  1. I’m not really familiar with the wrestling or its history from the northeast corner beyond stories of Bellmont or early to mid-2010s Yorktown. Would someone be willing to fill me in on some names or give me some all stars from the area or the semi-state? I’m intrigued to know more about Fort Wayne area wrestling.
  2. Here are the biggest storylines of the 2022-23 season as we head into the final stretch and approach the postseason. Individual Hockaday and Jackson on a Collision Course for State History: The Slicer senior looks to cap his career with a third consecutive state championship while the Bulldog sophomore is determined to keep his dream of being a four-time state champion alive. The Heavyweight Arena Battle: Heavyweight has been very competitive this year and there are several contenders to take the championship, but the favorite on paper is nationally-ranked senior Leighton Jones of Brownsburg. The four-star Iowa football recruit has finished third in the last two seasons and he once again finds himself ranked first among the pack. Despite a loss Saturday to returning state medalist Hosia Smith of Cathedral, Jones finished the day with a statement victory over fellow nationally-ranked and State #2 heavyweight Paul Clark of Crown Point. However, with the field being so tough, this isn't a clear enough indicator of who shall reign supreme at Gainbridge; the title is surely up for grabs. One More Obstacle for Schoeff: The Oriole senior has finished as a runner-up twice in his last three seasons. With a 9-3 record at Gainbridge and two of those losses coming to the same person, Schoeff looks to go 4-0 downtown as a senior. In his way, however, is returning top-ranked 138-pound state runner-up Cole Solomey of Kankakee Valley, whom he has never lost to. Will Schoeff finally realize his dream or will Solomey earn his first victory over his rival and deny him in the finals for a third time? The 132 Arena Battle: Just like Heavyweight, 132 is absolute insanity to say the least. Headlined by returning state champion Kyrel Leavell of Warren Central, this weight features 12 returning state qualifiers, three of whom are undefeated against in-state competition. While Leavell is the favorite, he isn't quite a lock as the battle-tested and returning state medalist Brady Ison and the always improving returning state runner-up Joey Buttler look to make a run for the title. Welcome to the Party, Ladies: Julianna O'Campo of Fort Wayne Snider became the first girl to win the prestigious Al Smith Invitational in the tournament's history, and along with Heather Crull and Crown Point's Rianne Murphy, they look to become the first ever female state medalists in Indiana wrestling history. Team Crown Point Looks to Make History... Again!: Coming off of a season where the Bulldogs in red crowned three champions from six finalists and broke the IHSAA State Finals record for most points scored, the Region's premier wrestling team looks to improve and potentially put nine in the finals at Gainbridge Fieldhouse with the rival Bulldogs in purple from Brownsburg looking to potentially spoil the party in Crown Point. Rochester Trying to Keep the Dream Alive: After a surprise semi-state championship win last season and the crowning of a heavyweight champion, the Zebras have been looking to break out, and with potential strong performances from Layne Horn, Alex Deming, and the Beck brothers, they may just prove they belong with the big dogs. New Castle Resurgence: The spirit is alive and the feeling is back in Henry County. The famed Trojans of New Castle High School are experiencing a bit of a renaissance and once again producing the stories that made them great to begin with. This season is headlined by the Thrine brothers, with the younger sibling, Tylin, having a phenomenal freshman run as he is currently undefeated and ranked sixth at 126 pounds. He has compiled several bonus point victories including a statement victory over returning state medalist Blake Wolf by fall.
  3. At 285, Hosia Smith is my sleeper pick to make the finals if not win it all. He’s athletic, well coached, and he has the experience. Plus, a win over Jones today doesn’t hurt at all.
  4. Title says it all… Here are mine based on the last few weeks. Winners are in bold. 106 – Revin Dickman (Brownsburg) vs. Layne Horn (Rochester) 113 – Preston Haines (Brownsburg) vs. Gavin Jendreas (Crown Point) 120 – Jake Hockaday (Brownsburg) vs. Ashton Jackson (LaPorte) 126 – Logan Frazier (Crown Point) vs. Toby Billerman (Perry Meridian) 132 – Brady Ison (Brownsburg) vs. Kyrel Leavell (Warren Central) 138 – Cole Solomey (Kankakee Valley) vs. Cheaney Schoeff (Avon) 145 – Anthony Bahl (Crown Point) vs. Aidan Torres (Chesterton) 152 – Bryce Lowery (Roncalli) vs. Anthony Rinehart (Crown Point) 160 – Sammy Goin (Crown Point) vs. AJ Steenbeke (Penn) 170 – Cody Goodwin (Crown Point) vs. Delaney Ruhlman (Bloomington South) 182 – Orlando Cruz (Crown Point) vs. De’Alcapon Veazy (Snider) 195 – Gunner Henry (Brownsburg) vs. Luke Hansen (Roncalli) 220 – Will Clark (Crown Point) vs. Brady Beck (Rochester) 285 – Leighton Jones (Brownsburg) vs. Paul Clark (Crown Point)
  5. Shout out to Columbus East for believing in themselves by fighting for that vote-in spot and making the finals. Good program with tough kids who are always well coached.
  6. I want to give credit to @Disco, as I saw this topic discussed on the college board, and figured I’d bring it here. How would you all feel if we saw more teams pick and choose regular season tournaments and hold out their best until the postseason? As Disco previously stated, on the Division I level we see that having 30+ matches is no longer necessary to win a championship in the postseason. The same could be said for the high school level, and with the depth of teams like Brownsburg, Crown Point, EMD, and Perry Meridian and some programs having “Varsity 2” teams, it would create an opportunity to allow teams to develop deeper, battle-tested rooms while also keeping starters fresh and giving them the proper time to nurse injuries or cut weight.
  7. He and Tommy Forte were on the original list but I replaced them with Devon Jackson and Brayton Lee.
  8. 2000s Team 103/106: Cody Phillips (Union County), 2-time champion (2009-10) 112/113: Anthony Hawkins (Crown Point), champion (2009) 119/120: Jose Escobedo (Griffith), champion (2004) 125/126: Josh Harper (Mishawaka), 3-time champion (2006-08) 130/132: Reece Humphrey (Lawrence North), 3-time champion (2002-05) 135/138: Angel Escobedo (Griffith), 4-time champion (2002-05) 140/145: Steve Sandefer (Mishawaka), 2-time champion (2008-09) 145/152: Alex Tsirtsis (Griffith), 4-time champion (2001-04) 152/160: Matt Coughlin (Evansville Mater Dei), 2-time champion (2004-05) 160/170: Andrew Howe (Hanover Central), 3-time champion (2006-08) 171/182: Blake Maurer (Evansville Mater Dei), 4-time champion (2001-04) 189/195: Nate Moore (Perry Meridian), 2-time champion (2001-02) 215/220: Jake O’Brien (Franklin Central), 3-time champion (2001-03) 275/285: Chico Adams (Perry Meridian), 2-time champion (2007-08) 2010s Team 106: Nathan Boston (Lawrence North), champion (2011) 113: Jarred Brooks (Warsaw), champion (2012) 120: Brock Hudkins (Danville), 2-time champion (2015-16) 126: Stevan Micic (Hanover Central), 3-time champion (2012-14) 132: Chad Red (New Palestine), 4-time champion (2013-16) 138: Devon Jackson (Yorktown), champion (2012) 145: Jason Tsirtsis (Crown Point), 4-time champion (2009-12) 152: Brayton Lee (Brownsburg), 3-time champion (2016-18) 160: Jacob Covaciu (Merrillville), 2-time champion (2015-16) 170: Drew Hughes (Lowell), 2-time champion (2015-16) 182: Blake Rypel (Cathedral), 2-time champion (2015-16) 195: Mitch Sliga (Fishers), 2-time champion (2012-13) 220: Mason Parris (Lawrenceburg), 3-time champion (2016-18) 285: Shawn Streck (Merrillville), 2-time champion (2015-16) 2020s Team 106: Ashton Jackson (LaPorte), 2-time champion (2021-22) 113: Alex Cottey (Perry Meridian), 2-time champion (2020-21) 120: Sergio Lemley (Chesterton), champion (2021) 126: Logan Frazier (Crown Point), champion (2022) 132: Zeke Seltzer (Cathedral), 3-time champion (2020-22) 138: Jesse Mendez (Crown Point), 4-time champion (2019-22) 145: Alec Viduya (Roncalli), 2-time champion (2017, 2020) 152: J Conway (Floyd Central), 2-time champion (2021-22) 160: Brody Baumann (Evansville Mater Dei), 2-time champion (2021-22) 170: Bryer Hall (East Central), champion (2021) 182: Gabe Sollars (Evansville Mater Dei), 2-time champion (2021-22) 195: Silas Allred (Shenandoah), 2-time champion (2019-20) 220: Christian Carroll (New Prairie), champion (2022) 285: Reeve Muncie (Carroll), champion (2021)
  9. As we roll into Team State with the major holiday tournaments over, who are some names you believe could make a deep run to the podium or championship match in the state tournament series this February?
  10. My boy @FCFIGHTER170 told everyone he was this good
  11. Keaton Morton of Perry Meridian is wrestling with a different mentality right now. He’s currently ranked 16th in the state at 132 lbs. as a two-time state qualifier. His lone loss this season is a 9-7 decision to returning state champion Kyrel Leavell of Warren Central. He ran the table at the Mater Dei Holiday Classic this past week racking up two bonus point victories with a first round fall followed by a technical fall in the quarterfinals; he would go on to receive a forfeit in the semifinals which pushed him to the finals where he beat fifth-ranked Coy Hammack of Tell City in a 7-4 decision. He is going to surprise a lot of people as the postseason rolls around.
  12. As we hit the halfway point, who is still unbeaten thus far into the season?
  13. #16 Keaton Morton over #5 Coy Hammack, 7-4 for the 132 Championship at the Mater Dei Holiday Classic
  14. This Crown Point team is scary. SEVEN champions at Al Smith.
  15. Noah Schweizer, and yes, I remember him. He was beating guys like Trent Pruitt, Preston Mantel, and Forrest Glogouski in years they were downtown at State. He beat Glogouski in 2014 after he already got state runner-up and was about to become an All-American at Senior Nationals.
  16. Had to have been Baumann because Ross was a 4X State Qualifier. That is insane. A two-time champ didn’t even crack the lineup as a freshman.
  17. I don’t know if any other school’s have done this, but Perry Meridian from 2011-2015 produced a great crop of state-level 125/126-pound wrestlers and also from 2012-2017 produced a great crop of 132-pound wrestlers. 125/126 2011: Jared McKinley, Champion at 125 lbs. 2012: Cody LeCount, Runner-Up at 126 lbs. 2013: Brandon James, 5th at 126 lbs. 2014: Aidan Kenny, Qualifier at 126 lbs. 2015: Ngun Uk, 6th at 126 lbs. 132 2012: Jared McKinley, Champion at 132 lbs. 2013: Cody LeCount, Champion at 132 lbs. 2014: Brandon James, Runner-Up at 132 lbs. 2016: D.J. Brookbank, 7th at 132 lbs. 2017: Jack Servies, Qualifier at 132 lbs. Note: 2015, #9 Jordan Napier was a regional champion and got beat in the ticket round 3-2 by Evan Eldred from Westfield Pretty solid stuff from the boys in blue out south to have seen success at those weights.
  18. Crown Point has nine wrestlers ranked either first or second in our state rankings with five ranked nationally. Do you think there is a chance they put nine in the finals at Gainbridge?
  19. Most Team Points Crown Point (2021-22) – 178.0 Evansville Mater Dei (2002-03) – 158.0 (unofficial) Perry Meridian (2012-13) – 124.5 (unofficial) / 102.5 (official) Evansville Mater Dei (2020-21) – 112.0 Warren Central (2015-16) – 109.5
  20. I believe that team scored 124.5 team points unofficially. Insane.
  21. He was 167, so he’ll be in the 170 Super Bracket
