Aidan Sprague reacted to TysonNisley in State Finals Write-Up
Before I make any sort of predictions, I want to let you all know ahead of time that I'm gonna make a few BOLD predictions in this write-up. Could you even blame me? The state tournament thus far this year has been LOADED with crazy results and historical moments, and I think you're crazy if you don't think something out of the ordinary happens this weekend. The state tournament so far has made for a number of interesting moments at every weight, and all I have to say is that I wouldn't call anybody in any weight class a lock.

So, for these predictions, I'm going to name off what I think will be the top 4 finishers in each weight class, and provide justification for each. I'll also put up any draws that I consider to be death draws, because who doesn't like death draws? Remember, these are predictions, and some of these predictions might be a little more bold than others, but that's what predictions are for, aren't they? Besides, with a 100% accuracy rate on my East Chicago semi-state predictions (once again, don't fact check that) I can guarantee you that these are the best predictions that you will find.

    106:

    Death Draws: None

    Top 4: 1.) Hockaday   2.) Jendreas   3.) Smith   4.) Rioux

This is only the first weight class, and there are some insane stories that have come out of this weight class so far. The most notable one is probably the fact that there are not one, but TWO female wrestlers competing on Friday night, which is most certainly a first for the state of Indiana. Unfortunately, we might have to wait another year to see our first female wrestler stand on the podium, as #11 Julianna O'Campo faces #4 Gavin Jendreas Friday night, while #16 Heather Crull draws #5 Luke Rioux. Speaking of Jendreas and Rioux, both have pulled upsets so far in this tournament, with Rioux beating #1 Jake Hockaday at sectionals, and Jendreas beating #2 Jeffrey Bailey at semi-state. As a result, we are going to see the #1 and #2 wrestlers face off in the quarterfinals, with one of these talented wrestlers placing no higher than 5th. Hockaday has proved since his loss that he is still in it to win it, majoring Rioux 10-1 in the semi-state finals. As for Bailey, we will have to see how he responds to this upset loss. If he bounces back like Hockaday did, we are in for an electric Saturday morning bout. Regardless, I think that it's most probable that Hockaday and Jendreas will clash in the finals, in which I will take Hockaday in a close one. For 3rd and 4th, I see #3 Nathan Smith and Rioux facing off, which is honestly a toss-up in my opinion. Rioux has the big win over Hockaday this season, but I think Smith will ultimately come out on top. Lastly, watch for #6 Isaiah Schaefer to throw a wrench in this weight class and make a run to the finals. He is as battle tested as anyone else in this weight class, and in my opinion, despite not being in my top 4, is still a title contender.

    113:

Death Draws: #4 Evan Seng vs #7 Easton Doster

    Top 4: 1.) "Action" Jackson   2.) Haines   3.) Dickey   4.) Tishner

I used to have to say something about my "La Porte bias" when making these predictions, but at this point, I think most of the state can agree that #1 "Action" Jackson is the man to beat here. Owning a 6-2 win over #2 Evan Dickey this season, it's reasonable to think Jackson will win the rematch. Unfortunately, this rematch will not happen under the lights this year, as they are set to clash in the semis. Also on that side of the bracket is our first death draw of the tournament, with #4 Evan Seng and #7 Easton Doster set to wrestle Friday night, with the winner rewarded with Jackson the next morning. I think that Seng will win this match, but the stud freshman from New Haven should not be counted out. On the other side of the bracket, I look for #5 Tanner Tishner to make the semis with not much trouble, where he will meet #3 Preston Haines from Brownsburg, who finds himself with a desirable draw after a clutch win over Seng in the semi-state finals. I think Haines will be the man to face Jackson in the finals, where he will claim a runner-up finish in this first trip to the show.

    120:

    Death Draws: None

    Top 4: 1.) Gilbert   2.) Billerman   3.) Ruble   4.) DeMarco

I genuinely couldn't believe what I was hearing until I hopped on FloWrestling and watched it for myself. UNRANKED Jared Dunn stepped across the mat against #1 and former state champion Logan Miller at semi-state, and at the beginning of the second period, threw a historic headlock against Miller, and stuck him. Maybe one of the most insane upsets that had ever happened at the semi-state. At this point, the state of Indiana was already in shock. Dunn's semi-state run could have ended at that and people would still talk about that headlocks for years to come. Then, the ticket round comes, and Dunn is down ELEVEN points to zero to Northview's Seth Cowden. Dunn goes neutral. Throws a SECOND headlock, and punches his ticket to the state finals. Then, in the semis, down 2-0 to Dominic McFeeley of Cascade, who was coming off of his own upset victory against #14 and returning state placer Blake Zirkelbach, he throws a THIRD headlock, and brings the score to 5-2, on his way to a decision victory to make the finals. But now the whole state of Indiana knows what's coming. Does it even matter? Anybody stepping across the mat from Dunn should be scared. He did it to the #1 in the state; there's no reason he can't do it to anybody else. With that out of the way, this weight class is incredibly interesting due to a couple of talented individuals being knocked off early. In addition to Miller, #8 Seth Syra, #11 Reese Courtney and #12 Reed Egli are out due to unfortunate semi-state draws, and this weight class becomes up for grabs by a number of individuals in this weight class. I expect #2 Lane Gilbert and #6 Toby Billerman to meet in the finals, if Gilbert can survive a Saturday morning bout against #3 Kyrel Leavell, and a semis battle against #4 Ike Ruble, who has been under the lights twice, but is yet to own a state championship. #5 Hayden DeMarco is the favored wrestler in the rankings against Billerman in the semis, but Billerman is coming off an upset victory over Leavell, and will certainly not back off come this weekend. Throw in #7 Noah Lykins, who owns a dominant win over Ruble this season, and you have a wide open weight class. And of course, watch out for headlocks. Jared Dunn is not "Dunn" yet (I'm sorry).

    126:

Death Draws: #5 Kamariyon Nelson vs. #7 Tony Wood

    Top 4: 1.) Frazier   2.) Sprague   3.) Buttler   4.) Wolf

After handily beating #2 Matteo Vargo in the semi-state finals, you might be inclined to say that #1 Logan Frazier is a lock for the title. Let's just not do that this year. 3 #1's in the state have taken losses so far this tournament, and there will most certainly be more. That being said, Frazier is most certainly the man to beat here, and there are a number of potential challengers that will look to meet him under the lights. In our second death draw of the tournament, #5 Kamariyon Nelson and #7 Tony Wood are clashing for a podium spot Friday night. Nelson is not someone I have making the top 4, but he is also probably the most interesting wrestler here, as he has not competed in the state tournament since his freshman year, where he placed 6th. I expected him to do the unexpected this weekend in his last run. On the top half of the bracket, we have Vargo and #3 Aidan Sprague meeting in the quarters, where I think Sprague will pull the upset. I don't mean to diminish Vargo's talent as a wrestler, as he has only lost to the best man at this weight class, but I think Sprague's undefeated streak will give him that boost of confidence he needs to make it under the lights. For the third place match, I expect #4 Joey Buttler and #6 Blake Wolf to square off, where Buttler will win in a close one. Like I said, Frazier is definitely the man here, but after that, you could wrestle this tournament 10 more times and get 10 vastly different results.

    132:

Death Draws: #2 Brady Ison vs. #6 Elijah Anthony

    Top 4: 1.) Seltzer   2.) Bahl   3.) Schoeff   4.) Anthony

Oh yeah, I went there. After three tough Friday night draws in a row, #6 Elijah Anthony gets another horrible draw in #2 Brady Ison, who he wrestled just last year in his Friday night match, where he lost 3-2. Anthony is looking to be one of the best ever to never place if he loses Friday night, but I'm gonna make a BOLD prediction here and say that he finally makes it through to day two. Ison is as tough as they come, and this will not be a one-sided match for either of these individuals, but give me Elijah Anthony on this one. On the top half of the bracket, #3 Cheaney Schoeff has his semi-state championship win rewarded with a clash against #1 Zeke Seltzer in the semis. Schoeff will most certainly give it his all, but I think this is Seltzer's tournament to lose. Facing Seltzer on the other side of the mat in the finals is going to be #4 Anthony Bahl, who only owns losses in Indiana to Seltzer and Ison. Bahl has proven that he can hang with anybody in the state, and I expect him to take out Anthony in the semis. For 3rd and 4th, give me Schoeff over Anthony in overtime, most likely.

    138:

Death Draws: #2 Cole Solomey vs. #5 Cash Turner

    Top 4: 1.) Mendez   2.) Lowery   3.) Garcia   4.) Solomey

With no Matthew Koontz or Jared Dunn in this weight class, Mendez shouldn't have to worry about a crazy headlock spoiling his route to an incredibly impressive 4th state title. Mendez has been so incredibly dominant that it doesn't seem likely that anybody goes a full 6 minutes with him. But we'll see. The death draw of this weight class is #2 Cole Solomey and #5 Cash Turner. Both are state placers at lower weight classes, but one of them will not be placing again this year. I think Solomey will win in a very tight match. #4 Gavin Garcia had an impressive state run that included a fall against #7 Ashton Hayhurst, and I expect him to beat anybody in this weight class that isn't named Jesse Mendez. Unfortunately, Garcia will see Mendez in the semis, so that finals spot will belong to someone else. I think that #3 Bryce Lowery will be the one to see Mendez in the finals, which means I predict an upset over Solomey in the semis. This isn't a crazy upset prediction, but definitely one nonetheless. I'm curious to see if anybody can slow down Mendez this weekend.

Edit: Solomey and Lowery actually hit in the quarters (which sucks) but my upset prediction still stands. This means that Hayhurst will likely be the one to square off against Lowery, where I still think Lowery makes the finals. Hayhurst was beaten pretty convincingly by Garcia at semi-state, so I don't see a reversal happening in the 3rd and 4th place match.

    145:

Death Draws: #4 Brody Arthur vs. #6 Nick Tattini

    Top 4: 1.) Torres   2.) Watson   3.) Koontz   4.) Abbott

Flip a few coins, and you have your top 3 at this weight class. #1 Matthew Koontz and #2 Hayden Watson seemed to be the favorites at this weight class, and were expected to meet in the finals, but like so many other weights in this year's tournament, one of them will not be under the lights this year after drawing each other on the same side of the bracket. Koontz and Watson are one match a piece this season, and will settle the trilogy here in their senior seasons. Get your popcorn ready for this one. That being said, #3 Aidan Torres was on FIRE at semi-state, getting an impressive major decision win over #6 Nick Tattini, and is looking to meet the winner of Koontz and Watson in the finals. Torres wrestled Watson earlier this season, where he lost a close 8-7 bout, so it's not unrealistic here for Torres to pull the upset against either of the top ranked foes, and that is what I'm predicting here. Unfortunately for the aforementioned Nick Tattini, he has drawn into #4 Brody Arthur, who has been getting better VERY quickly, and can spoil anyone's day at this tournament. I'm not going to predict an upset here, but I dop think that he beats Tattini Friday night, and will have a heck of a match against Watson Saturday morning. For the 4th place spot, I think #5 Toby Abbott makes the semis with relative ease, where Torres will be waiting in the semis for him. He will have to wrestle fantastically to overthrow any of the top 3 at this weight class.

Edit: Matthew Koontz is actually undefeated on the year and him and Watson have only had one battle this year, with Koontz winning by one point. Watson started the year as the #1 in the state, so I confused that as Watson "winning" at the beginning of the year. Regardless, I still think that Watson is going to win the semis match, but this match will be very exciting. Both of these wrestlers have wrestled under the lights before, so it's interesting to me that one of them will not be returning to this spot.

    152:

Death Draws: #4 Alex Currie vs. #5 Hunter May

    Top 4: 1.) Goin   2.) Ruhlman   3.) Glithero   4.) Betz

This bracket is all sorts of scrambled after an eventful semi-state weekend with plenty of upsets. #13 Mitchell Betz defied the rankings and maintained his undefeated record with an impressive 11-3 major decision over #4 Alex Currie. I know that in this state tournament, you aren't always rewarded for hard fought wins, but Betz most certainly did, with all of the top 5 hammers in his weight class outside his quarter bracket, and #1 Sam Goin on the opposing side. I've never heard of Betz before this year, and I'm not willing to give him enough credit yet to take out #2 Anthony Rinehart or #3 Delaney Ruhlman, but I will give him the nod against #6 Tyler Jones, who is coming off of a loss against the next wrestler I'll be talking about: #7 Kody Glithero. I've said for a couple years now that Glithero was an underrated wrestler, even before he stole a win against Cottey and put himself on the map. Last weekend, he threw his name in the list of title contenders with an overtime with against Rinehart in the semis of semi-state, and then a 12-4 major decision against Jones. In my personal opinion, if there is anyone that is going to challenge the fantastic season that Goin has had so far, it's Kody Glithero. That being said, he opens up his Saturday morning with the winner of #4 Alex Currie and #5 Hunter May, our death draw of this weight class. I think May will prevail here and even keep up with Glithero, but I don't expect May to make the semis. Another insane quarterfinals match in this weight is Rinehart and Ruhlman, which will be a rematch of their Al Smith semis match, where Rinehart put himself on the map and beat Ruhlman 8-7. I think that Ruhlman will win the rematch, as he has the momentum coming into this match, and will be the guy to face Goin in the finals. I know I just talked up Glithero quite a bit, but regardless, I'm quite confident that Goin will win the title this year; never too confident, but he has put up a fantastic season this year.

    160:

Death Draws: #2 Kade Law vs. #7 AJ Steenbeke

    Top 4: 1.) Goodwin   2.) Law   3.) Conway   4.) Boe

The top 3 wrestlers in this weight class are well distinguished, in my opinion. #4 Landon Boe is right outside the cusp, and could definitely pull an upset here, but I'm not too sure that any of the top 3 are going to lose to anybody besides each other. Now, I did put the lowest ranked of the 3 as the champ here, and let me justify myself. #1 J Conway is a returning champ, and has been dominant all year, with #2 Kade Law giving him his only close battles of the year. We were supposed to get a preview of Law and #3 Cody Goodwin at Al Smith, but Law bumped up for that tournament, where he beat Landon Buchanan to secure the title. Despite the impressive accolades from Conway and Law, however, I think that Goodwin is extremely talented and extremely dangerous, dominating his way through a semi-state field that included #7 AJ Steenbeke, who Goodwin pinned in the first period. Speaking of Steenbeke, he has Law Friday night, so this will be a good gauge of how Goodwin might stack up against Law in the finals. Of course, don't count Steenbeke out; this dude is very unorthodox and can beat anybody if he's on it. Like I said though, the top 3 wrestlers here could all win it, and maybe even Landon Boe if he wrestles out of his mind, but expect very close matches from all of these 4. I would be surprised if any of these matches are decided by more than a point or two.

    170:

Death Draws: #6 Ben Phillips vs. #7 Ryan Cast

    Top 4: 1.) Baumann   2.) Khawaja   3.) Buchanan   4.) Farmer

I think that this is #1 Brody Baumann's weight class to lose. He has been dominant against everybody this season, including #2 Codei Khawaja, who is a nationally ranked wrestler right under Baumann. It's almost certainly going to be these two in the finals, with Baumann likely winning, but Khawaja is obviously very talented, and built up a huge resume of work this off season after being relatively unknown the year before. I think that #5 Landon Buchanan could spoil Khawaja's spot under the lights, but he will have to be on it. Buchanan has most certainly shown that he can hang with the best in the state, losing my a mere point to Kade Law, #3 Brodie Porter, and De'Alcapon Veazy this season. If Buchanan can make that extra push that win these matches, then you might see Baumann and Buchanan Saturday night. On the top quarter bracket, we see an opportunity for a relatively low ranked wrestler to make a push for the semis here, and I think that #9 Aiden Farmer will be the one to claim this last top 4 spot. #3 Brodie Porter's chance to a top 4 spot looks slim after pulling Khawaja Saturday morning, but I think that if Landon Buchanan has a shot to beat Khawaja, then the one that beat Buchanan in the semi-state finals has a shot too. Two more wrestlers that could throw a wrench in this weight class is #6 Ben Phillips and #7 Ryan Cast, who face each other in a death draw Friday night. I'll give Ben Phillips the nod here as he is the returning state placer and higher ranked wrestler, but I don't see him getting past Buchanan this weekend.

    182:

    Death Draws: None?

    Top 4: 1.) Cruz   2.) Buchanan   3.) Veazy   4.) Henry

My opinions about who the best wrestler in this weight class is has changed about 10 times this season. This weight class will be exciting and any of the 4 mentioned here have a decent shot to win the title. #9 Gunner Henry shocked the state when he upset #1 Drake Buchanan at regionals. At that point, I was easily ready to say that #2 Orlando Cruz would win the title. At semi-state, however, Buchanan came back to beat Henry 13-2. I think Buchanan is still the man here, to be quite honest, and Buchanan's last match against Cruz was incredibly dominant, getting a 13-5 major against Cruz in the Al Smith finals. I don't think that Cruz's success should be overlooked, however, as he has wrestled incredibly these past couple weeks, owning a 9-2 win over #4 Jacob Simpson and a TWENTY-THREE to EIGHT win over #6 Jake Sues. You don't just manhandle top 8 guys like that and not be in the conversation for winning a title. That being said, I think that Cruz will pull the upset over Buchanan, but I'm almost as curious to see his semis match against Henry. That match should be a good indicator to how accurate (or inaccurate) my upset prediction is here. Oh, and don't forget about #3 De'Alcapon Veazy. Veazy is the only wrestler in this mix that has seen his name in the national rankings, and has a great body of work already, even as a freshman. Before he got injured at Al Smith, he was losing against Buchanan, and honestly, Buchanan seems to be a man on a mission, so I won't predict the upset here, but I also would not be surprised to see him let it fly this weekend. I expect a clash of talented freshmen for the 3rd and 4th place match, which is a match that happened a couple times during their middle school years as well, so expect fireworks in possibly the most exciting 3rd and 4th place match this weekend. Also, I'd like to explain the question mark at the end of the death draws line. I've been counting the death draws here as any match between two top 8 competitors in the rankings. Gunner Henry is not a top 8 guy per the last set of rankings, which isn't really a ranking error either as he did get upset by Vincent McDonald at their conference tournament, but he has proven to be one of the best at this weight. Unfortunately for him, his first ever match down at the show won't be an easy one, as he sees #5 Hunter Page on the other side of the mat. Page is a returning state placer, and had a one point match with Veazy just this past weekend, so expect a dogfight here.

    195:

Death Draws: #2 John Purdy vs. #8 Jacob Behm

    Top 4: 1.) Sollars   2.) Purdy   3.) Willman   4.) DeMarco

#1 Gabe Sollars and #2 John Purdy is the match everyone wants to see. Purdy pulled the upset early in the year, but Sollars has won every match since against him, and has won these matches pretty convincingly. I'm curious to see if Purdy can make the necessary adjustments to settle the score between the two this weekend. #4 Wyatt Willman has been looking to spoil these rematches for two weekends now, losing by one point to Purdy at regionals, and two points at semi-state. The brackets have favored Willman here and are giving him a realistic shot to spoil the rematch one last time, but first he has to get past #3 Connor Barket in the quarterfinals. I think that Willman pulls the upset here, as he has wrestled Purdy extremely tough, and actually placed higher than Barket in the last state tournament. Barket will be ready though, as he has made light work of pretty much everybody this season, including #6 Will Clark in a first period fall on his way to a 51-0 record coming into this tournament (that's a lot of freaking matches). Purdy won't have an easy road to the finals either, seeing a top 8 opponent Friday night in #8 Jacob Behm. I expect Purdy to win, but he needs to be ready to scrap right away. Sollars is looking to get into the finals relatively smoothly, and is projected to wrestle Clark and #7 Gage DeMarco on Saturday on his way to a second finals appearance.

    220:

Death Draws: #3 Juan Grange vs. #7 Kelton Farmer

    Top 4: 1.) Carroll   2.) Grange   3.) Critchfield   4.) Morrill

You know that you are one of the P4P most dominant wrestlers in the country when the conversation isn't, "Who can beat Christian Carroll," but instead, "Who can survive 6 minutes with Christian Carroll?" #3 Juan Grange certainly couldn't, although he did secure a takedown against Carroll, which is technically the first time he's been taken down in his high school career, but I really shouldn't understate how good Grange is either. Before wrestling Carroll, he had one loss on the season, which was a 3-2 loss to nationally ranked and #1 at HWT Leighton Jones. It really is a testament though to how good Christian Carroll is. Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, Grange and #2 Nathan Critchfield did not end up wrestling each other this year. Additionally, Critchfield has been incredibly dominant this year, all while facing a stacked schedule, and additionally, as a newcomer to the state of Indiana, we can't really make any comparisons here. What this leaves us with is a match that we can't predict very well: will Critchfield bring the #1 220lb wrestler in the country to deep waters, or will Carroll remain a stranger to the end of the 3rd period? We'll get this answer sooner than we thought we would, as this match happens in the semis (damn it, Indiana), while Grange gets a much easier road to the finals. The last spot in the top 4 here goes to #5 Tommy Morrill, who's lone loss is a 7-2 loss to Grange in the Al Smith finals. 7-2 is a little too convincing for me to predict an upset here for Morrill, but he wouldn't be the first Morrill to make a finals appearance if he did. Combine that with the fact that Grange faces a death draw round one against #7 Kelton Farmer, and it becomes a little more likely that Morrill could squeak by to the finals at this weight.

    285:

Death Draws: #2 Hunter Whitenack vs. #8 Nate Johnson

    Top 4: 1.) Johnson   2.) Jones   3.) Whitenack   4.) Hartwell

This weight class opened up a little more this past weekend when #3 Dom Burgett and #4 Brandon Villafuerte were both stopped from punching their tickets. With this weight class becoming a lot more wide open, I'm willing to make a couple bolder predictions than usual, the main one being #5 Jacob Johnson over #1 Leighton Jones. Jones is a nationally ranked heavyweight, but Johnson has gotten extremely close to pulling the upset, losing 1-0 to Jones at regionals. I don't think an upset here is unrealistic, and I think the fact that Johnson is a senior will make that finals match that much more interesting. I see Johnson wrestling #7 Ashton Hartwell, after Hartwell wins a tight one over #10 Marshall Fishback. Another interesting aspect of this bracket is that Jones and #2 Hunter Whitenack are set to meet in the semis. Leighton is the favorite here of course, but Whitenack is a BIG dude, and can capitalize big on scoring opportunities.

That's all I have to say about this year's state tournament. Like I said, I've made some pretty bold predictions in this, but after what we've seen from the state tournament thus far, can we really be surprised if something crazy happens? Our state tournament is messy, but boy does it create some insane matches for us fans.

    3. If they are not sublimated, what company do they get them from?

Aidan Sprague reacted to Thor in Toughest semi state based on rankings ?
Cause Fort Wayne has more small schools. There’s no Warren Centrals or Merrillville up here. And there’s no big wrestling private/parochial schools like a Cathedral or Mater Dei. The Fort Wayne semi state has been held up by mostly smaller schools, outside of Carroll. Doesn’t help that Yorktown has fallen off, and even they are 2A. And while RTCs like the one at Indiana Tech are trying to get a foothold, there’s nothing in the area like a Red Cobra, CIA, Mauer Coughlin, or RWA.

Considering 264M people more live in the USA, you are comparing apples to oranges.  Also considering Italy’s population is 12% older than the USA, and the Covid-19 affects the elderly, again, can’t compare the two.  The media is driving this circus.  And it’s unfortunate.  If we want to compare, we need to adjust for different cohorts and look at it retrospectively.  And adjust for the variation.

More importantly, let’s ban all Walmart’s.  Considering the avg Walmart sees 4K customers a week and many many more over 10k, you are way more likely to encounter COVID-19 at Walmart than at a wrestling meet.  But then again what do I know.  Guess my Biotech background excludes me from knowledge.  Considering everyone is an expert on the internet.

Same exact scenario happened in 2014 with Sawyer Miller and Conner Knapp at FW Semi-State... They wrestled for 3rd/4th the prior year and met in ticket round the next... Unreal draw for these guys as well!

    • 120 will have a minimum of four on-paper upsets, but I’m thinking a couple more.
    • A school who has been doing very well here for multiple years will not get a single state finals qualifier.
    • Two undefeated wrestlers will lose in the ticket round.
    • A BIG upset occurs, one that nobody in this thread has or will predict.
    • I guarantee a #1 ranked wrestler will not qualify for the state finals.
    • I will get a better score on these pick ems than I do New Castle(bolder than it sounds).
