As many of you know, I have been in the corner for many Lefever matches. I made the trip to Lacrosse to witness history. It is a surreal feeling seeing Riley accomplish this feat that very few at any level have every achieved.

The Lefever family came into my life about 10 years ago when the twins came to a camp at Garrett. Since then I have traveled all over the country to coach and watch these kids wrestle. Just to type that I am proud of these three guys doesn't do them justice. They are extreme competitors on the mat, but as Gregg Doyel stated, when they step on the mat they flip the switch. These three are the types of kids you'd want your daughter to marry. It starts with great parents and a great support system at home. Congrats not only to the Lefever family, but the Wabash family, the Carroll Charger family, but even beyond that the Indiana wrestling family. This is something as wrestling fans that we can be immensely proud of.

Thanks for the great ride Lefevers, the stories, the trips, the fun times will always be something I cherish. I thank you guys for letting me be a part of the process and trusting me with your sons. It was a great ride and these are the types of people that make coaching so worthwhile.

As  you all know Riley is pretty good at wrestling.  But I have to tell you all of something i witnessed after the the event was over that tells more about this MAN!!.  After the event was over and the parents, coaches, & team were all celebrating with the 3rd Place team trophy at a near by restaurant.  I walked back to where I had been sitting with my youngest son Easton (Owen's brother).  As i approach the table, here is Easton (age 10) and Riley in a full conversation.  What other 4X NCAA champ sits with a 10 year old after he just made NCAA Wrestling history and talks about how Easton has been doing in his matches and asking how proud he was of his older brother being an All-American?  This man is truly one of a kind not only on the mat but in his everyday life.  Every event that we had went to this year to watch Owen and the Wabash team, Easton was in constant wrestling mode with one of the Lefever boys, wrestling around and fending for his life.  It is a year that Easton or the whole Doster family will never forget.  Wabash wrestling is about academics & team!!  Wabash was the best decision our son made and the state of Indiana has a GEM in Wabash College.  #WAF #onevision

If you include private schools (like St. Vincent's), you get a few more because of the Lutheran schools. However, if we are discussing public schools, the only middle school program for Fort Wayne Community Schools is Blackhawk. That program was only started because Mike Ester was passionate about the product he was helping produce at Snider. Say what you will about Ester, but wherever he goes, teams tend to win (Snider, Trine, Indiana Tech). Since his departure from Snider, the school and the conference have been on a decline.

Personally, I don't think the SAC is going to invite Carroll and Homestead any time soon for wrestling. This year, Carroll would have placed wayyy out front with Homestead a distant second, followed by Dwenger in 3rd (based on tournament results i.e. Concordia Invite, New Haven Invite, Mooresville Holiday Classic, IHSAA Regional).

As a head coach, I have learned that this sport takes a lot of time, energy and commitment. I know that most sports do but I think wrestling is unique because we have a smaller number of families, individuals and leaders to draw upon to help organize things. As a result, the few leaders in the area may get burned out and invest the minimum time necessary to run a successful PROGRAM but don't have the extra time and energy to help develop a COUNTY.

Potential solution: The head coaches in the area form meaningful relationships, put aside our egos and use our resources collectively so that all wrestlers in the area can rise together. Believe me, I am just as much to blame as the next guy. I want Homestead to win championships so most of my time and energy is devoted there. However, I love this sport and how it helps develop young men and it would mean a lot to me to see Fort Wayne wrestling back on the map.

SpartanGrappling reacted to Kookie953 in Class Wrestling - Participation
I am totally new, and therefore totally unqualified and I haven't participated in previous discussions / debates...but if the argument is that class wrestling would increase participation that would seem to be totally illogical.

Of any sport that I have seen, you either love to wrestle or you don't.  I really don't think expecting a "successful state run" will matter much to a 14-18 year old kid making a choice to wrestle.

And of any sport there is...wrestling is the ultimate meritocracy.  It does not matter where you are from...if you can beat the guy in front of you then you advance.  Just the incredibly long list of schools participating in the state finals...and the fact that small schools can have multiples more participants than the behemoth high schools (or some 5A and 6A football schools having ZERO participants in the state finals) proves this fact.

Any statistics that would seem to show a correlation between class wrestling and an increase in participation would be a study in false equivalency in my opinion.

Rumph is electric on his feet. If he can develop a good ride/tilt/turn, he will have an impact at the next level. It will be interesting to see the result of the match if it doesn't last 18 minutes. That definitely affects the pace and overall mindset of a wrestler. I am hoping we get to see this one under the lights in a few weeks.

New Haven has some solid individuals but like a lot of teams in the area, they lack strength across all weights. Carroll has 6 sectional champs and 4 runner-up, New Haven has 5 champs and 0 runner-up. It will be hard for anyone to keep pace with Carroll as the tournament progresses. But that's why we wrestle it out, anything can happen in sports.

How about this group of teams meets once a month from March through September and we each bring our top 5 kids and rotate the school where we meet (IHSAA rules permitting) and see what we can do to strengthen our regional / semi-state?

SpartanGrappling got a reaction from Coach Masters in This bracket can not be right
According to the sectional seed meeting tutorial (http://www.ihsaa.net/seedingmeetingtutorial/story.html)...

"A coaches' failure to have his official team scorebook and his weigh-in sheets shall result in his school's entries being unseeded unless a majority of the other coaches present wish to seed the offending school's wrestlers."

If this rule was followed, the other coaches would have been in a position to protect their wrestlers and avoid the possibility of wrestling a highly seeded wrestler who became "unseeded".

Either way, our state's governing body cares little for its coaches and athletes. I won't be surprised by any rulings going forward, some of this stuff seems made up on the spot. It's like one of those wheels you spin for a punishment/dare. "Ohhhh, you landed on "All wrestlers unseeded", sorry about your luck. At least you didn't land on "Termination of wrestling program".

I understand why rules exist and I follow them about 99.9% of the time. However, life happens and as humans we should recognize that unique circumstances may call for slight variations in interpretation and execution.

Red has nothing to prove, you are right.

However when you accept an invitation to a prestigious event you make a commitment to also make the weight. The committee paid for his hotel, a FLIGHT, meals, event activities, and gear for him to wrestle. In total he probably received around $750 in perks to wrestle. Then when you show up 9lbs over weight and don't attempt to make it there is a big issue. To compound it we as a state were there and it made not only Red look bad, but our whole state. It was NOT a fun conversation with the committee, nor was it in my itinerary for the weekend. To put it rather bluntly it was an extremely embarrassing situation to be a part of and there is no other way to put it.

132: Consolation 1st Round - Drake Rhodes (Homestead) vs. Jack Tolin (Chesterton)

First, let me disclose, I am Drake's coach. The purpose of this post is not to stir the pot or call out a referee. Personally, I would just like to discuss the position and see if I am missing something. Tolin is a great wrestler, he took us down in overtime and I am not taking anything away from him.

    Here is the link: http://s500.trackwrestling.com/tw/VideoPlayer.jsp?TIM=1456150243381&twSessionId=bgpjgulmnikbnpt&matchId=3990354104

I believe you will need the subscription/pass code to view it. You can fast forward to about the 6:30-6:35 mark of the video.

The match ended 6-5 with Rhodes as the winner. The Chesterton coach approached the table and then the head ref consulted with the assistant ref. After the consultation, they awarded Tolin with 1 pt for the escape making it 6-6 and sending it to OT. Then, I approached the table to ask for an explanation. He told me they already consulted and the decision was made. That's fine, I understand that, I was just wondering what you discussed that changed the call. He said that Rhodes lost control. I asked how that was possible if we were still locked in the crotch and the wrestler's head was still underneath our chest. All he said was "I agreed with my assistant".

Now, I could see if Tolin grabs the far ankle and gets us to our hip, maybe a reversal. This position, to me, seems similar to when the offensive wrestler in the top position, comes out front and has the defensive wrestler in a front headlock. If the bottom man does not break that position, creating a loss of control from the offensive wrestler, no escape is rewarded.

Again, I am not a ref and I could be misunderstanding the rule. Your input is appreciated.
