  1. Posted on Website Page but wanted to drop it here for traffic. Hope it doesn't offend anyone for being in this section. The kids are working hard and this was a "reward" for what we are building. Still have gobs of pictures, handouts, video, etc. to add but you all get the idea. Also, stay tuned for live video feeds during matches. (Not sure anyone will check us out this year but cool to have nonetheless Watch out for those Golden Knights in a few years. You heard it here first!!!! Good luck this season, Indianamat.com!! Arlington Communtiy High School: www.goldenknightswrestling.com
  2. Thanks 119@88!!!! I know we are not alone but it is getting so close I can smell it! Best wishes again on the upcoming season, Indianamat.com!!!!!!
  3. With that being said, what would be some of the most notable Indiana wrestling families of all time, cousins, brothers, uncles, etc included? I can think of the McGinleys because it seems like there are 1,000 of them. The Maldanado's were tough in my day, as were the Carr's, Leavell's, Schaeffer's and Bradley's. Of course you have the Tsirtsis boys, Escobedo's, etc. I'm certain there are some "old school" names that wreaked havoc on opponents? I'd like to hear some older tales??????
  4. I'm not sure about anyone else but I dream about wrestling every night as it is the last thing on my mind when I am in bed. Thoughts of the team, individual wrestlers, eligibility, technique, and the overall direction of the program are just a few of the things that occupy my mind on a consistent basis - especially as the season approaches! Having the opportunity to build a program at Arlington, one of the WORST schools in the state in a variety of areas, has been extremely exciting because it is from the ground up. We have focused on changing the culture of the school, exploiting the aggression, and have worked to dispell the misconceptions. Seeing the transition take place on a daily basis from a school that currently had no concept of wrestling to a school that is beginning to embrace the sport is an awesome feeling. With that said, our knowledge of wrestling, participation and schedule have all enhanced. Our expectations are aligned between coaches, faculty, individual wrestlers and as a team. Our Booster Club is beginning to pump on all cylinders. We have a full line-up, a first since 1986, and even a JV team now. We have an in-house middle school program so I get the kids for 7 years rather than 4 now, which is huge because the overall athletic ability of our kids will help close the competitive gap much faster. Our kids our young but hungry, and we have a few that legitimately have a shot of competing downtown this year! Nevertheless, there is an excitement here at Arlington that I am privelaged to be a part of. The days of sub par wrestling in IPS is coming to an end. You heard it here first! Best wishes this season to all wrestlers and coaches! The time is almost upon us!!!! ;D
  5. This is an insult to me personally as I chose to coach in the public school system for the sole reason of helping them raise the bar in wrestling. I can see the argument in regards to other team sports, but wrestling is a different matter because it has a higher emphasis on individual performances. Very much a soft spot. Makes me want to go practice as we speak! Thankfully we're talking about Ohio.
  6. Amen! Another wrestling movie that looks like it'll be good! I saw Cena in there and got scared for a second but this should be a hit in the wrestling community. Just wondering, obviously you have "Vision Quest" and "Reversal", but what are some other wrestling movies out there? Great post, AJ!
  7. Pretty slick. I'm missing the mat right about now. Looking forward to the season.
  8. Wait. Wait. Wait. I didn't claim it as mine and that's why I put it in quotations. I should have put "Unkown" or something. Still, it's a great quote. I wasn't sure who said it at the time and I'm not so sure I'm closer to knowing but thanks for giving me some direction, Charles Kendall Francis Adams. Nevertheless, although I'm a little fuzzy on all the IHSAA State finalist this year, I look at the Fargo roster and I don't see all of the familiar faces I saw at Conseco. Although I'm just now starting to dig my heels back in to Indiana H.S. wrestling, at first glance it seems that there are so many regional and national tournaments Indiana is trying to fill rosters for, Fargo has unfortunately gotten watered down. I could be way off though. In my experience, it was almost a given that all of the State finalist wrestled at Fargo. In '95 for example, I recall we were loaded with most of Indiana's top wrestlers: Leavell, Cassidy, Deters, Hill, Brimm, Kerkhoff, and host of other 1x, 2x, and 3x state champions and state placers. Like I said, it was almost a given. Interestingly enough though, Indiana still only had a couple of AA's that year. I think the level of elite wrestlers coming out of Indiana has slowly but surely increased over time since then, however, with more Indiana wrestlers making legitimate strides at making a name for themselves nationally (Howe, Escobedo, Humphry, Tsirtsis, etc.) We're definately on the right track but we do have to make some adjustments in the upcoming years to raise the bar. I do know of others staes, like Illinois and Pennsylvania for example, that seem to have a higher quantity of successful collegiate wrestlers that coach at the high school level. I don't have time to do the numbers but, I bet if someone did, I wouldn't be surprised if there were some disparities. Maybe someone or some committee could analyze the issues that "The One" shed light on and I bet we'd find out some interesting trends. Either way, congratulations to Team Indiana for representing us as well as they did! Although we did not walk away with more medals, everyone got some good exposure and there will be some wrestlers who participated that will use this opportunity and be that much stronger next year.
  9. Actually, "The One" brought up some very good points. I do not believe he is selling our guys short but moreso bringing up valid issues that could/should be addressed when comparing Indiana with some of the other powerhouses, like the PAs, CAs, MIs, etc. We HAVE to continue to look at ways of advancing the state as a whole in order for Indiana to truly become a powerhouse in this sport or we will continue to stay right where we are. Working one's but off doesn't neccessarily guarantee success. There are other factors, like coaching, practice partners, local and national tournamnets, etc. that DO affect the success of developing an athlete or building a program - this is just on a bigger scale. I'm not here to offer solutions because I'm just now digging my heels in as a coach myself. I had a decent career when I was competing but, in regards to coaching, it's too early to tell how this chapter of my involvement with the sport will pan out. Either way, I do know this: "No person ever attains eminent success by simply doing what is required of them; it is the amount and excellence of what is over and above the required, that determines the greatness of ultimate distinction"

  11. Pretty good night tonight. Had some new faces, guys training for Fargo, some trying to get ready for the upcoming season, and others just wanting to have fun wrestling. Laid back atmosphere but going hard. Good stuff. Be sure to experience our RTC next week as the summer is coming to a close. Who knows - you may even learn something.
  12. That is hillarious. Very much the truth on all aspects. Fargo isn't the ideal vacation spot and, as the original post eluded to, this is a business trip. Where you have your fun at is competing against the best kids in the country and taking your place among the elite. If we 1) Fear no man, 2) Set the tone, 3) Be relentless and, 4) Wrestle to win, Indiana will be able to walk away not only with no regrets - but a lot of medals. Best of luck Team Indiana!!!!!!!

  14. IPS hosted its first ever Wrestling Champion's Camp at Arlington High School this week and today was the last day. As many of you know IPS is behind the curve in this sport but it was a great atmosphere as we had coaches and wrestlers from just about every school in the district and expectations were raised across the board. We were able to bring together most of the best and dedicated wrestlers in IPS under one roof to train, step our game up, and work on closing that gap. Not only did we cover the basics but spent a great deal of time on advanced wrestling in order to help us compete with the elite wrestlers of Indiana. Surprisingly, when everyone was brought together we actually had a pretty competitive room. There were a dozen wrestlers from outside the district that attended who also benefitted from a hungry room and add to the competition level. I personally would like to thank Coach Mendoza from Arsenal Tech, Coach Stewart from Manual, Coach Rickard from Northwest, Coach Sellers from Attucks, Coach V from Washington, and Coach Brown from Howe for all contributing and making it as successful as it was. Our wrestlers and coaches were able to sharpen each other, allowing us to build a tighter bond, as well as set some obtainable goals for next year. Great job IPS for investing more into this awesome sport and we look forward to a better season than the last!
  15. Regional Training Center @ Arlington this Wednesday @ 6 pm!!! Many wrestlers are not doing anything over the summer and the summer is where you make the biggest improvement from last season. Come fine-tune your game with other dedicated wrestlers working to improve and recieve some quality coaching tidbits while you're here. If you are in Indianapolis and want to get some mat time in before moratorium, this is one of the best places to be on Wednesday night!!! Arlington Community High School 4825 N. Arlington Avenue Indianapolis, IN 46200 The school is under construction so enter in the through the East Gym and the wrestling room is upstairs by the weight room. If you have any questions feel free to contact me at the information provided below. See you there!!! Coach Hull 317.474.3921
  16. Either way, Israel is the real deal to take over that program AND beat out the competition. He was a beast on the mat and his only loss was a DQ for a questionable slam. I know the family and they are all serious about their wrestling. Congrats to Martinez and best wishes.
  17. Thanks to all those who have been coming but unfortunately we have to cancel this week. Wrestle to win this weekend at Franklin if you are heading out there. If not, get your mat time in somewhere. Anywhere. Best wishes, wrestlers! See you next week!!!! - Coach Hull
  18. I heard somewhere that Wingler from New Pal is leaving?!?!? If so, that is too bad. He did an excellent job of taking that program from the trenches to being a contender. If this is true - best wishes, Coach Wingler, in all your future endeavors!

  20. Hello, Indianamat.com! I just want to thank Coach Tonte again for allowing me to be a clinician at last night's RTC at Perry Meridian. We have a great history between us and, with him at the helm, it is evident Perry Meridian will continue to be successful. Thanks to all of the wrestlers that were in attendance as everyone went hard. I was able to meet a variety of past, present and future studs from all over the region and look forward to your success. Many wrestlers, coaches, and parents asked me last night about our RTC at Arlington and I will reiterate here that we are just beginning. In no way does our room resemble Perry's room, or anyone else's room for that matter, because this is our first year and we are in the process of creating a new reputation. With that said, what we may lack in practice partners we make up in instruction, technique, and drive. The coach-to-wrestler ratio may also be a little higher than normal so you will receive closer individual guidance towards maximizing your potential. You will be a better wrestler when you leave. Again, our RTC practice is from 6 - 8 pm at Arlington Community High School, 4825 N. Arlington Avenue, Indianapolis, 46226. The school is essentially located between Cathedral H.S. and Lawrence Central H.S. Enter through door 16 by the East Gym and the wrestling room is located behind the weight room. For more information, please contact me at 317.474.3921. Best Regards. Coach Hull
  21. Indianamat.com - I just wanted to let everyone know more specifics on the Arlington RTC. It's still early but I know some are a little shy about training at an IPS RTC - and for good reason. However, this is MY 1st year here and I can assure you that you will recieve great instruction and our room goes hard - so fear not! I will be posting our clinician schedule soon and we will feature some of the best and brightest. In the meantime, here is brief overview of myself as I will be running our practices initially: 1x IHSAA State Champion 1x IHSAA Runner-Up 1x 7th place finish 1x NHSCA All-American 2x ISWA Freestyle State Champion 1x ISWA Greco-Roman State Champion 2x Southeast Regional Champion 1x FILA Junior All-American 2x NJCAA All-American 1x NJCAA National Champions 5th @ Junior World Team Trials 136-12 H.S. Arlington Community High School 4825 N. Arlintgon Avenue Indianapolis, IN 46226 Enter at Door # 16 by the East Gym entrance and you will see signs pointing to the wrestling room.
  22. I would definately say Antoine Neal from Lawrence North. I went to a rival school so we saw our fair share of LN. He was strong, quick, and had a low-single that was out of this world. Also, IMO the best wrestler never to win a state title - Mac Taylor from New Castle. Had national record for wins at 220+ - 6. He never got higher than 3rd. Good guy as well.
  23. Whenever there is a dual meet called USA vs. Pennsylvania - I would suggest PA is pretty tough. This was my thinking when I cam e out of H.S. I was ranked third in the country and had scholarship offers to a variety of Big 10 and Big 12 schools, but chose to wrestle in the EWL strictly because I was in Pennsylvania. The knowledge, connections and expertise that I accumulated while there is absolutely priceless. PA is the wrestling state for sure. I would say California is second, followed by other strong states such as FL, OK, IL, IA, MI, etc.
  24. 1.) I am an Indiana boy at heart but FL has a long tradition of producing some of the best high school wrestlers in the country, almost as much as they produce football players. I feel Florida's biggest problem is they don't have college wrestling so most either give the sport up, go outside of the state, or play football - all of which hinder the growth of wrestling in the state. One of the best high school programs in the country was ran by the late Coach McCoy at Homestead. R.I.P. to his son, Sean, who was a 6x national champ himself. Great friend that died to young. 2) I had the ability to not only wrestle successfully at the collegiate level but also coach at the collegiate level. The biggest issues I feel most H.S. wrestlers face at that next level, whether they were a regional qualifier or 3x state champ, is the discipline required to excel is more demanding, the pace is much faster, keeping one's head up on shots cannot go overlooked, and taking advantage of all re-shots and combos makes a huge difference. Obviously there are other issues but that's just my humble opinion. 3) Lastly, Mishawaka is definately a top 20 team nationally from what I've seen and they definately handled their business this year. Derek has done a great job of motivating and getting his athletes ready to compete since he has taken over the program. They're pretty solid from top to bottm. Still, there are some teams out there nationally that they would have trouble with I believe because of a longer tradition of producing winners, like Blairs Academy in NJ, Broken Arrow in OK, or Erie in PA. Still, that doesn't take away from them being state champions and whooping our team if we faced off. It is very true as well that the more Indiana wrestlers who compete in Freestyle and Greco, the better Indiana will become on the natinoal level.
  25. Coach Bobby Howard and I are great friends as we wrestled at Harper together for a few years. I still give him a hard time for having the fastest pin in the country at 3 seconds! lol. He has also told me great things about Coach Willman as well. It is evident their hard work at Lowell has been beneficial and this RTC will continue to not only help Lowell wrestling continue to grow, but Northern Indiana wrestling as well!
