Why are we comparing ourselves to Kentucky? If we want a real gauge we need to beat the best from Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania, etc.

Coach Litherland reacted to redcobra in Quick Frosh-Soph state tourney qualifiers and the finals poll
Many thanks to all of the volunteers, wrestlers, ref's, and venues so far ... the State Tournament is fully imported and ready to go.
The event is set for a 7:30 Doors Open a week from Saturday. As it wasn't a pre-registration open event, but instead a Qualifier, the entry fees are pay at the door. When you pay you will receive a Weigh-In Card which you can take straight to the scales. Six mats in the main Southport Fieldhouse will have scales. Any scale will do ... pick the shortest line. Weigh-in's will absolutely close at 9:30. Wrestling starts at 10. At weigh-in's you will be wearing a Singlet and Shoes (about 1.5 pounds) and receive an additional 2 pound allowance ... i.e.., 126 is now 130. If you are 130.1 you will be bumped up for no fee on the spot. if you are 124 or lower (120 plus 4), you may bump down. Your Separation Criteria will follow you.
Separation Criteria (seeding) will be implemented when building brackets.
Level 1 -- State Qualifiers (winners Friday night will be removed) ... and congratulations on your success.
Level 2 -- Quarter Final SS
Level 3 -- SSQ
Level 4 -- Qualifier Champs
Level 5 -- Qualifier Runner-ups
etc.......
Please check your level in the tourney and make me aware of any issues. markdurham@mac.com
I have offered this to the coaches association for sanctioning ... I hope they will continue to consider. It's up to all of you to make it successful. These kids deserve it.
Many thanks to the folks at Southport, Tell City and Portage for stepping up to Host.

Coach Litherland reacted to trackgopher in Indiana Frosh-Soph North Qualifier
I want to thank everyone for attending this year's Indiana Frosh-Soph North Qualifier. It was a VERY long day, but we made it through and learned a lot of what needs to happen for next year. I want to open up the floor for anyone else to give suggestions of things we could work on for moving into next year.
Some things that I know we will look at:
More Mats/Having 5 actual mats More Officials (asked for 7 for 5 mats, but only got our 5). Though thankfully we had a parent of one of our wrestlers that holds an IHSAA officials license that took his time out to break those officials for lunch/breaks. (If staying with only 5 mats) Moving 3 to one set of bleachers and 2 in front of the other so we can keep the floor clear on the spectator side. I only know of a few problems with that. Moving weigh in time a little bit/Moving wrestling time. Better Trackwrestling Admin (suggestion from Y2) We also have a survey that I ask anyone who had a bad experience from the venue to please contact me (PM me here preferably) regarding it, so that I can accurately assist in making the event better for everyone.
Hopefully everyone enjoyed their day, while it was a late day I think it was highly successful.

I'll ask the tournament director, I'm assuming the 106 class so wrestler would have to make 110.

I personally think a chance at weighing out is Easier than going a whole night trying to make weight Sunday morning. I like it

Coach Litherland reacted to legger in Cradle
I agree about Nick Walpole having killer cradles.
If I recall right during his senior year he was going for his third state championship.
A sophomore Andrew Howe beat him in the semi finals on his way to his first state championship.
Andrew choose neutral in the second period in respect to Nick's cradle skills.

Decatur Central late 80s mid 90s...but I'm gonna say the best cross-face cradle either goes to Nick Walpole or Sampson Cook...Cook wasn't very good on his feet, but the kid could cradle anyone...I remember seeing him down in alot of matches by 8-10 points, & he would choose top in the 3rd lock up his cradle & win by fall...

Coach Litherland reacted to MattM in Frosh/Soph State (2nd chance state)
First year for both Fresh/Soph State and Girls State. So we will have to wait an see on that question. For year one it seemed like Girls State went well. Hopefully Fresh/Soph STate is a successful event. The more mat time the better.

Coach Litherland reacted to awood2 in Side Officials
In the north land we are very blessed that the assistant referee is used often and calls ARE reversed on occasion. Yesterday, the assistants called locked hands and the conversations (when necessary) seemed to be a genuine exchange.
As far as video review... I agree with the need for such protocol at the pro/Olympic level, not at high school. The statement I heard and like to repeat - why don't you just tape the match on Saturday, send the tape to the IHSAA and they will announce the winner in the paper on Monday. These guys work hard at what they do. The are evaluated and vetted by the IHSAA. I am sure that they are all calling each other today to review tough situations and ask for feedback from former officials and colleagues that they trust. I can't speak about the ones you hire for dual meets, but the ones you saw yesterday take it very seriously and will seek constructive criticism.
Most importantly, if they screw up there is always a gym full of 'home schooled' referees that will help make them aware of the need for a career change. One wise official once told me in the locker room, pre-meet convo, "There are 4 paid officials here today. Once the first whistle blows there will be thousands of them in attendance."

I guess the sum of throwing headgear, taking straps off on the mat, and kicking the coaches chair wasn't enough to warrant a DQ.

Coach Litherland reacted to Y2CJ41 in Indiana's Most Dominant Big Man, EVER?
2013 Middle School state
1st Place Match: Evan Ellis (Greentown WC) over Gunnar Larson (avon wrestling club) (Dec 6-2)
It seems that state when they were both sophomores was the only time Larson has beaten Ellis from the data I have found. That includes about seven total matches. Misleading no one, he said that Gunnar would have been a two time champ without Parris. I showed him that it was no guarantee. It's always Avon vs. the World, keep up that attitude it really does great for the Orioles.

Idk about career but one year of dominance goes to Chad Ruggeri from Mt.Vernon hands down.
Absolutely demolished everyone.
