  3. HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING: Jeff repeats as sectional champions Devils earn consecutive titles for the first time in school history By KEVIN HARRIS Kevin.Harris@newsandtribune.com JEFFERSONVILLE ? The Jeffersonville wrestling team?s history-making season continued on Saturday at Johnson Arena. Two weeks after winning their second straight Hoosier Hills Conference championship for the first time, the Red Devils repeated as Jeff Sectional champions for the first time in program history. Eight Jeff wrestlers each won sectional titles, six by major decision, in helping the team score 283 points and advance to Wednesday?s Jasper Team Regional. Ten Jeff grapplers reached the finals and 13 of the 14 Red Devils moved on to next Saturday?s Jeff Individual Regional. The top four wrestlers in each weight class qualified for the individual regional. Even though he was pleased to see his squad collect back-to-back sectional crowns, Red Devil head coach Danny Struck says his troops have bigger goals in mind like reaching the IHSAA Team State Finals on Saturday, Feb. 27 at Center Grove. ?It?s not something we ever really talk about,? Struck said about the sectional repeat. ?State finals is what we focus on every day. The senior class started wrestling for me in fifth grade, and in fifth grade they wanted to reach state. But it?s nice to finally be able to say our program is established, and for the time being not being overshadowed by other local teams. ?I can?t lie - it feels really good.? Jeff?s seven No. 1 seeds each took care of business and captured sectional titles. Those grapplers were Alonzo Shepherd (103 pounds), Curtis Smith (112), Devon Miller (119), Renaldo Weekley (135), Brandon Marlin (160), Caleb Browner (171) and Nelson Bowen (189). For Smith, it was his third sectional championship in his career. The senior is four victories away from becoming the all-time wins leader in Red Devil history. Jeff?s eighth sectional champ was junior Jimmy Pratt in the 215-pound division. The No. 2 seed downed top-seeded Ryan DeWitt of Corydon by a major decision in the final, 14-4. It was Pratt?s first sectional title. Finishing second for the Devils were Sean Simpson (130) and Elijah Curtlay (285). Teammate Kevin Castro (125) placed third and Jeff?s fourth-place finishers were Tre Harbin (140) and Damon Dryden (145). ?I?d trade a sectional championship for all 14 to qualify for regional. It means a lot to them to move on,? Struck said. ?Out of our 10 in the finals, only three were seniors and those three seniors were champs. So we?re excited about seven returning finalists for next year.? Despite no sectional champions, Floyd Central placed second in the team standings with 208 points. Ten Highlanders earned trips to Jeff next weekend, led by runner-up finishers Zach Thomas (112), Tom Denny (135) and Ben Moberly (145). Six Floyd wrestlers placed third. They were Caleb Happel (103), Aaron Witt (130), Drew Denny (140), Shane Sneed (160), Jacob Faulkenburg (171) and Andrew Sharp (215). Sophomore Eric Foster (152) collected a fourth-place finish. New Albany finished third with 178 points and had the second-most sectional champions with three. The trio of champs were Tim Martin (130), Larry Rickman (140) and Taylor Hoke (285). Rickman and Hoke each won their respective finals in overtime. Six other Bulldogs got regional berths. Freshman Tre Marler (125) and junior Zack Faith (189) each placed second, while Austin Jamison (112) was third. Finishing fourth for New Albany were Joshua Coomer (103), Matthew O?Connell (160) and Cody Leasor (215). Charlestown, projected to finish second, wound up fourth with 176 points. Four Pirates were runners-up in Taylor Newcomb (140), Mark Daugherty (152), Jacob Hall (160) and Ethan Bowen (171). Placing third for Charlestown were Justin Wolf (119), Cory Suddeth (145) and John Slaten (285). Fourth-place finishers for the Pirates were Bryan Lowery (112), Jason Beevers (135) and David Enteman (189). Senior Jacob Golembeski led Providence to a sixth-place finish with 87 points. Golembeski was the Pioneers? lone sectional champion, as he defeated Daugherty in the 152 final by a 5-0 decision. It was Golembeski?s second sectional title. ?It?s great. It?s a blast,? Golembeski said. ?I wrestled him last year in the sectional finals and he?s a good wrestler. I?ll probably see him next week. It?s going to be a good regional.? Two other Providence wrestlers earned regional berths. Senior Joey Libretto (189) finished third, while sophomore Brennen Gregory (119) placed fourth. New Washington senior Josh Sampson won his first-ever sectional crown, beating Moberly in the 145-pound final 2-0. Sampson, the only wrestler in Mustang history to finish the regular season undefeated, improved his record to 39-0. ?It feels really good to get that out of the way and under my belt,? Sampson said. ?This is something I really wanted. I?ve been looking forward to this all year. Last year, I got upset in the sectionals and I wanted to kind of redeem myself from that.? New Washington was seventh with 70 1/2 points. Two other Mustangs will join Sampson at regional. Freshman Brady Meenach (119) wound up second, and junior Lane Massingham (135) finished third. Two Christian Academy of Indiana wrestlers moved on to regional. Junior Levi Speth (152) finished third and junior Cory Neel (125) placed fourth. The Warriors were eighth with 49 points. 6. WRESTLING: Red Devils trying to pull off sectional repeat By KEVIN HARRIS Kevin.Harris@newsandtribune.com Nearly two weeks ago, the Jeffersonville wrestling team made history by repeating as Hoosier Hills Conference champions for the first time ever. On Saturday at Johnson Arena, the Red Devils will attempt to pull off another unprecedented repeat. Jeff will vie to win back-to-back sectional championships for the first time ever. Based on seeding, the Red Devils are the favorites to win their second sectional crown in a row and their third title in the last four seasons. Jeff head coach Danny Struck says his entire team has had its sights set all season on pulling off the double repeat. ?The kids have had a goal of winning back-to-back sectional and HHC titles, as no team here has done that. So this will be another item pushing them toward knowing their dream of a state finals is a reality,? Struck said. ?It has been fun winning the last two of three. But to do that, it takes 365 days of effort. It is not an easy task. No task worth achieving is easy, so my kids are very proud of it.? The Red Devils have the most No. 1 seeds in the sectional with seven. Leading Jeff will be senior Curtis Smith, who is the top seed in the 112-pound division. Smith has won two sectional titles along with three regional crowns in his prep career. Another returning sectional champion for the Devils was Alonzo Shepherd, the No. 1 seed at 103 pounds. Jeff?s other top seeds are Devon Miller (119), Renaldo Weekly (135), Brandon Marlin (160), Caleb Browner (171) and Nelson Bowen (189). Jeff?s lone No. 2 seed is Jimmy Pratt at 215. He enters the sectional with a 30-9 record and Struck likes his chances of capturing a championship on Saturday. Despite having one top seed, Charlestown is projected to finish second. Taylor Newcomb (140) is the Pirates? lone No. 1 after claiming both a Southern Indiana Wrestling Conference and a Mid-Southern Conference title in the past two weekends. Five of Newcomb?s teammates are No. 2 seeds. The two seeds are Jeff Stotridge (125), Mark Daugherty (152), Jacob Hall (160), Ethan Bowen (171) and John Slaten (285). Charlestown comes into the sectional on a hot streak by winning its fifth consecutive MSC crown last Thursday. Head coach Adam Doherty hopes the Pirates remain on a roll on Saturday. ?The team wrestled really well and I look for them to carry their momentum into sectionals (this) weekend,? Doherty said. Floyd Central will vie to regain its sectional glory after dominating the tournament for so many seasons. The Highlanders? last sectional title was 2008. Prior to that, they won 10 consecutive sectional championships from 1997-2006. ?In order for us to win a sectional title, we will need some guys to set up and beat their seeds and get bonus points. It would also require some teams to knock off some of Jeff?s wrestlers,? Floyd head coach Brandon Sisson said. ?I would say Jeff has to be the favorite after wrestling well at conference two weeks ago. Our season and practices are scheduled to help us peak at this time of year, and I am looking forward to seeing some of our guys do well this weekend.? The Highlanders are projected to finish third, as they have one No. 1 seed and two No. 2 seeds. The lone one seed is Ben Moberly at 145, while the second seeds are Aaron Witt (130) and Zach Thomas (112). Floyd also has four No. 3 seeds in Caleb Happel (103), Tom Denny (135), Drew Denny (140) and Andrew Sharp (215). New Albany is projected to place fourth and has one top seed in Taylor Hoke at 285. Larry Rickman (140) is the Bulldogs? lone No. 2 seed, while New Albany has five three seeds in Austin Jamison (112), Tre Marler (125), Tim Martin (130), Matthew O?Connell (160) and Zack Faith (189). Providence senior Jacob Golembeski is the No. 1 seed at 152, while teammate Joey Libretto is seeded second at 189. New Washington has three No. 2 seeds in Brady Meenach (119), Lane Massingham (135) and Josh Sampson (145). Last week in the Milan Invitational, Sampson finished the regular season by winning the 145 title and becoming the first wrestler in school history to go undefeated during a campaign. The next goal for Sampson is to win his first sectional title in his career. ?As a team we are small, but are goals are not,? Mustangs? head coach Jeremy Campbell said about the sectional. ?Our kids will have to execute with precision, utilize what they know and believe. When they do these things, they have as much chance as any.? Christian Academy of Indiana has only one wrestler seeded in the top four. That grappler is junior Ethan Banet at 135. The team sectional champion will advance to the Jasper Team Regional a week from today. Individual sectional championship will move on to the Jeff Individual Regional on Saturday, Feb. 6. WRESTLERS OF THE WEEK CAI?s Caleb Delbridge, Ethan Banet and Nate Dunn Three Christian Academy of Indiana wrestlers each went 3-0 at the Jeffersonville Junior Varsity Invitational last Thursday. Delbridge and Dunn each made two pins, while Banet had one. New Washington?s Josh Sampson The senior became the first wrestler in Mustang history to finish the regular season undefeated. Sampson went 5-0 in the Milan Invitational at 145 pounds to finish the perfect regular season. He will be vying for his first sectional title this weekend at Jeffersonville. 8. WRESTLING WEDNESDAY: Jeff favored to repeat as HHC champions http://www.news-tribune.net/highschoolsports/local_story_012235051.html New Albany, Floyd projected to finish in top four By KEVIN HARRIS Kevin.Harris@newsandtribune.com Last year around this time, the Jeffersonville wrestling team did something it had not accomplished in almost 25 years ? win the Hoosier Hills Conference title. On Saturday at Jennings County High School, the Red Devils will attempt to achieve something they have never done ? claim back-to-back conference titles. Jeff is the favorite heading into the HHC meet. According to the meet seeding, the 14th-ranked Red Devils are projected to capture the crown by 23 points over the host Panthers. New Albany and Floyd Central are projected to finish third and fourth, respectively. ?Our current kids want to win it badly, so that they can leave their mark as one of the best Jeff wrestling teams of all time, doing something no one else has done,? Jeff head coach Danny Struck said. ?We have a good chance, but hopefully we don?t leave it to chance and we put it more up to hard work in and out of season.? Jeff and Jennings have the most No. 1 seeds in the tourney with five apiece. The five Red Devil top seeds are Alonzo Shepherd (103 pounds), Curtis Smith (112), Devon Miller (119), Renaldo Weekly (135) and Caleb Browner (171). Smith, a senior, will be trying to make a little history himself on Saturday. If he takes first in the 112 division, Smith will become the third wrestler in Jeff history to claim four conference championships in his career. Weekly and Browner, who are both currently ranked in the top 16 in the state in their respective divisions, each claimed a conference crown last season. The four No. 2 seeds for Jeff are Darien Tatgenhorst (152), Brandon Marlin (160), Nelson Bowen (189) and Jimmy Pratt (215). ?The HHC is always very tough. To be a champion here, you have to earn it. There are no gimmes,? Struck said. ?Some weights here are tougher than sectional, some are not. But it gives us a good gauge going into the state tourney as what we need to focus on going into that phase of the season.? New Albany enters the meet with two No. 1 seeds. Senior Tim Martin is the favorite at 130 pounds and fellow senior Larry Rickman is the top seed at 140. The Bulldogs have a pair of two seeds in Tre Marler (125) and Taylor Hoke (285). ?We have a lot of young kids, so I think we will finish in the middle of the pack somewhere,? New Albany head coach Eric Burres said. ?We should have some champs along with several place winners. This tournament is always competitive with some good matches.? Ben Moberly (145) is Floyd Central?s No. 1 seed. The Highlanders have four No. 2 seeds in Caleb Happel (103), Aaron Witt (130), Tom Denny (135) and Drew Denny (140). The Red Devils think it is critical for them to have a great performance on Saturday so they can have some momentum entering the postseason in more than two weeks. The state tournament will start on Saturday, Jan. 30 with the Jeff Sectional. The Red Devils are the defending champions. ?It is important to the team as we have had such a grueling season,? Struck said about attaining that momentum. ?They need a good tourney to give them confidence that we have done the right things all year. We have some kids on our team that are waiting to see the results of all this effort, and we want them to see that good things happen to those that work hard. We feel they will see that this weekend.? Burres says building late-season momentum in the HHC meet is important for his team as well. ?You always want to see your kids wrestle well toward the end of the year because that confidence and momentum will carry over into the state tournament series,? Burres said. SOUTHERN INDIANA WRESTLING CONFERENCE MEET While the area?s big three schools will be competing in the HHC, the other four local squads will be wrestling in the Southern Indiana Wrestling Conference meet on Saturday at Southwestern. Those teams are Charlestown, Christian Academy of Indiana, New Washington and Providence. The Pioneers will be led by senior Jacob Golembeski, who is the top seed at 152. Teammate Joey Libretto is the No. 2 seed at 189, and Providence?s Jordan Kaelin is seeded third at 140. Pioneer co-coach Patrick Fleming considers his team an underdog entering the meet. ?I think that we have a chance of being a black horse team and winning the tournament,? Fleming said. ?Our guys have progressed really well this year and continue to get better every week. I expect all three of them to be in the finals and a couple of our other wrestlers have a decent shot of upsetting some of the higher seeds. There are several really good wrestlers in each weight class and I?m looking forward to seeing some good matches.? Along with trying to compete for the SIWC crown, Fleming says the conference meet is crucial for his wrestlers to improve their seeding for the Jeff Sectional. ?Seeding can play a big part in whether or not a wrestler advances throughout the postseason,? Fleming said. ?All of these teams are either sectional or regional opponents, so each match is very important. I also hope that some of our guys avenge losses from earlier in the season.? New Washington will have two top seeds at Southwestern in senior Josh Sampson (145) and Lane Massingham (135). ?There should be some good wrestling at that tournament Saturday,? Mustangs head coach Jeremy Campbell said. Seeds for Charlestown, CAI or New Washington could not be attained before press time. WRESTLERS OF THE WEEK (FOR BOTH NAT AND JEN) Providence?s Jordan Kaelin and Jacob Golembeski Both wrestlers posted 5-0 records in the Providence six-way meet last Saturday at the Robert I. Larkin Center. Those performances should give Kaelin and Golembeski momentum heading into this weekend?s Southern Indiana Wrestling Conference meet. Golembeski enters the meet as the No. 1 seed in the 160-pound division, while Kaelin is third at 140. WRESTLING RUNDOWN COMPILED BY KEVIN HARRIS JEFFERSONVILLE RED DEVILS GO 2-3 AT FRANKLIN: No. 14 Jeffersonville was one of four ranked teams competing in the Franklin six-way meet last Saturday. The Red Devils went 2-3 in dual-meet action. Jeff began the day with victories over Ben Davis and Brownsburg. But the Devils lost to Holt, Mich., which is ranked sixth in the Wolverine State, No. 5 Yorktown and No. 9 Franklin. There were several highlights on the day for Jeff. Alonzo Shepherd defeated Ben Davis? Levi Moss, who is ranked fifth in the state, by a 5-4 decision in a 103-pound match. Caleb Browner won a critical 171 match in the Yorktown matchup, and Renaldo Weekly defeated Franklin?s Cole Van Horn, Indiana?s No. 11-ranked wrestler at 135. Red Devil head coach Danny Struck was encouraged by his team?s effort against Holt despite losing to the Michigan school, 36-19. ?Two years ago, we lost to them, 76-0. Last year, we lost by 55 and this year we lost by 17. They are a great team,? Struck said. ?What a tough meet. We went 2-3, but showed lots of improvement.? The Pioneers? two victories were against Paoli and New Washington. Providence?s Jordan Kaelin (140) and Jacob Golembeski (160) each went 5-0, while teammate Joey Libretto (215) claimed three victories. ?We wrestled decently over the weekend, but I hope that we avenge some of our losses at this weekend?s SIWC tournament,? Pioneer co-coach Patrick Fleming said. ?The highlight for me from this weekend was seeing the continuous improvement in some of our younger wrestlers, particularly Jordan Kaelin at 140. This is the second six-way this year that he has gone 5-0. The hard work he puts in at practice is really paying off.? 13. HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING: Devils take second at Jeff Classic New Wash's Sampson earns first title in school history By GREG MENGELT Greg.Mengelt@newsandtribune.com JEFFERSONVILLE ? Host Jeffersonville finished second behind seventh-ranked in Saturday?s Jeff Classic, and New Washington?s Josh Sampson became the first Mustang to ever win a championship in at the Classic. The Red Devils finished 52 points behind South and finished ahead of 12th-ranked Carmel for since the Greyhounds have participated in the Classic. ?We?re happy about that,? Jeff coach Danny Struck said. ?I think as a team, as a whole, we wrestled pretty well. We?d like to win (the Jeff Classic), but we invite tough competition to help us prepare for the state final. If we can continue to make (the field) tougher, we will.? Caleb Browner was the lone winner for the Red Devils on Saturday. The 171-pound three-time champion beat Madison?s Dalton Young 19-7. ?I wrestle every match like it?s my last one to help me get better,? said Browner, who improved to 19-0 with four wins on Saturday. ?My goal is to go to state and win it.? The Red Devils had three runners-up, including 285-pound Elijah Curtley. Struck said he wasn?t sure who he was going to use at 285 pounds and was happy that he has settled on the improving sophomore. Curtley upset third seed Taylor Hoke from New Albany, then seventh seed John Slaton of Charlestown to advance to the final. In the final, Curtley was pinned by Jennings County?s James Caum. ?He got beat in the final, but he did a fantastic job,? Struck said. Devon Miller advanced to the final in the 119-pound weight class, where he was beaten for the first time this season by Muncie South?s Isiah Bradley. Miller led 3-1 after two periods, but Bradley scored four late points for the title. ?We were disappointed with the way the calls went,? Struck said. ?But (Miller) handled it like a champion. Some kids wouldn?t have acted with so much class after losing their first match.? Ronaldo Weekly was the third runner-up for Jeff. After upsetting New Albany?s Tim Martin in the semifinals, Weekly fell to the state?s second-ranked 135 pounder ? Bloomington South?s Brannigan Barlow ? in the final, 5-3. ?That was the toughest class here,? Struck said of the 135-pound class. ?I like the way Ronaldo wrestled. He?s doing a pretty good job.? Senior Sean Simpson finished third at 130 pounds and Alonzo Shepherd was third at 103, while Jimmy Pratt finished fourth. Pratt ? Jeff?s 215 pounder ? lost a 6-5 decision to eventual champion Ron Forman of South Dearborn, then lost to Jennings County?s Mark Collett, 1-0 in the third-place match. Jeff?s Curtis Smith was fourth at 112 pounds. Sampson?s history-making day seemingly came with ease as the Mustang senior improved to 17-0 on the season. Sampson pinned his final three competitors, including Charlestown?s Taylor Newcomb in the final. ?I?m very excited,? Sampson said. ?I felt like I wasn?t doing it just for me, but for my team and New Washington High School. I?m just happy with the way things went today.? ?He makes us all believe,? New Wash coach Jeremy Campbell said. ?Josh sets his goals high and then does everything proper to make sure that he reaches his goals. It?s a condition of the individual.? New Washington finished in 13th place with 56 points on Saturday. Lane Massingham finished seventh at 135 pounds, beating Franklin County?s Jake McCoy 3-1 in double overtime in his final match. ?Our No. 1 goal is to prove that we can compete at this level, even as a small school,? Sampson said. ?I feel like we grew as a team today.? Charlestown finished sixth on Saturday and place seven wrestlers in the top seven. Jeff Stottridge (125 pounds) and Taylor Newcomb led the way with second-place finishes. Stottridge earned pins in his first two matches before falling to Carmel?s Ben Sommer in the final, 7-3. Newcomb earned a pin, a major decision and a 5-4 win over New Albany?s Larry Rickman before becoming Sampson?s final victim in 2:51 in the championship bout. Charlestown?s Mark Daugherty finished fourth at 152 pounds, as did 285 pounder John Slaton. ?We wrestled our best of the year today,? Charlestown coach Adam Daugherty said. ?We finished sixth. We would liked to have finished in the top five, but we wrestled about as well as we could have today.? New Albany finished in seventh place Saturday, but the Bulldogs had nine different wrestlers place in the meet. Tim Martin and Larry Rickman were third, while Josh Coomer and Tra Marler were both fourth-place finishers. Martin had a 21-second pin over Batesville?s Evan Puente in his first match and won a 9-1 major decision over Massingham in his quarterfinal match. After falling to Weekly in the semifinal, Martin pinned Southwestern?s Michael Brawner in 3:49 in the third-place match. ?Ultimately, he was seeded third and he finished third,? New Albany coach Eric Burres said. ?His goal coming into today was to win (the 135-pound championship). He fell a little short, but he wrestled to his seed.? Martin said he fell victim to nerves in his 5-2 loss to Weekly. ?Everyone makes mistakes and mine happened today,? Martin said of being overanxious. ?I have to learn from my mistake. He got me, but all it?s going to do is make me better.? Rickman went 3-1 on Saturday. His only loss came in a 5-4 decision to Newcomb. After the loss ? his first defeat of the season ? the senior came back to pin Southwestern?s Elijah Lauderbaugh in 3:40. ?We saw some good things today and some things we need to work on,? Burres said. ?We have a long way to go, but the same time, (the big meets are) right around the corner.?

  16. WRESTLING WEDNESDAY: Jeff Classic quite a challenge Loaded field awaits teams at annual event By KEVIN HARRIS Kevin.Harris@newsandtribune.com When he coordinates his team?s schedule every season, Jeffersonville High School wrestling coach Danny Struck attempts to find tournaments where a few opponents are more talented on paper than his own squad. His reasoning for that is to motivate his grapplers to step up to the challenge and perform at a higher level. ?My goal is to find someone to beat our team at every tourney we go to,? Struck said. ?Our kids? goal is to prove me wrong and try to beat whoever I throw at them. The goal is to do this until we go to state as a team.? That definitely holds true for the annual Jeff Classic, which will be held for the 32nd consecutive season on Saturday. This year, the Red Devils welcome seventh-ranked Bloomington South, which has four wrestlers who were IHSAA State Finals qualifiers last season and are currently ranked in the top 10 in their respective weight classes. The field also includes defending Classic champion Carmel, which is currently ranked 12th. The Classic will include eight past state qualifiers, 32 former semistate qualifiers and 16 state-ranked grapplers. ?The Jeff Classic is shaping up to be a very competitive tournament,? Struck said. ?With the addition of Carmel and Bloomington South in the past couple of years, the competition level is definitely on the rise.? The 20th-ranked Red Devils have not won their own tournament since 1991 and finished second last season. They will have two No. 1 seeds who were 2009 semistate qualifiers in Devon Miller in the 119-pound division and Caleb Browner in the 171 class. Browner is vying for his third Classic championship. Alonzo Shepherd (103) and Renaldo Weekly (135) are both No. 2 seeds. Shepherd is the defending regional champion at 103. Despite the 18-year Classic title drought, Struck states breaking that streak has not been discussed a lot inside the Jeff High wrestling room. ?We don?t talk about that much,? Struck said. ?Every day we talk about two things ? their very next match and what will it do to get you to state.? Three area teams ? New Albany, Charlestown and New Washington ? return to the Classic this season. The Bulldogs enter the Classic with eight seeded wrestlers. Three New Albany grapplers are expected to lead the Bulldog fray in Tim Martin (135), Larry Rickman (145) and Taylor Hoke (285). Martin was a state qualifier last year and is currently ranked eighth in the state. Rickman and Hoke both qualified for semistate last season. ?If we walk away with a couple of champions and a couple of place winners, then it will be a successful day for us,? Bulldog head coach Eric Burres said. ?This tournament is very competitive. There are a lot of good teams and individual wrestlers at this tournament. It will be a good weekend of wrestling.? Charlestown?s goal is to finish in the top five, as it came up one spot short of accomplishing that goal last season with a sixth-place finish. Seniors Jeff Stotridge (125), Taylor Newcomb (145) and Mark Daugherty (152) are seeded in the top three in their respective divisions and expected to lead the Pirate charge. Stotridge won the 119 Classic title last season by pinning Martin in the final. Stotridge qualified for state last year, while Newcomb and Daugherty both advanced to semistate. ?I look for my seniors to have a good showing,? said Charlestown head coach Adam Doherty, a former Jeff Classic champion as a Red Devil grappler. ?Each have a top three seed, and all have a shot at winning the tournament. Along with the three seniors, there are several others that I think will surprise people and place much higher than their seeds. There is going to be a lot of good competition Saturday. ?This meet is always kind of a midseason report card. You get to compare where you are with some of the best wrestlers in the state, and see where you need to focus for the end of the season.? New Washington head coach Jeremy Campbell has his sights set on getting at least one wrestler in the medal round (i.e. top eight). The best shot to achieve that feat is last year?s semistate qualifier Josh Sampson at 145. Sampson placed fourth at 152 in last season?s Classic. Campbell also expects Lane Massingham, Brady Meenach and Aaron Dean to have solid performances on Saturday. ?This tournament helps us the most by setting a mark to compare to,? Campbell said. ?Our kids consider themselves underdogs in all situations. We are usually the smallest school competing, and in this (tourney) they find resolve. They understand that nothing is given to them. They must earn the respect and then they must prove that they can compete. ?We will go, we will compete with intensity and we will see how that measures up.? The Jeff Classic has always been used as a meet to prepare teams for their conference and sectional, which both will take place in a month or so. Burres thinks competing in the highly competitive Classic only makes his wrestlers stronger in the future. ?Getting better is what every coach is after and any time you can wrestle against strong competition, it will only make you tougher,? he said. ?Win or lose, it is good to wrestle some of these kids early in the year, so you have time to learn from your mistakes before the state tournament series.? Struck says the Red Devils? overall schedule ? not just the Classic ? gets them ready for the Hoosier Hills Conference meet and the Jeff Sectional. ?We have already wrestled five teams in the top 20, three of them being in the top 10,? Struck said. ?We have a tough conference, and traditionally we have not been at the top of our sectional. But with tourneys like the Jeff Classic and the rest of our schedule, we are fully prepared for conference and sectional.? Along with the addition of Bloomington South, another major change with the Classic is a significantly condensed time schedule. This year, it will be a one-day tournament with weigh-ins beginning at 7:30 a.m. and an approximate ending at 4 p.m. The Classic will take place in both Johnson Arena and the upstairs auxiliary gymnasium, using a combined eight mats. The reason for this year?s shortened slate is a scheduling conflict with the Jeff boys? basketball team, which will host games on Friday and Saturday nights at Johnson Arena. In the past, the Jeff Classic has either been a two-day tournament or a one-day affair where it lasted from the early morning to the late evening. The two-day scenario happened when either a boys? or girls? basketball game was scheduled for Saturday evening. When the Classic took place in one day, usually a basketball game was scheduled for Johnson Arena on Friday evening, but no hoops home game on Saturday. ?This is a huge challenge ? one that coaches from the area have expressed concern with,? Struck said. ?But it is what it is. And just like we tell our wrestlers, we will do ourselves ? ?we will find a way to win.? We will get out in time for the basketball game. We are doing a good job with each other in making it work for this year.? WEEKLY RUNDOWN WRESTLERS OF THE WEEK (Floyd County) Aaron Witt and Ben Moberly, Floyd Central Witt and Moberly each posted a 5-0 record at the formidable Calumet Duals last weekend in northern Indiana. One of Witt?s victories in the 130-pound division came against the No. 12 wrestler in the state. Moberly, who competed at 145, and Witt were the lone two Highlanders to go undefeated in the duals. 19. WRESTLING WEDNESDAY: Charlestown will attempt to win MSC duals again Bulldogs will size up sectional foes at duals By KEVIN HARRIS Kevin.Harris@newsandtribune.com When area high school grapplers and their fans think about Mid-Southern Conference wrestling, the Charlestown Pirates have immediately come to mind. The Pirates have won the MSC Duals the past five seasons and the conference meet the past four years. This Saturday, Charlestown will try to continue its stranglehold on one conference title, as it will host the MSC Duals at Bill Dunn Sports Arena. The meet will start at 10 a.m. First-year Pirates head coach Adam Doherty says winning a sixth duals crown in a row will depend on how his inexperienced wrestlers perform. He also expects solid performances by veterans Taylor Newcomb at 145 pounds and Mark Daugherty at 152 along with Ethan Bowen at 171. ?Our chance of winning this year will depend heavily on our young wrestlers,? Doherty said. ?We are starting four freshmen and four sophomores. We will be anchored by some strong upperclassmen. Scottsburg is always a tough team and will probably be the biggest challenge.? Along with Scottsburg and fellow MSC rivals Corydon, Salem and Pekin Eastern competing in the meet, New Albany will participate like it has the past few years. Even though the Bulldogs are not in the MSC, they use the duals as a chance to face future sectional opponents. New Albany wrestles in the Jeffersonville Sectional, which also includes Charlestown, Corydon, Salem and Eastern. ?Every time you wrestle a sectional team, you want to win because you may not see them again until sectionals,? said New Albany head coach Eric Burres, whose team posted a 4-1 record at last year?s duals. ?I think we have as good of a chance as anyone else, but there will be some duals that will be very close. There are always some good matches.? Burres is looking for productive days from three of his seniors on Saturday. They are Tim Martin at 135, Larry Rickman at 145 and Taylor Hoke at heavyweight. Both the Pirates and Bulldogs have had a few meets this season. After posting a 63-6 victory over Providence in its season opener on Nov. 24, Charlestown went 4-3 in this past weekend?s Evansville Reitz Invitational. The Pirates posted wins over Terre Haute North, Evansville Bosse, Evansville Central and Paducah (Ky.) Tilghman. ?We have a very young, hard-nosed team,? said Doherty, was a two-time state champion at Jeffersonville. ?I am seeing improvement every day they leave the room. Their work ethic is where it needs to be. Now, we just need the experience.? The Bulldogs have already had three meets this year. They began the campaign competing in the Bloomington North five-way meet on Nov. 28, followed by a home dual meet against Tell City last Tuesday and the Hoosier Hills Conference Duals last weekend. Like Doherty, Burres has seen his wrestlers already make strides this season. ?So far, we have gotten better every weekend, which is what you want to see as a coach,? Burres said. ?We have a lot of young kids wrestling varsity, so it is a learning experience for them every week. We still have a lot of kinks to work out, but our kids are working hard and getting better.? WEEKLY WRAP WRESTLER OF THE WEEK (FLOYD COUNTY) Cory Neel, Christian Academy of Indiana Neel posted a 7-0 record in his weight division at last weekend?s Scottsburg Invitational, including a win in overtime. Neel?s performance helped CAI finish fourth, its best tournament placing ever in the program?s three-year history. WRESTLERS OF THE WEEK (CLARK COUNTY) Devon Miller and Caleb Browner, Jeffersonville Miller and Browner were two of six Red Devils to post 7-0 records in last weekend?s Hoosier Hills Conference Duals. They helped Jeff win the meet and finish undefeated in the duals for the first time ever. Miller (119 pounds) and Browner (171) both currently have season records of 10-0. NEW WASHINGTON SCOTTSBURG INVITATIONAL: team finish ? third; individual results: Lane Massingham won the 135-pound title, and Josh Sampson was the 145 champion; Pat Kerhwald, 6-1 at 215; notes: The Mustangs collected the third-place finish despite fielding only eight wrestlers. Head coach Jeremy Campbell praised Sampson and Massingham?s leadership and lauded Kerhwald for persevering despite battling minor injuries. ?We tell our kids that in order to succeed as a team, we must hold ourselves accountable individually to believe, to work and to perform. It takes every single person doing what is right to achieve that team success,? Campbell said. New Washington now has a 7-6 dual-meet record, its best mark in a decade. Weekend results from New Albany and Providence were not reported at press time.

  21. WRESTLING WEDNESDAY: Mustangs have individual success at Boonville Sampson wins 145-pound title By GREG MENGELT Greg.Mengelt@newsandtribune.com New Washington opened the season by going 1-4 at the Boonville Pioneer Duals on Saturday, but the Mustangs had a lot of individual success. Fielding only five wrestlers, New Wash beat Crawford County and had three wrestlers finish above .500, including 145-pound champion Josh Sampson. ?My kids understand that what they lack in numbers must be made up for in heart when they practice, and ferocity when they wrestle,? New Washington coach Jeremy Campbell said. ?Being from a small school and wrestling the schedule we set, there is no other option if we are to meet our team goals.? Sampson went 5-0 and beat Boonville?s Anthony Sciles, 6-2. Like Campbell, Sciles was a semistate qualifier last season and the two shared the Most Valuable Wrestler Award at the Boonville Invitational last season. Sampson dominated Sciles, giving up both of the points for strategy. ?(Sampson) had a good early test,? Campbell said. ?The two points (Sciles) had, Josh gave to him. It was a good showing by him. He?s a fierce competitor. He has his goals set high.? Lane Massingham, the Mustangs? 315-pound wrestler, finished second with a 4-1 mark, and freshman Brady Meenach went 3-1 at 119 pounds. Meenach?s lone loss came to eventual champion Tyler Coomer of Boonville. The Mustangs are back in action today at Pekin Eastern. JEFFERSONVILLE Jeffersonville?s wrestling team took two separate varsity teams to two different tournaments on Saturday ? and both were successful. One team finished second at the Capital City Classic at Beech Grove High School, just southeast of Indianapolis, behind third-ranked Perry Meridian. Jeff finished ahead of No. 13 Warren Central and No. 19 Columbus North at Corydon. The other went to Kentucky to the North Oldham Invitational. There, the Red Devils beat Kentucky?s No. 13 team, St. Xavier 42-34, and its No. 19 team North Oldham, 52-25. In the ultimate match, the Red Devils lost to Kentucky No. 5 Wayne County, 40-39. At Beech Grove, the Red Devils put five in the finals ? a new school record ? and had three champions in Jimmy Pratt at 215, Devon Miller at 119 and Caleb Browner at 171. Browner became the first Devil to win the Corydon tournament twice. At North Oldham, David Fridley won his division, beating Kentucky?s eighth-ranked 135-pounder Aaron Dodd of Wayne County. Xavier Weekly (103 pounds) and Jordan Schremp (119) were both 3-0 with three pins. Michael Vazquez went 3-0 with two pins at 125 and Brandon Marlin went 3-0 with two pins and a technical fall at 171 pounds. ?The season is going well,? Jeff coach Danny Struck said. ?We are also blessed to have five returning semistate qualifiers. It shows the kids on the team that big things can and will be done.?
  22. JEFF LOADED TO DEFEND SECTIONAL by Kenzie Winstatt of the Louisville Courier Journal http://www.courier-journal.com/article/20091203/SPORTS06/912030399/1034/Jeff+loaded+to+defend+sectional Jeffersonville will try to stay atop the Southern Indiana wrestling scene this season, and once-powerful Floyd Central is trying to reload. The Red Devils return several key wrestlers from last year's sectional title team ? just the school's fourth sectional title ever ? and sectional runner-up Floyd Central must replace 12 seniors. Jeffersonville is led by junior Caleb Browner, a defending sectional and regional champion who wrestles at 171. Browner already owns a 10-2 win over Garrett Goldman of Bloomington North in the Capital City Classic at Beech Grove. In the recent Capital City Classic, Jeff finished second to No.3 Perry Meridian. Some of the Red Devils' top individuals include Alonzo Shepherd (103 pounds), Curtis Smith (112), Devon Miller (119) and Ronaldo Weekly (125). Jeff coach Danny Struck said he hopes for another big year. ?We hope so,? he said. ?We think we're better, but some of our competition is better, too.? The numbers at Jeff have made Struck optimistic. The Red Devils have more than 60 kids in the wrestling program, and they will field two varsity squads this year. ?We've built two varsity schedules,? Struck said. ?I don't know anyone else who does that.? Struck said he has two varsity teams to give more kids an opportunity to participate in the sport. ?You could be behind Caleb Browner and be a really good senior,? he said. Struck also mentioned the Red Devils' international flare. They have wrestlers from six countries: the United States, Venezuela, Spain, Mexico, South Korea and Mongolia. At Floyd Central ? where the Highlanders have won 24 sectional titles ? second-year coach Brandon Sisson must replace 12 seniors. However, the Highlanders aren't without optimism, returning three wrestlers who qualified for the semistate: Logan Kelly (103), Aaron Witt (130) and Ben Moberly (145). The Highlanders are young. Of Floyd Central's 36 wrestlers, 18 are freshmen. ?We have a lot of kids who are untested,? Sisson said. ?We'll probably have to take some lumps early on.? At New Albany ? where, like Floyd Central, there's a solid freshman group ? the Bulldogs are led by senior Tim Martin, a state qualifier a year ago at 140. He's joined by heavyweight Taylor Hoke, a semistate qualifier, and regional qualifier Larry Rickman (145). The Providence wrestling squad is led by senior Jacob Golembeski, a 160-pounder who advanced to the semistate last year. Charlestown returns sectional champions Jeff Stotridge (119), Taylor Newcomb (145) and Mark Daugherty (152), who advanced to the semistate last year.

  25. HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING PREVIEW: Even better Defending champ Jeff believes it can be better BY GREG MENGELT sports@newsandtribune.com Several wrestlers return for a Jeffersonville team that won its fourth sectional championship in school history last season. The Red Devils, who beat Southridge in the first round of the regional then fell to Castle in the regional title match, should be especially strong at the lighter divisions. Alonzo Shepherd was a sectional and regional champion and went 38-9 as a freshman at 103 pounds last season. Junior Ronaldo Weekly was a semistate qualifier as a sophomore at 125 pounds. At 112 pounds, Curtis Smith captured a sectional crown as a junior last season. Jeff?s 119-pounder, Devon Miller, was a sectional and regional runner-up as a junior. Weekly will likely wrestle at 135 pounds this season. Jeff?s most successful returning wrestler is Caleb Browner. Last year as a junior at 171 pounds, Browner went 39-6 and placed sixth at the individual semistate. ?We have the same goals that we have every year and that?s to be state champs,? Jeff coach Danny Struck said. Smith, Weekly, Browner, Miller and Coty Hendricks were all-Hoosier Hills Conference champions a year ago. ?We?re pretty excited about the number of kids we have returning,? Struck said of practices that have involved as many as 70 wrestlers. ?It gives us a lot of experience and a lot of depth.? The Red Devils should be sectional and regional contenders again in 2009-10. But they will have to find a way to replace Brett Walker, Alex Bailey, Darnell Graham, Tyler Tatgenhorst and Jon Clark, all of whom wrestled in the regional last year. Clark and Walker were regional champions. ?You never can replace kids, because every kid is an individual,? Struck said. ?The kids filling in for them are very good. They will be juniors and seniors filling in for them. Half of our lineup is different, but we shouldn?t look much different.? In the hunt FC expects to contend for the HHC and sectional titles Even with the loss of 12 seniors, Floyd Central wrestling coach Brandon Sisson said he expects the Highlanders to reach goals of winning their sixth straight Hoosier Hills Conference championship and winning the sectional, in which they finished second to Jeffersonville a season ago. ?I feel like we?re always in the hunt for both of those,? Sisson said. ?Our team goals are pretty much the same every year. We always want to win the sectional, the regional and the Hoosier Hills Conference.? Sisson has good reasons for his optimism. Of Floyd?s record nine semistate qualifiers last season, three return this season ? Ben Moberly, Aaron Witt and Logan Kelly. Moberly won the Jeffersonville Regional last year and went 37-10 at 145 pounds. Witt (125) and Kelly (103) were third at the regional and both had more than 25 wins. ?I think we have three or four kids that can qualify for state this year,? Sisson said. The Highlanders had no state qualifiers last year for the first time in 27 years. The Highlanders also return 112-pound sophomore Zach Thomas, who finished third in the sectional, sophomore 119-pounder Nolan Vanhook, who was fourth in the sectional, and senior Reed Emerson, who was fifth in the sectional. ?We have a lot of guys who got some varsity experience last year,? said Sisson, the Highlanders? second-year head coach. ?We?ll have to see how these young guys fit into the lineup, but I have pretty good expectations.? NEW ALBANY New Albany doesn?t figure to compete for the Hoosier Hills Conference and sectional crowns, but the Bulldogs do have several sectional and state finals contenders. Senior Tim Martin, who is ranked sixth in the state at 140 pounds, leads the Bulldogs. Martin qualified for the state meet as a junior, going 38-7 last season. During the summer, Martin won the USA Wrestling state championship at 135 pounds and competed at the national finals in Fargo, N.D. ?I think he?s grown from that experience,? New Albany coach Eric Burress said. ?I think placing at the state tournament is a realistic goal for him.? Two other seniors should also be competitive. Heavyweight Taylor Hoke was a semistate qualifier last season, and Larry Rickman was a regional qualifier. Burress said he expects both to take another step this year. ?That?s our goal, to have each wrestler go a notch higher than they did last year, always moving in the right direction,? Burress said. New Albany should also get some help from its younger wrestlers. Freshmen Keenan Ward and Brennan Banet were each successful in middle school. ?They?re going to learn a lot,? Burress said of all of his young wrestlers. ?It?s going to be fun to see how much they grow from the beginning of the year to the end of the year.? CHARLESTOWN The four-time defending Mid-Southern Conference champions have a new leader in Adam Doherty. Doherty, the 1998 and 1999 state champion at Jeffersonville, takes over for longtime head coach Tom Kendrick, who led one of the strongest programs in Southern Indiana the past several years. Doherty has plenty to work with, including Jeff Stotridge, who finished 40-3 last season ? with a loss to the state champion and two losses to the state?s third-place finisher ? and finished ninth in the state in the 119-pound division last season. He will likely wrestle at 125 pounds as a senior. Taylor Newcomb, who will wrestle at 145 points, was a sectional champion last season and a semistate qualifier, as was Mark Daugherty, who will wrestle at 152. ?I hate to put a target on them, but I can see all three of them wrestling at Conseco (Fieldhouse in the individual state meet),? said Doherty, who was an assistant under Kendrick for the past four years. ?I have high expectations for those guys.? Although the rest of the Pirate squad is young, Doherty said he expects his team to be competitive with Scottsburg and Corydon Central for the MSC title again. ?I hope for another conference win,? Doherty said. ?Scottsburg is much older than us, so we?ll have to beat a more mature team. But we?ve set that as one of our major goals this year.? NEW WASHINGTON With only eight wrestlers in the entire program, New Washington is focused on individual success. That success begins with Josh Sampson. Sampson went 44-3 and was the regional champion last season and returns for his senior year with high expectations in the 152-pound weight class. Sampson is joined by two other wrestlers that third-year coach Jeremy Campbell said were ?looking pretty good.? Campbell said he ?expects good things? from 135-pounder Lane Massingham, who finished fifth at the Jeffersonville Sectional last season. ?He definitely has some wrestling ability,? Campbell said of the junior. The Mustangs also have a newcomer who is showing promise in freshman Brady Mennach, a 119-pound wrestler. ?We?re working on individual placement,? Campbell said. ?That?s our goal as far as being competitive. That?s the team mindset.? PROVIDENCE Semistate qualifier Jacob Golembeski returns as a senior for what is otherwise a very young team. Golembeski went 26-8 at 160 pounds as a junior and assistant coach Patrick Fleming said he expects more out of the multisport star in 2009-10. ?I think he has a lot of potential,? said Fleming, who will take over for Phil Cook as the head coach at Providence at the end of this season. ?I think he?ll have a really productive year.? Otherwise, the Pioneers are unproven, but Fleming likes his young wrestlers, especially the talented sophomore class. ?They?re fairly inexperienced, but I think with their raw talent they could prove to be really good wrestlers in the next couple of years,? he said. CHRISTIAN ACADEMY OF INDIANA In just its second season, Christian Academy went 7-6 as a team and placed five wrestlers in the top six at the Jeffersonville Sectional in 2008-09. This year, CAI coach Mike Brown believes the Warriors can have their first four regional wrestlers. Brown said he believes that Corey Neel, Caleb Delbridge, Levi Speth and Ethan Banet ? all juniors who have wrestled in all three of the program?s seasons ? can at least finish in the top four and get out of the sectional. ?I think all four have an equal chance,? Brown said. ?We?ve progressively gotten a little better. We?re hoping that this year is the first we take one or two kids (to the regional).? Brown, who was an assistant coach at Jeffersonville, and CAI assistant David Neel, who came from Floyd Central, have every intention of turning the Christian Academy program into a championship program. ?As a team, we?re improving both individual-wise and team-wise,? Brown said. ?When we came (to CAI), both Coach Neel and I were coming from serious programs and we had no other plan for this program than to be a serious program.? With 14 wrestlers, the Warriors will still not fill out a complete team in 2009-10. But they have been able to add two or three wrestlers in each of their first three years. ?We?re still not an experience level that we?re going to compete with Jeff and Floyd and New Albany, but we?ve been successful against schools our size,? Brown said. ?We?re building up toward (being successful in) the tournament series.?
