Today was Brownsburg 5th running of our youth ISWA tournament.  This has grown far more than we ever thought when we took the initial plunge to host our first youth tournament 5years ago.  We've taken some risks over the years but hope it has helped bring strength to local Indiana wrestling opportunities and competition.  We'd like to express a couple thanks to those that have helped us build this tournament.  First, thank you Red Cobra wrestling for sponsoring our tournament these past three years, its been a blessing having your support and influence. Secondly thank you contenders wrestling for your annual support in sending a large contingent of wrestlers, very impressive talent and numbers every year.  Special thanks to Jim LittleJohn in assembling an excellent officiating crew every year, these guys have a long day on Saturday at sectionals then make the trek up to Bburg on Sunday, you guys are awesome.  Finally, I'd like to express thanks to Mark Durham for volunteering his time to mentor and coach me every year in the ways of trackwrestling, Indiana wrestling is fortunate to have his skills.
Thank you parents and teams that have travelled from all over the state today to compete here at the burg; especially great seeing representation from the far north and south corners of the state with the Region, Evansville, Madison, and some ft wayne kids; also Terra Haute looks to have a good thing going, was impressed with the talent I saw out of the Terra Haute teams today, that area may field some tough high school teams in the future.

Will we ever hear the results of the "Freestyle 21"? I'm guessing if they all did attend the 2 qualifier mandate it will be shouted from the rooftops...but if even 1 slipped thru, we will have nothing but crickets and it will be "move along, nothing to see here." And I'm not calling out any kid or demanding names and not asking for a J'ville lynching...just a "yes there was an oversight"...or "you all are idiots, everybody followed the rules" and move on.

I guess I miss seeing BigDan or almost anybody ripping anybody. It's just a matter of fairness and "above board-ness".  The questions raised seemed to be able to be answered by a simple Yes/No etc but instead it does appear to be deflection and calling out those raising questions/issues. If the anti-qualifiers are "bashing volunteers and kids" by asking pointed questions of rules application, then the "pro-qualifiers" are doing the same by shouting "whiners and complainers" to those raising issues/concerns.  Acceptance is the 1st step to recovery as someone said on page 2-3 of this book. FS numbers and depth are down..let's admit it and proceed on.

Agree with ClanCampbell...it's like the political process. There is middle ground, it doesn't have to be winner/loser, right/wrong.

I was at state as well. I did not voice my concerns/opinions as I did not know that was the venue to do so. I would have loved to have seen an invite to a town hall type gathering of the volunteers and constituents to hash things out. I figured they were busy running the event so I did not try to corner anybody. That would be one suggestion/idea for improvement for JMill and MattyB...there are 2 events that don't have to be a board meeting scenario but more a state of the ISWA gathering where it is already convenient for constituents because they are already there! I agree that it would be very beneficial to put faces to names, but it works in reverse too...I wouldn't know many of the volunteers if they came up and bashed me in the face for being a whiner/complainer. Approachability might lessen the keyboard warrior and empower them to come out from behind the screen, much like less bashing might occur to the volunteer who comes out from behind the Wizard of Oz like curtain. I am sure everyone involved and volunteering is in it for the right reason and great guys, just like those of us asking questions and raising concerns are also ok people and not chronic whiners/complainers/trolls.

Off tangent..MattyB provides a great offseason topic thread idea....Name that IndianaMat Poster! Since this is the InterWebs and anonymity is taboo (sarcasm) maybe we come up with a random 20 handle poster names and submit who we think they are...winner gets a cool IndyMat hat or something. I'll start....Fabio is actually former Pacer center Rik Schmidts..he's just trolling us with that size thing.

    mattyb,
Agreed, weekday pseudo tournaments might just be a way to spark more life into IN freestyle, and I like the approach to having each section sanction several of these a year within their section.  But I think its wrong to legitimize them as a qualifier at this late juncture, I think you made a similar comment earlier in this thread.  Personally my stance is that all the best should be at the state tournament, heck my own son was knocked out of schoolboy duals last year by a "waiver" kid, but it was the right thing to have that kid at the tournament.  How the ISWA went about getting him and all the other best back into the tournament certainly compromised their image, but those wrestlers belonged on that stage; as they do this year as well.

Now we have a couple clubs claiming altruistic motives, yet placing the ISWA in yet another difficult predicament that compromises their image.  Should those with the facilities and strategic connections be given the special benefit to secretly qualify their kids on a weekday and compete elsewhere on the weekend, isn't that kinda what this is implying?  Perhaps we lose our vision and are spoiled when we have facilities and resources like Avon&Brownsburg, but I grew up in a farm community in basketball country and try to keep things like this in perspective.  The appearance of contrived tournaments, exclusivity, and collusion isn't a good approach to improving and strengthening the situation when trying to hold all to a set standard.  Seems they, ISWA, would be better served just to lift the two tournament rule than this stuff.

I'm sure you'll be weighing my boys in for the Franklin tournament over at Avon's satellite weigh-ins in a couple days, would welcome a face to face talk on this topic further, I'm sure the county can come up with some good creative, fair solutions to pose.

Seems we've heard now that mostly no wrestler in attendance to the mystery tournament actually needed it for qualification.  Considering how much heartburn that said tournament seems to have caused across the state, I'd think that the directors for those clubs would then consider not treating the tournament as a qualifier.  For the sake of strengthening the continuity and integrity of the sport and ISWA, I would think said directors would take the high road, recognize the heartburn they've created, and "waive" the consideration of this mystery tournament as a qualifier.  So, along coach Hull's line of discussion, its in the hands of the three clubs to do the right thing.  Seems like nothing to lose, so why take a stand on having the mystery tournament count as a qualifier?  problem solved, at least regarding the perceived foul play many of us have.

Kudos for pulling together so many kids on a weeknight and having what sounds like a great night of wrestling, sounds like it made the kids better, which seems to be your real intent here, not skirting the rules.

#TheCounty with a strong showing. We had 23 in the finals with 13 champs (kids that live in #TheCounty). Had several other champs that train in #TheCounty but don't live here. Nice to live in a place where wrestling gets top billing. Big things happening at the Avon Wrestling Club, Brownsburg Wrestling Club, Plainfield Wrestling Club, Tri-West Wrestling Club, Cascade Wrestling Club, Contenders Wrestling Academy, and Red Cobra Wrestling Academy (all within 10 miles). These kids have quality rooms to workout in every night. They are putting in the work and it is paying off.

My wife and son went to the entry doors get some fresh air between his semi-final and final match.  They returned 5 minutes later, when asked whats up, she said they couldn't make it past the cloud of smoke and he didn't feel much like taking his wrestling shoes off to walk out into rain past all the smoke.  When we left and walked past all the butts, I literally commented to my wife "wow, I thought this was a tobacco free campus, this is embarrassing."  It'll be a shame if ISWA has to hire additional security just to enforce a no smoking policy, but that may be what it'll have to come down too.  So when entry fees need to be raised to offset this additional security, a lot of us will understand why and support it.

These parents are spending thousands of dollars a year on travel expenses to out of state and Indy tournaments, academy and/or club membership fees, private coaching lessons, etc. for their kid to compete at a high level...why not have the same parents pay $20 entry fee to the local club (that is hosting the freestyle qualifier tournament they are missing) as a donation as a condition of exemption for the ISWA team kids.
This would lessen the host club burden and the team parents burden of schedule conflicts.
Win-Win again for the time v/s money issue.

The ISWA board members, coaches, parents, volunteers, family...we all witness the blood, sweat and tears poured into this sport.
Who doesn't  support our youth wrestlers?
Why make any top tier youth wrestler that qualifies for an ISWA team, choose between the tournament they just qualified or a mandatory local F/S G/R tournament?
No special treatment for any one kid.
One criteria: Any kid that makes any ISWA dual team, they have an exemption for that weekend since they are wrestling for the state team.
Any complaints? Well show up and make a team and you will get an exemption.
    Win-Win.

Make sure your are not forcing an Indiana Team member to pick and choose tournaments.

This is a perfect solution.  We aren't asking for a waiver or exemption bc we are doing something other then wrestling.  As I said before we were prepared to skip FloNationals to wrestle at Penn's freestyle tournament, but now there is not a freestyle tournament offered anywhere in Indiana that weekend. Penn moving their tournament to april 30th is going to hurt their attendance bc all the region kids that would have wrestled in it will be going to Hanover's freestyle tournament.

GrecoCoach stated that me bringing this up is getting old, but I don't think I am doing enough.  My son has worked his butt off to make these ISWA dual teams as well as prepare himself for USA Nationals and Ohio TOC.  My kid loves to wrestle and because he wrestles every weekend he will not be able to compete at freestyle state, it just doesn't make sense.  He doesn't play baseball or football he wrestles and these next few weeks are some of the best wrestling weekends in the nation and I will not sacrifice him getting these amazing opportunities just to qualify for state.  I feel bad for him because now he won't be able to represent Indiana in the schoolboy duals, but I don't see any other way to get the qualifiers in. So please ISWA board members look into helping the kids that are wrestling every weekend get an exemption into your state tournament.

I remember coming into the wrestling room after cross country season and puking for the first week.  I always found it very hard to transition from CC to wrestling condition, just my own personal experience.  Now I found leaving the wrestling room and going out and running down a runway with a pole during track season came very easy.  Reverse of the question posed, wrestling seemed to help tremendously with pole vaulting.  It got me a college scholarship with very little actual work on the track; I even hated it all through college, would much rather have been wrestling back then, but it helped pay the bills.
