  1. His shoe came untied for the last 2 stallings.
  2. Once again, if they didn't determine the TEAM title off of placement points, it would be different. Wrestlebacks should and do win team titles. (Look at NCAAs) our tourney shouldn't be any different.
  3. You didn't seriously just equate MS wrestling to high school wrestling did you? Look the facts of the matter is, there are tourneys with significantly better competition than a MS State qualifier. That's just the facts of the matter. It has nothing to do with our kids being "too good" for it. The long term priorities are just different.
  4. We have the funding. It seems to be the desire to just keep all the qualifying rounds to 1 day tournaments more than anything else.
  5. I would agree with you if there was still a team duals state champion. But if the only team title being given out is at the individual tournament, the only way to accurate determine the better tournament team is with wrestlebacks to third and dual elimination. There are team points being left on the table solely due to to draw, not due to who is actually good enough to finish in the place they do. It matters. Everything Leading up to state is fine, to me, the cream rises to the top through semi state. Very rarely does a placement worthy kid not make it to state.
  6. I mean you have wrestlebacks at sectionals and regionals. I don't know why semi state doesn't, but regardless, losing the first match at state and you're out when there's team titles at stake as well is ridiculous
  7. Here's a crazy idea. Since the individual placements affect the team title. Have full wrestlebacks. That's literally the only change that needs to be made. Bigger brackets are not it. Just get rid of one and done, make it double elimination and do wrestlebacks to 3rd. That's all that needs to happen. There aren't 32 kids at each weight that can compete for a title. That's just the reality.
  8. Angelo will not be giving up 2 weekends for it either.
  9. I'd be ok with a qualifier if there was some kind of auto qualifying criteria for the top tier kids. The top tier kids are probably off doing a bigger tournament and honestly, what you'll probably see, is over time, the middle school state will start to be looked at by those kids as a secondary tourney that they aren't going to essentially give up 2 weeks in their schedule for. Just my opinion though. I could be off base.
  10. Angelo Vargo just beat Semi State Champ and state placer Hayden DeMarco at King of the Ring today. 5-1.
  11. I can respect that. I also agree that wrestlebacks should be the priority, if only because of team title implications.
  12. True. It currently wouldn't solve that problem, but the semi states all go in cycles and we cant redistribute every time the cycle shifts to balance them out. It's at all levels of wrestling right? I wouldn't think that NCAAs gets the best 33 kids in the bracket every year because not all conference Champs are equal. But we can at least get the best 16 that can come out of the system vs what we have now. But at a minimum because of how we crown a team champ, there has to be true wrestlbacks at state. Just my opinion.
  13. If the goal is the best 16 wrestlers to state, then there needs to be true wrestlebacks at all the state series levels. Also, since we are crowning a team champ with a individual tournament, there should also be true wrestlebacks and no one and done 1st round. Might have had a different team champ this year with wrestlebacks.
  14. Thank you, I appreciate that. That match was phenomenal.
  15. Angelo Vargo is in 6th grade. Also, was undefeated at NUWAY state based duals.
  16. I think if you want to grow small school wrestling it involves a couple things: 1) the high school coach NEEDS to be a major factor in creating a youth feeder program. 2) Install a coach with the same philosophy as you at the middle school. 3) Put your kids on the mat with the big schools, consistently. Show them they can roll with the big boys. 4) Get the community involved big time. I think all of these things will allow a small school to grow and stay consistently competitive, without lowering the bar for competition by classing the state. Another option, you could class the state tournament into big school small school, i.e 1A / 2A and 3A/4A through semi state, have 4 big school and 4 small school semi states and then throw them into a 32 man single class bracket at state with true wrestlebacks still placing top 8. Just a compromise idea there from my point of view.
  17. Greco-Roman? Lol no. Freestyle? 100%. The girls wrestle Freestyle in college. There's literally no reason for Folk style to be a thing anymore.
  18. California has a single class tournament and so does New Jersey. Doesn't seem to be hurting their participation. Maybe us as a wrestling community are hurting participation, maybe the focus on weight cutting instead of improving wrestling skill is hurting participation. Let's be honest, the wrestling community does a crap job of promoting the sport of wrestling. Strong youth wrestling and running youth clubs for the right reasons, especially when they are like 10 and under, will do wonders for participation. A classed state tournament doesn't increase participation, it decreases the quality of competition at all levels because it spreads top tier wrestlers out across multiple classes. A small school with a strong youth program will put state champions on the mat. How many high school coaches are putting the time in to set up a feeder program for their middle schools? How many are showing their faces at those practices, even if it's might be once a week or a couple times a month and building relationships with their future prospective wrestlers? Look at what happened when they classed basketball in Indiana. It destroyed a world class state series and objectively made the quality of the games and competition worse.
  19. Now you know that wasn't the intention of the post. I'm saying I just came from a 4 class state and it's very very rare there for small schools to put top notch kids out there because they don't have to to have their kids win state titles. So they only coach them to beat their level of competition.
  20. We just watched 3 schools have their first state Champs ever and a 4th with its first ever finalist. I would argue the single class system pushes the kids at small schools that want to succeed, to get there. Now if we could convince the IHSAA to bring back the duals championship in a 4 class format, you got my vote there.
