While I would absolutely love the single point of contact for inbounds, it can create madness for us refs due to majority of high school mats being smaller (on the outside) than college mats. I won't complain if they make that change as the current out of bounds rules are insane right now.
They just need to clarify what a "point of contact" is, instead of making it more complicated than brain surgery.

Ft.Wayne native and Indiana St. alum David Eric Doster played baseball at New Haven High School and Indiana State University before playing 13 seasons of professional baseball. He mostly played at the AAA level but also parts of two seasons at the major league level as well as playing some in the Japanese and Mexican leagues. May be a stretch to list him above Larry Bird, Bruce Baumgartner, and Kurt Thomas though.
Until I get an autographed Larry Bird card, Doster is ahead of him.

As they said (not seriously) in the video, Virginia should be top tier because they have more state champions than anyone. It almost makes sense until you actually think about it.
That was sarcasm, Pyle is from Virginia and coached there.

Ugh, it is two weeks til tax day, I don't think I have the energy for this right now.....
But I looked it up anyway, and my gosh their websites and state brackets stress me out. Even if they had a GeorgiaMat it would be hell figuring that system out. Still can't figure out what the order is from biggest to smallest. Caleb Henson was 5A, which helps me none.
Either way, 7 is way too many divisions. Georgia had 1246 state qualifiers this year! That's insane! I just want two classes, or more qualifiers with wrestlebacks.
Georgia, Arizona, and Virginia love having as many classes as possible. I can't even imagine trying to rank seven classes of wrestling, that would be a disaster.

Forgot Iowa. They're the #1 per capita producer of top-level talent, despite the small numbers. California is second-tier in per capita talent, but the sheer numbers are big. Colorado and Florida are in the second tier discussion too despite not being in the wrestling belt, and Nebraska is top 10 in per capita talent.
Iowa definitely in the second tier. Colorado, Nebraska, and Florida are on the back end of tier 2 or the top of tier 3, they aren't consistent enough to be considered in tier 2.
We aren't doing the per capita stuff though. Per capita is the way Iowa justifies being relevant.
-
The top tier(in somewhat order)
Pennsylvania
OhioCalifornia
New Jersey
IllinoisSecond tier(not too much order)
Wisconsin
Michigan
Minnesota
Indiana
Oklahoma
Missouri
New York
Georgia(sneaking up there)Look at NCAA qualifiers and All-Americans, Junior/16U/14U Duals results, Super 32 results, etc and you'll see most of these states in the mix. The second tier has good runs, then small lulls at times.
20 minutes ago, Mattyb said:I would put Michigan behind us, but not that far. They got dudes in high school and great college wrestling.
Recently Indiana has been better than Michigan, but over the course of 10-15 years Michigan is slightly ahead.
-
That's correct, there is a clear cut separation from the top five or six states and Indiana along with the other second tier states.

Congratulations to Chase Leech Congratulations to from Garrett for signing with Indiana. Projected to wrestle 165, 174.

Congratulations to Adrian Origel Congratulations to from North Newton for signing with Indianapolis. Projected to wrestle 125, 133.

So this year's state tournament was "fine" and you are no less a state champ, placer, or qualifier if you went to this one than if it was held at indy or somewhere else.
However blindly acting like it was all sunshine and roses is silly.
Evansville as a city did great. Most people found criticism with the IHSAA leadership. They could have moved the state tournament. Do it the same time as swimming. Ncaa does it all the time especially at the D2 level. It's a great atmosphere. . . It's also cheaper for most schools. 1bus, better hotel rates, AD only has to be in one place. Communities love it.
Ihsaa leadership wanted to be at all the state events. Even came out and stated travel to and from the different sites on competition day was not something they were interested in doing.
I think some of you would feel differently if your loved one was competing in this tournament for possibly their first and/or only time. Easy to blow off poor planing and tickets problems if you already have a "hookup" or you don't mind spending $102 on tickets.
moving wrestling was the path of least resistance. Wrestling is a second class citizen in Indiana. It probably won't change until we get a "wrestling guy" on the ihsaa staff.
So was this year's state tournament perfect? ? ? No... is it time to move on?
Definitely
Ps. Shout out to this 2024 class,
Guys like May, Leavell, Ison, and Myers only got one "normal" year
2021- no fans present
2022- split parade of champions
2023- Normal year****
2024 moved tournament
If they move the weekend then you also have to try to get venues like the coliseum or Ford Center for a different date. On top of that moving the season to one less week would cause lots of other scheduling issues with 300+ schools. Do you understand what kind of undertaking that would be for the season? Do you think 300+ athletic directors want to fix their wrestling schedules for one off year?
Keeping the date and moving the event was the most logical and easiest thing to do with the season.

The way I saw some kids eat at Evansville, they would have made more money in wrestling than they would have made in ticket sales for 4 games for girls. Plus more tickets being sold to the northern as well. Their loss on knowing the wrestling community!
Good luck with the backlash of moving the girls finals.

They had the girls basketball state finals the week after wrestling.
