The Zionsville Wrestling Program is excited to announce that Doug Welch will take over as head coach. The native of Newburgh, IN was the IHSAA State champion at 152lbs. in 2011, IHSAA State Runner-up in 2010, and 5th at the IHSAA State finals as a sophomore for Castle High School. He continued his career at Purdue University where he was an NCAA Qualifier and ranked as high as 9th in the country at 157lbs. While competing for the Boilermakers, Coach Welch won the team's Boiler Up Tough Award, was an academic all-Big Ten selection, and was Purdue's male recipient of the Big Ten Outstanding Sportsmanship Award. We are excited to have a talented young coach like Doug Welch that will eat, sleep, and breathe Zionsville Wrestling for years to come and do things the right way. Congrats Doug and welcome aboard!

I agree with you.  I think we get close on the top 10 and I think the system likely places the top 4-6 well.  After that there will always be arguments about the system or where the cut line should be.  From the standpoint of parity within a class, it is nice that there are teams from 15-25 that could still be competitive with teams who make the top 12.

I do think Rumph would have been the champ.  Glad to see he will be wrestling #7 Cole Matthews of PA for Indiana's Dream Team.  Based on Rumph's weight, looks like he could have gone 132 for the Dream Team and faced #2 Real Woods of Il.

I got to say this system is a lot more fairer than the IHSAA the previous team state system.   What about the old system when you had two top teams in the same regional,  then a top team in the state doesn't make it to the dual meet.   For example,  you  had Brownsburg and Avon in the same regional this year.  Since Brownsburg won the regional,  Avon would have been out?  You have top teams   At least this system puts in the best teams into the competition and it also puts the competition at a time that its not competing against the individual state tournament at the same time.    Now were arguing about whose 11th and 12th and most likely these last two team wont be much of a factor in the championship.   I don't care how you slice it,  there's always going to be a last guy out.

guys it is what it is.  Madison beat South Dearborn this year with two of our starters out of the lineup and we didn't make the cut.  This isn't a perfect system but its the best that we can do until the IHSAA grants extra weigh ins (which from what I hear will never happen) or the IHSAA reinstates team state.  My team has been on the cusp of making team state for several years and it sucks but in the end is our goal to get every team that deserves to be at state there (which I will say we typically can count that our top 10 teams in each class make the cut) or is it to find out the very best team in each class?

They just missed the vote-in process. Sadly, they forfeited a weight and had 4 guys not make it out of one of the thinner sectionals in the state. If they'd had one more guy make it to regional or had a warm body in that forfeited weight, they would have been in the vote-in discussion. It's true they beat Rochester head-to-head but remember scoring is heavily weighted toward returning guys and CA had 3 of their top guys graduate--meaning they bring back 10 compared to 14 starters from Rochester (I'm just speaking in terms of how scoring works...CA's incoming class could make them a force but that's not part of the scoring process.)
They would have been an amazing candidate, sadly, with all the credentials they've got coming in for next year. They'll be very good for the next few years it seems. We just don't have a fair way to consider incoming 8th graders, move-ins, etc. before the voting process, so you've got to get that far at least first.

Kellar wrestled 106 last year for Ohio and took 5th as a freshman.  He just wrestled 106+5 at FloNationals, my guess is 113 for next year for him.
Jesse TF and majored him in there only 2 matches.

I'm pretty new to using this site, but it seems the following might be helpful.
    Question to ask yourself:
Is what I'm about to post something I would like feedback from the community on/ information for the whole community or am I making a personal attack/ asking an individual a question?
1st type: Starting or commenting in a thread is the place for you.
2nd type: Try using the message feature.... There is a feature on this site that allows users to sent a 'personal message'.  You just click on the person and then choose- the little envelope icon. It's easy

(PS- This is a test.  If you pass, I'll get the hate mail in my inbox if you don't appreciate help with manners.  If you fail you'll post your message here.  Good luck.)

Yeah, Joe made the joke that these were completed prior to this last weekend. He said good thing they locked them in cause Indiana studs were about to knock off a few. Way to call it Joe and I agree about Mills and Rumph.
On a side note: they have Joe Lee listed at 2 but also has him as "out". I would assume that had he wrestled high school this year, he'd be #1.

That’s one reason I would like to see Escobedo push the AD to put up some funding to add one more high quality assistant to the staff.  If IU could get in one more solid technician, especially one with decent name recognition that could really help boost the development in the room and help with future recruiting.

Most top Big 10 schools have two top assistants that are recognizable names and then some some additional coaches after than.  That’s not even mentioning the RTC coaching advantage some programs have.  But IU only has really budgeted out for one main assistant coaches with some additional positions.  And Im not even sure if that one top assistant position pays as well as most of Big10, to help attract a top candidate.  It’s hard to Even get to the middle of Big10 when your schools only budgets to put together the support staff equal to a mid-level MAC team.   Sure it’s possible, but it’s a huge mountain to climb and a heck of a lot of work that usually ends up driving the quality assistants to another program.

To get more stud recruits interested a program first has to prove it can develop talent and provide a solid room of practice partners.   The best way I can see to improve that area that is add another high quality coach so more time can be give to the wrestlers.   Not to mention the help that additional top assistant could give in recruiting, networking with HS coaches, and developing the fan base.
