  1. The additional data here is really helpful. I've been less involved and simply following as a passive fan for the last 10 years or so. I agree that the data that both of you have shared paint a fairly bleak picture. It obviously looks like participation is down in all sports and the different time periods make it a bit difficult to truly compare, but the data does suggest wrestling has been more adversely impacted than others. At the end of the day, I would hate to see the sport in our state to ever be at risk. I get it. Having been at a small school, there is a double-edged sword that those programs are fighting. On one side, in order to get kids further in the tourney, you likely need to get them the best competition that you can. But, when you do that, you run the risk of having several wrestlers take a whole lot of lumps and likely become disinterested pretty easily. Perhaps it is time or near time to make a change. Maybe the freshman/sophomore state will help. I can see how the pageantry of our state tournament would be a needed element of a classed tourney, because let's be real, the product is something to be proud of and I believe it to be one of the coolest experiences a high school kid could have.
  2. To this point, (at least on this thread) there hasn't been any data shared that merits a serious justification for classing the sport. One argument was asking "how many programs do we have to lose," but then we've had little fluctuation in program count for the past ~15 years. The data regarding number of forfeits (which I agree appear to be up) would be more compelling. Even if that data screams that there is a participation problem, that's still simply a correlation without any measure of causal effect. Sure participation is lower but maybe class wrestling would help, maybe it wouldn't. Is there data from other states who have made the switch and seen their numbers rise? Even if the total number of wrestlers is down, seems to me that there would need to be larger analysis to include other sports. Perhaps participation is down in all sports. Is there a strong deviation in wrestling where numbers are down more than other sports? Maybe, maybe not. Now, leaving objectivity aside, I went to a 1A high school. I was a good wrestling at my high school but average when compared to the broader state perspective. Sure it would have been great to have made a deeper run in a classed tournament. I watched kids who made it to state in Ohio who I knew weren't as good. I got over it. Understood the dynamics and moved on. I like the charm of our state tournament and having one champ in each weight class. That said, if we would like to consider moving to a classed system in our sport, it's going to take an much more objective approach to quantifying the problem (if there is one) and identifying that class wrestling would, in fact, help solve that problem.
  3. Any word on when the doors open tomorrow morning?
  4. Excellent information. The only thing that I cannot find is what time the doors open today and tomorrow morning. Any idea?
  5. Anyone know? All I could find on the IHSAA and Banker's Life FH websites were the starting times.
  6. Does anyone know what time they are going to open the doors Friday? Then what time they will begin letting people in to start the mad dash for seat saving to begin? None of this information is on the IHSAA website right now. Thanks!
  7. All scales are technically a force plate that measures the amount of force put down upon it by the object being weighed. The amount of force produced in the downward direction from the object on the scale is a function of that persons mass and gravity. That said, gravity is a constant, and the persons mass is also a constant for a given period of time (the few seconds it would be between stepping off the scale and getting back on), therefore their weight should remain unchanged regardless of position. Having said that and having weighed in several times, I know that most scales have what we would call a "sweet spot". I can't explain this, but it is likely a function of the location of the scales sensors. In these sweet spots, you could typically get a +/- 0.1 - 0.2 pounds depending on the scale. The most likely reason for a person weighing less while standing on their hands is most likely attributable to their position on the scale and the sweet spots of that scale. Just my 2 cents.
  8. I'm not knocking Union City. I am sure that I am pulling for them as much as anybody seeing how that is where I wrestled. I think that they have very good potential and are a good dual meet team. What holds me back on saying they will win the TEC are a couple of things. First of all, the TEC is no longer relying on the dual season as determining a share of the title. This means that only the tournament matters. I don't see too many TEC champion caliber wrestlers on this years team (I could be wrong, and hope that I am proven wrong). It will be very, very difficult to win the TEC without champions. That said, they will need to place top 3 in most weight classes. I just don't think that they are there yet. They are not what someone who knows the sport as a strong tournament team. My second drawback drives the first. While not all of the TEC teams have strong dual meet teams, many of them have the possibility of having multiple champions. Union County looks to be the best tournament team to me with several guys that will be favored to win championships. They will be hard for anyone else to beat.
  9. Walters gave it a go in his first match of the day. He didn't look good and lost a tough one to the kid from Daleville. He left after that match to go to the hospital to get looked at.
  10. Union City hosted a 6-way today. They went 5-0, but the competition wasn't very stiff. Union City might have been the only team with a full team.
  11. The one instance that comes to mind to me is the "humiliation" factor. A team may have a kid in a varsity spot, that on most teams would be on the JV squad. If you have such a kid that is taking several losses already, it can be a good idea to sit him against a high caliber wrestler to avoid destroying the kid's self-esteem. I know this is wrestling, and I value wrestling better competition as much as anyone, but this can be the reason some coaches sit kids that are simply out of their league. Just something that I have seen before.
  12. 103: #6 Schmith BG and #9 Cottey PM 130: #13 Roberts BG and #16 Bova PM 145: #5 Riedling WC and #15 Dodson PM 171: #10 Robinson BN and #15 Marlin JEFF 189: #7 Goldman BN and #12 Richards PM 215: #6 Cooper PM and #14 Pratt JEFF 285: #5 White WC, #10 Decker BG and #11 Naughten PM These are all of the weight classes with more than one kid in the current pre-season rankings. Every weight class but one has a ranked wrestler. Should be a good tournament, it always is!
  13. Thanks for posting MattM!! Helluva foot sweep to win that match by Raley!
  14. The following are the IHSAA's "Suggested" Procedures for Seeding Wrestlers at Sectionals. Consideration for determining seeded wrestlers is given in order of importance: a. Head to head competition; (The wrestler with the most head to head wins gets the seed. If they have beaten each other an equal number of times, then the winner of the last match gets the seed.); b. Record against common opponents; c. A returning champion or runner-up in the same weight class; d. A contestant with the best overall record (winning percentage) who has wrestled at least 10 matches; NOTE: A wrestler with less than ten matches may not be seeded ahead of a wrestler with at least ten matches and a winning record unless he/she meets criteria in a, b or c. A wrestler with a losing record may not be seeded unless he/she meets criteria a, b or c unless there are less than six (6) wrestlers in the bracket. This does not make mention of a "Vote by the Coaches" being able to be used to seed. I am not personally saying that there isn't some value in the voting, but these criteria rule out most discrepencies. I understand the whole "Wrestler A doesn't wrestle the schedule at Wrestler B does" argument, but at the same time I'm sure that Wrestler A could lose to the same people Wrestler B has lost to!!! Use the criteria and let the wrestling do the talking. That said, Blake's comments are pretty ignorant.
