  1. There is 1 Mr. Basketball. 1 Indiana All-star team. 1 Mr. Baseball. 1 Mr. Football. And those are team sports. I have no problem with classed team sports. I still feel individual sports do not need classes. I'm pretty sure everyone has stubborn beliefs on whether it's good or bad for the state. I don't see either side changing their points of view on this.
  2. Wouldn't you also have to factor in the number of students in the larger schools based on the number of students in the smaller schools? Of course a Ben Davis is going to have more chances to get a kid at state than, say, a Tri High. The numbers are self explanitory. That doesn't mean a Tri High kid can't work his butt off, and be one of the 5% to be a state placer. If everyone is competing for the same title - and that's the draw of the sport, why would you want to give a kid who isn't as good, as say a regional qualifier in the big class, a state title in a small class. Or, vice versa, you have a state champion in the small class that could have done the same in the big class, but under the new system doesn't get a chance.
  3. I personally hate the idea of classing any individual sport. The size of the school, in my opinion, has little to do with results in individual sports. Blue River, one of the smallest schools in the state, had a gymnastics state champion. Most of the individuals that compete at the elite level aren't just working with their school team anyway. They train elsewhere and make sure they are challenged by going to national tournaments, etc. There is no need to change a system that provides such an awesome championship event. I would probably never go to a small class state final, but I'd root like heck for a kid from a smaller school to upset maybe a favorite from a bigger school. Also, just because a school may have large enrollment doesn't mean it has a large program. Many of the larger schools in the state still have trouble fielding a full 14 man roster. And of course, you have a wrestler who might be the best in the state, and he has to compete in the smaller class and he will always wonder if he could have been the true champion. Classing a team sport is great, but not an individual sport. Don't ruin something that works well already. There are certainly better ways to promote the sport - if that's the idea. Call and complain to local newspapers about coverage of wrestling. Talk to people in your town and encourage them to go to a match and support your local school. Once the sport starts getting deserved publicity, and a fan base, competitors will fall in love with it and want to give it a try. My two cents worth
  4. I don't see Bane at 145. Will he be better in time for sectional? Hope he's OK. Not sure what's wrong, I think I read something on here about an ankle injury.
  5. I can't see the brackets. Says they haven't been released to the public yet. Any idea when they will be available?
  6. Interesting that this comes up. My son was wrestling at Madison and was losing a match to a kid that was better than my son. The other kid was in control, but pulled my son on top of him. My son's face was looking upward at the lights, but he was directly on top of the wrestler in control, who had both of his shoulders on the mat for about five seconds. I said something out loud, but not so loud the officials could hear it, about that being a defensive pin. A fan from the other team just started yelling at me, telling me I know nothing about wrestling and there is no such thing as a defensive pin. Glad to see I had half an idea, at least.
  7. INDIANAPOLIS - New Castle's Brenden Campbell was a broken man Saturday night. His dream of one day winning a wrestling state championship had just been torn apart in a grueling, yet thrilling showdown under a lone spotlight at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. After the match Campbell couldn't eat. He couldn't take a drink. He could barely talk. His body was aching, but his heart was where the true pain lied. Winning a state championship wasn't just a whimsical goal for Campbell. It was his mission. It was the reason he got up before school to run, and then stayed in the gym long hours after wrestling practice was over, still conditioning his body. The rest of the article can be found on the New Castle Courier-Times' website. Below is the link. http://www.thecouriertimes.com/main.asp?SectionID=4&SubSectionID=51&ArticleID=270682
  8. I completely agree. I did not wrestle in school, and didn't even really know about the sport until my sons got started in it. But without a doubt the wrestling state finals are the best, most electric finals in any sport. I have been to literally every other sports championship, and nothing even remotely compares. This should be televised.
  9. I don't know Abraham at all, but I was pulling for him to win. His dad was so excited for his matches down by the mat that it made it fun to watch him. Also, he was an undersized heavy. And it was refreshing to see a heavy that can do a single leg takedown. Congrats Abraham, awesome performance.
  10. I completely agree with you on this one. Campbell has been an awesome high school wrestler. He was undefeated his freshman year, placed third as a sophomore and runner-up as a junior and senior. That loss was heartbreaking for a Campbell fan, but Petrov was a very gracious and humble champion. Those two guys put on the best show I've seen under the lights in years. What a final. Congrats to both Brenden and Paul. That match alone was worth the price of admission, the $7 mini pizza and the $12 parking.
  11. I'm not really sure why you say that Welch vs. Campbell won't be close, and say Welch will win. But then say Todd will beat Welch. Campbell lost by one point to Todd, then lost another close match to him in the semistate. A lot of people are counting Campbell out, but he has wrestled and beat some great Indiana grapplers. He has beaten Todd more than once in high school. He has beaten McKinley and Harvey too, and they are both ranked No. 1 in other weight classes. He also was just seconds away from beating Ayersman last year in the finals. I'm not sure why people act like he won't stand a chance.
  12. I'm looking forward to 120. There are 15 wrestlers out of the 16 member field ranked in the top 20 (good job rankings guy), and there are three undefeated wrestlers in the group. There is also a state champion and a state runner-up in the mix. Should be dynamic from Friday through Saturday night.
  13. James "Bubba" Dickerson pinned everyone he wrestled at state in the first period (despite placing second in semistate). Has anyone else ever done that? I believe Bubba did it in 1995.
  14. Are you kidding me? He placed third in the state last season. He barely lost Saturday at New Castle, in what was a pretty questionable decision really. I don't see where everyone is dogging Phillips' ability. Is two state championships, a third and a two-loss season horrible? Also, he wasn't the only wrestler at New Castle to forfeit a match. Didn't Gino Gillum do the same thing against Connor Mullins after winning his ticket round match? Also, I have watched Phillips' last three losses. Each time he graciously shakes his opponents hands, the other coach's hands and then quietly walks off the mat. There have not been any tantrums in the public eye. Last year at this time people were talking about how classy he was in defeat, and now everyone is ripping him as if he is a poor sport. I just don't get all the critism.
  15. I thought the call for Phillips fleeing the mat was absolutely correct, but I don't know how they just let LeCount run around for the last 10 seconds of the match with no call at all. For those of you who saw it, there was no question, he was literally running around in circles to avoid any contact. That was cheap, and a bad way to end a good match.
  16. What was the score of the Willis vs. Decker match and when did they wrestle?
  17. That was sweet. Thanks for the video.
  18. I'm sure a lot of newspapers covered the tournament and gave it more publicity than the Indy Star. I think wrestling is starting to get a little more credit these days. Maybe that's just me.
  19. I'm sure this has probably been said somewhere...but here is my breakdown on how the rankings worked out. At 103 pounds Final four = No. 6 Fuqua, No. 2 Boosma, No. 1 Boston, No. 4 Micic. Champion ? No. 1 Boston 112 Final four = No. 1 Phillips, No. 2 Todd, No. 3 Petrov, No. 4 Brooks Champion ? No. 2 Todd 119 Final four = No. 1 Ayersman, No. 2 Campbell, No. 8 Moss, No. 9 Carroll Champion ? No. 1 Ayersman 125 Final Four = No. 1 McKinley, No. 2 Kieffer, No. 4 Somer, No. 8 Crume Champion ? No. 1 McKinley 130 Final Four = No. 2 Barroquillo, No. 3 Molloy, No. 6 Crume, No. 20 Hartman Champion ? No. 3 Molloy 135 Final Four = No. 1 Jackson, No. 2 Kieffer, No. 3 Raley, No. 4 Gregory Champion ? No. 1 Welch 171 Final Four = No. 1 Stein, No. 2 Bratcher, No. 3 Lynde, No. 6 Manning Champion ? No. 1 Stein 189 Final Four = No. 1 Sliga, No. 2 Stevenson, No. 4 Goldman, No. 6 Boots Champion ? No. 4 Goldman 215 Final Four ? No. 14 Cooper, No. 3 Kral, No. 1 Reese, No. 10 Seaman Champion ? No. 1 Reese 285 Final Four = No. 1 Meyer, No. 7 Harvey, No. 8 Forrest, No. 2 Howe Champion ? No. 7 Harvey Totals - every wrestler in all 14 weight classes that made the final four were ranked. Nine wrestlers ranked No. 1 won. I think the rankings were more accurate this year than perhaps ever before.
  20. I didn't say this first because I thought maybe I missed something. But did Welch make one offensive move in the final? Mullins tried a few unsuccessful shots and one throw that was out of bounds. I don't recall Welch making a single move. I might be wrong, but I watched pretty closely. Tsirtsis was outstanding, but four pins is a rare feet. I'd give the award to Reese. I was also amazed at how good Molloy was. He was a takedown machine.
  21. Brenden wrestled so well. It's almost tragic that he didn't win. But that's wrestling. Ayersman stepped up at the very end. New Castle should be very, very proud of both him and Connor. I don't know if the average person can understand how incredible it is for a school to have not only one, but two wrestlers advance to that level.
  22. I sat right in front of Alex Tsirtsis while Jason was wrestling in the championship. Alex was yelling instructions out to Jason that were extremely informative. Then, right after Jason won, Jason stood there giving Roach instructions. Alex and Jason sounded exactly alike. That family knows their wrestling.
  23. Just an observation, but Yorktown's Chandler Carroll looked great today. He's just a freshman and I think great things are in store for him.
  24. The Journey is awesome. But I think I'll be spending my time at Buffalo Wild Wings. Last year it was a popular hangout during the breaks.
  25. An editorial about this situation is on the New Castle newspaper's website. I posted the article in the "articles of interest" section on here too.
