We will learn a lot more about Joseph's chances Friday night. And I am excited to say I will learn it in person.

    Thanks.

I'm pretty excited. I've never been to Carver Hawkeye Arena or anything else really comparable, I am guessing. I have been to a bunch of IHSAA championships (which always rocks, but never more so than 2016) and college duals at smaller Big 10 programs like UofI and Northwestern, but nothing like an arena like this for a 1v2 dual between two very heated rivals. Even my wife is excited about going.

My only disappointment is that I just read on Flo that Murin is hurt. Lee will get Carter Happel instead apparently. I like the idea of steel sharpens steel better.

Don't say it out loud for fear you make it come true.

One of the things I hated, hated, hated about last year was how the Big 10 handled Mikey Carr's seed. Even though he didn't wrestle Nick Lee or Joey McKenna he still got the top seed. Then he got blitzed at Big 10s and NCAAs. I can only guess he was dealing with some sort of injury and I empathize with that, but the seeding seemed wrong to me. And after seeing that example another coach might be tempted to "manage" the situation with or without injury.

For the past several weeks Flo has posted their best guess at the Dan Hodge Trophy rankings. The criteria for the Hodge is:

A wrestler's record Number of pins Dominance on the mat Past credentials Quality of competition Sportsmanship/Citizenship Heart
Flo only considers undefeated wrestlers. They use pin % rather absolute number of pins. They create a dominance score that includes things like average time on the mat. Past credentials include prior NCAA placement and other things. Quality of comp is pretty straight forward. they make no attempt to determine sportsmanship/citizenship  or heart.

The notable thing about this week is that there are 2 Indiana boys on their list for the first time I can remember. Nick Lee moves up to 8 from 9 last week. And Mason Parris takes his bow at 11.

At least two guys above Parris will be eliminated in the coming weeks as Joseph (4) battles Marinelli (5) Friday. And Pletcher (7) battles Lee (8) in a few weeks.

One more thought to try to illuminate what I've been arguing for: if Sasso had beaten only Lugo before a new rankings, wouldn't that automatically have pushed Lee to #2 and Sasso to #3 because it would have been a neat and tidy Lewallen over Lee over Sasso over Lugo over O'Connor with a random DQ in the mix?

If we'd had #2 Lee and #3 Sasso in place before Sasso-Lee II, how does Lee losing to Sasso drop him to #4 or #6 when he's still got the win over Sasso in his pocket? It wouldn't have. He'd have dropped only to #3 almost certainly. But because he started out at #4 or #5 and both Sasso wins happened in a rankings period, they overthought things compared to how rankings logic usually works.

Lee puts on an absolute clinic against Red. 9-1 and it wasn't that close.

Lee hits an outside single in the first and rides out the period.

In the second Red starts on top. Lee gets to his feet and Red takes a stall after not returning to the mat. On the re-start Lee gets the quick escape to preserve riding time. They end the period in neutral.

In the third Lee hits another quick single and does a great imitation of a back pack. With riding time locked and a 6-0 lead Lee works a bit for the turn before finally cutting Red to try for the major. And he gets it pretty quick as Red looks a bit gassed. They end the match on the mat with Lee still riding.

    Wow, wow, wow.

Flowrestling's mid-season awards article posted today.

Their Coach of the Year pick? Tony Ersland, Purdue. They had this to say:

While things like the Hodge and Freshman of the Year are a little easier in March because we have the final NCAA results, something like Coach of the Year is a little less straightforward. There are several ways to look at it, from giving it to the coach of the title team to a guy earning it for an unexpected team trophy or first national champ, as well as factoring in dual performance and how a program improves throughout the year.

There's no question Tom Brands would be a justified choice if Iowa wins its first national title in a decade, and on the other side if Penn State overcomes their bevy of injuries Cael Sanderson could be a wise choice. Wisconsin's first team trophy since 2010 would likely get Chris Bono some discussion and likely be the result of Tristan Moran going from preseason #11 to high All-American, plus a Seth Gross national title after transferring in.

But right now I'm looking at some other coaches in the Big Ten in Tony Ersland of Purdue and Matt Storniolo of Northwestern. Right now Ersland has the edge there due to the Boilermakers' 21-13 win over the Wildcats in Evanston, though Sebastian Rivera and Yahya Thomas both missed that dual. Purdue started the year unranked and is up to #10 in our tournament rankings, while Northwestern went up from 16th to 8th.

Similarly Virginia Tech has climbed from 18th to start the year to #11 now, and that's without the services of NCAA champ Mekhi Lewis while also suffering season ending injuries to Korbin Myers and Brent Moore. They're second in our dual rankings and begin their ACC schedule this Friday against North Carolina.
We should also mention Mark Manning after Nebraska won CKLV and Chris Ayres taking Princeton from 15th in the preseason to #8 right now. Coach of the Year is also tricky because it singles out the head coach for something that also includes the work of his assistants and the accomplishments of their athletes.
While Sanderson and Brands are tremendous coaches, I'm more partial to the somewhat backhanded description of "most with the least," and to this point in January that is Ersland. He's taken Devin Schroder from 12 to 6, Kendall Coleman from unranked to sixth, Dylan Lydy up eight spots to #4, and Christian Brunner jumping five spots up to fifth.
Finalists: Tony Ersland, Matt Storniolo, Tony Robie
