  1. It would be lovely to keep debating, but for now, I have to go help with MS wrestling practice. Maybe next year I will decide to truly work hard and go for it, but for now, the Cavs are stuck with my half-hearted efforts...
  2. It is also important to be part of a community and contribute to the greater good. Again, it isn't a matter of other sports not being very good. If even a half dozen kids don't go out for a given sport, that sport could very easily cease to exist.
  3. Around here, if you wrestle all year round, other sports suffer considerably.
  4. It's not a real class wrestling debate until @UncleJimmy takes a least jab at the class side.
  5. Another thing that people sometimes gloss over is this definition of "small school." There is small like Knox small...600 or so. Then there is small like Caston small...under 300. When you start getting into the schools that size, things change even more dramatically. If a wrestler (or even worse, group of wrestlers) decides to commit his/her spring to wrestling and does not play base/softball, then it very well may not be a matter of taking a good athlete away from a team. It may not mean that the team is now not very good...it may mean that the team now doesn't exist. Same for a lot of coaches. If a coach decides to go "all-in" on spring wrestling (or fall wrestling), it may not only impact the wrestling team. It may leave the cross country team without a coach. Does this happen in large schools? Of course. However...where is it more likely to happen? Again, we are playing a different game at the small schools. Not worse. Not better. Different.
  6. Wrestling provides zero opportunity. Wrestling provides a venue for showcasing the opportunities you have been fortunate enough to utilize.
  7. Respectfully disagree. Smalls schools and large schools are not playing the same game. The gap between the games they're playing grows wider every year.
  8. Yes, just going for a "big event" weekend for comparison. My guess is NBA All-Star weekend will be able to match the crowd for St. Patrick's Day/Home game against the Sixers weekend.
  9. Just did a search for Saturday, March 18. Pacers play 76ers at home on a Saturday night. Priceline says average hotel room in downtown Indy is $428, standard deviation of $95. That means expect to pay between $333 and $523 for a room. And that is a regular season home game, not an all-star weekend room.
  10. It's going to be sad when they finally announce the location...this has been one of my favorite threads in recent memory.
  11. This would be an outstanding statistical study. Might even make a good documentary... We have a child with a birthday two days before cutoff and were terrified at the decision of when to send him. Sending him at 5 felt like sending him early, sending him at 6 felt like holding him back. Ultimately, we went with the advice of his preschool teacher and sent him at 5. Hard part is, we will never know if that was the right answer because we will never have a side-by-side comparison. Our concerns at the time were academic, and really behavioral, but the same logic still holds. It would have been the same way had we sent him at 6... Ultimately, it's probably more about what you do with their time in school and how accountable you hold them than anything else.
  12. Hammond Civic Center is my pick. Makes me feel like it's a WWF house show from 1987. I can just hear Howard Finkel doing the voice over during a Can-Am Connection squash match on Superstars of Wrestling
  13. Maybe they could just host it at Merrillville?
  14. This no GA thing really cramps my style. I usually ride in solo-style and find my posse when I get there. Guess it's a year to make new friends...maybe even convert some single class people...Next year I will definitely get the section # of @UncleJimmy before making my ticket purchase.
  15. Well, went in one last time and who knew...one seat in section 8, row 15 and it worked like a charm. This may be one of the weirdest online shopping experiences of my life.
  16. I thought maybe waiting until now, then trying to buy a single ticket would help...you know, since the rush had died down. I was wrong. Still either saying "can't leave a single seat in a row" or loading indefinitely when I click on the seat.
  17. Only allowing purchases of at least two tickets at a time. No individual tickets available. So hopefully you all like to travel in groups more than I do, haha
  18. Rochester - Teacher Culver Academy - Teacher Bremen - Lay coach Triton - Teacher North Judson - Teacher Caston - Mark Evans, Lay coach Tippecanoe Valley - Teacher Winamac - Teacher
  19. Lucas Oil?! Man, if they were hosting there, we could probably put 20+ mats down. Now, how could we change the format of individual state to necessitate putting down 20+ mats...hmm... Kidding...at least in the sense of me trying to hijack the thread. Not kidding about classing the individual tournament. Never kidding about that...
  20. Thank you for sharing, that sounds amazing. We have talked about doing that, but have always hesitated due to worries about being "up" on the stage. Did that seem to be an issue at all? Always felt like it would give a HS meet a true "big fight" kind of feel. Always makes my heart happy to hear that schools get behind wrestling in a big way, especially when it's not attached to someone completing some grand achievement. Same goes for Cross Country, Track, Swimming, Golf, Soccer, etc.
  21. Is there chance for ladies wrestling to become a sanctioned sport next season? Or is it at least two years in emerging status? As exciting as it is to think about a sanctioned ladies wrestling season, it seems like it would be very difficult to pull that off right now.
