Nothing wrong with having a dream, no matter how far-fetched it may be.

In 92 Lawrence North had a first, second, third, and fourth in semi-state and all won state titles! I would think that has never been done before or since.

I love it when some parent complains about the "Big Shot" from Ohio.  I let them go on awhile and then I say, "Are you aware that he offciiated at the Olympics?"  Normally that shuts them up, but I did have one person say, "Well, he should stay at the Olympics."  I have never had anyone say it, but I think a good comeback to my Olympics question would be...."What did he officiate.......curling?"

Wrestling is short lived. CG school academics is much better then Perry Township. Think about getting in college and doing well. They did you favor.

There has been no tougher weight class at the Mooresville Regional than 220 the past 3 years and now again this year.

    2014 - All 4 Qualify for State
Connor Tolley - Franklin Community - 3rd at State
    Gunnar Larson - Avon

    2015 - 3 Qualify for State
Gunnar Larson - Avon - 5th at State
    Clayton Scroggs - Martinsville
    Kasha' Wilder - Ben Davis

    2016 - 3 Qualiy for State
Gunnar Larson - Avon - 2nd at State
Clayton Scroggs - Martinsville - 5th at State
Dristin McCubbins - Monrovia - 8th at State

    * Tristin Choate from Mt. Vernon Posey qualified in 2015 and 2016. No other wrestler from the 3 other Regions that feed Evansville SS have qualified.

    2017 State Rankings
    Gunnar Larson - Avon - 2
    Clayton Scroggs - Martinsville - 3
    Reilly Peterson - Brownsburg - 8
    Garrison Lee - Monrovia - 11
    Many Cheam - Franklin Community - 10
    * 4 of these 5 have a strong chance of moving on to SS. That is real scary for the other 3 Regions at 220.

I had a mom come out on the mat at Folkstyle State a few years ago at Ben Davis. I think her child was in the Novice age group. Her child lost on a takedown just prior to the buzzer. She came out on the mat pointed at me and yelled "F-you! F-you! F-you!" except she did not abbreviate the F.

The ISWA Security Officer came over to the mat and said "I heard her but now I don't see her." I informed him she was the nice lady standing behind the scorer's table giving us the finger.

He escorted her to the front door and she let him know what she thought of him too. This was on Saturday and he told her if she set foot on the property within the next 48 hours she was going to jail for trespassing.

I would rather deal with some of the more excitable high school coaches in the state than crazy parents. I know what to expect from the coaches. I have no idea what the parents are going to do.

Does wrestling teach life lessons? Absolutely? Does participating in another sport, speech/debate, drama, journalism/yearbook, etc. teach life lessons? Absolutely. All i'm saying is each individual is different and if they choose to stop wrestling it's their choice. Should a coach try and retain them, yes. Should a coach pressure them into something they don't want to do? Nope.

Seems as you have walked the walk personally and also have had a son walk away. That kinda makes you an expert and I can respect that. In no way is a kid that walks away "weak". Are they worse off?.... depends on the kid I guess. If a kid has another path in mind and the guidance at home that he needs to make a wise choice, then by all means maybe you let go a little sooner and allow them to go without too much effort to retain them.

The topic was "what to say to a kid". After all of this input, I think the best answer is this... it depends on the kid. But as coaches we should lay it out there and give each kid options, if they need them. I guess my advice was simply... do not live with regrets. That's the way I live my life now and, it is pretty good.

Wrong... There is no right or wrong to this debate. I could go on and on of why I think that wrestlers are tougher than other athletes (mentally and physically), but what it really comes down to is opinion. I do think the other athletes can do cool stuff (that is why I watch and have played those sports too). But.. my point is that it takes a special kid to stick with wrestling and to endure what it takes to excel in our sport. You may believe that other athletes are just as tough. I personally do not. Right or wrong.... just my opinion.

And yes 92... I can respect your opinion. You typically have good stuff to say.

If they don't have a passion for it, let 'em go. I wrestled from 5th - 12th, but I never took it terribly seriously. Yeah, I worked hard during the season, but baseball was my true love so I didn't do any club wrestling or wrestling specific work outside of fall/winter because of that.  Wrestling, for me, was something to keep me busy and in shape during my offseason. I just happened to enjoy it enough to stick with it.

If they enjoy it enough to stick with it, great. But if they don't enjoy it enough to the point they want to quit, let them go and enjoy their youth.

This whole "helping them prepare for life" is kind of a cop out. You know what else helps these kids prepare for life? Calculus, Chemistry, Biology, Accounting, etc.

If I had it to do over again, I would have worked a lot harder in high school and college instead of being as focused on sports, girls, and parties.

I've told our kids to follow their dreams and to pour their hearts into something THEY enjoy, not the parents and/or coaches. While I agree wrestling teaches many life lessons that will be valuable moving forward, pushing someone to participate in something they don't enjoy is pointless.

Angel vs jaggers iirc they were 60-0 vs 58-0 and the announcer eve said never again might two wrestlers with 2 sparkling records meet again in the finals...Mac Taylor was 221-8 and at the time held the national record...there are at least 3 guys from nc with 200 wins and 6 with 180+ but none won a title..all were greats but couldn't get that state championship...Bubba Dickerson is the last nc wrestler to win a title and it still shocks me..between mullins, taylor, campbell and Jaggers that still baffles me..there are 4 runner ups and 3 thirds among them..and all placed 3 or more times

Who cares if they made a thread..good for these wrestlers...it makes me laugh that you took time to put this thread down...if it's a waste of time then why are wasting time posting in this thread..this is a wrestling site so idk what your deal is...most parent, coaches and wrestlers wouldn't take time to talk smack either..you're entitled to your opinion but 102-9 is pretty damn impressive...I guess being proud is wrong now...

If I'm reading between the lines correctly, he means that Drew is at a weight where most underclassmen and certainly true freshmen do not come in and see a lot of success.  The lighter weights, while still no joke, have more underclassmen that realize success.
