I Rarely see the top guy with legs for stalling. This was probably a good ref who had guts to call stalling. IMO, I see so many guys just put legs in and do nothing. Just makes for a boring match.

Funny, I cannot ever remember Perry Meridian, EMD, Penn, or Warren Central, ever forfeiting a match at state.

This is what hundreds of people said when this "RULE" first came about. They were told "This will help local tourneys." "This will increase participation." "This will help Indiana and USA wrestling grow in the international styles." and that was the end of the story. Either follow the rule or you wouldn't wrestle at state...

Then a day before registration closes they tell everyone their "RULE" isn't a "RULE".

It's the most hypocritical thing I think I have ever witnessed in my entire life. This didn't just effect a few people... It effected every single kid who wrestles in this state and it's not right.

By all means I agree they should let everyone wrestle that wants to wrestle; BUT you can't make an April Fools joke out of a "RULE".

Could you imagine the backlash if the government turned around and said healthcare wasn't really mandated this whole time. They just said it was mandatory but in reality you could have just waited until 2 days before the deadline and signed a piece of paper to save you thousands of dollars a year?

Some of these folks without two tourneys have likely already got hotel rooms. There are going to get really dinged in the pocketbook by the hotel when they don't use it plus have sent money on gas. The iswa needs to answer now.

Thirded..but as a runnerup here. So this is confusing...Coach Hull and, I assume ISWA, want to increase the FS/GK Team IN skill level/Natl Team performances by mandating local level competition. Yet it seems from this limited sample size blog arena (no offense Y2..just don't know how many Central IN people have/utilize the tech! ) that 3 kids that have excelled in the past without mandates/ultimatums (so they had the internal drive to do so and didn't need pushing) are now excluded from participating in their State Series and thus ineligible for Natl teams if they were cadet or lower. That is sad. I know these kids are Junior level so they can be "invited" to participate at Natl's but to not be able to go to State is a travesty. I also know that these 3 can/will be offset by far more being eligible and hopefully attending ISWA state, but this is proof again that a "grandfather" type clause to start out might have been a better way to go so as to not cause animosity for those who have supported the styles/ISWA without ultimatums and mandates, while at the same time promoting future growth down the road.

I can't speak for others, but I'm not bitter..just extremely disappointed in the whole situation.

You missed Huntington.  The North has had plenty of tournaments (ISWA did a good job of boosting up the amount), numbers are just low and by low I mean very low.  I personally am not going to send my son to a tournament for 2 matches (unless they are quality ones) when I can get him much more quality matches by getting together with friends for free or going to RTC's.  Now if these tournaments were 10 deep per weight class, than we would be talking something different, but with the older groups that has always been a strugle.  I think the argument, at least for me is that ISWA is forcing the upper 10% to make a choice (commit 3-4 weeks to ISWA freestyle or compete in national wrestling events or spring school sports).  The other thing that is interesting to me is that all the "small school & class supporters" are not throwing a fit about this.  These small schools have to use their athletes in all 3 sport seasons.  So, to me it ISWA is saying choose wrestling or get out. Either way to me this is stupid, because you are taking away some of the best kids from the state events.  I understand their thinking, I just think that they went about it the wrong way.  I also believe that it will hurt Freestyle for a little while, if not long term here in Indiana.

I think this begs a larger question.  Why do we need an ISWA folkstyle state for high school wrestlers?  Especially two weeks after IHSAA state.

Imop, there is a major benefit to having ISWA folkstyle state for pee-wee through cadet (meaning cadets not in hs).  But I don't see the benefit for hs wrestlers.

I know there are some reasons for ISWA folkstyle state for hs kids like the triple crown, revenue and qualifying for folkstyle nationals.  But imop those aren't beneficial enough to keep us from starting freestyle immediately the week after IHSAA state.

If word gets out that kids that didn't go to two events are all of a sudden getting in, it will not be good for the ISWA. By my count the max number of wrestlers at state will be around 750 as we have had around 1500 in all the tournaments so far.

If we really want to grow Greco in Indiana, then ISWA should require wrestlers to attend 2 greco tournaments before they can wrestle at state.  If they do this then every kid that participates will place.  But seriously the numbers will be even lower this year bc all the kids that won't be at freestyle will definitely not be at greco.

i haven't miss one since 1977. in 2002 my wife was pregnant with our 5th child. The due date was  in 3 or 4 days but being a Mater Dei grad I could not miss Weinzapfel versus tshirts so I drove up Saturday morning and drove back Sat. night. The ironic thing is that weinzy is now my son-in-law. Didn't see that one coming.

To make a short story long my son is taking a medical redshirt year at Baldwin-Wallace U in Ohio. Due to the wonders of the internet I can watch his team's meet live online .On of the wrestlers Jesse Gunter is a returning D III All American. He is also blind. Now whether people like wrestling, the sport and its participants are usually highly respected particularly other athletes. Yet as tough as it is people of all weights and sizes can participate. Blind athletes can can compete and excel  on an equal level. Women can wrestle against men. A wrestler born without one leg can turn that into essentially an advantage and win a national championship. It is reasons like this that make me glad my son got involved with this wonderful sport and "dragged " me along into it.

I've had similar thoughts to this possibility. And I think it is the type of proposal that the IHSAA might actually consider.

An individual with a good relationship with the IHSAA has spent time explaining to them how 8 mats could be put on the floor of Bankers Life. That opens up the possibility of doubling the number of matches on Friday night in the same amount of time. 24 wrestlers per weight could be run in 2 rounds with the semi state champs and runners-up with a first round bye and 3 vs 6 (winner gets a 2) and 4 vs 5 (winner gets a 1). More wrestlers in the same amount of time means more money for the IHSAA.

For semistate, we ask to bring back the IHSAA's own idea of wrestling to 5th/6th from the quarter final losers. At most, this would add about an hour or none if semistates were doing the semifinals on only 2 mats. Just use the other 2 mats for the consolation semis and wrestle a third mat during the finals for 5th place. Heck, don't even get them ribbons - they're just happy to have the chance to qualify for state. Plus they get to earn team points which could have impacted at least 2 semistate championships this year.

The only snag I can see is Merrillville's gym because they wouldn't be able to break down to 2 mats to add more seating after the second round. But it could be used as a push to finally move that semistate to a bigger gym. Just propose it while the pink lady is on vacation or something.

Overall, I think it could be a great plan that is feasibly acceptable by the IHSAA. Just imagine how exciting semistate would be... You still get the same ticket round where you win and you qualify plus you get semifinals that are more meaningful to earn a bye at state and we all get another ticket round side-by-side with the semis. And it's all with very little time added to either Saturday.

Expanding would make this more of a "team" title. Instead of Perry, MD, Cathedral, Penn, Portage, etc . . . sending 6-7 a year, now most of these teams send 10-12 to determine title.

I like the idea in principal, but in practice what the ISWA just said is "No wrestler from northern Indiana will be allowed to wrestle at Freestyle or Greco State!"  Let me explain why.

There are only two FS/GR events in the northern half of Indiana this year.  Penn on March 28 and Iron Eagle (Huntington North) on April 18.  If a wrestler places 1st or 2nd at Middle School State in a couple weeks, then they qualify to wrestle on the ISWA Middle School duals team on March 28 at Danville, IL in the USA Wrestling Middle School Duals.  This means any kid on the MS ISWA team cannot go to Penn for FS/GR.

The ISWA 2 event qualifier will have the exact opposite impact then what they hope for.  It's going to decrease FS/GR participation even further.  Any wrestler from northern Indiana will essentially need to drive 2-3 hours to Indy on a couple separate occasions to get 2 FS tournaments.  Heck, even if you live in northern Indiana, Huntington can still be three hours from you.

This is simply totally impractical and will hurt us even more.  I hope the ISWA changes this swiftly.

It's interesting.  As I have talked with folks up north and down south, an opinion many have felt for years keeps coming up.  Namely, the ISWA is run like everybody in Indiana lives in the Indianapolis area.

Reread this thread.  Most of the people arguing for the 2 tournament qualifier are from Indy.  Most of the people who feel disadvantaged by the 2 tournament qualifier are from the northern or southern portions of the state.

Someone said 'come to the board meetings.'  Sure, if you live around Indy, that is a 25 minute drive.  If you live in Evansville or Elkhart, it's 3 hours one-way.  I understand that 50% of the population of our state lives within 60 minutes of Indy.  However, that also means 50% of the population lives 2-3 hours away.  It costs people from Evansville or Elkhart about $300-$400 per trip to Indy.

If I was to make any suggestion, it would be to broadcast the board meetings as a googlehangout.  It doesn't cost anything.  And it would give people outside Indy a chance to electronically raise their hand and offer input, so we don't end up in these situations where people in the north/south feel disadvantaged by those from the Indy area who don't seem to get it.

For those of you who live in and around Indy, imagine if the ISWA told you that you must drive and get a hotel in Evansville for folkstyle state, and come to Evansville for freestyle state, and then after you have spent all day at a Saturday Indianapolis high school tournament you need to drive to Evansville and back on a Sunday for a board meeting.  And btw, we have changed the rules about qualifying for freestyle state so you must travel down to Evansville at least 2 more times this year to get local qualifying tournaments.  And then when you voice concern about having to drive from your home in Indy to Evansville so many times and spend so much money, those responsible for creating the situation tell you the problem is that you don't participate enough and attend enough board meetings down in Evansville.  That would be quite an insulting way to treat you.
