  1. I certainly don't mean to open up a can of worms on this topic, or hi-jack the original intent of this thread, but I feel compelled to offer my opinion on this topic. I have

long been a proponent of class wrestling. It works beautifully in many other states across our nation and offers magnificent opportunities for kids and teams from

all size schools and communities (that they likely may not have the opportunity to experience in a single class system). The notion and need for some form of class wrestling

in Indiana becomes glaringly evident if you were in attendance at the Classed Team State Duals event. Teams/Schools of all sizes afforded the opportunity to compete within

divisions with schools their own size with similar enrollments, similar size coaching staffs, and similar school resources to name a few "pro-class" characteristics.

I don't know that we can put our finger on hard statistics, but I have enjoyed a number of conversations that I have had with coaches and fans from primarily the middle and

small classes regarding the Classed Team State Duals. One coach I spoke with said, "our team numbers are up because our kids want to come back each year and shoot to win the

Team State Duals. They are actually out recruiting friends to come and join the program on our quest to compete and win at the Team State Duals." Another coach noted that the Classed Team State Duals was THE pinnacle event of the season for their team. It's neat to see the teams (from all of the classes) who bought event-specific gear just for

the Classed Team State Duals tournament.

As noted in another thread, the fan base for this event is growing. I couldn't help but notice Prairie Heights' fan section when they sealed their championship

yesterday. The roar from their large fan base made everyone's head turn. I realize many people have their varying opinion on the need for classed wrestling in Indiana,

but I think the Classed Team State Duals event is a pretty good indication of what is right and best for ALL wrestling programs in the state.

Thank you to all of the schools who participated in yesterday's event and thank you to the fans who made the trip to Ft. Wayne to support your teams.

  2. All very good concerns and suggestions. This event offers some unique hurdles that large "individual" type tournaments don't. Some of the items below are

certainly pointing out the obvious while other constraints have to be negotiated by the event organizers. As one person pointed out, the event is dealing with "growing

pains" which, from the event organizers' perspective, is a good thing (as opposed to hosting an event that no one cares about), but we do know this causes inconveniences

for teams and fans along the way. Do know that we make every attempt each year to address issues/concerns; plan for growth; and meet the teams' needs.

    * This event is unique because a balance has to be struck between fan seating and floor space for mats. Most arenas are good for fan seating but can't hold the

required number of mats. As already noted in an earlier post, we know we could put down 12 mats in some form and fashion in a large high school (but seating is limited)

We have tossed around in previous years going to a "multiple gym/site" format (which spreads the teams and fans out). Most feedback we get though is that fans, in

general, want to be able to watch all 3 classes in one venue versus having to walk to another gym or drive a mile to another building. The Indy Convention

Center was way out of our price range when we checked into it last year. We will certainly check again, but it is doubtful we could afford it.

    * I think most people recognize that we try to schedule around current holiday tournaments to the best of our ability, but it is challenging to say the least. We are

tip toeing around 1)current holiday tournaments 2)Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year's and 3) facility availability. The Ft. Wayne Coliseum hosts many,

many events of all kinds year round. It is next to impossible to simply say "we want THIS date" because it is likely that the facility has already been booked.

We were lucky this year that it was available on the date we were looking at. Next year will be quite tricky. Christmas Eve is on Saturday, Dec. 24 and

New Year's Eve will be on the next Saturday (Dec. 31).

    * I, like others, am disappointed in how Ball State and the Coliseum handles their restroom and concessions. On multiple occasions, I specifically pointed out these

areas to both institutions. They grin, nod and say "we will have all of that covered." Then when our event and crowd hits, they seem to be overwhelmed and

ill-prepared. The IHSWCA makes no revenue off of their concessions, but we feel that these facilities should be prepared to service our crowd (but they

    don't seem to be).

    * We modeled this year's mat arrangement off of the Mat Mayhem from last year. If we would go back to Ft. Wayne next year, we would certainly attempt to make adjustments.

We, and the Coliseum, think we could pull it off. To my understanding, they didn't "pull out the bleachers more" this year because the Coliseum has many codes and public

safety features/distances that they must adhere to. But again, we think positive changes would be possible in that area.

We will certainly evaluate this year's event, take feedback and begin the planning process for next year's event. We think people do want to see this event happen. The

IHSWCA will do its best to research appropriate facilities, make adjustments and plan for a 5th annual event next season.

  3. Prairie Heights is an outstanding team.  They are well-coached and their kids wrestle hard.  Although we don't like being on the losing end of a dual meet score, it was a great dual that we were proud to be a part of.  Congratulations Prairie Heights wrestlers, coaches and fans and best of luck to you the rest of this season.

    Coach McCormick

  4. There certainly is much more to these IHSAA cases than what meets the eye.  The rules being followed are the IHSAA's rules (not Yorktown's rules).  The IHSAA held hearings where the affected parties could explain their situation and present their cases in a personal, face to face setting.  The IHSAA appointed "hearing committee" made their ruling on these cases.  Yorktown did not make the final ruling on these cases.

It certainly is easy to pass judgement from afar.  I can already see, and read, numerous errors, omissions, and false information that is being passed along for public judgment.   As most people are aware, there are always two sides to every story.

  6. I want to congratulate each of these young men on their choice and decision to compete at the next level.  It's challenging enough in this day and age to simply be a college student...  add to that the rigors of being an NCAA athlete.  I have enjoyed watching all of these young men, including my son, develop over the past decade or so.  I remember watching each of them when they were just little guys on the mat, and now they are headed to college as solid men (who will represent IN well).

For me, a father/coach, it is certainly bittersweet.  I am proud of my son, but Indiana wrestling is going to feel a little different for me next season.  I am looking forward to some road trips though to watch Cael and support his new team.

    Best Wishes,

    Coach McCormick

    Go Army!

Participation on this club-based team falls within all IHSAA guidelines as this was verified with the IHSAA when planning the trip.

    Garrett - 1 mat

    IN Tech - 1 mat

    Leo - 1 mat

    Bellmont - 2 mats

    Thank you,

    Trent

  11. Semi-Finals:

    - Yorktown 52 Sheboygan Falls 13

    Finals:

    - Yorktown 37 Luxemburg-Casco 18

The Finals match was an electric atmosphere as the Tigers and Spartans wrestled under the lights in a "bowl" type setting next to Lake Michigan at Milwaukee's Summerfest. The stands were full with local wrestling fans and Summerfest "passer-by's".

There were 9 matches in the finals that were decided by 4 points or less with 5 of those being one point matches or OT.

Luxemburg-Casco HS was very well coached. A mid-sized school east of Green Bay, WI with a storied wrestling history.

    L-C's recent team state titles:

    1992-D2, 1994-D2, 1996-D2, 1999-D2, 2001-D2, 2002-D2, 2003-D2, 2005-D2, 2006-D2, 2012-D2, 2013-D2

All-in-all it was a fun and productive trip to Wisconsin. The Tigers finish their summer duals campaign 18-0 in three different events (Yorktown, Mt. Vernon and Milwaukee)

    Now it's time for a little R & R in July!

  18. I cannot believe we are headed toward our 4th annual Classed Team State Duals event.  It seems like it was just yesterday that a group of people were kicking around the concept for this event.  For what it is worth, I am pleased with the growth that this event has gone through.  Most worthy ventures have experienced growing pains of some sort, and this event is no different.  Although there is an official IHSWCA board of directors roster, there are roughly 5 people who have done the lion's share of the "behind the scenes" planning and work for this event.  I do not say this to lay blame or capture a pat on the back;  it's just the reality of the situation.

Areas of Growth that have Occurred

    *  24 to 36 teams (over a 3 year period)

    *  Westfield HS to Ball State to FW Coliseum

              - It should be noted that Coach O'Neill and Westfield were integral in pulling this off in the first 2 yrs

    *  1100 fans -- 1200 fans -- 1800 fans (yes, we added teams in year 3 but the event has shown growth in spectatorship)

With respect to the "Areas of Growth" and my comments above, the IHSWCA will have important decisions to make surrounding this event for the 2016-17 (5th annual) event.  We have been very fortunate to have the support of the ISWA and our top wrestling officials in pulling together on the actual day of the event each season.  We do appreciate the work done by many people during the weeks leading into the actual event, but I am not kidding though when I say that a small hand full of people work the other 11 months of the year in planning the event.  There is no doubt in my mind, as the planning committee chairman, that this event can grow by leaps and bounds over the next few years; BUT the IHSWCA will have to be careful that this event doesn't become too big of a creature to manage.

The IHSWCA does not host this event to make money.  It has been nice that we have had some monies left over each year after the bills are paid, but again, we have never made a decision for this event with the intent to profit from it.  With that being said, to take this event to a bigger venue and the "next level", there will no doubt need to be sponsorships secured.  We just haven't had to do that so far, so an emphasis (and a person) hasn't really been placed on garnering sponsorships (but that may need to change after next season).

Areas of consideration for future growth and/or solidifying the event

    * Might be nice in the future for the participating teams to not have to pay an entry fee (currently, all of this money pays for the referees)

              - no participating team in the first 3 years has complained about this fee.  All of these coaches have been very supportive.

    * There has been ample discussion on utilizing a larger facility.

              - We realize that Ft. Wayne will create a farther drive for the Evansville area schools.  With that said, the FW Coliseum simply fell into

place for us for next season.

              - I agree with the post made that most all championship events we hold are in central Indiana.  It will be a positive to hold 1 of these

events in a different part of the state.  Although a little inconvenient for a few teams, it should be an overall positive.

    * Adding more teams?

              - This gets into the overall scope and objective of the event.  (i.e. - just trying to crown the best team OR offer top notch competition to

                   more than 36 teams?)

              - The size of the venue; # of mats; length of the event (# of days); selection process... would all be impacted by adding additional teams.

I appreciate the dialogue and ideas being tossed around for this event.  I just wanted to share some pertinent points and possible limiting factors that have to be considered as the IHSWCA moves forward with this event.
