  1. As a relative newbie to these bigger meets, was there some kind of qualifier for these athletes to attend the US Open?? Also notice that the age ranges are off from the normal FS/GR meets for say Schoolboy or Cadet for the State competitions, etc...
  2. Hey Coach- The first posting for this showed $20 fee for non-Perry/Franklin wrestlers with a required registration...now saying free and just show up... Wondering which is correct, just don't want to screw it up....thanks for hosting!!
  3. Yup, you sure got them...if it weren't for their multiple recent state champions and their kids signing some sweet scholarships to great programs, they would probably lose sleep over you not approving of how they did it
  4. Center Grove team title...you heard it here first!!
  5. Couldn't agree more...we talk alot about wanting more participation in the sport especially from our football players but we continue to limit the spots for bigger guys in favor of the smaller weights. I know it's meant to reflect the college rosters, but keeping more kids involved through high school grows the sport. It's a tough sell for recruiting athletes to get them to sign up to go out and give up 50+ pounds trying to compete. It feels like we have painted ourselves into a corner where the argument against additional upper weights is limited athletes participating and the obstacle impeding getting more athletes is there isn't a spot for them to wrestle!
  6. Quick question because I honestly don't know, not because I'm trying to stir something up... On tournaments such as this with the high school and middle school classifications...is it set up strictly off school grade registered? I know that freestyle/greco tournaments all based off birth year. So is that the cut off...Folkstyle is academic grade in school and olympic styles are age based?? Do the participants have to provide like a school transcript, because their USA card wouldn't cover that? Then, how would that work for home schooling??
  7. First, the fact that "VisionQuest" is pointing out that the best can be beaten, is Awesome...great movie Second: It is correct that the record book will always list R. Talamantes as the 92 champ...he beat all the available opponents...no asterisks (except the giant one in my brain) As far as what would have happened....COME ON!! There are good/great wrestlers...and then there are next level DUDES...David was that DUDE...this all went down at a time where he hadn't lost for a couple years in North America..in any style...Double National champ '92 FS/Greco...etc... Rico had the best (hands down) name over the loud speakers, but thats the only thing he would have won that day
  8. I guess I should not "over generalize" and make assumptions. The two-thirds of students that received scholarships must have been for academics or faith based and the 30+ years of dominant wrestling, football, girls volleyball and soccer were happy little accidents, "Bob Ross Style" It truly doesnt matter if they pay you or you pay them, it was a choice. So like minded families and individuals were able to come together and fill a wrestling room/school to push that talent up...Iron sharpens Iron It is NOT a short cut or anything like that, the success is built of great coaching and individuals hours of blood, sweat, and tears that created your schools success! But, you can't claim it as a more pure scenario than open enrollment!! You could bring together anyone willing to pay the tuition as a private school, so however it was afforded, you were able to benefit from that option for several decades before open enrollment was given to all. Essentially you've been a small Southern Indiana private wrestling academy. I'd challenge you to talk to some of the other coaches from Evansville and say New Albany and see if they don't feel like they've lost some talent along the years..Mater Dei's success is a draw, others see it and want it, congrats for that, it's awesome! But don't downplay others for more recent success...thats the point
  9. Only Mater Dei kids is an interesting assertion... Isn't Mater Dei a small, private, Catholic institution without geographic borders or townships, etc...that is able to offer scholarships as it sees fit??
  10. First off, I think it's important to point out that none of this discussion is being made as a negative to the EMD kid, those two were quite even opponents, thats how you get to a discussion of OT..and there is absolutely nothing to say that with OT the outcome would have been any different. I was also called out for using the word "cheated" previously...I had no intention of implying that the ref started out his day with the idea of intentionally doing any harm to any wrestler...and I apologize if it read that way. My question is this....what word(s) would you use if trying to explain this to the OV kid?? "I am sorry, Bryce. You did escape as caught on video, we awarded you the point, as caught on video...the table staff disagreed with the call, as caught on audio and didn't award you said point...and although we had TWO referees responsible for nothing other than the scoring of your match, couldn't keep track of the score that SHOULD have totaled a whopping 4 points in 6min...then neither could be bothered to review it with the OV coaches when they questioned it...because they had NOWHERE else to be as it was the last match of the ticket round! But don't feel cheated...it was just unfortunate! They did not CHEAT him, those adults FAILED him
  11. That fits with how things went down in the arena. I can't certify order of events, but the Cool/Calm demeanor of the OV coaches I think reflected that they felt they had the 1point to fall back on! Like a safety net of sorts...they recognized the reversal was borderline, but the escape was clear...so they didn't overreact to the 2pt being wiped. It was when they realized that the 1pt wasn't put on the board that they attempted to run over, but to no avail..then they were left to console a heartbroken senior who had been cheated...should have been decided ON THE MAT
  12. This is a tough topic for many reasons 1st: Humans are not perfect, nor should we expect them to be 2nd: Refs are a starved market: I agree, initially new (younger) refs may not solve everything...but it has to happen! ALOT of the refs still doing this have significant arthritic conditions that prevent them from getting into the right positions to make calls, the only way to fix that is newer/younger refs Also, I completely agree with the statement that wrestling has changed...there is a definite nuance to the complicated scrambles today's wrestlers get into and knowing when to blow the whistle/call a takedown/stop for potentially dangerous, etc is more complicated than ever...I can't pretend to know these things, but do believe that newer refs that grew up wrestling this way would have better understanding My main issue, is that at times it seems like the issue is EGO over error...as mentioned above, the ref in question was offered the opportunity to correct the situation and chose not to take that opportunity. There were other times in the tourney where other officials did change their call and got it right...I think the referees should have a procedure in place to at least report that the asst. saw differently in order to possibly see patterns of behavior...e.g: 10 different asst. referees report seeing calls differently and none were reversed...EGO...I also believe that coaches/parents should have an avenue to report at least Behavior by referees...if it exists, I haven't found it, but there was an instance earlier in season where an official was refereeing a heavyweight match...it happened to be between my son and Mr. Schott's son from above...the referee during the match on out of bounds and restarts slapped both boys on their backsides at least once apiece, twice for my son...which most might say encouraging them to keep going, however there was nothing encouraging about it... the entire match he was calling the "Ladies" and "Nancies" and calling them both for stalling and telling them to stop dancing and try wrestling...these are 2 ranked heavyweights, beating on each other!! The match went to OT and he swatted my son again, brought them both back to the circle and said: "Now one of you ladies is going home!" which was ridiculous, as it wasn't a tourney and both boys had 4 more dual meets left to wrestle! There should be an avenue to report issues and behavior like that, best I could find was leave an email for the generic IHSAA website, but they dont even promise a response...It was just an ugly example of someone's EGO trumping the kids and their effort...my wife almost got tossed from the event trying to get his name...but he shouldnt be slapping the kids or being degrading to them for all their effort, because I dare him to put his toe on the line with either one of them. Most of the refs are very nice and I appreciate them doing it, but there needs to be some recourse to protect against the bad apples for everyones sake
  13. That's the one that I was thinking of!! Couldn't remember the EMD kids name, but Market Square went crazy!! Believe that was the official introduction for most folks to the spladle itself, too!
  14. yes its listed in their state finals hub
  15. Bryan Bailey versus Toby Turner 5 matches that year Reg Season/Sec/Reg/SS/State Believe all 5 went to OT
