Last year Blake wrestled up to 220 every opportunity that he could until the state series. He will do it again this year so maybe there will be an opportunity for him to see one of those guys. As far as the state finals go, he is not going to go an unnatural weight just for the enjoyment of the spectators. He already travels all over the country to compete against the best wrestlers.

This is a straightforward issue of fairness.  There was a rule.  People (including those like me who disagreed with it) sacrificed and followed the rule.  I am just stunned by the lack of communication from ISWA.

If waivers are granted that creates inherent inequity.  And that is not fair.  This is why most governments have laws banning similar practices.  If a bureaucrat gives a special favor like a waiver to a close friend or business customer who spends money with him, that is not fair to the rest of the community.

The only fair thing is to maintain the rule.  Have two events, your in.  Have less than two events, your out.

I am still assuming based upon the lack of response by the ISWA and since there is NO CHANGE to the State Flyer published on iswa.com, that “All participants must compete in a minimum of 2 Local level Freestyle tournaments in order to compete at the State event.“  At this point, we are still undecided if we will register for State or not, but based upon the number registrations for Central Regionals, we probably have no choice but to attend.

I believe that wrestling these styles makes a more rounded wrestler and exposes flaws in their Folkstyle technique.  I also believe the 2 required qualifications did help boost local attendance this year as the 2 tournaments we attended had some of the best completion we’ve seen over the last several years at these events.  However, I certainly would support a “well-documented and well-communicated” waiver process for those with injuries or those who compete on a National Level.

If there really was change in direction by the ISWA to allow waivers this year, I’m sure it was a decision based upon the number of participants registered and the possibility of losing money on hosting the State event.  If they lose money, then we might not ever have this event in the future.  However, if next year they come out with the same ruling and say “This year we’re serious!”, I’m going to be very skeptical that things won’t cave in with low registration projections.

It’s frustrating that I wasn’t replied to when I originally inquired and that no communication has been publicized either on this board (other than Joe's letter), the ISWA website, on Facebook or Twitter.  Regardless of their stance, I think an official statement would help clear the muddy waters.  Who knows how many of these waivers were actually applied for and accepted.

Wow... straight up bull crap by the ISWA.

I sent an email to Mr. Rosbottom and Coach Hull about a waiver for my son on March 8th because of the National Schedule we were attending.  I received ZERO response back... In addition, Ty was injured while wrestling in Virginia and rushed back this past weekend to get our 2nd qualifier in so he could attend Freestyle/Greco state.  If I would have known there was any type of waiver process, I certainly would have applied to the ISWA to give him an extra week to heal up.

I love how the letter was dated April 29... that's TODAY! Nice communication skills... we abided by the rules as they were stated and would have expected everyone else in the state to abide by them as well.  Now, with 1 day left to register, the ISWA changes their tune.  Ridiculous!

I have never complained about the 2 tournament rule.  We went to 2 of them, 1 local and one 3 hours away that cost me around $400 for the weekend.  Now I'm told I could've saved my money and just petitioned to get in?  Either you have a rule or you don't.  This wishy-washy BS is ridiculous!

Yikes! So ISWA wants to strengthen the styles, promote growth, make IN better..yet it has clearly disappointed a kid and his team that last I checked, would be the poster child for the exact demographic they should be looking to hook! No one in the organization could reply to a state runnerup and by not doing so, place that wrestler in a vary precarious health position...all while this wrestler does EVERYTHING in his power to accomplish each MANDATE the ISWA throws at him which includes the desire to strengthen his states stature in the styles? Oh, and this kid and team are connected to one of the better/upcoming programs in the state that, I assume, is actually GROWING in numbers and profile? Nice. Maybe there is a reason they are an RWO and not RTC (I kid, I know there is). Maybe others might follow now since teaching the styles doesn't need to be a priority and all qualify for state again anyway? Let's be truthful, no waiver will be denied this year! I'm sorry you and your wrestler had to go thru this.

What if attending X number of FS/Greco RTC's and participating in 1 tournament could qualify a wrestler for state?

Good points Shaun, but you have to take into consideration that Avon does not allow 6th graders to wrestle for the middle schools. You would have to add those kids in too. We have multiple 6 graders that have won state. Avon has double digit iswa state champs for grades 6th to 8th. Like I said before, it would be a good dual.

I agree with Lewis. It would be a good dual. Both teams have studs. Look forward to seeing big Sam Jones at Middle School Nationals. He is my guy!

My family was talking about some of the teams that Ty has been on and all the familiar names that we saw at State this past weekend.  I went back to look at Ty’s first National Elementary team and was amazed at the talent that Indiana sent to Kingsport between Team Red Cobra, Indiana Brawlers and the Indiana Elite.  Although some of these kids are no longer wrestling in Indiana, the majority of them are all still wrestling and doing so at a very high level.

Years ago, I remember looking at some of these types of pics when the teams included Escobedo, Tsirtsis, etc.  For all the families that have youth wrestlers attending these events in the coming months, sit back and enjoy the ride...

I think Avon will takes some hits next year, alot of seniors leaving. Even with some good freshman coming in and going from MS to HS is a huge jump..... Freshman could wrestle JR or SR, boys vs men.
