backtothemat got a reaction from awood2 in Robert Faulkens at the Fort Wayne Coaches and Officials Meeting
Y2:
I saw a lot of FF's over the weekend at The Castle Invitational. Our 138 and 132 and two matches in 5 duals. Those are usually filled weights. And we all know the story with 106 and 285. What about not letting FF's count in a match maximum limit?

For my money, the greatest dual meet in Indiana history. It's hard to explain how unbeatable Mater Dei was at that time. They hadn't lost from the time the team tournament was introduced in 1995-96 and didn't end up losing until 2004--finishing at 9 titles in a row, including the last of the current IHSAA team champion system in 1994-95. In this dual, Hobart had already wrestled far over their heads when DeBusk takes it to another level by tossing and sticking the virtually invincible Jankowski, whose only previous loss all year was by 1 point to the national champ Rosbottom of Jeffersonville. The place was pandemonium. Then Hurst pins a very good Dewig too and we could all barely breathe. Nick Miller comes up with a clutch win over Cantu, and then all heck breaks loose. Nick Benzce has no business even being in the match with Unfried--he'd just gotten pinned in under a minute by him the week before. But he wrestles the match of his life and is up a couple points late. At that point, there are lots of versions of what exactly happened, but the bottom line is this: Benzce is dancing around with the best stalling effort he can muster and the EMD section is going insane. It's so loud you can't hear yourself think in what shockingly turned out to be an undersized Center Grove venue for this gigantic match. It's so loud, Benzce doesn't hear the ref screaming at him that he's being called for stalling. And again. And again. Before it's all said and done, there are a few seconds left, and Unfried is up a point without Benzce even having realized and Unfried is able to run out the clock. From there, King controls Weber and Alvey and Hisch get enormous pins and the EMD faithful are crying tears of joy while Hobart and anyone not from EMD can't believe what we just saw.
For me, it's the greatest match ever because there has only ever been that type of aura of invincibility surrounding a team in a dual meet situation with EMD. Prior to 1995, there was no team state, and no one has come close to matching their sort of run. It would have been clearly the greatest upset, even until now, in Indiana dual meet history. And the fact that it came that close to happening, in those circumstances, made it truly legendary.

Wow. The 4th and 5th seeds at that weight are tough as NAILS!!! You'd be awfully hard pressed to find a tougher weight at any regular season individual tourney.

SHHHHHHHH! Coach Welch and The Chad both think that CHS is Castle High School.
We told them that CHS was renovated since they left and when they drove here from Lafayette, we had them blindfolded and drove them around for 4 hours so they thought they were back in Paradise.

Good stuff! Thanks for having Kyle. If you haven't had time to spend with Coach McCormack, let me tell you he is one of the nicest guys you will ever meet. If you have a chance to make anything he offers in the off season from camps to meets I would highly recommend to take advantage of it! He works great with wrestlers and brings in great technicians.

backtothemat reacted to Coach McCormick in Hoosier Hustle Finishes 2nd in PA
The Hoosier Hustle All-Star team went 4-1 yesterday at the Columbus Day Duals in York, PA.
* HH picked up a nice win in round 1 of pool play against perennial powerhouse Team Nauman White - PA
* HH then disposed of Team Northeast (NY/NJ) and The Edge (NJ) in rounds 2 and 3
* HH won an exciting dual over a very well coached KT Kidz out of Connecticut in the semi-finals
* HH fell to A&B Core (NJ) in the finals in a very good dual.
This was an extremely fun and rewarding group of wrestlers to be around all weekend. We had numerous honor students on this squad as well as 3 young men who are U.S. Service Academy candidates for next year (Army and Navy). These 3 young men had congressional interviews in Indianapolis on Saturday and then had to make their way to York, PA in the whee hours of the morning to participate on Sunday. Simply put... this group of wrestlers was a class act from top to bottom. In addition to wrestling with grit and determination, they always displayed great sportsmanship... both in victory and defeat.
Of our 15 wrestlers (from 8 different clubs/schools) we had 9 of them represented with parents at the event. Great group of parents and awfully kind of them to make the 8-9 hour trip to support their wrestler and the team. Thank you for safely transporting the team as well.
I want to thank all of the club and high school coaches and parents who I corresponded with over the past 6 weeks in filling this competitive squad.
Thank you to Coach O'Brien, Coach Janney and Coach Smith for all of your efforts with the team this weekend. It takes a lot of coordination to get 15 kids, from all over IN/OH, to an event 8 hours away; and pull off a successful effort. These guys volunteered their time and expertise for the team and the kids this weekend. They all offered positive leadership and coaching to the wrestlers at all times.

backtothemat reacted to teammills in Sept. 25 -- YWC -- 9 - 12th grade Camp -- Featuring Coach Kevin Ward -- Army West Point
What a great camp to attend on a Sunday during the preseason with so many of the top wrestlers in the state participating. Coach Ward was great guy with solid technique and left a very positive impression on my son. He's building a program and doing it with several of Indiana's top kids. Coach McCormick also had some great insight for the wrestlers and parents that hung around. It's easy to see why Yorktown has had such an impressive run under his tenure. Thanks to all those coaches who continue to allow our state to get exposure to these D1 programs.

backtothemat reacted to Darrick Snyder in IHPO Quality! Any Thoughts?
I personally have several complaints about this tournament:
1.) It is 2.5 hours from Brownsburg. Next year I propose it is held at Brownsburg. Others will set up, clean up, and run the tournament, but we will rent our gyms out for the tournament.
2.) Most of my wrestlers lost matches.
3.) School started at 7:50AM today, and I am tired.
4.) Wiesjahn had coffee breath...again.
I will add more complaints as I remember them.

5.) Not enough hashtags were used yesterday.

Thanks to Joe and his crew for a great tournament.
Great to see multiple ISWA board members come up after the meeting. Also... nice to see ISWA board member Pat Culp up there helping to make this tournament a great success. Pat set up the night prior, went to the meeting in Indy, and came all the way back to help more. Pat doesn't get enough credit for what she does.
