The national title contenders Mejia, Blubaugh, and Streck all won easily in the first session today. Sadly, Jose Diaz was in a pigtail and already went 0-2.

Indianapolis has two alive (including Blubaugh) in the Round of 16 and two alive in the consolations.

Wrestling resumes at 6pm Eastern and is free to view on the NCAA.com website by going to the "Live Video" list (not viewable on demand, though, sadly)

Burge and Cervantes won in the first session. Langeman, Herrera, and Layman are alive in the consolations.

Wabash has 3 in the Round of 16, 2 alive in the consolations, and 1 eliminated. Langeman is Trine's only participant.

Hey there everyone! Pardon the 3rd person description, I just wanted to give you a heads up that I will be covering the USA Wrestling Olympic Trials at Penn State.

I'm briefly stepping out of retirement to attend the Trials as an approved media member and I wanted to give folks an opportunity to suggest/request questions I can ask the athletes participating, particularly those with Indiana ties. I haven't done this in the past, but what the heck!

I'll have more information and articles to come, but please feel free to shoot me question ideas, even if they are ridiculous

Thank you and I look forward to sharing this journey with anyone interested.

While these other guys sure are entertaining and keep us on our toes I'm sticking with my original nomination for this first round and honoring those who had or have continued to bring a wealth of Indiana Wrestling knowledge and history this this board.  As Team Garcia said @grecoref and @TheAncientElder deserve a ton of credit in that department.  Plus, @hook and half continues to be a wealth of historical information for one of Indiana's best programs and the competition they faced.  I'll cast my vote for the entertainment portion of the crowd next year, as you guys really liven up this place way more than I do.

RAJR reacted to maligned in Who will be our 2.3 annual D1 AAs and 11.3 annual smaller-division AAs this year?
Across the last 10 actually wrestled D1 tournaments we've gotten 23 All-Americans.  And we've seen 113 All-Americans from the last 10 actually wrestled D2, D3, NAIA, NJCAA tournaments.

    That's 2.3 D1 and 11.3 smaller-division All-Americans per year.

Who get these men's spots for us this year?

I follow D1 much more than the others, so it's the one I know. Trying to see things objectively, I think only 2 AAs is the most likely scenario this year.

How I'd categorize our Indiana high school grads' AA chances:

    Likely:
Mendez--He is in an always-deep 141, but he would need to lose a couple of significant upsets not to medal. He's one of 2 (maybe 3) clear gold medal contenders.
Davison--Heavyweight, contrary to high school, tends to be fairly predictable with obvious tiers. Davison seems headed for about a #6 seed, and him winning above his seed or losing below his seed outside of about 3 to 8 is unlikely.

    Small chance:
Allred--His ranking suggests he's in about the same position he was last year heading into Big 10s, where he emerged not only as an AA threat, but also a dark horse to take the whole thing. However, we haven't seen the same scoring savvy that he showed last year in any of his matches against top competition this year. He's got a great shot to win a couple NCAA matches again, but he'll need to rekindle some things we haven't seen yet this year to make an AA run.
B-Lee--I love how hard this dude has worked to get back and to be ready to bang headed into Big 10s. He's capable of some interesting moments again. Sadly, though, he will need to rediscover one or two more helpings of that past prowess to make a run.
G-Rooks--He's come agonizingly close before, so I wouldn't count him out. Like last year, he needs a workable draw, and he needs to get hot. It's not probable--but not impossible. He's got a really similar mix of results to last year, and he seems headed for a similar seed.

    Notable others:
DJ Washington--Not sure why he's struggled so much for a sustained period now, but I would have had him in the "small chance" category for sure early this season. He doesn't look like himself at all right now, so it's hard to imagine much post-season impact from him unless he recovers from whatever is ailing him very quickly.
Blake Boarman--Breakout year for Blake. He seems headed for an NCAA bid with a sparkling record of 17-4. But he wrestles a lesser schedule, so it's hard to get a handle on how much he might be able to do against top guys. I'm excited to follow him at SoCon's and beyond.
Gabe Sollars--Super fun pin artist that's had a couple tight ones with AA contenders. He hasn't quite broken through against the upper tier; but if he manages to get into the tournament, he could make some noise.
Brody Baumann--He's another one that needs to sneak into the tournament first, but that shows flashes of creating interesting upsets.
Evan Bates--He's solid. He beats who he should, but loses fairly clearly against the top 30. Getting into the tournament, which he could very likely do, would be a good result for him.
Connor Barket--Big strides forward, but he'll need a special performance at the ACC tournament to get into NCAAs.
Brodie Porter--Same as Barket...big strides, but likely a year or two away from big noise.
Nick Wilham--Admirable job jumping in at 285, but would also need a huge conference tournament.

As the Indiana high school wrestling season comes to an end…Just wanted to give a big shout out to all of the Indiana clubs and coaches. First generation wrestling family here. My boys were introduced to the sport by their uncle/cousin. Such a great sport and community! We have met so many great people and competitors. Blessed to have such a great community and support system. The boys have had club coaches from all over the state help in their corner multiple times w/ no ties to the boys whatsoever. Just there to support Indiana wrestling. Another big shout out to contenders and red cobra. Both have been home clubs w/ outstanding coaches and partners!! This forum and the wrestling community is outstanding.

As logical as this sounds I would hate for a referee to be on the hook to determine if the athlete is injured during action. That seems like a lawsuit waiting to happen and refs have enough to deal with.

RAJR reacted to Coach Peck in Injury times are out of control
Every year for the last fifty (that is about my length of recollection) people always gripe about misuse of injury time.  I think that sometimes injury time is abused, but there is nothing to be done about that except maybe scoring one point any time an injury time is taken when the Official determines a score is imminent.  Other than that I fear we begin to penalize a kid who is injured and that should not happen.  I thinik most coaches, if they wil admit it, have had a kid who faked it to get a rest.  I remember once back in the early eighties when my guy was wretling in the Regional and in the middle of a flurry he began to scream.  The Official stopped the action, and I quickly moved to him.  I told him to lie still and asked him where he was injured,.  He looked up and said, "I'm not injured coach I just need a break."  I wanted to kill him, ir was embarassing eventhough no one knew.  I told him to lay there until I helped him up.  I got him up and had him walk around, and then he went back to wrestling.  The "break" did not help as he got beat fairly soundly.  THe next week at praxctice I made him run each day.  He asked why and I told him it he needed a break during the match he must not be in shape.  There may have been others, but nearly as blatant.

I've always felt open tournament results suggest D2-D3-NAIA all-americans are roughly D1 starter level and D2-D3-NAIA champs are D1 national qualifier level.

Using those comparisons, 13 of 14 from 2016 were good enough and stuck with college wrestling to the point of being D1 starter-caliber or better. That's shocking. Reaching that level, even after a good high school career, requires a LOT going right personally and athletically. Amazing group.

Against the integrity of the rule and the sport, in my humble opinion.  Being tired is not an injury and it takes away the advantage of the wrestler who has put in the work to keep up the pace for the entire match.  I understand this is taking advantage of the way the rule is written, however if you believe it should include getting out of a not so favorable situation or taking a breather because you’re tired, we have a different definition of what an “injury” is.
