Again don't blame the athlete blame the governing body that said he followed the rules.

He is only doing what he is allowed to do because the state association won't allow him to Wrestle with the males due to what's on the birth certificate.

Blaming the athlete for a poorly written and executed rule doesn't solve anything.

And maybe Im biased in that I have transgender family members and I would hope that doing something that has been considered "passe" for so long they could just live their life and do what they love.

This particular individual loves to Wrestle we as a community should welcome and encourage it. Could the rules be clearer or perhaps modified to handle this situation better absolutely but again please don't put the onus of this issue on the athlete.

    A couple thoughts.

1st -  He. His name is Mack, referring to him as she or her or worst of all "s/he" is just disrespectful.

2nd - I'm not sure it really matters whether or not he officially put in a petition to wrestle with the boys or not. He has stated he would rather wrestle with the boys but there is a rule against it. He is following the rules as they are written. The issue should be with the rule not with the kid that is following them.

3rd - It is not the place of a state athletic asocciation to decide what medication is "medically necessary", and it is definitely not the place for somebody on a message board to decide.  There are a lot of reasons that people choose to transition, but none of them have anything to do with wanting to win a girls state title. To say that he shouldn't be allowed to compete because he is taking hormone therapy, which is prescribed by a doctor, is insane. Forcing a transgender athlete to choose between living in a body that fits their mind or competeing in a sport they love is just plain cruel.

4th - I have a feeling texas will be taking a look at their rules after all of this and I hope that other states with similar rules do the same.  These rules need to be changed.

I'm sure the buzz around Monrovia right now will help get some more wrestlers out for the program.
Many small schools have clubs and have had clubs for MANY years.

Simply starting a club doesn't magically make great wrestlers.

Who are some wrestlers that are low ranked or unranked that really impressed you in this post season? I know Gee from Shenandoah is on that list. He wrestled out of his mind at semi-state

Since no one is coming to the defense of Austin Bethel, it looks like I will...

1st point- The injury time was due to a medical condition that Austin has struggled with for 4 years. It is a huge accomplishment that he has been able to continue to compete when after his freshman year it was thought he would never wrestle again. The injury stoppage was MY call to check on the health of MY wrestler. I will not comment any further due to confidentiality.

2nd point- We used ALL of our injury time so that we would not stop the match again. If we had to stop again, we would have defaulted the match. We, Mt. Vernon, do not win that way. We do not break rules or take dives to win matches.

3rd point- The two stoppages AFTER the injury time were due to blood time. That is not on myself or Austin. The official saw it and HAS to stop the match to tend to the blood issue. If anyone watched Ripple's match with Henson, we were on the unfortunate end of that blood time...and we are not complaining about that nor would we be had we lost.

4th point- As to the remarks on his conditioning...I invite you to come watch our running, swimming, and live sessions and ask you to see who goes the hardest, the longest. Austin is in great shape and many don't see that due to his style of getting pins early in matches. For the record, he had Cooper pretty close to pinned (if not pinned) 3 times in the first period. Had that call happened, like it should have, this post would not exist.

Lastly- Neither Austin, the ref, or myself broke any rules during this match. It gets under MY skin that anyone would take a shot at a kid like this. This senior deserved his chance to finish the match even if it was on one leg. We are proud of Austin and all of his accomplishments. He became the FIRST wrestler in our school's history to qualify for state 4 times! That is what I will take away from this weekend and that is worthy of praise, not criticism.

Congrats Austin & Wade!! You guys make MV proud!!

    Y2,
I respectfully ask that this post be haulted before it takes any turns for the worse. I know people are entitled to their opinion, but I think this week leading up to the state finals should positively focused on the kids.

    106: Curtis, Abbott, West, Evens
(The semis match of West and Abbott will be exciting and whoever wins between Evens and Tinsman will qualify)

    113: Todd, Robinson, Winans, Smith
(I believe Todd and Robinson are the class of 113 but just have much tougher schedules)

    120: Stephenson, Tinsman, Schliessman, Thomas
(Won't be too many exciting matches here, I believe everything will kind of fall in to place as is with Schliessman having some exciting wrestle back matches)

    126: Curtis, Blackburn, Hale, Lloyd
(The matches to watch here is the semis match of Blackburn and Hale and the 3v6 matchup of Willen and Lloyd)

    132: Hunt, Schliessman, McCammon, Meiring
(Schliessman and Hunt will cruise to the finals with McCammon, Meiring, and Muzzarielli fighting it out for 3rd-5th)

    138: Heistand, Cooper, Jones, Love
(Exciting semis match with Jones vs. Cooper here but I think there is a strong top 4 in this weight)

    145: Barr, Prescott, Young, Richardson
(By far the pest weight class.  I love the 4v5 matchup with the winner giving Barr a match and the semis rematch of Prescott vs. Leonard will be exciting)

    152: Rutter, Torbush, Green, Prybylla
(Very excited for the semi finals matchup of Torbush vs. Green and will be excited to see who squeaks out the 4th spot here)

    160: Laughlin, Bell, Huser, Wills
(The West Point commit is by far the class here but the semis matchup of Bell vs. Huser is very exciting as well, with the loser most likely getting 3rd)

    170: Hayden, Pease, Jiminez, Duncan
(Strong top 2 here which should make for a good finals and Jiminez, Duncan, and Hicks will fight it out for 3rd-5th)

    182: Gray, Sanchez, Richards, Calvert
(Gray will run away with it but 2nd-4th is up in the air)

    195: Watson, Maxwell, Alley, Sofronko
(Maxwell, Watson, and Alley are a strong top 3 and either of them could win it on Saturday but the winner of Sofronko and Minton should qualify as well)

    220: Maddox, Parsons, Campbell, Ice
(Maddox will handle this class with Parsons most likely seeing him in the finals but Campbell, Ice, Finchum, and Bell will fight for 3rd and 4th)

    285: Dunn, Rhoades, Shaffer, Swallow
(Very solid weight class here with an exciting championship match of Dunn and Rhoades but Shaffer, Swallow, and Brown could all qualify)
