  1. The Evansville Central Sectional—long considered as one of the toughest in the State—seems to be a bit down in 2021. That being said, do not forget it is populated by the 4A team champions, Mater Dei, and soon-to-be-perennial powerhouse, North Posey. Following one of the weirdest years in Grandmother’s history, wrestling follows suit. Consider that North Posey declined to complete for a PAC championship, while Mater Dei won the SIAC title—with 13 JV wrestlers. At any rate, the Central sectional still promises much excitement, fireworks…and some upsets. Mater Dei has

  2. Next year's Team State will tentatively be held on January 8, 2022. (January 1 is a Saturday.) Several changes will be mentioned in the Team State selection procedures document that will be out later this week. These are primarily being put in place to offset some of the impact that covid will have on teams' qualifying scores: 1. In 3A and 4A, exactly 6 of the 8 bids will be via automatic qualification, rather than 6 or 7. (Best 3 semi-state highest scores, 2 highest remaining scores as wildcards, then either the 4th semi-state "winner" if they are in the top 10 overall

  3. Luke tore his ACL December 29th at Martinsville. Will have surgery next Wednesday. But he's only 15, so no urgency. He's got a great attitude and is already focused on a recovery!

  4. Great preview, always look forward to reading them. Mater Dei runs away with this, they probably could win it with their JV team. North Posey is no where close to being on the same radar as MD, but it’ll be an interesting race for 2nd between the Posey County rivals NP and MV, and I’ll even throw North into the mix. Should be a great day of wrestling, thankful the kids still have the opportunity to compete! Good luck to all!

  7. So... 20 people people out of 1,400 that attended were diagnosed as positive after this event. That is less than 2% that attended. Per the WHO, a 5% positivity rate is the "too high" threshold. So... is fake news.... I mean.... CNN saying that they did a good job? Not sure what this story means? I guess it means that these folks did a crappy job wearing mask, and still had an infection rate below 2%. With that said... I think if we do a good job masking up, we can even cut that number way down!!! Am I wrong? Shouldn't the headlines say.. "Infected people attended an ev

It appears the IHSAA is leaning towards two sessions on Friday night with the lower weights starting at noon and the upper weights at 7 p.m. Mr. Faulkens is expected to come on our show again either this week or next with more details

  10. I just seen on the news tonight that whoever is in charge of Bankers Life is going to open up the balcony for more seats for Pacer games. So why not for IHSAA Wrestling State Finals.

  12. I don't disagree with you however when affiliated with a high school you have to account for supervision when it comes to students especially of they're traveling with the team. Its one thing for a student coming on there own as a spectator. But most school are going to expect some form of supervision for those competing.

This is why Edgewood intends on qualifying their entire team for day 2; to ensure we have a giant section of fans for our team.

  14. I wish the sport of wrestling would come up with a way to mitigate the risk of potential mis-seeding or unfortunate random draws. Something that would allow a wrestler who lost early in the tournament to come back and place high enough to advance to the next round of the tournament. It would be particularly helpful for losers of the quarterfinal round of regional and semi-state. It could have a catchy name, too

  15. There is no way that we can’t social distance 224 wrestlers, about 200 coaches, 100 workers and refs and 1,000 fans at bankers life. Mask up, respect each other’s space, and make it work. How is anybody questioning if this can happen? We all know that we have wrestling going on in smaller venues with a smaller space to people ratio. Why is it ok to have a middle school 8 way dual in a single middle school gym with two fans per wrestler and not state in a massive venue with tons of space? There is no conformity. This is many peoples frustration. I can

    Imagine if..

The MAC is an awesome conference. We all know that my son chose that route. He’s left my house a week after graduation and hasn’t looked back. He has not asked me for a dime. He’s proud that’s he earned his own way (between wrestling and academic money). He’s got a shot at being a five year D1 starter and is on the deans list. He’s there with 3 other kids that he grew up with too. He has been fortunate and it appears that he chose a great fit for him. But.. there is no right or wrong answer. It all comes down to what works for the kid. No two situations will ever be the same.

  17. As long as their is a state finals we all are good. If they decide to limit spectators, multiple sessions or whatever they decide to do is okay in my opinion as long as the kids can have their state tournament. As a fan of the sport I am willing to give up my attendance and just pay for it on track or whatever stream they decide to go with. At the end of they day this is about the kids not us parents, friends, and coaches. The ihsaa has done an awesome job this season and I trust them not to let us down.

  18. I think this is also important. Coaches need to keep an open mind. Yes we all want our wrestlers to advance the furthest they possibly can, but we also need to be realistic. I think my point can be proven years ago when one of the Keiffer brothers and Brandon Wright were the #2 and #3 seeds because the #1 was the returning sectional champion in that weight class. I don't think you can argue strength of schedule because it is not the kids fault that they wrestle who they wrestle.I'm sure we all know of kids who come in with stellar records and higher seeds and then lose early in the tournament

  19. Per the rules "the main objective of seeding is to have outstanding wrestlers separated in the brackets so that they will not meet each other until the finals." I think that the rule writers assume that a wrestler who was on the cusp of making it to the state meet the previous year defines you as an outstanding wrestler. 10 matches qualifies you to be seeded, thus that is the 1st question. Next is head to head competition followed by common opponents. So if a returning semi-state quarterfinalist has lost to someone else in the sectional or has a worse record vs common opponents, he/she w

  20. Maybe his weight loss plan didn't allow him to make scratch at 145 until this late in the season, and if he couldn't beat his teammate at 152, he would have to bump to 160 to make the lineup. Just a possibility.

  21. The head to head and common opponent criteria come first. If neither of those criteria are met I believe the semi-state criteria would be next. In this situation you would be giving a seed to a wrestler who has proved in the past that they are a quality wrestler. If we went just by record you are not taking into account the strength of schedule of the wrestlers. Wouldn't the system be just as broken if we rewarded teams for having easy schedules?

  22. The update on that story today is that 38 people have tested positive from that event out of the 54 people tested so far. That’s a 70% positivity rate. Better slow your roll until everyone is tested there Chief.
