You can't have your cake and eat it too. LOL On one side you use the number of kids in the room and the total number of boys to choose from as a factor that limits fairness and provides an express advantage to large schools (hard to argue there) But on the flip side when it comes to evaluating the state results you are willing to discount the fact that the coach gets to choose from 50+ kids to put the best 14 out there. It's difficult for me to see how a 1A team (which may have a 1/10 of the wrestlers and student population) should get the same number of kids qualifying at state as a 3A school, and you could make the argument that would be horribly unfair if it did turn out that way.

How about this....how about we spend empty time arguing endlessly every year on a messageboard behind screen names while Cox and the gang is swimming in our money and nothing gets done??

Oh wait, we do that, every year for about the last 15.

And their large schools field smaller teams -- ones again indicating that class wrestling helps small schools and hurts large ones. Pretty much status quo.

You have a bit of a sample size issue when you are comparing 50 schools to 201 and 20 schools to 89, so I'm not sure the "full forfeit difference" is quite as telling as one might think at first look. And looking at the numbers a bit closer you will see the following:

    IN-OH FF difference
small schools -- IN has 1.23 more FF/school
large schools -- OH has .77 more FF/school

    IN-KS FF difference
small schools -- IN has .91 more FF/school
large schools -- KS has .77 more FF/school

    IN-MI FF difference
small schools -- IN has .93 more FF/school
large schools -- MI has 1.39 more FF/school

So, the largest discrepancy is actually between IN and MI large schools. And -- if we take the average of the comparison's between IN and the 3 other states we see that IN has on average 1.02 more FF in the small schools than the other three states, and the other 3 states have on average .98 more FF in the larger schools. Really not as much discrepancy as one might think. Seems like more evidence of just shifting the problem from small schools to large one's. That doesn't seem like much of a solution to me.

I think what several are arguing is that class wrestling will not increase nor decrease the total number of available student athletes at a small school - that number is fixed regardless of the class decision.  So the goal is to have a larger percentage of those students go out for athletics, specifically wrestling.

Y2's solution to the issue is to increase success of the small school wrestlers by giving them their own class to wrestle within.  As the school observes familiar faces winning "small school" sectionals/regionals/semistate/state, it would encourage other kids not participating in sports to want to be a part of that winning tradition.

Others are implying that to get more of that fixed pool of students out for wrestling, other ideas might be more feasible such as a change in uniforms, more exciting dual meets, less time burden on weekends, and encouragement of multiple sport participation.

I'm not saying #2 and #3 are untrue. What I am saying is that they don't answer the question I asked. While they are both very good arguments for how class wrestling can help smaller schools, they don't answer, "Why do Kansas and Ohio (and now also Michigan) have LESS participation in wrestling at large schools than Indiana?" That is the question that I am interested in.

If school size is the biggest factor, shouldn't the largest school in the State forever (Carmel) produce the most champions?  Are they an EXTREME anomaly too?  Could it be that they focus on sports other than wrestling?

Carmel hasn't had a state champ for almost 20 years.  Carmel is far from the only huge school with dismal wrestling success compared to their size.

Teams already pay an entrance fee. Most teams already have to raise funds for their own programs. They shouldn't have to raise money for the hosting of an event.

The program is going to be shockingly good for the foreseeable future... Most of the kids on the team have been wrestling since they started wearing diapers... I remember attending ISWA events when I was in high school and seeing these kids run around on the mat with a bottle in their mouths... It's nice to see their dedication pay off!

I could not agree more.  Back when I was coaching hs, I coached over 1,000 kids.  Not one of those boys ever ended up being an NCAA folkstyle champ.  Not one of those boys ever even was a DI all-american.  However, the vast majority of the kids I coached walked away from wrestling loving the sport.  You do not have to be an elite wrestler to get something pretty valuable from wrestling all the styles of wrestling.

This is what hundreds of people said when this "RULE" first came about. They were told "This will help local tourneys." "This will increase participation." "This will help Indiana and USA wrestling grow in the international styles." and that was the end of the story. Either follow the rule or you wouldn't wrestle at state...

Then a day before registration closes they tell everyone their "RULE" isn't a "RULE".

It's the most hypocritical thing I think I have ever witnessed in my entire life. This didn't just effect a few people... It effected every single kid who wrestles in this state and it's not right.

By all means I agree they should let everyone wrestle that wants to wrestle; BUT you can't make an April Fools joke out of a "RULE".

Could you imagine the backlash if the government turned around and said healthcare wasn't really mandated this whole time. They just said it was mandatory but in reality you could have just waited until 2 days before the deadline and signed a piece of paper to save you thousands of dollars a year?
