PatParham reacted to formercollegekid in Wrestling not important to IHSAA
So this year's state tournament was "fine" and you are no less a state champ, placer, or qualifier if you went to this one than if it was held at indy or somewhere else.

However blindly acting like it was all sunshine and roses is silly.

Evansville as a city did great. Most people found criticism with the IHSAA leadership. They could have moved the state tournament. Do it the same time as swimming. Ncaa does it all the time especially at the D2 level. It's a great atmosphere. . . It's also cheaper for most schools. 1bus, better hotel rates, AD only has to be in one place. Communities love it.

Ihsaa leadership wanted to be at all the state events.  Even came out and stated travel to and from the different sites on competition day was not something they were interested in doing.

I think some of you would feel differently if your loved one was competing in this tournament for possibly their first and/or only time.  Easy to blow off poor planing and tickets problems if you already have a "hookup" or you don't mind spending $102 on tickets.

moving wrestling was the path of least resistance.  Wrestling is a second class citizen in Indiana. It probably won't change until we get a "wrestling guy"  on the ihsaa staff.

So was this year's state tournament perfect? ? ?  No... is it time to move on?

    Definitely

Ps. Shout out to this 2024 class,
Guys like May, Leavell, Ison, and Myers only got one "normal" year

    2021- no fans present
    2022- split parade of champions
    2023- Normal year****
    2024 moved tournament

Congratulations to Luke Penola for winning the mental attitude award at the state finals. Luke didn’t reach his goal of winning a state title but he walked out of the arena with his head held high. He is one of the best leaders, wrestlers, and people we’ve ever been around. We are forever grateful to of coached you and to have you in our Zionsville wrestling family.

I received word that my High School coach Keith Farrand passed away last Thursday April 20th at the age of 92. He had a major impact on my life and choosing to pursue a career in teaching and coaching wrestling.
Mr. Farrand graduated from Purdue University where he also wrestled. He was a Physical education teacher and Head Wrestling coach at Indianapolis North Central for 27 years retiring in 1988. He had a record of 263 - 66 - 1. His North Central Panther teams won 3 Marion County Championships, 10 IHSAA Sectional Championships, 6 IHSAA Regional Championships and 2 IHSAA State Runner-Up teams. He coached 10 individual IHSAA State Champions. He served as an assisstant wrestling coach at Hamilton Heights High School after retiring from North Central. Mr. Farrand taught at Crawfordsville High School after graduating from Purdue and founded the Wabash College Wrestling Team. His first team at Wabash went 3-0 beating Notre Dame and Indiana Central twice. He was inducted into the IHSWCA Hall of Fame in 1976 and National Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame in 1984. Mr. Farrand helped found the IHSWCA and served as one of the early IHSWCA Presidents. He was also a IHSWCA Billy Thom Award winner.
Mr. Farrand attend 50 NCAA D1 Wrestling Championships and got my started attending the NCAAA Tournament which I continue today. I always looked forward to catching up at the NCAAs.
Mr. Farrand's obituary can be found in the Indianapolis Star.
I will miss him greatly. I'm proud to say I was one of Keith's Panther Wrestlers.

Jake's a strong case for certain, but the freshman Thrine taking out a national-ranked senior has to be right there. Prior to Saturday night,  would anyone have been surprised if either Jake or Ashton won another title? I would bet the most ardent Thrine supporters thought it would be a big lift to beat Frazier. That is not to say no one thought it was possible, only it was less likely.

If what Thrine did isn't the definition of "Outstanding," I don't know what is. That's not to take away from either Jake or Joey they were great.

While I'm at it, has any of the other freshman phenoms taken out a national-ranked wrestler in the finals?

Prior to 2011 I don't think East had won a sectional since the early 80's, they had never won a conference title, or a regional title, and never had an individual state champion. Few can turn a program like that into what East has become now

Letting the parents of the athletes get first dibs on tickets is a great idea and what is needed. The turn around time between Saturday night and this morning is really short to get the proper amount of codes to the right people. That is on top of drawing up the brackets on Sunday and other duties that they need to do before the event.

They have made big adjustments to the ticket process this year and it should be much smoother.

    3 FF's so out of 11 wrestlers
7 sectional champions with 10 going to Regionals
3 Regional Champions with 8 going to Semi State
2,2,3,3 Semi state finishes with 4 going to state
If it wasn't for a terrible draw, you could add Coy Hammack to the state finals list.

Ranked 4th going into the 1A tournament and came out of it Class 1A Champions. 21-4 record with losses to Heritage Hills, Col East, and Mater Dei.

They finished 4th in Semi State. Lets not forget they got 4th out of the most brutal and toughest semi state in Indiana!

I know other schools get recognition but my goodness, Tell City is a powerhouse this year!

All four of their state finals wrestlers are the lower ranking and may not win but Im impressed by TC.

PatParham reacted to Coach Brobst in Conference Tournaments
Hoosier Crossroads Conference is this weekend too. Some really good and deep weights with several Top Teams there:

    3 Top -20 ranked teams:

    #2 Brownsburg--speaks for themselves.

#14 Zionsville--who I believe is better than 14th with Frazier, Wagner, and Penola all being legit title contenders plus a few other kids that will place well.

#20 HSE- Lang, Wagner, and Burgett all have good shots at titles. Several other kids in the 3rd-5th range.

At least 3 other top 30 teams as well:

Avon, who has Both Rioux's Both Schoeffs, and Syra all of whom are capable of winning titles.

Westfield: O'Neil, Tanner, and Rooney all have shots at titles plus several more 3rd-6th placers

Fishers: Ingalls (top seed at 126) and Yants are pretty darn good as is Sophomore Chris Quarles at 182, mix in a couple other top 4 kids in conference as well.

Even the two "bottom" teams have studs in Noblesville (Austin Hastings at 220 along with a few solid middle weights) and Franklin Central (Andrew Just, Gauge Clark).

Perhaps I'm biased (HINT: I am), but I don't think there's a better wrestling conference top to bottom in the state. There's a good chance that all 8 teams have at least one state medalist on their team come years' end. I could be missing a conference, but I just don't know where else you find that.

Get to Brownsburg this Saturday for some good action that promises to be great from the opening round the final match.

    A few thoughts…

A statistician has never proven him/herself wrong.

If the Ft Wayne SS teams had not dropped each of the last 2 years, 3a would have looked a lot different.  Also remember, runner up Floyd Central 2 years ago was a late entry due to our being forced out.

Having a good dual team and having a good group of individual wrestlers are very different thing.

Our points system was a great way to get started and get this event rolling and established.  It is now outdated and needs to become obsolete.

Ive floated this idea to several 3a coaches, I believe it would work and be a vast improvement over using the prior years team to predict the future teams success.

Teams that believe they are good enough to be selected in the top 8(say 15-20 teams), Should just schedule the event and be prepared to wrestle.  The committee selects all 8 teams mid December based on current year results.  The second group of teams would still compete on that Saturday, just at a different location.  To make this work, we need a few teams who would be willing to host the alternate site.  Columbus East would definitely host if not selected.  The alternate site could be flexible with format, 6-10 teams, whatever is needed.

Solves the issue of schedule disruption, choosing teams 10 months ahead of time based on kids who aren’t even on the team, and allows current year results to select the deserving teams.
