He can get that, but can't even get a mention in his local newspaper for winning. #pumpkinballforever

Echemendia is every bit as physical as Mendez, wrestles a very similar style and is perhaps just as quick as Mendez. Watching that match as a Mendez fan myself, that 3rd period was bad for my health; but boy was it something to behold as a fan of the sport. That match literally could have gone either way in an instant. Just glad it went Mendez way this time.

So true. And if you're a Woods guy, I think last year was the real "rip your heart out" year. Compared to this year, I think he was just slightly back up the hill at his true apex then. And a once-in-a-lifetime throw by a guy who's never hit a throw took what was so nearly his.

I think he was the reason Swiderski went to 149.  Echemendia is the real deal.

It's funny, too, how matchups matter. Woods controlled Echemendia twice, Mendez pushed Woods around--but Echemendia was such a handful for Mendez.

I think he ended up wrestling the perfect match. He pressured, pressured, pressured, wore him down, and kept testing the waters to snipe a low attack all through the last half of the match before finally getting that opening at the death. It was absolutely perfect and he needed every second to pull it off. What a thing of beauty!

More specifically with our Indiana interests in Session 1:

    C-Rooks and Baumann lost
Bates and Willham won their pigtails before losing in the genuine first round
Mendez, Lemley, G-Rooks, Lee, Allred, Davison all won

IU got 3 of 6 into the Round of 16.

Purdue got Ramos through (barely!) but lost their other 4 matches.

    Session 2 at 7pm ET/6pm CT

Fun first round...a few things I saw:

--Nothing comes easy in this tournament! So many high seeds got pushed.
--The jury's still out on Starocci. He didn't look like Starocci from this season, but he didn't need to.
--Blake Boarman should have been in this tournament. Both of the other ranked guys from his conference that were in a 3-way results ring-around-the-rosey with him during the duals had very impressive R32 wins. And the 3rd guy that got an automatic bid won the 32/33 match over Cayden Rooks.
--IU has 3 guys with legit shots at being AAs. Lee continues to get it done in tight matches. G-Rooks continues to never show any quit and be a handful for anyone. And #23 Fongaro got a huge upset--coupled with the #26 also getting an upset so that he's now a 50/50 to get to the quarters.
--Allred also got a big favor with the #26 from VA Tech upsetting #7 Glazier. Glazier crushed Allred during the year--but Silas tends to be about as steady as they come against guys he should beat. If he keeps his nerve and gets to the quarters, he obviously has two shots to win matches that would earn him AA status.

This past weekend I attended the ISWA event at Warren Central.  I wasn't gonna do a review, but I had more than a few denizens of the Indiana wrestling scene ask me to do one.  So, here I am.  First, I'm not sure if these are the hot dogs that Warren usually sells, or if these are from an ISWA contracted vendor.  Anyways, at first glance, the hot dog did not look appealing.  It looked plucked right out of the movie "Nothing but Trouble" that starred Dan Aykroyd, Chevy Chase, and the late, great John Candy(who pulled double duty).  I was ready to put buying this hot dog into my worst decisions of my life category, which includes getting married, accepting the Clockwork Orange therapy to avoid a curfew ticket, and eating a hot dog from Hanover Central.  Fortunately, it wasn't that bad.  It wasn't good, but, it was at least two steps above Alpo.  3 slices of pizza outta 8
Next weekend I'm going to Iowa, and on St Patrick's day, I'll be at Mooresville highschool.  Hopefully the luck o' Irish will strike and the hot dog gods will gift me another outstanding experience at the home of the Pioneers.  Thank you for reading.

Sadly, Blake Boarman, Chattanooga (Evansville Mater Dei) 133, got put to his back and pinned when he was leading 8-0 in a match that he needed to secure a spot at NCAA nationals this weekend. Double sadly, even though he was in a good spot in the Coaches' ranking and RPI to get an at-large bid if he lost, the 133 results went haywire across the country.  A full 8 of the 27 guys at that weight who earned automatic allocations for their conferences did not earn the automatic bids. There are only 6 at-large bids to be handed out, and, as it turns out, among those 8 unlucky losers, Blake is ranked 7th. He would be the final guy not to get into the tournament at 133 if the committee decides to stick to its pre-tournament assessments. Several of the other "losers" were ranked near him, and I'm not sure what's happening with the injury situation of Wells from Minnesota, so not all is lost. But it's not looking great.

So here's a twist: In the Big Ten, Bouzakis of Ohio St. and Wells of Minnesota didn't earn their allocations and stand in front of Boarman in the line for that last NCAAs bid. One of the things that happened there was a seeding glitch: Brody Teske of Iowa didn't get a seed (well..automatically fell to 14th) because he won the Iowa wrestle-off too late for his information to be submitted for a seed. He takes out 3-seed Bouzakis, who falls into the wrestle backs and loses to 4-seed Van Dee. If Teske had been seeded, he would have been the #6, and he would have had a first round match with Cayden Rooks, who would have dropped a line from his given #10 to #11. Even if Cayden had wrestled lights out, he would have arguably lost that match to the hot Teske. Making a long story short...Bouzakis would have likely gotten 4th to 6th, even with how he wrestled this weekend; Teske would have placed about the same as he did; and Rooks would have had to face Van Dee of Nebraska in the Consi 2nd Round. Assuming he'd lost that match as he did this weekend (11-6), Bouzakis would have gotten the automatic bid and Rooks wouldn't have.  ....And Blake Boarman would be sitting in the final NCAAs bid position instead of one spot out.

Obviously, Cayden Rooks earned his spot, and Indiana wrestling fans who know his story--among whom I am one--are ecstatic. And obviously Blake Boarman put himself where he is by not finishing the job on Saturday. But what a twist of fate that one Indiana native who just lost 9-8 to another Indiana native just a couple weeks ago might have subbed in to his NCAAs spot in his last-gasp year--in part because of a seeding rule technicality!

That’s a lot of if ands and buts, and always happens every year to more than one wrestler. I’m amazed at how you did all this placement diving to get to a conclusion! Did you graduate at  the top of your class?

If we want to dig even deeper into this point: I think our whole culture teaches us that being happy is the meaning of life. Which is all well and good. But the way happiness is defined nowadays has evolved into this: "obsessively chase what you think should be yours so you can be happy for you." That's a counterfeit happiness--it's a rigid individualism and potentially narcissism. True happiness doesn't happen on an island. It happens in relationships and in respect of community. Relationships involve self-sacrifice--the opposite of "get mine for me." As a parent, I'm trying to learn better how to teach "chase your dreams" in a way that also involves celebrating others' successes. It's tough to do!!

You can see it in the schools as well, parents coming in a cussing out teachers and principals right in front of the student.  Parents are not trying to be parents anymore, in my opinion, but they rather be best friends with their kids.
