  1. The idea of rotating weight, blind draw or vote for the most exciting weight are all good ideas. LIKE WRESTLEBACKS! Not trying to start a new thread here b/c I should probably be doing that in the 'Friday night death draw' posts, but if we place the top 8, not just the top 2 then wrestlebacks are essential. Best argument I have seen for this is in comparing to other individual sports like track/swimming where there are heats and multiple athletes move on. In wrestling you can't compete against more than one other person at a time. Sorry for the rant- point is good ideas need some pushing or they never happen. I'll vote for the 195 lb match as this years match to watch for. Should have some wrestlers with a scoring mentality (I've got it at Davison v. Tonte). I'd put 138 as close second (i've got Black in the Finals v.???; but Black is entertaining no matter what).
  2. I'd bet the IHSAA includes any date from the first official practice date until the state tournament is over. It's just cut and dry that way. So from a governing body that would be the likely stance. The question still ends up being 'enforcement'. Just like the comments about transfer students (see Bautista Slam? post). The IHSAA invariably has rules like this in place to protect kids. The transfer rule is designed to protect kids from getting 'recruited' to wrestle for another program making them pawns for coaches trying to build some dynasty. The Sunday rule is designed to protect kids time for other activities etc.... I've used the word 'designed' because the intent of the rule is in the kids interest. But much like any policy there are always exceptions where the rule has a negative or unintended consequence. So- with respect to the Sunday rules, this seems to be one of those 'exceptions'. I am sure almost every wrestler there on Sunday was there because they wanted to be (not out of some compulsion or coach coercoin) and that coaches were there giving of their 'free time' to support the kid.
  3. This may be a matter of semantics, but I don't think it matters that much who you have "in your corner" on Friday night. It DOES matter who you've had in your room ALL SEASON. The staff for each of these successful coaches and how they use them is equally important too. So I'd change the question to If you could send your kid to wrestle in any room in the state, where would it be?
  4. As I read through the list, this seems to be the sticking point. Am I correct? The other questions seem to basically involve extra practice sessions or lessons and this tournament is not hosted by a school. Nothing prohibits the wrestlers themselves from attending this competition-right? So is the issue who can coach them matside? Are these wrestlers even considered to be 'in-season' if they are not still in the State Tournament series?
  5. I think both sides of this 'disagreement' about whether this is a 'good post' or not; or if it belongs in this forum or another one have some credibility. Everything on these forums represent someone's OPINION. Feel free not to 'click' and open it if you think it doesn't belong here.... I will say at least it is talking about positive attributes of wrestlers. Noticing someone's potential does not take away from the accomplishments of others.
  6. I'll say 7 from EC with all but 285 coming out of Da Region: Triana, DLP, Reitz, Black, Davison2, McWilliams. I also think the following EC SS wrestlers make the finals: Crary, Lemley, Fattore, Pokorney. And I'm hoping for Hatch, but he'll have to be lights-out in the semi's against Lee.
  7. 106- Braden Curtis over Drake Campbell 113- Asia Garcia over Hunter Watts 120- Tylor Triana over Caden Rooks 126- Michael DeLaPena over Graham Rooks 132- Jeremiah Reitz over Dawson Combset 138- Brendan Black over Zach Melloh 145- Brayton Lee over Jason Crary 152- Joe Lee over Kenny Kern 160- Brad Lauhlin over Diego Lemley 170- Elijah Stock over Zack Fattore 182- Lucas Davison over Thomas Dull 195- Andrew Davison over Tristan Tonte 220- Mason Paris over Eli Pokorney 285- Isaiah McWilliams over Wade Ripple
  8. Here is the trackwrestling link to the breakdown of numbers @ each tournament: North- http://www.trackwrestling.com/opentournaments/VerifyPassword.jsp?tournamentId=256514009 South- http://www.trackwrestling.com/opentournaments/VerifyPassword.jsp?tournamentId=256516009 As stated above, there was a significant imbalance in participation 278:128. The North had all but 1 weight class with 12+ wrestlers with 220 having only 9. In the South, only 4 weight classes had more than 10 kids. Regardless- a great opportunity for those young guys to keep going. I applaud the efforts taken to get this going!
  9. DLP is peaking at the right time. He is on the top of his game and looked great in the Semi's. Cummings would have been 2nd with a different bracket draw...
  10. My vote for EC SS would have to be Michael DeLaPena. Knocking off Cummings 8-3 in the semi's. Plus, he dominated every other match. Very aggressive and fun to watch. Peaking at the right time I'd say. (Obviously there were some other great performances @ EC, so feel free to throw out some others , DLP just gets my pick).
  11. Not at all, lots of great wrestlers ended their season this past weekend (and some before). Simply looking at schools who did not bring as many members of the team to the SS, but got a large percentage of their guys through/ placed high as a team with fewer participants. And in the case of both Chesterton and Hobart a large percentage in the finals/Champions.
  12. Congratulations to Chesterton and Hobart for an amazing performance @ EC SS. Chesterton won the Semi-State Team Title earning 6 spots at Bankers life (all 6 made the finals with 4 Champions)!!! 6/9 for a 67% qualifier rate. Hobart finished 3rd in the team contest with 4/7 advancing and 3/7 in the finals with 2 Champions. Shout out to Kankakee Valley, Rensselaer Central, and Wawasee for top 10 finishes with less than 6 wrestlers in the game. Some of the big number schools still did well, notably Portage qualifying 8/14 for Indy. Crown Point got 4/11 through, Penn 4/12 and Merrillville 3/12. Harrison WL brought 10 with only 1 moving on. Any other strong performances by schools who brought less that 10 wrestlers to their respective SS??? #QualityNotQuantity
  13. The 106 pounders from the Logan Reg. made the "token 6" happen with 3 getting through. Nice job by the light weights. The middle weights did not really come through with Fair getting pinned 1st round and a 51 win Krintz ending up 51-1 after round one. The rest of your predictions were right on the money.
  14. I had an interesting seat between both Penn fans and Bautista supporters. Clearly each had different takes on the slam calls. Penn fans obviously agreed with the calls on the mat, but others seemed to think Demein was basically flopping...making the slam look worse by going limp on the mat return. Any non-partisan observers have an opinion on this match?
  15. Well done! No matter what the venue, the wrestling is great. I'll take a poor sound system any day to the "intimate" feel of the Merrillville gym (since intimate usually meant sitting crammed together like sardines). It was so nice to be able to get up and come back to find my seat was still available. Parking situation was great and everyone was very friendly. Thanks for all the effort to make this tournament run smoothly!
  16. I was really just stirring the pot . However, it would depend on how many went to the bank from a 32 man bracket. If it was the top 8, I think Da Region benefits. Weight classes would vary, but on the average I'd wager 5 from Da Region and 3 from FW.
  17. Unconfirmed, but looks like the 220 4th place from Rochester Regional is out. (injury)
  18. Would we combine the brackets? More qualifiers from Da Region that way...
  19. I agree. Plus a fast pin is usually more of a discrepancy in talent. Now- Bo Nickal v. Sammy Brooks ending that fast in a pin is interesting to me.
  20. Since Baker is in the same 1/4 of the bracket as Laughlin @ 160, that seems like an unlikely inclusion...
  21. Would've made a great Friday night match. The place would have been packed!
  22. Manzona Bryant had a 6 sec. pin @ team state. http://s300.trackwrestling.com/tw/teamtournaments/WrestlerMatchSummary.jsp?TIM=1486579304874&twSessionId=fvaxqnmemyfwfgk&participantId=246584010
