    Garcia & Mills

There's no rivalry here... partners from a young age and always pushed each other hard in practice.  These two were battle tested and mentally prepared for the state series run.  Knowing that these two would see each other at our Dual, County, Conference, Sectionals, Regionals, Semi-State and State only sold more popcorn at the events.  They had their battles on the mat and Asa got the best when it counted, but we're his biggest fans when he's not on the other side of the line.  Fun times and wouldn't have it any other way! #cwaog

  2. My vote goes to Carson Willis, but it's hard to pick which year was the worst. This kid should have been a multiple time state placer, but had a murderer's row of Ticket Rounds.  His case alone should be all you need to add wrestle backs.

    2018 - Ty Mills (2,3,2,3)
    2017 - Graham Rooks (3,4,4,1)
    2016 - Brock Hudkins (5,SQ,1,1)
    2015 - Jacob Skaggs (SQ,8)

I’m going holler at @Fabio Jr. then . He can get a plug in Watchamacallit thingy set up for some good Banana Action going on here . He’s a World Champion Computer Software Engineer.

I had you up there Joe at that #1 spot until this hiccup on here. Let the Cartel down .

I got rankings to for Computer Software Engineering .

    1. Nick W.
    1. Darren Mills @teammills

    3. Joe Caprino

    😂

There is that Avon education getting put to good use, can't count to 3!  Wait, he's at the burg and we're teammates with TeamGarcia & MattyB too, WHAT?!?!?

    I'm surprised this is not the predictions of @TeamGarcia @Mattyb & @JMILL:

    1A - Hendricks County

    2A - Hendricks County

    3A - Hendricks County

    4A - Hendricks County

I'm gonna root for the Dogs to take home 4a and would love to see Columbus East come home with the 3a title!  Every team in the 1a and 2a are winners to me as well, great exposure!  Best of luck to all the teams participating and hope everyone stays healthy.

  4. This is a great trip to help get your young wrestler to the next level.  Ty took this trip his 8th grade year and had a blast.  I was amazed at his maturity level and his wrestling abilities when he got back.  He went on to place at Pre-Season nationals and several other national tournaments in the months following.  There was a great mixture of Folkstyle, Freestyle and Greco and he wrestled some of the top tier kids in the country.  Most of all, he really made some life-long friends that he still talks to today.  It's such an awesome feeling to be at some of his college tournaments and run into one of his OASWT teammates.  Ty was able to fund raise about 90% of his trip costs from the community and worked off the rest with chores around the house.

He was able to see and do so many things across the country that it was a once in a lifetime experience.  If you are interested, let me know and I can share more about our experiences.  The only downside was a picture of his cauliflower ear in the middle of Utah somewhere.. mom wasn't happy, but Ty loved it!

Wonder if he would tell Sarah Hildebrandt or Kayla that they’re mockeries.

I thought the same thing! These girls are tough as nails and exciting to watch, even back in their ISWA days.

I've always wondered what a weeknight might be like in the Hildebrandt family... if Drew or Sarah popped off a wise crack against each other! Move the furniture out of the way, it's on!!!

Also of note and I don't think it's been mentioned back here but the ACCNet is now broadcasting wrestling on Friday's (I think) as well so those of you with appropriate cable providers can check that out as well..possible Ty Mills action (just wanted to "Ty" it in to the thread topic of IN kids!!).

Thanks... Ty's dinged up at the moment, but should be back in the lineup within the next week.  He's been taking some good beatings, but looking better every match and learning!!!  The scores may look pretty bad, but he's learning how to score and screw the boring 1-0 matches... score, score, score!!!  The dual tomorrow with Pitt should be on the ACCNX, but I don't think Duke has any primetime duals scheduled this year.  The ACCN is still dominated by football and basketball, but hopefully with the ACC knocking on the door with 5 top 25 teams in wrestling, it will fix itself.  Next year, Duke should be back in the mix with our Olympic redshirts back and more depth in the lineup.

On another note, I'm just amazed at how talented all of our Indiana boys are after seeing the competition Ty's faced.  Brayton, Mason, Nick, CJ, Brock, Cael, both Drew's, the Rooks, etc... are freaking STUDS, there are NO easy matches in D1.  Plus, we have lots more on the cusp of making the lineup... very exiting!  Proud to be a Hoosier on the mat!

Is Ty starting this year, or are they still figuring out the lineup?

I think they are still getting things figured out with redshirts and the weights.  He won his initial wrestle-off at 141, but another kid who has been 149 may be dropping to 141 and Ty lost that match at a 146 catch-weight.  He's a tiny 141 and would probably drop to 133 if the coaches thought that was in the team's best interest, but I know they are trying to bulk him up.  He wants to be in the starting lineup and we'll just have to compare the results over the next several tournaments and see what shakes out before our dual season starts.  Either way, just glad he's back on the mat and ready to take his lumps (and give some!) while he adjusts to the college style.

  8. The state got shutout at the Battle of the Citadel...

@141 Ty Mills, Duke draws 2x NCAA Qualifier and NCAA All-American, #15 Sa'Darien Perry as his first collegiate match and loses 0-6.  Then gets majored his next match for the official dip.  Almost 18 months since he last competed, so happy to see him back on the mat.

@149 Bryton Goering, Presbyterian loses his first match and is winning his consolation match, but gets caught.

Oh well... tough day, but getting better and Duke will be at the Mountaineer Invite next week.

Saw he wasn't on Duke's roster, is he done wrestling or is he somewhere else?

I don't want to speak on behalf of his family, but I believe he had to medically retire due to his injury last year.  He's still at Duke and was cheering on the team during wrestle-offs last weekend.  He is a great kid and partner and it sucks that he won't be with the team this year.

Not going to lie that year I was worried, Ty coming off his Runner Up 106, I text you later that year in 2015 right before season. We’re going 106, I was thinking to myself maybe he’d say 113.... text ..... you said so are we. You said there can only be 1 State Champ coming out of Hendricks County at 106. I said damn it ! Laughed, then so be it . Lol.

Now you know I how felt when Miranda weighed in at 106 Ty's freshman year at our Dual... I was like, well... let's get it on!  No where to run, no where to hide! It set the tone for the next 3 years, wrestle the best and see where you shake out!

I'd bet we get 3 NCAA Champs from Hendricks County:

125 - Hudkins, 133 - Garcia, 141 - Mills (just don't tell the Red and Lee kids about our plans!)

More State Titles than the other State Series stuff.

    3x State Champion

    2x Evansville Semi State

    2x Mooresville Regional

    2x Avon Sectional

Just resume builders during faceoffs in HS .

Asa got it done when it mattered the most... the battles between Ty and Asa were both awesome and gut wrenching as a parent.  Those two were battle tested when it came time for the State Series and it shows with their results.  Neither had any fear when we saw each other in the Dual, County, Conference, Sectional, Regional, Semi-State and State!  @TeamGarcia and I would just smile at each other win or lose because there is no better way to get better than to see that type of competition week in and week out.  Do I wish a couple of those red rings were blue, absolutely... but I am extremely proud of those two boys since seeing them battle it out when they were 7 or 8 in the CWA room, partners in MS and rivals in HS!

Congrats to Asa and his family on an awesome HS Career!!!  Now, we're gonna prepare to flip the script when it comes time for the NCAA's!!! 😃

Duke is there with a full compliment of wrestlers but no Jeremiah Reitz or Ty Mills.  Can anyone give an update on either of these two?  I'm not finding any results on either.  Since this tournament allows multiple wrestlers from the same school (unattached or attached), I was hoping we'd see them.

Ty is red-shirting this year at 133/141, but 2 days before their first Open of the year at Virginia Tech he got banged up.  He's still recovering and may end up with a medical red-shirt this year.  He's been able to get a little practice over the past few weeks, but still showing symptoms of his injury and not fully cleared yet.

Jeremiah was ready to battle it out this year at 133, down from 141 last year.  However, he sustained a pretty severe concussion around the same time Ty went down.  He's been recovering from it since and I'm not sure if he'll be cleared after break or not.

At this point, Duke is FFing 133, so I wouldn't be surprised if the first healthy one gets inserted into the line for the Dual schedule.  Regardless, Ty is loving the environment and I think found the perfect fit of academics and athletics.  I'm excited to see what Coach Lanham continues to build in the ACC!

Ty Mills is quite popular these days, he got the USA Wrestling Wrestler of the Week honors to go with The Open Mat's honor earlier this week.

    https://www.teamusa.org/USA-Wrestling/Athlete-of-Week/2018/April/20/Ty-Mills-named-USA-Wrestling-Athlete-of-the-Week

Wow... we're very humbled by the recognition Ty's received this week.  Without all the folks involved with the Dream Team Classic, all of this would have never been possible.  While the recognition is nice, I don't want it to overshadow all the other great matches of the night.  Every Indiana kid out there battled their hardest and it's awesome that a week later, this event is still being talked about.  I think Brayton won the popular vote for this award and so we don't want to undercut him, but it's awesome that the Brownsburg program had 2 wrestlers in contention for this award.  Thank you to all the coaches who's helped him become the wrestler he is today.

  14. I just want to thank Joe and all the other people that put the time and effort to bring this event to Indiana and give our state the publicity it deserves on a National level.  All of our wrestlers were very impressive and put up a great fight against the top kids in the country (win or lose).  I appreciate Team USA coming to Indiana with a "nothing to gain, but everything to lose" situation.  Ty was able to capitalize and take out his opponent and has gotten a flood of national publicity.  Without all the work that was put into this, he would have not had this opportunity.  We found out yesterday that he was named the National High School Wrestler of the Week by TheOpenMat.

    What are the other reasons?

Several coaches that we talked to during recruiting didn't put a lot of value into the placements of our tournament.  Obviously, the champ is the champ and deserves the attention as it's one of the toughest State tournaments in the country, but the fact is our placements really aren't true placements without wrestlebacks.  I'm not trying to open Pandora's box, but more than one coach mentioned how dumb a first round match of Colton Cummings vs Alec White was last year (the year before it was Triana vs Cummings in SS Blood Round).  One has to win and one has to lose, but the fact that the loser can't come back to place seems absurd,  Of the 2 coaches we talked with who actually came to our State tournament, each watched Friday night and then left on Saturday morning for the Illinois State Tournament.  Their reasoning was they preferred to see more kids wrestle in a State with class wrestling, than the limited bang for the buck in our State.  Everyone said our State tournament environment was awesome, but no one liked our State's format.  I'm not trying to turn this into a 25 page topic, but that's what we heard straight from multiple D1 coaches.

    Let the debates begin...

Evansville SS at 126 is a nightmare...

    Mooresville Reg....Garcia #1, Mills #7, Denny #12

    Jeffersonville Reg...Rooks #2

    Castle Reg....Egli #4,Willis #9

Luckily, we have wrestlebacks a Semi-State, so the best will get through regardless.... whoops, I was dreaming! Oh well, embrace the grind, some very good wrestlers are not going to get to punch their ticket to State.  This is among some of the reasons college coaches have told me they don't waste their time with Indiana's state tournament.

What happened to Mills and Walton?

They both went down with the Flu last night.  It's been going through the team and finally caught up to them yesterday evening. Ty felt great yesterday up until about 10pm and starting feeling bad and then looked like death this morning when he was getting up.  Rather than try to struggle through the day and risk spreading to other kids, I pulled the plug on his day.  It's been a rough few weeks, so hopefully the rest of the season will go smoother after this.  Good luck to the rest of the wrestlers out there competing today!

The toughest on I know of is Evansville 138. It’s crazy! In no order....

    Mulkey- brownsburg- senior

    Miranda- Avon- senior

    Campbell- Ben Davis- senior

    Combest- Columbus East- Senior

    Matt Lee- EMD

and the first three are in the same sectional!!!

Dont see a tougher semi-state weight class out there. Prove me wrong.

Evansville 126 will be fun too... you'll have Rooks, Garcia, Mills, Denny, Cash, etc.  Should be a great year with those boys being battle tested come state time!

  19. Coach McCormick will certainly be missed in the wrestling community.  From holding the PrimeTime Wrestling Camps to hosting the MS State Duals, he always seemed to be trying to improve the quality and opportunities for the wrestling kids in Indiana.  We have typically been in the opposing corners and he has always been competitive, yet respectful.  Ty was able to be part of his team this Fall in PA and we got a chance to be in his corner for once.  He is a total class act and you can really tell he does it for the kids and not for his own ego.  Best of luck to the Yorktown team this year and whatever comes next in life.

  20. Thank you for all the kind words and support for Ty.  We were very blessed by the opportunities that were presented to him, but we couldn’t be happier with his choice of Duke.  We both knew after our first visit, that’s that place he wants to be.  The coaching staff has many Indiana ties and after listening to what Coach Lanham is building, it was like the stars aligned .  We watched Coach Wissel wrestle with Purdue versus Penn State at the very first Indy Nationals at Conseco Fieldhouse when Ty was a Bantam and watched Coach Nelson wrestle many times in both HS and College.  Ty’s hard work on the mat and in the classroom, has opened so many doors for him, we could not be prouder of what he has accomplished so far.  Hopefully, the combination of Ty and Jerimiah Reitz will anchor Duke’s lightweight lineup for the next 4-5 years.
