LionsFan reacted to Coach Peck in SEMI-STATE: Upsets, Key Matches, Etc.
A slam is a judgement call., The big part of what the rule states is that when someone picks the other person up they are responsible for their safe return to the mat. The safe return is purely the responsibility of the offensive wrestler, and there is no requirement for the defender to protect himself. Years ago there was the criteria that the offensive wrestler had to hit a knee first, but that was discarded a long time ago. The slam is a needed call in wrestling because it keeps someone from intentionally drilling someone to win a match, or to make it harder for the opponent to compete. The thing that makes it bad is that whether a kid can continue competing, or not, is dependent on a decision that has to be made in 2:00 minutes of "recovery time". The only person the coach is responsible to is his wrestler. If he thinks that the slam has impaired his wrestlers ability to possibly win the match then his best decision is to not continue. The ability to continue, or not, only has to do with what is going on in that match and has nothing to do with the rest of the tournament. Postulating if the wrestler may be able to compete later, or not, has no (and should not have any) bearing on the decision at that moment. The wrestlers ability to wrestle in matches later in a tournament only indicates that he was able to continue with more recovery time, but proves nothing as to the severity (or lack of severity) at the time the match was ended due to disqualification. I would also add that I have almost never seen a match where to person is DQed for a slam and his coaches, fans, and family were happy.

LionsFan got a reaction from rgreenwood3636 in Sectional Seeding Criteria Question
I think this is also important. Coaches need to keep an open mind. Yes we all want our wrestlers to advance the furthest they possibly can, but we also need to be realistic. I think my point can be proven years ago when one of the Keiffer brothers and Brandon Wright were the #2 and #3 seeds because the #1 was the returning sectional champion in that weight class. I don't think you can argue strength of schedule because it is not the kids fault that they wrestle who they wrestle.I'm sure we all know of kids who come in with stellar records and higher seeds and then lose early in the tournament or do not advance. I think that goes back to the coaches keeping an open mind when seeding wrestlers. Also after a seed has been placed, the whole criteria for seeding starts over again.

LionsFan reacted to Wrestlingfan937 in 224 State Qualifiers Can't be Together?!
As long as their is a state finals we all are good. If they decide to limit spectators, multiple sessions or whatever they decide to do is okay in my opinion as long as the kids can have their state tournament. As a fan of the sport I am willing to give up my attendance and just pay for it on track or whatever stream they decide to go with. At the end of they day this is about the kids not us parents, friends, and coaches. The ihsaa has done an awesome job this season and I trust them not to let us down.

Happen to us last weekend. We lost to East Central 78-6. Two of their wins were forfeits, rest were pins, and our win was by pin.

LionsFan reacted to piscis1956 in Remind me the rule on tourneys and duals...
You don’t really “lose” points. You just voluntarily give them up. Basically, you can have up to a MAXIMUM of 18 points but can’t use more than 12 of them in “tournaments” (including multi-duals). But you don’t have to use all 18. (Some teams don’t in fact.)

LionsFan reacted to MattM in Remind me the rule on tourneys and duals...
I guess it’s not really losing the point, it’s just leaving them in the table. Let say you have your 6th dual meet cancelled due to weather and it isn’t made up. Essentially you couldn’t turn around and use that point to help you jumping into a late season tournament or multi-dual (if you had another point someplace too). So either find another dual to meet the required 6 or leave that point on the table. IHSAA isn’t penalizing you for not getting 6, as much as it’s saying you can’t just fill your schedule with tournaments and multi-duals without regard for booking single dual meets too.

I think their school and coaching staff have better ethics than that.

I don’t think this is up to the coach. If a wrestler is DQed then they have to sit the next contest.
