  1. Last year: Tourney entries for Club teams: $600 Tourney Entries for my own kid: $1200 Shoes: $400 Headgear: $50 Singlets: $150 Hotel Costs: $500 (we don't do many out of town tourneys) Tourney Gate Fees as parent: $200 Tourney Gate Fees as a coach: $200 Medical supplies for athletes: $100 Gas: ?? At least $200 Food at tourneys: ??? At least $300 Club Dues: $1200 Coaching Card and Clinics: $300 I'm sure I'm forgetting other costs, but just with that we're at $5400 and my kid is only 10 and doesn't do a tourney every weekend yet even, let alone national tournaments. So I could see easily spending 10 grand year at minimum if your kid does national level events even 2-3 times/year. Also, is there a way to ensure this post is unable to be viewed by wives? Asking for a friend...
  2. Still haven't received the survey, but some interesting topics here: 1) Do we really need 2,3, and 4 point nearfall? It's not that hard to turn at our level. I get why NCAA did it, but our athletes aren't quite as difficult. I wouldn't hate it and it fits with how we coach, but not sure it's necessary. 2) Mat side weigh-ins: I had a discussion with other coaches about this earlier this year. I'm not sure it's ever gonna be possible. In theory, it would be good and Would help curve athletes that want to cut a ton and force them into wrestling closer to natural weight HOWEVER, I don't think it gets passed because it would only take one kid to think dehydrating and getting down to weight to help the team is a good idea or gets pressured by a coach and then they pass out or have a serious health issue on the mat due to sucking weight for our sport to be cancelled forever. Great idea in theory. Would be extremely challenging to ensure kids/coaches are being smart and could possibly damage the sports reputation in a very harmful way.
  3. Hamilton Southeastern is looking to expand which parts of the state we visit. We see a lot of Central Indiana and a lot of Southern Indiana. Looking to get some northern flavor involved. If any tourneys in the Ft. Wayne or NW Indiana areas are looking to add some Indianapolis flavor in December or early January, let me know what dates. We have a couple weekends we can't change, but are open minded on most of them. Contact me on here or via email at nbrobst@hse.k12.in.us if you have an opening you think we'd be a good fit for!
  4. Some great Royals for sure. I was narrowing it down to 2 time qualifiers at minimum for "most accomplished", though all of these guys have an argument for "best" wrestler in HSE history. Spencer with only 1 medal, but that huge upset definitely crossed my mind. Hadn't realized Farrell qualified his Junior year, he'd be up there for sure. His kids were no slouches either (JD took 3rd for the Tigers and then Crew was a 4 time Regional Champion at Frankton). P-Rob is one of my favorite dudes in the sport, NCAA Qualifier at Purdue after his late blooming Senior year for the Royals. Neibarger was awesome. Really fun, but as you mentioned only won one medal at HSE. Pompei may qualify as most accomplished Royal in wrestling for career totality for sure when you add in his collegiate time and his coaching as well. I wasn't here for it, but according to Coach Rypel here who got teched by him his freshman year, John Tatom was the best 160 pounder in the state his senior year before tearing up his knee. As it is, he also placed 6th once for HSE prior to his career ending injury. Long story short, HSE has been way too good for way too long without having a champion. Gotta get that monkey off our back in the next 5 years.
  5. HSE has a few options: Jack Chastain is the career wins leader and Qualified as a Sophomore, took 5th twice Austin Holmes qualified 3 times and won 2 4th place medals his Sophomore and Junior year. He’s second all time in wins. Matt Irick likely would have been the guy had he not been hurt his Junior year. 2 time qualifier, 5th placer. Jake Simone was a headlock and a bad draw away from maybe being the guy: Sophomore year he’s ranked top 4 in state, Regional Champ, up 6-2 on David Pierson in ticket round, in on another single, the patented DP headlock takes him out. Junior year, wins 8th place medal, Senior year, ranked 4th, loses to Eldred of Westfield 2-1 in Regionals, Eldred takes 2nd that year to Seltzer, who you guessed it, was Simone’s ticket round match that year. Awful. As it lays: Andrew Irick is likely the guy. 2 time medalist in his 3 years as a starter taking 4th as a Junior, runner-up his Senior year in 2020 after a Semi-state title. Only 2 time qualifier since then has been Max Broom, who never medaled but is the career leader in falls and won more matches with only one move (cradle) than anyone I’ve ever seen. Got a crop of 7th/8th graders that have as much if not more credentials coming in than any of those guys. Hoping for that first champ in the next few seasons
  6. Watching Noah all off-season train at CIA, I wasn’t surprised by this one. At CP in December after our 190, who is no slouch, faced him the finals (and got pinned), he came off the mat and said “I hit the deepest nicest reattack single on that kid and when he wanted to take his leg away, there was nothing I could do. He just took it!” So for sure the weight room has been a factor as well! It was easy to see the improvement all year. Congrats to him and a great wrestling family!
  7. It was called in our 215 pounders match against Brandon Johnson from LN. Should have been a legit takedown (and it was my kid getting taken down), but the official called it out of bounds and then changed it to fleeing afterwards. I'm cool with double stalls in the first (never after that, because of how it unfairly affects the match once points have been scored) if nobody is doing anything at all (level changing, using ties, moving their opponent, etc;), but personally think officials need to let the action unfold, it just takes more time when you weigh 270. No reason to insert themselves into matches until it's necessary. If they're both stalling, that's on them, nobody has an advantage, why do you have to call anything? Who are you helping by throwing up a stall call on both people? Let the wrestling unfold and score it appropriately. No reason to be involved just because it is boring to watch.
  8. Correct the genius ratings are used to determine how many “expected” semi-state level kids there are in each Regional. I’m sure missing results doesn’t help anything.
  9. Just measures for crowdedness or how hard it is to get to semi-state in the first place. Can't determine how deep a regional is based on how many kids they qualify for state, especially not when one program is very good (Cathedral took 7 by themselves). That being said, this year, I don't see much of a discernable difference between the two regionals. They probably belong on the same line, but due to the math of it all, NM must have been closer to 4 and Pendleton closer to 3.
  10. I'll take a stab at these. Footnote: I know the least about this semi-state aside from the teams we've seen, which is only Yorktown, Cowan, and Delta during the season and a little North Miami, Oak Hill, Maconaquoh and Prairie Heights during the off-season, so obviously I'll be dead wrong on like all of these, but I like making predictions and can't separate my head from my heart in New Castle so here goes nothing: In predicted order: 106- Boyd, Moore, Ocampo, Fleshman 113- Bollinger, Salazar, Johns, Fuller 120- Tishner, Jackson, Raber, Douglas 126- Mosier, Rowles, Waldon, Love (don't sleep on my guy Tripp Haisley, he's legit, but Rowles as Senior, probalby too tough) 132- Bradley, Linser, Fielden, Stuffel 138- Wood, Boone, Carter, Dews 144- Doster, Hagewood, Bollenbacher, Liscano 150- Jett, Hagewood, Teusch, Elkins 157- Betz, Russell, Davis, Clouse 165- Stebbins, Myers, Abbott, Trevino 175- Leech, Russell, Detwiler, Farnell (this one could fall a lot of ways, it seems) 190- Cressell, Currie, Ringeison, Caudell (calling a couple "upsets" here) 215- Hinton, Evans, Martin, Bluhm 285- Hartleroad, Coolman, Dodson, Cruz (decently confident in my 4 (not the order so much) minus unsure on Hartleroad and Wurm, Saw Hartleroad at a bunch of off-season stuff and always looked solid, so going with who I know better) Good luck Ft. Wayne coaches and athletes. Hoping to see many of you in Evansville if I can push a Royal or 4-9 through New Castle.
  11. IDOE just released a new count a week or so ago. Had DC at 2050. I'm sure that's where these numbers come from and they're the same numbers that will be used for classification in other sports as well.
  12. I believe Rushville had a Tuff Tackett a year or two ago. one of my favorite names for sure
  13. 46-10!! Jennings County-Jeffersonville. Wow
  14. At North Mont: Crawfordsville: 22 advancing, 5 champs, 7 runner ups, 5 3rd placers, 5 4th placers Frankfort: 34 advancing, 9 champs, 7 runner ups, 9 3rd placers, 9 4th placers
  15. Like I said, wouldn't be surprised if it's just a low attendance year due to location and the concern for getting tickets is moot. But we'll see.
  16. Well that's good to know. I'm just saying I understand the concern some fans are having with the availability of tickets. For instance, we usually bring a pretty sizable crowd of 30-50 fans, even if we only qualify 1-3 kids. I know we have a large group of 30 already prepping to go down and stay in Evansville this year, but there are real concerns about whether everyone will be able to get tickets. You noted we averaged 11,000 people per session in 2017. Assuming that's still the case with extra drive for some, that's 1500 people who won't be able to attend. So we're either reliant upon 1500 people not wanting to make the effort or we're going to have a ticket shortage. Any time we have a new situation, there will be anxiety regarding it and I'm sure the issues in 2021 being so fresh in everyone's minds aren't helping assuage those feelings any.
  17. But the capacity at Gainbridge is over 17,000. So though maybe only 1500 people who "usually" go won't be able to, there will be a lot less space than there is in Gainbridge, which is probably why the poster is worried about seating already. It may be a hot ticket. I wouldn't be surprised if several people don't make the trek that would if it were in Indy, I also wouldn't be surprised if people who want to go can't get tickets due to the number of seats available.
  18. Zionsville used to be in the same sectional as Fishers, HSE, Lebanon, Carmel, and Westfield along with Clinton Prairie, Clinton Central, Sheridan, and Frankfort. 2 adjustments ago, they moved Zionsville out to Crawfordsville and they are obviously the farthest West of the teams in that sectional, so I suppose geographically that fits. Why they only sent one of 5 6A schools? Why they sent one at all I assume was to relieve some of the crowdedness between sectionals as they say they like to balance student population size within sectionals that feed the same regional. Now I'm not Math wizard, but I'm pretty confident that the Frankfort Sectional still has way more student population than the Crawfordsville one. I thought maybe they'd move another one that direction with the new realignment this year, but they did not.

  20. I would agree they could use another.
  21. Evansville is not bad. I think we were still home by 7 even with the 3 hour drive And y’all will be there for semi-state already, should be easy enough our kids have to take themselves down there to qualify but they all liked it
  22. It’s usually Indy Nationals Not gonna get into it much, but avoid that one if you can. We take ours down to Evansville and if they don’t qualify, some still go to Indy if they have to
  23. Coach Kyle Poyer bought plaid with him to HSE when Highland closed. We still have a few left. They’re pretty cool!
  24. I’ve coached with many a coach who would rather plan their season based off of hospitality rooms than competition level! That said, I’ve coached at schools feeding Tech, Mooresville, and now Frankfort and all do a good job across the board. Having an AD that knows what they don’t know or is actually articulate in wrestling helps a ton so Mooresville has an edge with Mossbrucker running things. But the Frankfort AD always does a good job deferring to the coaches and what they know at the seeding meeting and I’ve never left a meeting at any of the sites where I felt we seeded it wrong based on criteria. Sometimes it takes some loud voices, but always ends up the way it should with criteria. All in all, the 3 sites were all good. Looking forward to going back to Case Arena next week!
