Wow. I really assumed he would have one more final year left in him with having a decent team and bringing in Colman Scott already to help with guiding the program. Heck of a career for him as both a competitor and coach.

  5. Wrestlers from all over will converge upon State College, Pennsylvania Friday and Saturday for one of 18 coveted spots on the Olympic team. Seven wrestlers with Indiana ties will look to call themselves Olympians after the dust settles on Saturday evening. Men's Freestyle At 65kg there are two entries from Indiana in Nick Lee and Jesse Mendez. Lee is coming in as the top seed, while Mendez is the 11th seed. This weight is not qualified for the Olympics yet, so the winner here will go to Turkey with hopes of getting a qualifying spot. Lee won the spot last year and wrestled at Worlds, but did not qualify the spot. He potentially see Penn State teammate Beau Bartlett or 2023 NCAA champ Andrew Alirez to make the best of three finals. Moving up to 97kg we will see Christian Carroll attempt to make the team. He qualified at the Last Chance Qualifier a couple weeks ago and slots in as the 9th seed. He will have Iowa's Anthony Cassioppi in the first round with the winner getting former Olympic medalist J'den Cox in the quarters. At heavyweight Mason Parris will sit out until the finals on Saturday. He will away the challenge tournament winner in a best of three series due to winning a bronze medal at last year's world championships. It will be very fitting to see Parris in Paris this summer. Women's Freestyle Three wrestlers will look to earn spots on the team in Women's Freestyle. All of the women's weights are qualified for the Olympics which means winning here will get you a trip to Paris. At 50kg the Queen of Granger Sarah Hildebrandt will be sitting out until Saturday's best of three finals. She has medaled multiple times on the world stage and looks to make her second Olympic team. Kayla Miracle will be in the best of three series at 62kg awaiting the winner of the challenge tournament. She was an Olympian in 2021 and qualified the weight again for the Olympics at the Pan Am qualifier. Lastly, Yorktown's Alara Boyd will look to earn a spot at 68kg. She comes in as the 5th seed in the challenge tournament. She has multiple world medals and will be a threat to make the best of three series against Amit Elor. 6. Since this new area is becoming a booming wrestling section of the state I have decided to take a visit to the Caprino @Y2CJ41 home on Sat for an "un-official" visit for a potential landing spot for a future hammer. Reporting no names but this kid has been previously Frepan/Seymour trained

  7. In an individual sport, an individual must stand a top the podium to be the best. In team sports, an individual can clearly be the best individual but not win team championships because of a lack of supporting cast members. When it comes to the GOAT, even in team sports, individuals will be judged in the end by titles. But the lack of titles does not eliminate them from the discussion. In individual sports it absolutely does - IMO.

  8. Team sports vs individual sports are very different. If you aren't winning titles eventually as an individual, you're losing matches and can't be considered the best. In team sports, you could lose games but still be clearly the best individual. I do agree that being a 4-timer or being undefeated for a career is overrated. Mason Parris losing a match as a freshman at a big guy weight or Howe losing early to a fellow all-timer shouldn't mean anything when compared to 4-timers that were at low weights and/or didn't face royalty as freshmen.

  12. Like Matt said, I figured OSU had a succession plan with Coleman Scott, who really elevated North Carolina during his tenure there. Those are some massive shoes to fill for Scott. Smith has always been one of my favorite figures in NCAA wrestling and I will miss his scowls matside. He often has a big presence at World Team and Olympic Team Trials and I'm sure this week will be no different.

  13. unknown Andrew, what’s so wrong about posting notable results? We have parents who post when their kid commits to what high school they decide to go to and that seems totally acceptable. What’s wrong with posting a kid who had a good weekend?

  21. And there is also not a set number of state qualifiers. If you are 5th in your regional but run/jump or throw "state standard" you advance to state also. One athlete can also compete in 4 events, not just 1 weight class.

I think we now have some clarity for the Olympics team 86 - If Hassan recovers, he goes If not, and if Ghassempour can make weight, he will go If not, then Vaffaie goes, no medal for Iran 97 If Azarpira qualifies, then he will go if not, no one goes Iran so far has only qualified for 65, 86, and 120. I think Iran will most likely qualify for 74 and 97, It would be nice to qualify for 57 just to gain experience, no chance of medal

The undecided weights are 86 Kg and 97 Kg For 86, they are waiting to see how Yazdani recovers from major surgery. If he recovers well, it's him, if not, it will probably be a wrestle off between Ghassempour and Hadi Vaffaeipour. In 97, I expect it to be Azarpira, now that Mohammadian lost to the Bahraini/Russian world championship. If Yazdani does not recover well, and if Ghassempour can make weight at 86, I personally expect it to be Ghassempour. Ghassempour vs Taylor would be a match of the Olympics.

    OTT Last Chance Qualifier

I'm no expert & am in no way close to the situation. But looking at it from a far, 17 pounds is a lot of weight to shed & keep off for an entire college wrestling season for someone built like Christian Carroll. I would suspect he is already on a pretty strict diet just to be at 97 kg, but again I have no real insight except that he wrestled 220 as a junior in HS. Cutting that kind of weight & being competitive at the college level can be extremely difficult. Mendez is a good example. He was a completely different animal this year at 141 vs 133 his freshman season. He was much more powerful this year. Chrisian is a perfect example of why college wrestling needs a weight class between 197 & HWT. And with the recent development of the competitors in the HWT class in college, it is only getting tougher for guys who are at their best around 210-220 pounds. I'm not actually suggesting adding a weight class to college but just restructuring the classes to: 125 133 141 150 160 172 184 197 215 HWT It more closely follows the international weight classes to boot.
