Here’s some love for heavyweight Garrett Curtis. Just won a semi-state championship after placing 3rd at regionals and 4th at sectionals. Way to go Garrett!

Going over the stats the county stat guru @Indysportsfan has put together.
We lock in the rankings before the state tournament every year. 280 wrestler enter the state tournament ranked. Which at the time of sectionals is just recognition of their season. We do not and will not adjust them.   Not for injury or bad draws. Of 240 ranked wrestlers we lost 7 going on to semi state.
Thank you to everyone who has sent emails and messages. You are so important to the rankings.

So time to take a quick break and provide a distraction to the loaded regional and SS talk.
My son is new to the sport...it was a little over a year ago that he decided he wanted to give wrestling a try.  Something about watching kids under the lights at Bankers Life in 2015 provided that spark.  So as a 5th grader he started on his journey.
After a bit of research, we learned about Red Cobra and he’s been in that sweat box ever since...and most nights I’m also spending a few hours listening to Coach Red bark instructions to all the kids.
Now true confession time...I never wreslted myself and frankly thought wrestlers were an odd bunch growing up.  One dude I knew in Junior High covered his singlet in deer attractant as an “advantage”.   Another kid claimed to rub onions on his pits and “area”.  I was a basketball player and that was my love...I wasn’t tough enough to wrestle even though I considered myself a tough guy.  So needless to say, I knew next to nothing when my kid started and know just a tiny bit more now.
More recent confession, during our first few meets man some parents were going insane during a match while I just saw some kids leaning on each other.  My inner monologue said “dude, what’s those people’s issue?  They’re some real nut-jobs.”
Fast forward to today, and a solid year of Coach Red training has not only helped my kid but also his old man that’s been sweating profusely on the other side of the partition while Coach Red instructs like only he can.  What I didnt know is that I was getting C-Red Trained too.   Now I find myself automatically and instinctively barking stuff like “Get Your HEAD UP!!!” And “UP AND OUT!!!” Or “GET THAT TIGHT AND SQUUUEEEEZE!!!” Or “God gave you two hands SO USE THEM!!”  Its like I can’t control it.
So to all you parents before that I was secretly being real judgey towards in my head, because y’all were losing your minds (or so I thought)...my bad.
To all you beginner parents wondering why the big dude in purple is losing his mind in the future....you’ll get it one day.
One thing I’ve learned while my boy has really embraced and taken to this sport and the process...if you’re the parent of one of these high schoolers that’s putting it all out there in the coming weeks, then really be proud of it and where you are.  Make sure to take a moment and take it in.  Be proud they’re there regardless of outcome. Unlike any other, wrestling is an awesome sport that requires some real courage to even walk out there on that mat.  Sometimes it takes the eyes of a newbie to bring the obvious into focus.
Good luck to all competitors and teams as each step gets a little tougher.  I’m glad I’m here...and I’m glad my son has chosen to be a wrestler.

The last rankings were finished before the sectionals. We lock them before the tourney. I think we lost 2 ranked wrestlers in the first rd
1-Chase Wilson Princeton was in the bracket but withdrew. I still believe if healthy he makes a run
2-#11 Darrione Gregory Lawrence central had a tough road ahead from sectionals on. Move him in to some of the other sectionals and he could still be going.
Reminder the rankings are NOT my pick the champions or my picks for the state finals they are here to recognize great seasons for these athletes. That is my some semi states have up to 6 representatives.

Don't see Guhl @ 220 from Cathedral knocking off Mason Parris but I do think he could reach the finals if he's on and wrestles strategically

Trick question? ☺ That would violate the weight management plan. Neither seem healthier than the other. I get your point and it relates with mine. There are some athletes that need the lighter weight classes just like there are some between 250-285. Neither are a majority but both should have the opportunity to wrestle. No other sport teaches better life lessons and that's what I love about the sport.

On a side note last years State finals had
4 pins @  106 pounds             total points in other matches 147
3 pins @   113 pounds            total points in other matches 127
7 pins @   220 pounds            total points in other matches 137
5 pins @   285 pounds            total points in other matches 108

Looks to me like there is plenty of action maybe some people just like watching scrambles out of bounds that don't score.

If your naïveté results in inability to appreciate the fine art of heavyweight wrestling, it's your loss.  Some folks can discern and appreciate fine French wines and other drink Boone's Farm.

Just based off of the High School Football state finals between Ben Davis and Penn. There were Six starting lineman that were over the 285 pound mark and going to College. They are at
least in shape enough to play College Football.

The amount of moves that you can hit as a big guy is much more limited and the room for error is much smaller for big guys. It is much easier to get off your back when you have a 106lber on you than someone weighing 250lbs. Again the nuances of the sport between each end of the weight spectrum are what make this sport great. It's just like saying the linemen in football are just big fat ogres and we could do away with them.
Our weight classes are what make this sport so great, eliminating them at either end is a bad idea.

There is quality wrestling at every weight. If you fail to understand or see that you do not understand the sport very well. Heavyweight and 220 are two of the hardest weights to wrestle when you look at the body type and style difference amongst the athletes competing. Look at Robert Samuels and Rickie Clark, and try to prepare to wrestle those two and every other style and body type in between.
