  1. Sadly, from talking to several folks being recruited or in the know, this absolutely seems to be the case with Tanelli. Some are not understanding what they are doing with the lower weights, development, washing guys out, etc. It is not going unnoticed on the recruiting trail. Now for the big guys, Tyrel Todd has been a great hire. A stud recruiter, mature, and is perceived as a very good teacher. Well thought of by the coaches I talk to.
  2. Transformation complete! No AA's, wasted development opportunities, 43rd place, 13th of 14th Big Ten Teams ahead of Michigan State who had -.5 points. But hey, we had 10 qualifiers! Nice job AD Burke

Allocations - Your nuts if you don't think the Big Ten was allocated more as a result of Maryland and Rutgers - the Big Ten noted last year in discussion about the team addition and impact. 12 new allocations did not just get added because of last year, they were a result of more competition from the addition of 2 East Coast teams. As to your Hillary Clintonesque Facts: 1. Purdue 2015 went 10-8 (3-6 conference), while Purdue 2014 went 6-8 (1-7 conference). - They added Michigan State and Northwestern (who was forfeiting 1-2 weights all year.) and dropped #1 Minnesota and #2 Iowa (final team polls). I'll take that trade every year. 2. Purdue 2015's dual meet point differential was 2 points better per dual than 2014 in 8 common Division I duals and 4 points better in all common duals. In 2014, Purdue wrestled 1,2,3,5,7,8, and #11 (7 of the top 11 in the FINAL coaches Poll), including perhaps the best Penn State Team of All-Time, the best Northern-Iowa (undefeated) team, a Minnesota team with 7-AA, and an Iowa Team with 6-AA. In 2015, this would be like taking #2, #3, and #8 OFF of your schedule. It's not even close. In 2015, Purdue was in the matches against Illinois (Purdue wrestled 125 back-up), OSU, and UNI. Purdue also beat at least one FINAL Top 25 Team last year, which they did not do this year. 3. Purdue 2015 had 3 wins over teams ranked at the time of the match. In 2014, they had none. What a load of BS, who cares what they were ranked at the "time of the match". NONE OF THOSE TEAMS FINISHED RANKED IN THE TOP 25 in the FINAL COACHES POLL in 2015. Purdue also beat at least one FINAL Top 25 Team last year. 4. Purdue 2015 finished the season ranked, while in 2014 they did not. - They were #26 last year, #24 in final poll. Dropping Iowa (now #2) & Minnesota (now #4), and picking up a brutal Michigan State and a depleted Northwestern, in addition to the worst IU Team in school history is kind of a big deal. Had you told me MSU and IU were so great, we could have rushed the mat after the victory. 5. Purdue 2015 qualified 8 guys for NCAA's compared to 4 in 2014 when the system for determining the depth of your conference's individuals for allocation purposes was exactly the same, no matter the number of teams (side note: if you want to ignore Rutgers and Maryland's presence, Purdue's B1G tournament placement per guy against only the 12 teams of the previous Big 10 was about 0.5 spots higher on average in 2015 than in 2014) Again, adding weak sister Maryland and Rutgers was the boon for Purdue - no other Team wrestled them as much at the Tourney. The allocations they brought was just enough for Purdue to win out in the 10th place matches. Whoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!! Purdue went 6-2 against these teams. That is where they bread was buttered. 2014 Illinois L18-16 2015Illinois L 21- 9 2014 Ohio State L16-15 2015Ohio State - L 24-9 2014 Nebraska L28-9 2015Nebraska L 25-6 2014 Penn State L34-3 2015 Penn State L 26-9 (2014 PSU Team was arguable the best team in PSU History - this years was filled with back-ups for guys taking shirts) 2014 Michigan L 22-12 2015 Michigan L 26-9 (Had Michigan fielded it's full starting line-up, it could have been 40-3.)
  4. Thanks for posting this; while it SEEMS like improvement, but before the AD runs out with bonuses for the coaches, let's analyze the data. I think the 8 qualifiers are misleading, especially when you have guys finishing 10th place. I wish the results were due to better wrestling, but if you study the data objectively, you would see there is a little more reality behind the scenes that benefited the Boilers this year. Celebrate all they want, but this has some smoke & mirrors to it: Key Observations: 1. Allocations, Allocations, Allocations - with the increase of 12 big Ten allocations from last year the Boilers were the primary beneficiary especially at 133, 174, and 184. Not good when your top 10 ranked 133lb guy gets pinned for 10th place. Using last year's Allocations they would be lucky to get one more qualifier. (see items #2 & #3) 2. Maryland & Rutgers - Just what the doctor Ordered! In having these two teams, the Big Ten picked up their allocations, while these teams had brutal inaugural tourney's. (Maryland lost NCAA finalist Sheptock from last years squad). Purdue made hay on these weaklings with a 6-2 head to head record, with important match-up wins in some first round bouts, and some 9th place semifinal bouts. This alone gave you key qualification wins in 3 or 4 weight classes. Throw these team in the 2014 big Ten Mix and the impact would be huge. 3. Getting Health Welch Twins Back - having these two 4th year guys back from injury benefited the new staff immensely in wins at the tourney and qualifiers. Also helped that your 141 lbr had some victories in the tourney over guys who were wrestling 133 pounds earlier in the year, those are match-ups you should win if you are lucky enough to get the draws. 4. Indiana & MSU - Worst Teams in Recent History - In addition to Maryland and Rutgers, these two team were brutal. Purdue was 0-2 head to head against IU losing twice at 174. these two team lost their NCAA points from last year was their AA Heavyweights. These teams were terrible. 5. 2015 Team Points - scored only 3 points with more matches wrestled in 2015, when they scored 34.5 team points, yet you have 4 more automatic qualifiers - go figure. The individual wins compared to last year boils down to match-ups with inferior Rutgers and Maryland grapplers, no other way to cut it. Positives #6 - First Round Wins - the difference in this year tourney is that you win the first match, and get a bye in the wrestleback, you can finish no worse than 10th place in most cases. But of course a few of those wins were against Rutgers/Maryland, see #2 above.   5. Impressive. I noted to my fellow attendees that it seemed he look to be going through the motions, was not aggressive, or something was off. Normally he is incredibly talented, good body position, works well inside, attacks. With the slate of injuries, now we know why.

  10. I expected New Castle Semistate to be 5+ finalists ahead of everyone else, but the Merrillville Semi-state really impressed me today as I believe both NC and MERR have 11 finalists. Even in a down year, after the lost some generational guys, and some topped rank guys this year that didn't perform well, they still had depth to push guys through to the finals. Team wise 1,4,5,and 7 is quite good. Also in the Lee vs James match, kudos to the young Lee. However, I have no love loss for Meridian but IMO, James got screwed on the take down at the end of the 2nd/early 3rd at the edge of the mat; it Changed the complection of the match and you could see it in James. These refs are so inconsistent on out of bounds that I don't know what the rule is any more. But you have to overcome. At 182, The Parris kid is tough, calling it now, next year's final, Parris vs. Davison of Chesterton
  11. No agenda, but I will gladly take you up on the end of year. But it is also obvious to see against the same 7 DIV. I opponents last year, that your data is not correct. Against the common DI opponents, Purdue is actually averaging only a 6 point differential last year (Purdue16 to Opponent=22) as compared to almost a 10 point differential (Purdue 12 to Opponent 21.7) in 2015, which is a 4 point drop. It does not include SIU, which is not a DI program. And that's with 2014 Penn State coming off of their best team ever, Northern Iowa (#5) having their best Team ever. Schedule is always strong, but last year wrestled the #1, #2, #3, and #5 dual teams including Iowa and Minnesota. This year they did add a strong Missouri team
  12. No problem, thanks for starting the post. To your question: From what I understand is that the assistant AD, who is responsible for the Olympic/Minor sports. pushed for the change for a number of reasons; some believe their were personal philosophy clashes, some believe the assistant AD had thought Coach Hinkle lost control of the program, which was bs conjecture. No mater what you thought, what we all saw on TV and in matches was a team wrestling hard and improving. Despite the AAD's public claims to Purdue fan-base that Coach Hinkle was his guy, it turned out to be pure hand-jobbing. What this AD and assistant AD failed to realize is that the wrestling community is a tight night group that watches everything and sees what goes on, and this can impact their desire to simply just apply for a job unprovoked. Most familiar with the Purdue way, there is difficulty in getting things done directly (for example the Athletic Dept is not state funded). At Purdue, you don't clash with the AD and assistant AD and ask for things. (For example, the AD has all power to hire/fire assistants.) Most understood the mountain that Coach Hinkle had to climb, and the steps he was taking to get there including wrestling development, facilities like a new wrestling room which Coach Hinkle carried most of the effort on, alumni development, marketing/branding, and other foundational issues to compete in the long run. Patiently those issues were being improved. The timing was killer for recruiting, among other things. Purdue was building some recruiting momentum, and was 'in deep' with several high profile recruits for this year's class due to long developed Purdue connections (like the Valencias, Stroker, etc. ), on top of the focus they were putting on getting Indiana's best, which Purdue made a priority. So let's put aside that past, for a second and to summarize the new coaching search - the AD Staff preparation, timing, process, and direction was 100% FUBAR. To make the right hire in Big Ten Wrestling, it takes due-diligence, a reality check, and a chess-like strategy. The caveat is that these things need too be prepared long in advance of making a change, not in April or May. A good AD should have a list of the top 20-30 achievable head coach candidates, rising assistants, program trends, etc. updated every year. It's not an NCAA infraction to write a hand written letter to a top assistant coach and say "congratulations, I like what you are doing, best of luck" just to keep blood lines flowing. You need to perform an honest assessment of your goals & objectives, clear vision to meet those goals, affirmative direction, 'industry' expertise, a decision on what you are going to allocate for resources (head, assistants, volunteer coaches, grad assistants, and the new term ' administrative assistants', (guys you are going to pay to stay around and wrestle), clubs, etc. To not have any of this ready, especially during the same year you just freaking just hosted your programs program's 100th celebration is derelict of duty, and just unbelievable. If they deem it is their decision to make the change, then be organized and prepared, which was definitely not the case. So, instead of putting together an executive recruiting search plan, vision, and assembling an 'experienced team' around them (AD & assistant AD), the Assistant AD probably assumes, 'Hey,I hired a track coach, how hard can a wrestling coach in the Big Ten be?' Putting a job description on Monsterjobs.com is not recruiting...so sad.
  13. From what I watched at match yesterday, not what I expected. To your points, those ranked team are probably not ranked in the top 20 anymore, and have depth issues as well. A team like Northwestern giving up a FFT is at least a 9 point swing in each dual meet. As others have pointed out, the stalling calls yesterday were disappointing.   14. Staff change has nothing to do with that. Welches bring hurt last year had more to it, and Doug could always wrestle with Green, as exhibited by their national high school match after senior year. Sabatello dropping down from 141 to 133 is the biggest reason for his success, among other things like room completion, etc. Beating Richards is not surprising; if I recall last year Cashe was thumping Richards via pin twice, and Sabatello did ok against Cashe from what I'm told. Richards is not a closer yet.
  15. So what did I write that was not factual, dishonest, or condescending? I purely provided objective data for a factual comparison between last year's squad and this year's team. There is zero opinion involved in that, numbers don't lie. I want to see a return of the program to prominence as much as anyone. If you would like me to provide my constructive opinions on the soft aspects of the program direction that others are observing, we can discuss.
  16. Transformation? By what measurement? Considering that this years schedule doesn't have Iowa and Minnesota, the results don't indicate a transformation. Throw in some questionable line up decisions, I'm not buying it yet.   17. Was at the match today in Ohio today. So much for coach of the year. I thought the Boilers put up a much better fight last year. Going to be an interesting 2-3 weeks. Nice match by Nelson and Doug Welch. Gelen was a bit winded, but had 2 takedowns. Not bad for 29 days in the wrestling room, which in itself is something that puzzles me about line up selection... I don't know exactly, but reports from what I hear he is much, much bigger like 20lbs over his senior year high school weight, and already passing 133
  18. That is life in the Big Ten, there are not weeks off or fishes. He is 9-13 so far this year? He seems like a tweener, cutting for 184 (?), way to small for 197, his high school weight. I don't know if he cut much in high school, but I imagine the academics of a Northwestern (or any Big Ten School) and dieting take some time to get used to. However, 184 currently is one of the weaker Big Ten weights on the top end, but still has 5 or 6 guys in that 10-20 ranking. 184 & 197 are the weights where unheralded guys improve the most; some of these guys are maturing, and many who did not wrestle year round in high school are making that jump in technique, and the strength development happens. You can't push guys around anymore. That's why you see so many MAC, East Coast, / PA guys - underrated in high school, got into college, size exploded...
  19. I am not convinced yet at this point. These next few weeks are going to be telling. I finally took a few minutes to look at the results this year and last, talked to various people familiar with the program. Some common things I hear when looking at this year vs. last: * The hire of Tyrel Todd as an assistant was great, it's showing in the recruiting. It goes to show limitations that the previous head coach was dealing with; it was common knowledge that Jesse and Hinkle, were not afforded the luxury of choosing their own assistants. Also, how does Purdue not already have a volunteer assistant coach or Grad Assistant in place? That needs to be a priority. * Purdue did not wrestle Wisconsin last year (loss this year), and Northwestern (Win this year), but when you have NW giving up forfeits, that helps. Purdue also lost Iowa and Minnesota from their schedule this year - who are #1 & #2...I'll take that trade Against common opponents results are not that much different. Purdue beat Chattanooga by similar score, and that's with Cashe losing last year; Nebraska. similar score, and that's with Cashe getting caught in a cradle after being up. Northern Iowa was a nice win, but Northern Iowa lost a lot of ranked guys, including two AA's, from last years undefeated squad. It's tough to tell improvement on a tournament sense as they are wrestling in totally different tournaments this year. However, last year they finished 13th at Midlands last year and 16th this year. Midlands was a great deal stronger last year, but Atwood did not wrestle this year. * Toward the end of the dual season last year, I thought the 2014 squad was wrestling pretty darn good with good intensity, with some great televised matches with some Tip 15 teams like Ohio State, Illinois. The killer was not placing any AA's last year. * Wrestlers / Development - If I am not mistaken, I thought at least one, if not both of the Welch Twins were hurt for most of last year. Nice to have them back in full duty. Sabatello is wrestling very good, and has benefitted from dropping down to 133 from 141. Not sure if it depth, but it seams the other Big Ten teams are doing a better job or rotating guys in the line-up. I heard 184 Redshirt freshman Jacob Morrissey is going to be a hammer. I am not sure of their plan at 149 with Nelson and Griffin but I heard wrestle-offs were close; both have been in and out of the line-up. I don't understand, if the wrestle-offs at 133 between Sabatello and Ayersman were so close, and Sabetello is wrestling so well, why isn't Purdue getting Ayersman matches at 133 or 141? I was told the 125 wrestle-offs were pretty close with Assad, and Welch; freshman Thorton is finally growing into a college 125lbr.

  21. Tough schedule, 7 top-15 teams, plus Minnesota (big tens) and Iowa (Midlands and Big Tens) is why you wrestle in the Big Ten. Additionally they will see other top 15 teams including Virginia Tech, Edinboro, and Oklahoma at Midlands. Todd spent the last two seasons training with the Cliff Keen Wrestling Club, where he recently competed at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials. He was the 2012 Guelph Open Champion as well during his time training professionally. He was fourth at the 2008 Olympic trials at 84 kilograms, just missing a bid to the Beijing Olympics in the process. Todd spent one season at Cal Poly as an assistant coach from July 2010 to August 2011. Todd was a three-time All-American at Michigan, winning the 2009 Big Ten Conference championship at 197 pounds. Todd served as an assistant for the Wolverines following his graduation for one season. He was fourth at the NCAA Championships as a senior in 2009 at 197 pounds and was third at 184 pounds as a junior in 2008. He was a three-time Senior National All-American in Freestyle in 2007, 2008 and 2011. Todd, a native Montanian, was raised on a dairy farm 12 miles west of Bozeman. He is the oldest of three boys born to Jeff and Kimberly Todd and his younger brothers are Tay and Tel. In his prep carreer, Todd was a three-time Montana State Champion, two-time Junior National All-American and Senior National Champion at Bozeman High School for coach Tony Beardsley. He received his degree from MU in secondary education with an emphasis on history and psychology.
