with 3A slightly beating out 2A.

Indiana probably will never have class wrestling, but are the smaller schools really happy with this?  You have some great athletes that will always have a very difficult time getting recognized at the state level.  Its just accepted  in Indiana,  and I have mentioned before that many small schools embrace the "Hoosier syndrome".  "Hoosier Syndrome" is the small school mentality that the small schools can compete with the big guys and occasionally pull off the big upset, and that's better  than just competing against the little guys,  a theme essentially inspired in the movie "Hoosiers". We've had the argument if it affects participation and stats are inconclusive in my opinion.     Ive been around and seen both sides.

Just to explain another perspective.  Back in my home state "Kansas",  they are a believer in class wrestling and are immersed in class wrestling.  Ive discussed with some Kansans in the wrestling community and they have a hard time wrapping  there heads around one class.    But the state tournament there is broken into 4 classes similar to the surrounding states.  Its seriously flawed in that they wrestle the tournament in 3 locations.   The small class (made up of about 70 schools) goes out to a small town in Western Kansas called Hays and have their own tournament.  They host the tournament at Ft Hays State a D2 college wrestling program.    Most of the towns in western Kansas are small, so its geographically centered where most of the small schools are.     But the joy of it is there's a lot of kids and fans that get to participate.  Hotels are sold out,  and restaruants are busy during this weekend.  There's caravans of cars with windows  painted going to  state.  They really embrace it and love they get to spend the night at a hotel.    The ironic thing is the small school wrestlers  think they're great because they qualified and believe there level is close  to the bigger classes.  Its tremendously watered down level of wrestling compared to Indiana,  but the kids are ignorant of that and they believe that qualifying for state is just as  big of achievement as it is in any other state like Indiana.  Ignorance is bliss, but they kids are proud and having a good time.

I wasn’t in the room but have a lot of buddies who were. I’d say the lack of D1’s stemmed from a lot of them being country boys who joined the family business. They had zero aspirations of college but would’ve excelled at wrestling if they chose that path.

I know I'll get pelted with empties from any poster that starts with "SW" and I respect Mr. Goebel (sic) immensely, but maybe it's time to put a third guy on the show? And might I recommend @ontherise219 for that position? Now hear me out....

How many times last night did he mention "I'm not familiar with that wrestler..." or "IndianaMat ranks him...". Well, the actual ranker does some media stuff for the actual sight that does the rankings oft quoted, and since he does the rankings pretty well it appears, he does seem to know a bit about most/all the wrestlers and not just the ones at the E'ville SS. Again, nothing personal, and as far as the actual call of the finals matches goes I think Mr. Goebel is great and knows his stuff and adds insight, but for a parings show I'd just like to hear a bit more insight/matchups etc and think OTR could provide that. Of course the hour and fifteen minute time frame might be tough but he wouldn't have @Y2CJ41 to throw him off topic.

Like I said, unpopular opinion.. but outside of the ESS dudes there just didn't seem to be much insight or info put out there except "that should be a good quarter bracket".

Is a must for what? The training "365 a year" is a big downfall to this whole conversation. We've lost casual wrestlers because a combination of things.  But training every day of the year is going to drop retention rates terribly.
Youth are getting burnt out from a youth season that starts in November and ends in March. But "if you want to be good you need to do Freestyle and Greco too." So now youth wrestling can be until May. It's no wonder that retention rate of athletes and coaches is so low.
This isn't just wrestling, but the youth sports culture is so out of control that parents are pulled 100 different directions. It's easy to stop taking their child to wrestling when they have to travel for wrestling, baseball and basketball, etc...

At the high school level, we are asking our kids to train year round because we want them to be the best. But at smaller schools where those athletes do more than 1 sport they don't have time to train year round for 2 or 3 sports. I know coaches that get upset at athletes that aren't there all summer and spring, but if you want to know the truth, those part-time athletes are what is going to keep this sport competitive at semi-state and regional levels. We can't diminish their value because they aren't a state placer or aren't there every off-season practice. More participants will always help increase the competition level.

As many of you know, my hometown of Pendleton was hit by a tornado this week. In spite of the tremendous damage there were no fatalities and only one injury which was, thankfully, not life threatening. While I love my hometown, the community I am referring to in the title is the Indiana Wrestling community. I have received numerous calls from wrestling coaches checking on my family's welfare and offering assistance. Coach Duncan and some of his Frankton Eagle wrestlers came down to help in the cleanup this week. I am profoundly grateful to have as rivals such friends who took the time to reach out. Our town will recover and be better than before, albeit without as many trees. The wrestling community will always be a source of strength and pride for me, like it is for all of you. Thank you all for your caring and concern. Local charities are accepting donations but if you are of a mind to contribute may I humbly recommend the Red Cross in your community. They were on the scene almost immediately after the storm and set up a relief center at the high school. I encountered another Red Cross team today during my visit to a site where some of our wrestlers will be working tomorrow to assist a local wrestling family. The RC volunteers assured me they would be in town until they help everyone get back on their feet.
