This is a very classy and humble post by Mr. Whitehead. To me, his voice is as identifiable with Indiana HS wrestling as Tom Carnegie's was to the Indy 500 ("It's a new track record!") or Jerry Baker's to Indiana high school basketball. Forty-two years is a tremendous accomplishment and certainly something to hang your hat on. Safe travels, good health, and good luck to all wrestlers, their families, and coaches this weekend.

Palmer in action here from 1984 Oklahoma v. Oklahoma State dual meet. His match begins right at the 1 hour and 45 minute mark. Not the greatest video quality as compared to nowadays, but decent enough.

Alan Grammer from Evansville Reitz is perhaps worth a mention as well. A DII national champ in '85 and '86 for SIU-Edwardsville, he also placed 3rd and 5th respectively in those two years in the DI tourney. He lost to Jim Jordan from Wisconsin in the '85 semis and Jordan went on to win the title at 134 that year and also repeated in '86. This basically amounts to ten pounds of air as I had no first-hand experience seeing him either, but I heard from several people in the Evansville area at the time that he was "scary." I recall hearing too that his four state finals matches on the way to his '98 title lasted less than a combined five or six minutes, but I'm not sure if that's fact. If the link works, here's a picture of him from back in the day. Needless to say, a specimen. I can only speculate that Christian Carroll might be a good current comparison? I believe he's now a member of the Tulsa PD, or at least was as of just a few years ago. Great topic and it certainly speaks to the amount of talent that both Marion County and EMD have produced over this period. If only a dual meet like this could happen... I'm curious though, does anyone know what level of talent Mater Dei has coming up in the pipeline? Their '21 and '22 classes were obviously strong, but is my sense correct - I live in Ohio - that they'll be down a bit over the next year or two, at least by their normal standards? I'm sure they'll send out a formidable lineup in any case though.

I'm not certain on the powder blue singlets. If I have my calendar years right, the night of the 2003 finals was a pretty bad winter ice/snow storm and I didn't get to attend. I actually started the trek over to Indy from Dayton that afternoon to see the finals, but then had to turn back around before it really got bad. Mother Nature... Sure would liked to have watched MD's run of four in a row that night though, in addition to the Pribble match. I can only imagine that he would have had a lot of the crowd behind him being from such a small school. As for what he's doing now, assuming this website is current, he's a chiropractor in Bloomington. Nice bio of him here. I'll add in this name, although the unexpected part is more about his actual high school. Ryan Pribble '03 from Turkey Run HS, which is now closed. My memory is admittedly a bit hazy for that far back now and he may well have been favored at 140 that year, but I'm guessing Turkey Run might be the smallest Indiana HS to claim a state champion in wrestling, at least in the modern area. I seem to recall as well that he beat Darren "The Damage" Elkins in the semis, but I could be entirely in error on that. It wouldn't be a first.

Southern Side, or to anyone else who might have thoughts. Is there someone in the field you think might be capable of pushing Carroll? Critchfield perhaps? Honest question and no sarcasm intended at all. Living in Ohio, I haven't been able to get back to the West Side to see MD compete, whether at the Holiday Classic or in post-season for the past year or two. I'm curious as to whether Critchfield is the clear-cut #2 at 220 and just how good he is. By photos and his IHPO interview clip, his build reminds me of Macartney Parkinson. It sure sounds like Carroll is on another level though.

Blake and Dane Maurer from EMD. Blake of course was a 4X, but Dane also placed third at 195 in 2012. As memory serves, he wrestled his freshman year - not sure whether he got any varsity time though - and then concentrated on football his sophomore and junior years. Came back his senior year and ran the table that season up until the state-semis and ultimately took home third. Someone can correct me if I'm off on details here, but I think I'm basically over target.

Thanks much, 937. I brain-cramped on the timeline, but I do recall now that was the timeline last year. I always look forward to the release as the folks who put it together really do a terrific job with the magazine. Certainly hope the Indiana entries do well in the Super 32 and that all Indiana kids across the state have a great and healthy season as the regular season gets underway here soon. Kind regards!

I'm curious if anyone might have some insight, and be at liberty to share, on MD's projected lineup by weight this season. Specifically, where do Boots and Critchfield slot between 195 and 220, assuming Ralph is back at HWT? Or is Sollars going 195? Hunter May at 145 or 152, if in fact he did transfer in from FC as I think I read in an earlier thread? Also, on a secondary topic, any word on when the IndianaMat season preview magazine comes out? Apologies if I missed it mentioned somewhere else.
