The weather was awful this weekend! But the wrestling was great and from what I saw the reffing was spot on. I love the fact the windows for wrestling are always accurate and sometimes start early. Our homegrown elementary team qualified for day 3 and wrestled awesome. We bonded even more and got multiple compliments on how our kids supported each other. I love having one event a year our academy comes together and hangs out. There were a ton of Indiana coaches and wrestlers there. Keep up the good work everyone!

Posting pictures do not help at all. You need a slow motion video of about the last 5 seconds. From where I was sitting which was front row right in front of the mat, vanover had a Peterson locked up as time expired, therefore he has not lost control

MD's dominance was rooted in their feeder program.  From the 70's up through the early 2000's there was not a better model in the state.  Kids would start wrestling in Kindergarten and there was/is the huge family/tradition aspect that kept that going.  Every feeder school would field a full team and the coaches were dads that were MD wrestlers.

Now it has been surpassed by the academy model.  Kids are specializing and wrestling 365 days per year now and that has made a huge difference.  Those academy kids start matriculating to the same schools and before you know it you've got a powerhouse school that has a ton of resources.

Guys, I'm not an official, but try to imagine reffing that many matches a day. You will miss calls you will get calls wrong. Last week we had wrestle offs for my grade school team. We had 9 matches and I reffed every one of them. I made mistakes, I'm telling you that job is a whole lot harder than it looks. Those guys out there make it look EASY until they mis a call or make a call you disagree with. I understand the frustration but try it for yourself and see how you do. Go ask to ref a Folkstyle tournament, you will see that reffing from your butt with popcorn and soda is a whole lot different than being down there and trying to get in good positions to see AND know all the rules AND get it all right.

Man, Seng is good. Sat in the chair for that one and he is extremely difficult to score on. Best to Seng as he wrestles this weekend.

I know it wasn't a real rivalry, but Gibson Southern had as much respect and animosity towards MD in the mid - late 90's as anyone. We had top 20 teams and had to square off with them at team regionals in the middle of their hay day. My sophomore year, the instructions were to not get pinned. I ended up on the front page of the Evansville Courier Sports page being teched by Van Ness. I then witnessed the best wrestler I had ever seen (Greg Schaefer) tech our 112. We did our part with no pins, but obviously fell well short of the upset. The next year we inched closer, but still fell short in the regional finals. I lost a decision to Todich that year. MD was always so technically sound, no mistakes. I took it as stalling at the time, but they were all well trained wrestlers. They were the standard, and beating one of their wrestlers would have been the pinnacle for me. I never got the chance my senior year. I agreed with the MD vs Indiana post made earlier. Everyone was gunning for them back in the day.

I think you are pretty close here but I don't think Alfano advances to semi state at 160 let alone make the final. All 4 from Central at 160 to the Ford Center. At 182 I think you'll see Johnson or Schapker in the final.

    MD / Central....
The BIG one I believe in in '93 at MD was absolutely insane. Hook tells the story quite well but as a Sophomore wrestling JV in front of a packed house it still sends chills down my back, I have goose bumps typing this. I can't remember who took the mat first but I can remember taking a warmup lap atound the mat, the sound was deafening. As we ran past the central crowd there was a small contingent of former MD wrestlers front and center on the visitor's side. All the old MD guys had their old gold warmup shirts on and you could feel the boos from the Central crowd along with the cheering section right at matside.

I realize this is JV we are talking about but it was wrestling heaven! MD JV won the match handily, we had one guy lose and he was dejected. I felt sorry for him but proud that we won.

The hard part after the match was that we didn't have a seat to sit in after the JV match. We tried sitting in the isle but the athletic director told us we couldn't do that either so it was standing room only for us little JV guys! Good times! That rivalry has since died down a bit but those memories will last a long time that was a migical year for a Mater Dei team that wasn't supposed to do much!
