  3. Lots of wrestling action yesterday in the opening weekend of IHSAA wrestling - and no results entered?! Come on coaches - surely you can ask one of your assistants, managers or even wrestlers to enter at least the team scores after your matches? Joe has developed and provided an excellent free resource to support and grow the wrestling fan base.. and yet those of us that are remote have no way of tracking the scores week to week. As a wrestling community, if we want to get more support and reporting coverage - then we have to help ourselves out. It should take about 5 minutes (maybe 15 if you are a slow typer and you are willing to enter all the individual results) to go through your scorebook and hit the Submit button. Maybe someone can get some support from Robert Faulkens to encourage coaches to enter results for the betterment of the sport?

As a Dad, Uncle, and coach of these young men, I am super proud of their hard work, attitude, and dedication that has put them into this position. AC football kids that have wrestled on our HS team: Blake Heyerly, Alex Currie, Keegan Bluhm, Trevor Currie, Gavin Cook, Braydon Moon, Zac Wurm, Lain Lengerich, Ryan Black, Trace Sonnigsen, Keagan Combs, Cody Lautzenheiser, Gavin Arner, Jackson Becher, Wyatt Smith, Max Kaehr, Matt Heiser, Holden Schumm, Lucas Rumple. Be thankful, compete to your abilities, and enjoy the experience. Good Luck, Coach Currie

  9. Evansville Rankings will be out by Friday. Per normal I'll list some kids in multiple weights, I'll list teammates in the same weight (wait Conway and May aren't teammates anymore? Shoot!), and I'll sprinkle in some 5th year seniors. Oh and by Friday I mean I hope to have them out Wednesday. Good luck this year! The Dirty Dirty South will be rolling and collecting medals. If you live in the Fort Wayne area, skip the trip to Indy. If you live in the East Chicago Area, don't listen to the region hype all year it'll hurt even more when you get sent home Friday night by some hilljack from the boondocks, and if you go through New Castle.... I'm sorry.... Letttttttssssssssssssss Gooooooooooooooooo #MouthOfTheSouth

    Mo Omonode

Congrats to him, and tough break for WL Wrestling this upcoming season. He is an electric factory. If Mo does wrestle first semester, this does sets up a perfect scenario to have a real life Vision Quest.... Nearly went the distance in his first (second) year wrestling... Graduating at semester so he won't have a post season run... Can cut a huge amount of weight to take on an "unbeatable" foe (Cristian Carol)... Coaches could wear a polo under singlet to practice... @WestLafayetteWrestling

  26. By JEREMY HINES Thehines7@gmail.com Southport senior Nathan Smith is the sports editor of his school newspaper. With the success he had on the wrestling mat during the offseason, his own name might be the biggest news on his sports section this year. Smith competed at Virginia Beach, Fargo, Tulsa and various Indiana tournaments. He placed second in the Junior Men’s Freestyle Nationals at Fargo. In Tulsa he went 7-0 in freestyle wrestling and 5-2 in Greco-Roman. He won the USAW Brian Keck Memorial Preseason Nationals in Iowa. He also won the John Hurrle Memorial Invitational in Indianapolis and placed second at the IndianaMat Hoosier Preseason Open. “Nathan kind of punched some tickets this offseason,” Southport coach Nick Skinner said. “He had not been in a national final yet and he went to Fargo and finished second. That gave him confidence and let him know that he belongs at the top of the podium.” For Smith, it was the Fargo tournament that really boosted his confidence. “The finals made me realize I can get to anywhere I want to if I put in the work,” Smith said. Now Smith is hoping to bring some championships home in the Indiana state tournament. He has never won a title in the state tournament. He is a three-time regional qualifier, a two-time semistate qualifier and last year he placed seventh overall at the state meet. “I want to win state,” Smith said. “That’s the goal. I also think I’m about 36 wins off of the Southport all-time wins record. That’s something I think would be super nice to get, that all-time record. I have yet to win a county tournament, sectional, regional or semistate title. If I could get a win in all of those my senior year that would be really nice.” The Southport sectional has had some hammers in the 106-pound class – the only class Smith has competed in during his career. Perry Meridian’s Alex Cottey won the sectional in Smith’s freshman season. Cotton went on to finish second in the state meet. In Smith’s sophomore year, Roncalli’s Bryce Lowery won the sectional with Cardinal Ritter’s Joshua Johnson placing second and Smith third. Lowery went on to place fourth at state and Johnson placed seventh. Last year Smith lost to Perry Meridian’s Toby Billerman in the sectional final. There were only three wrestlers in the sectional bracket, but Billerman went on to place third at state and Smith finished seventh. Smith isn’t the type of wrestler that is always on the attack. He likes to feel his opponent out and learn from his style, then use the moves he feels will be the most effective. “I’m definitely a counter wrestler,” Smith said. “I don’t take a million shots right off the rip. As far back as I can remember I have never been one to go and shoot a lot. I like to feel my opponents out for a minute or two and then go from there.” According to Smith, he was able to make solid improvements this offseason as well. “I had a habit of sitting the corner, which is a unique defense,” he said. “It won me a lot of matches, but also got me into trouble. I’ve improved with my down blocking and I’ve been working on a more traditional defense.” After high school Smith hopes to wrestle at the University of Indianapolis and study exercise science. He is considering minoring in journalism as well. “I love journalism,” he said. “I’ve been on our journal staff for three years now. I was a sportswriter for two years and now I’m the sports editor.” For fun, Smith mostly enjoys wrestling and hanging out with his dad. “I just wrestle a bunch for fun,” Smith said. “In the summer, it’s kind of nerdy, but I love to go hang out with my dad (Greg Smith). We do all sorts of things. We watch football, go birding, biking or just walking. I don’t even know if I like things like birding, I think I just really like to be out in nature hanging out with my dad.” Coach Skinner says that Smith is a leader on and off the mat and a “really fun kid to coach.” “He’s just a good kid,” Skinner said. “He is intelligent, funny and he takes care of business on the mat and in the classroom. He gets the work done and that rubs off on everyone around him.” Smith is currently ranked third in the state at 106 pounds. View full article

  27. I'm mind blown at people not posting results...we are supposed to be promoting our sport...hiding the lineup isn't going to do anything for anybody if that's the thought process...if you don't have track wrestling i get it...but if you have track and use the stats program then you're already entering it all in, so it's not hard to post a screen shot

    Slivka

Carson had some complications due to the Covid vaccine. He has been cleared by the doctors and will be back on Monday. He and Slivka live together over there and are living there best life. 184 was a tough cut last year. Injured his ankle the week before MACs last year. Pretty sure he would have qualified for NCAAs. He’s locked and loaded look forward to a really good run this season at 197. Rocking a full beard. Looks like a middle aged man.

  34. It will be decided in December after lineups are more clear. Your placement at Team State in one year is not a ticket to the event the next year, unfortunately. 1A is very competitive at the top now. Having 5 seniors and 2 forfeits in your sectional lineup is very hard to make up for in the following season and the qualification scoring reflects that--favoring full lineups and favoring teams with most guys coming back. You had the second highest qualification score that didn't get in yet and the kids you did bring back are solid, so you'll be clearly considered and analyzed thoroughly those first few weeks of the season to see where you are.

  36. Martinsville's new room is almost complete. It will house 3 40x40 mats. Total room size is 42x120 5,000+ square feet. New mats are on the way. When I competed I had a room that was 30x30. Upgraded to 30x90 when I started coaching. Now we are in a 42x120. We have roughly 25-30 kids on the high school team. 40 on middle school. 40 on Elementary. All 3 programs operate out of 1 single room. It's the only wrestling facility we have in the district.

    Carroll VS Parris

No one has scored a single point on Carroll in his high school wrestling career. Let that sink in.
    5 points
  39. It's not the end of the discussion. Christian Carroll could absolutely beat Mason Parris. Parris may have more state titles, but Carroll has won many tournaments that Parris did not. He is also ranked #1 in the country prior to his jr year, which is something that Parris can't claim. I think it is likely that Carroll wins 220 last season if he had been eligible. As an athlete, Parris may have the edge. At this same point of their careers (both entering Jr year in HS), I think it is likely that Carroll is the better wrestler.

  40. Looks like Stevan Micic will go up to 141 this year. This pits him, Nick Lee, and Chad Red in the same weight class. These are three of the best ever from Indiana in the same weight class. It will be fun to finally see the Micic vs. Red match we always wanted and the rematch of Lee vs. Micic.

  42. Rumble at the Resort held at Belltera Casino in VeVay Indiana is a really fun event . The few years I went I had a blast, team well and my guys always got at least 3-5 matches in a 2 hour period..If your wrestler makes the finals they have a DJ who plays the entrance music of each competitors choice as they walk out with Fog, laser lights and ramp leading to the mat UFCesque entrance that has the finaliats wrestling up on a Stage under a spotlight... Former IN big Men studs Trizton Carson and Nick Willham met there 2 years straight in The finals and both had solid competition to get to the finals beating Other state qualifiers/placers.. there was always KY,IN,Ohio AND TENNESSEE studs that usually made their way there and wrestle for the coveted Spartan Helmet title... This all came together by accident years ago when it use to be Rumble on the resort until rain almost cancelled the event and Belterra saved the event last minute, and after seeing how well the event did at the Casino, the casino ended up wanting to make it a annual thing and now it's getting better and better each year... I also loved how the tournament was ran in the evening the years I coached my guys and had a lot more laid back atmosphere that lead to a lot of quality wrestling and had became one of my favorite off season tourneys to attend . Plus it doesn't hurt that after the kids are settled in the the adults can also unwind while eating good and losing few bucks on the slots..

  45. The increasing reality of the internet is subscription plans. Looking at other state websites almost all of them have some sort of subscription in order to view most of the content. IndianaMat has bucked the trend and continued to be a free site utilizing other revenue streams that pay the bills. One of our revenue streams over the past few years has been our extremely popular preseason magazine. This year we set a record with the sales which will help us add staff members and equipment to better cover the sport. However, with increasing coverage and content comes higher bills and expenses. This year we are going to implement our Silverback subscription program. Many of you may have noticed that some people are tagged as Silverbacks on the forum. That basically means they have purchased a magazine whether a physical or digital copy. With that perk comes the ability to view our preseason rankings. We are not going to stop there though. We are giving early access to all of our rankings to these people for the first 24 hours after each individual ranking set is released. As we move along this season there will be more perks added to this membership. If you do not want to purchase a magazine you can become a subscriber by going to the subscriptions tab at the top or in the mobile menu and subscribe. Once you purchase a subscription plan or a magazine you will be upgraded to the Silverback group. The cost is $10 and will give you access to our Silverback subscription plan for a year. There will be more perks later this year for members as we add more features to the website. Click here to purchase a subscription https://indianamat.com/index.php?/subscriptions/ Any questions can be directed to me via private message. Thanks!
