  17. Cinderella finally prevails Hanover edges McCutcheon to win Harvest Classic title for first time December 5, 2010BY KEVIN O'KEEFE, POST-TRIBUNE CORRESPONDENT http://www.post-trib.com/sports/highschools/2945696,wrs-harvest-1205.article Font Size Email Bookmark Black Text White TextST. JOHN -- Hanover Central wrestling coach Nick Petrov has been close before, but his Wildcats team could never get over the hump. That is, until this year. The Wildcats took top team honors in Saturday's 30th annual Robert Emerick Harvest Classic held at Lake Central. Hanover outscored second place McCutcheon 208-196.5. "We've finished, third and fourth a few times. We've had stronger teams than today, but today, we finally won this thing," Petrov said. "We have a young group of kids and everyone believes in what we're doing here, everyone did their job today. Every wrestler, every win counts. Not that many points determine the difference between a championship and second place." Freshman Steven Micic and Junior Paul Petrov got Hanover off to a great start with championships at 103 and 112 pounds. Micic had a 15-0 technical fall over Penn's Taylor Hart and Petrov outlasted Griffith's Brian Orzehowicz 7-2. Lake Central junior and 2009 state champion Kyle Ayersman pinned Highland's Danny Rodriguez at 119 pounds in a rematch of last year's Harvest Championship. It was Ayersman's third Harvest weight class title, leading to being named the outstanding wrestler of the day. "I'm pretty tired," Ayersman said. "The finals against Rodriguez was my toughest match of the day. I need to keep working hard, we've go some tough meets coming up." Lake Central's Bradley Wartman also won a championship at 140 pounds, pinning Hanover's Rene DeSantiago at 2:52. Highland had two champions -- sophomore Mark Maldonado at 152 and Eric Johnson pinned Hanover senior Brandon Bisping to win at 189. Hobart also boasted two champions on the day -- Tony Vasquez had a 9-3 decision over Hanover's Sean Orzel at 125 pounds and senior Joe Peco outlasted McCutcheon's Danny Gutierrez to win a 5-1 decision at 171 pounds. Griffith senior Collin Slagle won 130 pounds and Gavit senior Chris Padjzik pinned Lake Central's Mike Escobedo at 135 pounds. Kankakee Valley senior Dakota Dellahan had a hard-fought 4-1 decision over Penn's Josh Byler at 145 pounds. A special award was given to Mike Roe, the voice of the Harvest Classic. He has announced every match in every one of the 30 years the tourney has existed.

  19. I didn?t say they could beat the best teams in the state. I said they could wrestle with the best team in the state. My understanding is that Penn is planning to send more than one team to multiple competitions on the same dates. For example this weekend they are sending one team to Franklin and one to the Harvest Classic at Lake Central. Most of those young men we wrestled at North Newton would be starters on many teams in our state. I was complementing the Penn program for their successes. I feel this is great for our state and wrestling. Nick Petrov Hanover Central Wrestling

  21. http://www.siuecougars.com/sports/m-wrestl/spec-rel/052010aaa.html SIUE Wrestling Inks Three Standouts for 2010-2011 Season Strengthens Team's Depth May 20, 2010 EDWARDSVILLE, ILL. - Southern Illinois University Edwardsville wrestling Coach David Ray continues to strengthen the depth on his team with the addition of three new student-athletes to the lineup. The Cougars have added Cole Brandt (Avon, Ind.), John Petrov (Cedar Lake, Ind.) and Tyler Rice (Pinckneyville) to next season's roster. Brandt and Petrov signed National Letters of Intent while Rice has accepted an offer of admission. Brandt is a projected 174- or 184-pounder for the Cougars. A two-time IHSAA state qualifier for Avon High School, he posted a 33-4 record his senior season and won the sectional, regional, and county tournaments while being ranked as high as No. 2 in the state of Indiana. He also won the county, conference and sectional titles as a junior. A gold medalist at the 2009 Disney Duals, Brandt placed fourth at 189 pounds at the 2010 Asics Folkstyle Nationals. "Cole is a very strong and talented student-athlete," said Ray. "He will add a solid foundation to the wrestling program. Cole has Division I All-American capabilities if he stays focused in the classroom and concentrates on improving every year. I expect to see great things from Cole in the future." Petrov completed his prep career at Hanover Central High School with a 153-22 record. A three-time IHSAA state qualifier and three-time sectional tournament champion, Petrov placed sixth during the 2010 state tournament. A projected 125-pounder for the Cougars, he was named honorable mention Academic All-State. He also was named the team's Most Valuable Wrestler and team captain as a senior. "John not only has a lot of wrestling experience but comes from a high school and family rich with tradition and success," Ray said. "John's dad is the high school coach at Hanover Central and NCAA champion Andrew Howe, of the University of Wisconsin, graduated from there. John knows what it takes to be successful at the Division I level. It all comes down to making the commitment and sacrifice to reach his goals. John will be a positive influence at 125. I definitely see John making a big contribution to the team's success in the next 4-5 years." Rice is coming off his most successful prep season with a 35-6 record as a senior at Pinckneyville High School. A projected 184-pounder, Rice posted a career record of 96-34. He placed sixth at 171 pounds at the 2010 IHSA state championships. As a junior, he finished 30-7 with all seven losses coming against state-ranked wrestlers. Rice earned letters in wrestling for four seasons, in football for three seasons, and in track and field for two seasons. "Tyler is a hard worker. He is very disciplined and wants to be successful whenever he steps on the wrestling mat to compete," Ray said. "His track record shows he wants to get better, to make the commitment, and to be the best he can be. Every year in high school his record improved. Tyler will add needed depth in the upper weights. His goal is clear: to be the best wrestler on the team at his weight class." -siue cougars-
  22. By Nate Ulrich - Times Columnist | Posted: Thursday, May 13, 2010 12:00 am | No Comments Posted Font Size:Default font sizeLarger font sizeIf there was ever a shiny, polished trophy designated for Northwest Indiana's greatest "wrestling family," it would go to the Petrov clan of Cedar Lake. You simply can't miss them at wrestling functions in the Region. They're too visible, too intense and too good to blend in with the crowds. When it comes to local meets, they're as omnipresent as singlets and funky odors. Hanover Central senior John Petrov, the middle child of Nick and Bessie's three boys, recently bolstered his family's wrestling legacy by signing a national letter of intent to continue his career at the University of Southern Illinois-Edwardsville. He's expecting to start for the Cougars as a 125-pound freshman. How is this different than any other college commitment, you might ask? Well, George, the oldest Petrov boy, graduated from Hanover Central in 2007 and went on to wrestle for Purdue University. And Hanover Central sophomore Paul, the youngest Petrov boy, is the most talented of the bunch and certainly will attract several suitors from Division I programs in the near future. But there's a twist to this tale: Nick, who's Hanover Central's wrestling coach, swears he doesn't send his boys to college for wrestling. He sends them for a more important reason, one that he and Bessie hammer home with the same passion they display during their boys' mat adventures. "The most important thing is that my boys get a good college education," Nick said. "If wrestling is the tool that gives us the opportunity to get that education, to help us with that, that's awesome because after wrestling is over, there's probably not a lot of things they're gonna be able to do with wrestling, except to teach other kids about the sport. But the life lessons that come along with it should help them have good character and be better people." Sounds too good to be true, huh? Like pure coach speak, right? With the Petrovs, though, it's a genuine answer. For example, John wants to become an elementary school teacher, maybe even a principal one day. About 60 percent of his tuition at SIU-Edwardsville will be covered by his scholarship, but John said he would have declined the Cougars' offer and chosen another school if the academics were not a good fit. Fortunately for Cougars wrestling coach David Ray, John will be able to major in elementary education at SIU-Edwardsville, whose campus is about a 25-minute drive from downtown St. Louis. "I'm going to school to become an elementary teacher," said John, who has a 3.4 grade-point average. "I'm not going to school to be a wrestler. (Elementary education is) what brought me there in the first place. If they didn't have that, then I wouldn't have gone there." The Petrovs might be the area's greatest "wrestling family," but they're also just a great family, wrestling or no wrestling. This column solely represents the writer's opinion.
