  1. Ben Krege's senior year was great fun, with Carmel becoming a competitive team and winning the County, the North Central Super 6, Zionsville Sectional, and the North Mont Regional. Ben wrestled his heart out and was County Champ, MIC Conference Champ, Sectional Champ, and in the regionals was second to Borta. In the semi-state ticket round, Ben drew Vinnie Corsaro. Coach Pendoski gave Ben hope – he is a great and inspirational leader - but Vinnie was too much and that was it. I find myself grieving over the end of this phase of our lives together. I think about all of the ups and downs, the early mornings, the painful trips to CIA, the cutting weight, the nearly endless grind of lengthy tournaments, and I can’t imagine anyone missing this, but I will and I do and it is hard to accept it is over. I miss Ben going out on the mat and showing his courage. I will miss this elemental struggle of heart and will and skill between Ben and an opponent giving everything they’ve got to prevail. The finality is hard to bear. But, I am also happy. Ben has had tremendous experiences and is looking forward to playing his music and pursuing his academic interests. He has learned many life lessons and become a good man. I am grateful to this sport and to the people who helped Ben, especially including his mom and sister, Coaches McVey, Simon, Kopnisky, Wegener, Pendoski, and many others, his teammates, his opponents, his training partners, and all the people who have encouraged and supported him.
  2. It is really fantastic to see everything gelling together at Carmel. The team has worked extremely hard and intelligently under the leadership of a great coach, assistant coaches, and volunteer coaches. The school has great facilities and an excellent athletic staff and academic administration including Principal Williams, a former wrestling coach. Seems like Carmel wrestling has come a long way for people to be alluding to recruiting. The swim club at Carmel is one of the finest in the country, and I have personally witnessed the amazing number of kids of all ages who participate and have fun in this club - I think that along with outstanding people and traditions has led to the success of the program. I'd be quite surprised if Carmel had any need to "recruit" for the swimming program, but I don't know much about it. However, in another area, I feel more qualified to make a few comments. Carmel every year wins the state Orchestra competition, and in my opinion the competitions are not even close. This is achieved with great middle school programs, dedicated families, a fantastic director and supporting staff, a huge amount of practice in school, after school, and at home, and so forth. A program that solid from all angles simply doesn't need to recruit.
  3. A bit off topic, but I happened to sit for a while in the Mater Dei section at the tournament on Saturday, and I was very impressed that there were a huge number of knowledgeable fans, parents, grandparents, and relatives. Although 8 teams were competing, it looked like about a third of the people were there for MD. I suspect that kind of support from family and community is a factor in the school's wrestling success.
  4. This was fun to watch. The fans from both teams were going nuts and the last 8 or so matches were won by fall. The lead went back and forth, and it came down to the last fall which went to Busco.
  5. Carmel had a great day with two great wins. The Oak Park team was indeed impressive. At 160 pounds, Kamal Bey was incredibly fast and athletic against Carmel. Then, he impressively defeated Illinois #1 and Nationally ranked #8 Peter Andreotti 10-2.
  6. Looks like the problem was a DUI. http://www.centredaily.com/2013/12/02/3921152/penn-state-wrestler-ed-ruth-charged.html
  7. Really happy for Coach McClurg and best wishes to Riley at Purdue. Thanks for this post.
  8. I've struggled with OOB calls for years. In the end, I've observed that if a kid dominates a match, he will win - that's it. If it is extremely even, these calls will go one way or the other and one kid or the other will win since ties are not permitted.
  9. To celebrate this season, I am raising a glass of New Castle. Until next year!
  10. Agree with Jchas. What I witnessed at the NC SS I attended yesterday was beyond a grind. It was war between young people leaving 8000% on the mat. Making it through seems to me a great lifetime achievement very worthy of celebration. Also, I think the kids that didn't make it through should celebrate their hard work, the lessons they learned, their skill, and their courage. For example, I've admired the wrestling and spirit of kids like Belden, Sparks, Connor James, and many others. Yesterday, I was inspired to see so many highly worthy young men perform so admirably, win or lose.
  11. A hypothetical wrestler positions himself at the edge of the mat so that forward moving leg atacks, etc. by his opponent would go out of bounds. Is this "working the edges" a legitimate strategy?
  12. I think that's correct: http://indianamat.com/messageboard/index.php/topic,19725.msg135640.html#msg135640
