Heck of a career for Ruble but we won’t see him under the lights this time around.  Give credit to Vest for finding the scramble position that worked for him.

Yeah sucks that either he or Lane Gilbert will now have to battle and one will have to wrestle for 7th and the best the other can do is 5th, when both guys are better than 7th in the state. If only there were a solution to this 🤔

Henry took him down 4 times to 1. Probably thought he was better off turning him. Got in a stalemate position for a good while. Probably was committed to the turn after that. Hindsight is 20/20.

Speaking of stalemate position… anyone watch the Cast-Phillips match wanna weigh in on their opinion as to how quick a stalemate was called with Cast trying to get to his butt vs how long they waited/didn’t call one when the situation was reversed and Cast got hit for scissoring the head? (Before things go off the rails as they tend to do here, Phillips was the clear winner of the match and this situation had no real effect on the outcome, just looking for opinions)

State is always wild, and the perfect state bracket is more impossible than a perfect March madness bracket. So I decided to do a coin flip pickem along with my usual pickem. I followed a few rules, because straight up coin flip was way too chaotic. First, I put Seltzer, Mendez, and Carroll into the finals. Those aren't changing. So heads is the top man, tails the bottom man on the bracket. True tossups were a straight one shot coin flip. If I deemed someone as a favorite, than the underdog had to win two coin flips in a row. So say, I get tails for Jackson Ingenito vs Gabe Sollars. The next flip would have to be tails for me to pick Ingenito. Heads would auto put Sollars moving on. And in that specific scenario, I did have Ingenito pulling the upset, and to appease the coin flips rulers, I flipped several more times and continued getting tails. So here are my picks, and honestly feels like a standard chaotic state bracket. Definitely some longshots, but I'm still interested to see how much better this bracket plays out than my actual pickems. Thoughts?

I agree. Rotten draws for sure. You have to question his weight class decision though.

He knows he has to go through Seltzer at New Castle and he could draw him in the semis (which is exactly what happened). And you know 1 of the next 2 best kids in the state are coming in as either a #2 or a #3 depending on the EV Semi-state bracket. Both of which have eliminated him from the state tourney in the previous 2 years.

If it were me, I probably would have dropped to 126 (if he had the ability) to go through Blake Wolf at NC or bump to 138 to go through Bryce Lowery. This opens up the debate on running from someone, but Zeke is 10 points better than him. I'd say Lowery and Wolf would be toss-ups. But maybe, just maybe, he has the fortitude to want to avenge his state loss. I'm pulling for him. He was the most consistent kid in the CIA room. Furious worker.

Ive only spoken to Elijah a couple of times personally, but my nephew was with him at CIA and from what he’s told me and the brief interactions I’ve had with Elijah himself, I feel like he welcomes the challenge.Nevertheless, definitely brutal draws all 4 years.

neutral Buchanan was in complete control...he was not in complete control of the match as he got ridden out a period and turned...I'm not picking Veazy to win, nor am I guaranteeing he will get to this or that match, but destroy and complete control aren't the terms I would use...anything can happen

chris norman valpo vs. josh garza ring a bell to anybody?  Two times in a row if I'm not wrong...Garza was in complete control of the match until Norman chose top

So really he’s not a true frst year wrestler if he wrestled in 7th grade and before!!!

"Senior wrestling for the first time in high school (but did wrestle in 7th grade) to State"  isn't as catchy of a title for the thread.

I mean c’mon guys he hasn’t been on a mat in 5 years, nor was it mentioned in the post how long he had wrestled prior to stopping in 7th grade. Now if he started at like 4 years old, wrestled til 7th while doing high level comps and placing well in that time period it does take a little bit away from it. But nevertheless to take 5 years off from a sport that preaches putting in the work year round, still quite the feat.

Lately, I’ve been stressing as the state tournament series progresses and I will be relieved once state is over. I just want to see the kids I’ve put the time into be successful, but I get 100 times more nervous for them than I ever did myself, and the idea of seeing them disappointed pains me. It’s what makes me not want to coach much after this year because wrestling is emotional as is, and I can’t bear to witness them not get what they want. Is this normal?

Super normal, I just finished coaching a season of 3rd grade basketball. We had a great team, we lost the first game of the year and then won 9 in a row to finish 9-1. We had a bye in the tournament and lost our first game last night by 3 to a team we beat by 16 three weeks ago. I was a wreck all day yesterday and was even worse today, I felt so bad for those boys. After the game I told them if they remember anything from this season it should be that game and that anything is possible and any team (or individual) can overcome any obstacle and prevail at anytime. I think someone said it best earlier, when you lose that passion it’s time to move on. Best of luck this weekend (and hopefully next) to you and your squad.

In 2020, at 120, Jacob Simone of HSE was ranked #4 or 5 (I don't recall exactly) and drew #1 Zeke Seltzer (Who won state) in the ticket round after having lost by 2 to #2 and eventual runner up Carson Eldred from Westfield at Regionals. I believe that Diaz from Wheeler took 3rd that year and he and Simone had split that offseason in two tight matches.

Obviously no way to predict what he would have placed, but worst draw I've ever had dealt to a wrestler in my program for sure.

    Yeah that one was rough

    New Castle Ticket Round Match-Ups

#15 Ashton Brandon (Franklin Central) v. #6 Blake Wolf (East Central)

#6 Tyler Jones (Warren Central) v. #9 Max Naselroad (Alexandria Monroe)

#10 Josh Johnson (Cathedral) v. #14 Griffin Ingalls (Fishers)

#11 Michael Major (Carmel) v. #21 Drew Willis (Roncalli)

#11 Brac Hooper (Zionsville) v. #8 Devin Frazier (Centerville)

#9 Rider Searcy (East Central) v. #12 Zach Wilson (Roncalli)

The whole bottom half of 126 is silly, only 1 non SS ranked wrestler. Gonna be some great matches from a “down” SS (🙄).

Just checked it today. Ben Milius in 02-03 season had 336 takedowns. Chandler Carroll 4x placer phenomenal neutral wrestler and cut just about every kid he wrestled 165 takedowns in 11-12 season... thats insane

Totally misread that and thought you were saying he had 165 TDs in a season he went 11-12, was like HOW?!? Haha

One example of someone predicting someone else to win does not support your argument, weak as it is.  Nor, is any of your drivel necessary.  Just enjoy the result.

At the end of the day Isaac Ruble is a great wrestler, will undoubtedly capture 1 if not 2 titles. Cottey scored big early and did what he needed to do to capture another state title. I’d venture to say that any wrestler in Cottey’s position would’ve wrestled the same. You’re under the lights with a 5-0 lead in the first. You’re gonna wrestle more defensive at that point, you’re gonna be cautious, you’re gonna hang out on the edge, you’re gonna take a stall call or 2. This is state, period. Cottey had proven himself, he’s got his letter signed, but he still had the hunger to win. Call it chippy, call it what you will, I’ll call it good smart wrestling and it brought him a 2nd state title. Not to mention a 2nd state title that he didn’t need to solidify himself as a great wrestler in IHSAA history

  13. 9 minutes ago, FWwrestling1996 said:

I thought Jones could’ve done more to win. He didn’t score offensively and he got 2 points on stalling calls I thought were unnecessary. Let them wrestle it out

Definitely “could’ve” done more, but didn’t have to. Alexander should’ve done more. Jones wrestled his match, continued upper body action trying to work in his trips off his ties. Alexander got up early and tried to kick it in cruise control. They can only wrestle it out if there’s 2 guys trying to actually wrestle.
