  1. Jennifer and I appreciate the support and well-wishes that people have offered with regard to Cael's freshman season/year at Army.  In his first three collegiate events, he has placed 6th (Virginia Tech -Southeast Open- Roanoke, VA), 4th (Binghamton Open- Vestal, NY), and 1st (New York State Intercollegiate Championships hosted at Cornell).

    More importantly, his academics seem to be squared away thus far.  It is certainly a little different not having him around home, but we are proud of his efforts in New York.  We are definitely looking forward to having him home this week for Thanksgiving!  This will be the first time he has been able to come home since we dropped him off at West Point on June 27 for basic training and school.

    Best Wishes,

    Coach McCormick

  3. This is an excellent movement for our sport.  Who cares whether someone is wrestling in a singlet or a "2 piece" snug outfit?  After all, in many recent elite events (i.e. - who's #1, MI GFC, and others) the participants/contestants are provided snug fitting compression-type uniforms to compete in.  I haven't seen any instances where the uniform caused someone to "miss a scoring opportunity" or "cause interference to the matches."  A small argument could also be made that a "more coverage" type uniform would help with skin hygiene issues.

    Every sport evolves with respect to uniform requirements and needs.  It is time to hang up the singlet and move toward 2-piece uniforms in wrestling for a variety of reasons and positive outcomes.

    There will certainly be some sport buffs who read this thread.  Can anyone out there share examples of "uniform evolution" in other sports that have occurred for safety and/or social acceptability reasons?

  4. The Hoosier Hustle All-Star team went 4-1 yesterday at the Columbus Day Duals in York, PA.

         * HH picked up a nice win in round 1 of pool play against perennial powerhouse Team Nauman White - PA

         * HH then disposed of Team Northeast (NY/NJ) and The Edge (NJ) in rounds 2 and 3

         * HH won an exciting dual over a very well coached KT Kidz out of Connecticut in the semi-finals

         * HH fell to A&B Core (NJ) in the finals in a very good dual.

    This was an extremely fun and rewarding group of wrestlers to be around all weekend.   We had numerous honor students on this squad as well as 3 young men who are U.S. Service Academy candidates for next year (Army and Navy).  These 3 young men had congressional interviews in Indianapolis on Saturday and then had to make their way to York, PA in the whee hours of the morning to participate on Sunday.  Simply put... this group of wrestlers was a class act from top to bottom.  In addition to wrestling with grit and determination, they always displayed great sportsmanship... both in victory and defeat.

    Of our 15 wrestlers (from 8 different clubs/schools) we had 9 of them represented with parents at the event.  Great group of parents and awfully kind of them to make the 8-9 hour trip to support their wrestler and the team.  Thank you for safely transporting the team as well.

    I want to thank all of the club and high school coaches and parents who I corresponded with over the past 6 weeks in filling this competitive squad.

    Thank you to Coach O'Brien, Coach Janney and Coach Smith for all of your efforts with the team this weekend.  It takes a lot of coordination to get 15 kids, from all over IN/OH, to an event 8 hours away; and pull off a successful effort.  These guys volunteered their time and expertise for the team and the kids this weekend.  They all offered positive leadership and coaching to the wrestlers at all times.

  5. The Team State Duals planning committee traveled to Ft. Wayne recently to meet with Coliseum officials.  The committee did a walk-thru and discussed various event components and layout with the added hall/annex that will be utilized this season.

    Issues discussed with Coliseum personnel in finding solutions:

    1.  Team seating will be moved to the "inside" of the mat area; thereby not blocking the fans' view from the bleachers.

    2.  Additional restrooms will now be available due to the addition of the third hall/annex being utilized.

    3.  Coliseum personnel assured us that they would beef up their concession areas at the event.

    4.  With the new, added space, bleachers will be able to be telescoped out further; thereby offering much more seating this year.

    Teams/schools who will be providing mat(s) for this year's event:

    *  Garrett HS (1 mat)

    *  IN Tech (1 mat)

    *  Bellmont HS (2 mats)

    *  Adams Central (3 mats)

    *  Yorktown (3 mats)

    *  New Haven (1 mat)

    *  Still looking for 1 more mat

    Respectfully Submitted,

  7. We are at 58 registered campers for this Sunday's camp.  We will wrestle in our main gym.  Certainly have room for more wrestlers.

    If interested, send Coach McCormick an email to register.

    Have had 4 more state placers register this week.  We have 30+ state placers/qualifiers and 10+ district qualifiers.

    Wrestlers from 90 lbs -- 260 lbs.  Plenty of solid drill partners for everyone.  Going to be a great training environment!

  8. We hit 49 registered campers today.  This is an outstanding opportunity for great drill partners and to practice under the tutelage of an NCAA Div. 1 wrestling coach who also navigates his team through the additional military lifestyle required by a U.S. service academy.  Going to be an awesome day of training and wrestling!

  9. We have recently had more IN and OH state placers register for this camp.  We are now at 46 campers.  This is an outstanding group of young men.  It will be a great day of wrestling.  Still a few slots open.  Would like to hit 50 campers. Let me know if you would like to attend.  After I receive an email from a wrestler wanting to register for this camp, I will send you a "camp notes" email with more details.  Thank you -- Coach McCormick

  10. Congratulations Gunnar (and Mr. and Mrs. Larson) on your commitment to West Point!  In watching you interact with the WP wrestlers on your official visit, you fit right in with this group of guys.  They live by the motto...  "Duty, Honor, Country!"  WP is a great fit for you Gunnar.  You have a strong moral compass and a strong desire to work hard both physically and academically.  Go Army!

  11. Camp is over half full.  Looking to hit 40 wrestlers.

    This camp will offer an intense atmosphere with drilling and live wrestling components.

    If anyone has been to Coach Ward's Army WP Ranger Style camp in the summer, you know he runs an outstanding practice room.

    Whether you are simply looking to supplement your pre-season training regimen or you are preparing for a national tournament, this camp will get you what you need.  It will also be a chance for wrestlers to interact with an NCAA DI head coach and ask collegiate wrestling questions.

    Email Coach McCormick if interested in attending and we will put you on the camp roster.
