I don’t think bad wrestling exists up north. I am originally from Michigan City, Indiana, but I went to school in Indianapolis as I moved with my mom and brothers while my dad stayed up north. I didn’t start wrestling until eighth grade, but I quickly noticed A LOT of the best wrestlers were coming from up north. I’ve always considered the Region to be “top heavy” with the top-ranked wrestlers often being from that area. I don’t know if it’s because it’s a big metro area, but it’s certainly my favorite place to be because there’s no place like home, and the wrestling is top tier. I don’t think bad wrestling exists in that area. Every opponent I had from there was tough, each school had a solid schedule, if you competed in the DAC, you had some guts, and every wrestler up there had a certain air of toughness about them. This isn’t to say Northern, Northeastern, Eastern, Western, Central or Southern Indiana aren’t great and competitive, but some of the toughest opponents I remember were from the Region because they were (and still are) a hotbed of wrestling that gave my teammates and I some of our hardest matches. There’s always some D1 talent lurking there and a huge concentration of high placing wrestlers.

Slamming the team is what I said. The team consists of coaches, student athletes, managers, their supporters.  Talking about permanently banning them. Sounds creepy and insidious. And has some undertones to it that I might consider culturally biased.  I see the demographic of the Warren athletes and I see them getting hosed all the time like at the Al Smith. The officiating was totally biased as if they didn’t want the kids from Warren to win. Now don’t try to mansplain something to me like I can't read between the lines and I haven’t seen this type of Good Ol’ Boys getting their panties in a bunch about a situation that doesn’t concern them. A bunch of Chads and Karens.

I am sure wrestling at region wrestling academy helps when you are with the same people every weekend you build relationships with like minded people.

it sounds like a couple 8th graders might be there also.

I do not think any current  CP coaches help at RWA. They are all go for Bulldogs Premier

i can not speak for the other areas but Buying a house in CP is tough, it’s a hot over priced market. If you are convincing families to sell their current homes and buy a new house in Cp then you might be in the wrong line of work.

What is the day of the tournament? We would love to be able to wrestle an established program like Hobart in a dual. We both go to the Harvest but its hard to gage at such an early date in a bracketed tournament format.

Agree with consistency  of stalling. We have Mishawaka area officials come in for our Conference tourney and it is SO different than the rest of the year.

One big area I tried to improve when I took over at HSE 5 years ago was ensuring we wrestled aggressively so I track stalling every year to see what positions we're getting hit in and what the context is (a stalling in the first/second period is very different than one when you're up by 5 and just icing the match in an individual tourney especially).

This past 2 years data with the Mishawaka officials at Conference are telling:

    2021-22 Data:
Top Position Stalls: 7 (5 at conference by one official, 2 for not returning the guy quickly enough)
Bottom Position Stalls: 10 (6 at conference, the other 4 by one kid who legit stalls on bottom)
Neutral Stalling (including double stalls (only 1 of those): 12 (6 at conference, 3 at semistate (all by same official))

    2022-23 Data:
Top Position Stalls: 6 (5 at conference, 3 by same official, the other was this past weekend by not returning to mat in 3rd place bout)
Bottom Position Stalls: 6 (4 at conference, 1 at Regionals)
Neutral Stalls: 8 (5 at conference, 3 others when we were icing matches)

My kids sometimes get out of position, but one of our strategies has been to have the deepest gas tank, keep scoring points, and stay on the gas even when winning. All this to say that most officials recognize this and we don't get hit with a lot of stalling as a program because of it. EXCEPT during one tourney where the officials come from a different part of the state. I'm not complaining about those officials, they do a great job, they just see it differently and call it differently. It's good for our guys to be exposed to that so they're not shocked by it in the state series.

As you stated, don't care which way we do it, but clearly there is a difference in how it is being interpreted and that needs to be streamlined so that we can coach it correctly for our kids.

So many great names in this topic. My brother and I had a conversation this weekend about how tough it is to make the semi-final match of the State tournament. I get that some paths leading there are more difficult than others, but to get to that match, you are beating someone pretty good, or at least someone that just beat someone pretty good. My hats off to all the current and previous state semi-finalist. To me this makes it even more impressive how some guys just make this look so easy.

Community Feel?  I have lived in 3 towns in Lake County growing up and Crown Point is definitely a community.  Shoot I think there was 200 people waiting in the square after Jesse won Who's #1.  Guess you just have to be part of it to know the feeling.

Coaches are top notch as well.  They not only cared about his wrestling success, but him as a person.  We definitely felt the love from community and the coaches.
