  1. In case you missed it on X or the college thread: Christian Mejia from Elkhart Memorial, Derek Blubaugh from Bloomington South, and Shawn Streck from Merrillville all picked up D2 national titles last night. Mejia had finished 5th twice before, was seeded only 3rd, and was in his final year of eligibility. Blubaugh had twice been national runner-up to his finals opponent, and had lost to him 5-0 two weeks ago, but finally got over the hump. Streck picked up his second consecutive title. Congrats, guys!!

  3. The first annual IndianaMat MessageBoard Hall of Fame class has been announced. Since this Hall of Fame is run by crooked media members we modified the rules right before the announcement. We are inducting three people posthumously and four via the vote-in process. Don’t be surprised if we change the rules again next year. Before we get into the inductees here are some of the general guidelines we have for this honor. 1. No admins or staff 2. Can only go in under ONE name 3. Been an active member for 5 years 4. Innovative and fun 5. All in fun We start the inductees with three people who left an impact on the board and have unfortunately passed away. The first one is grecoref aka Tom Clark. He came to Indiana from his native Ohio and became a full blown Hoosier. On the mat he was a very accomplished referee making his way to the state finals and also to a little tournament called the Olympics. On the board he was known to provide valuable information, sarcasm, wit, and humor. He was a friend to all and a great personality to have on the board. Our second inductee is The Ancient Elder aka Dick Neal. Mr. Neal was likely the greatest Indiana wrestling historian ever. In the days of paper brackets and snail mail, he acquired everything he could possibly get his hands on to incorporate into his Indiana wrestling book. On the board he always answered the historical questions and reminded us of the best wrestlers and matches of the years gone by. The last one to be inducted posthumously is Perseverance aka Eric Allred. Allred has a great story of overcoming adversity and making his life right. He was a huge fan of his son Silas and very knowledgeable about the sport and the kids Silas wrestled with. His passion for the sport and supporting others is very much missed. The currently active members are characters to say the least and have had a fun and important impact on our lively messageboard. It is only fitting that MattyB and Team Garcia are inducted at the same time. Both came on the board at the same time to wreak havoc and promote #TheCounty and mainly the “young guns” of Avon. They have continued to this day due to having sons still involved in wrestling or in the case of Garcia, just loving to stir the pot. The steel factory in da region kept RegionRat1 off the board for a few years, but he made a comeback this season. While he has stayed relatively anonymous he always loves to promote da region in his very unique regioneese. Most outside of da region likely believe the way he types is how they speak there, and they aren’t wrong. Last, but not least is the lightning rod they call General Heavy Handz. Of the current inductees he leads the league in most “vacations” from IndianaMat. Luckily for him, Mike talks Joe into letting him come back EVERY SINGLE TIME! He is never shy about promoting the SAC and his beloved Snider Panthers. View full article

  4. This past weekend I attended the ISWA event at Warren Central. I wasn't gonna do a review, but I had more than a few denizens of the Indiana wrestling scene ask me to do one. So, here I am. First, I'm not sure if these are the hot dogs that Warren usually sells, or if these are from an ISWA contracted vendor. Anyways, at first glance, the hot dog did not look appealing. It looked plucked right out of the movie "Nothing but Trouble" that starred Dan Aykroyd, Chevy Chase, and the late, great John Candy(who pulled double duty). I was ready to put buying this hot dog into my worst decisions of my life category, which includes getting married, accepting the Clockwork Orange therapy to avoid a curfew ticket, and eating a hot dog from Hanover Central. Fortunately, it wasn't that bad. It wasn't good, but, it was at least two steps above Alpo. 3 slices of pizza outta 8 Next weekend I'm going to Iowa, and on St Patrick's day, I'll be at Mooresville highschool. Hopefully the luck o' Irish will strike and the hot dog gods will gift me another outstanding experience at the home of the Pioneers. Thank you for reading.

  5. I actually feel like a lot of good things are happening off the mat. This weekend was high emotion, and that breeds tension. I saw kids that were finished staying to watch placement matches. Many of these kids weren’t from the same school, club, region or semi-state. I saw kids that don’t know each other talk and interact and support each other. I saw parents hug their kids and tell them how proud they were. I saw coaches tell a kid how much they’ve grown. I would argue there is more of that than the opposite. Bad things get a lot of attention, but I think we should focus on all of the good stuff instead. The future is bright in Indiana for wrestling. This tournament seems to get tougher every year, and that’s awesome.

  6. This! All of this is true and accurate..and there’s more factors too. Many have been mentioned already. i have been following this thread and enjoying the discussion. Here comes the purely anecdotal part…worth nothing I know, but just wanted to share. Background: I attended Hobart in the late 80’s and had the good fortune to be a part of 2 State championship teams. I know first hand the sacrifices and dedication it takes to be part of something successful at a larger school. (Only 5 classes back then). I have 6 sons, all wrestlers for a 1A school listed in Y2s list, out here in no man’s land. Wrestling was always the top focus for all my boys, despite participating in football, CC, track, and baseball. Their high school does not have a strong wrestling culture or history. We were blessed to have a coach who was working his azz off to build one, and had built up numbers and some pride, but that somewhat evaporated when he left. I sent the boys to some camps at Purdue, or even out in Ohio. My boys were very well respected in our area and experienced success at Sectionals and Regionals; however, upon multiple births to EC SS, they were all soundly sent packing…every time. My boys harbor no sour feelings about any of these things and take great pride in their wrestling accomplishments…so, I have posted all this to relay: I posed this very question to my boys (ages 29-19) and all but one responded with a resounding NO to class wrestling in IN. For them, one of the best parts about wrestling was finding out just who the absolute best is, even when they know it’s not them. One of my sons, who was a 3x ECSS qualifier, said it like this, “Yea, maybe I coulda made a deep run in a 1A state tourney, but I would have much rather went out on my shield at ECSS each time, knowing I was seeing the best in our part of the state.” It’s easier to experience success at a small school wrestling, presuming you work hard and do the grind, than experiencing success as part of a team at a small school. Reasons like commitment from fellow team mates, injuries, harvest, etc etc all factor in for small rural schools that require 5, 9, or 11 athletes. Now the success a kid experiences may not culminate in them landing on the podium at state, but it doesn’t negate the success leading up to the day they exit the tournament. Wrestling, ultimately is about preparing for life. The IN tournament is imperfect and downright mean sometimes. Just like life can be. I put my boys into wrestling shortly after their mom passed from cancer. My oldest was 12 at the time. Wrestling helped them through the grief and prepare them to have the tools to deal with adversity, challenges and also develop character, humility, perseverance, integrity, discipline and determination. 112 athletes hit the podiums each year in IN, which means there are a host of athletes who do not, but are the beneficiaries of tremendous gifts such as motivation, fortitude, humility, perspective, and reality. None of those are bad things. All anecdotal, and worth exactly what you paid for it!

  7. If we want to dig even deeper into this point: I think our whole culture teaches us that being happy is the meaning of life. Which is all well and good. But the way happiness is defined nowadays has evolved into this: "obsessively chase what you think should be yours so you can be happy for you." That's a counterfeit happiness--it's a rigid individualism and potentially narcissism. True happiness doesn't happen on an island. It happens in relationships and in respect of community. Relationships involve self-sacrifice--the opposite of "get mine for me." As a parent, I'm trying to learn better how to teach "chase your dreams" in a way that also involves celebrating others' successes. It's tough to do!!

  9. It was a great day at Mooresville for Indiana Wrestling. One high light for me was the amount of team members both boys and girls who came up to me and thanked me for having them on the team and how much they appreciated the opportunity to compete one more time. We really are producing some great wrestlers in our state and more importantly these kids have a lot of class and respect. Indiana Gold boys battled hard but came up short 37-22. Winners for the gold team were; Mason Jones Luke Rioux Tony Wood Chis Bohn Duke Myers Indiana Blue sealed a victory for our home state 35-27. Winners were: Gavyn Whitehead Griffin Sanders Carson Fettig Michael Cain Keegan Martin Tyler Schott Brady Byrd Josiah Dedeaux The girls beat Iowa 63-12, but came up short against Illinois 21-44 Double Winners for the girls were: Tola Aluka Sophia Buechner Rose Kaplan Leila Thomas Winner vs Iowa were; Tola Aluka Sophia Buechner Rose Kaplan Leila Thomas Kyra Tomlison Alexes Spaulding Kaylea Beauchamp Jaiah O'Neal Michela Clifford Portia Weaver

  10. Hey there everyone! Pardon the 3rd person description, I just wanted to give you a heads up that I will be covering the USA Wrestling Olympic Trials at Penn State. I'm briefly stepping out of retirement to attend the Trials as an approved media member and I wanted to give folks an opportunity to suggest/request questions I can ask the athletes participating, particularly those with Indiana ties. I haven't done this in the past, but what the heck! I'll have more information and articles to come, but please feel free to shoot me question ideas, even if they are ridiculous Thank you and I look forward to sharing this journey with anyone interested.

  22. So this year's state tournament was "fine" and you are no less a state champ, placer, or qualifier if you went to this one than if it was held at indy or somewhere else. However blindly acting like it was all sunshine and roses is silly. Evansville as a city did great. Most people found criticism with the IHSAA leadership. They could have moved the state tournament. Do it the same time as swimming. Ncaa does it all the time especially at the D2 level. It's a great atmosphere. . . It's also cheaper for most schools. 1bus, better hotel rates, AD only has to be in one place. Communities love it. Ihsaa leadership wanted to be at all the state events. Even came out and stated travel to and from the different sites on competition day was not something they were interested in doing. I think some of you would feel differently if your loved one was competing in this tournament for possibly their first and/or only time. Easy to blow off poor planing and tickets problems if you already have a "hookup" or you don't mind spending $102 on tickets. moving wrestling was the path of least resistance. Wrestling is a second class citizen in Indiana. It probably won't change until we get a "wrestling guy" on the ihsaa staff. So was this year's state tournament perfect? ? ? No... is it time to move on? Definitely Ps. Shout out to this 2024 class, Guys like May, Leavell, Ison, and Myers only got one "normal" year 2021- no fans present 2022- split parade of champions 2023- Normal year**** 2024 moved tournament

  26. We, as adults talk about the "younger generation" and the lack of respect and accountability, and then we have people that act like this with no consequence. The mystery as to why these kids act this way is not hard to solve, in my opinion. If you want your kids to act and carry themselves in a particular manner, you must model what that looks like when things don't go your way. Kids only know what they're taught and seeing the way some "coaches" and parents carry themselves, those aren't the lessons I want to teach my young people.

  27. Having spent a bit more time in Iowa over the past few months, I've spoken to quite a few other UI athlete's parents about how Iowa HS sports offered and believe there's some interesting tidbits that Indiana may wish to ponder. 1. Schools let athletes compete in more than one sport in a season. 2. Track and baseball are not in the same season. 3. There are four sport athletes (and a few 5 sport athletes) given #1 & #2 above. 4. Not every team or individual makes the post season, decreasing number of tournament weekends. 5. They play state final games and wrestle state finals series during the week due to multiple class structure. My kid wanted to play MS basketball but was told by school admins he had to choose btwn wrestling or basketball and wouldn't be allowed to do both. Choice made for him. During late elementary years, he really liked baseball. Could bang them over the fence before anyone else in Little League, but daddy ball politics soured that really quickly. Started wrestling GR/FR during "baseball season" and a few years later placed at Fargo... Do think that multiple sport participation can help combat burnout for athletes later in HS - often different friend/teammate circles, pressures/expectations are different, etc. However, if the kid desires to get to an elite level with aspirations of making it to college to compete, then extra time, practices and sacrifices have to be made to reach that dream. In Division 1, football offers 85 full "headcount" scholarships and basketball has 13; then all the rest of the sports have equivalency scholarships: wrestling 9.9, baseball 11.7, etc. So, if the goal is to go on a ride to college, play the numbers math -- baseball is not it if you're not a pitcher or Babe Ruth... My kid was lucky he had a choice whether to play football or wrestle collegiately in the B1G, but the wrestling training in the "off season" is what prepared him to be able to make that choice and specifically with the training that Chad Red (C-Red) provided which is so much more than what is only on the mat... So rather than pressure kids that have dreams to wrestle after HS to play baseball, run CC/track, etc., help them find a way to train and travel to get those opportunities presented to them through their body of work. When speaking to parents with young kids, I often suggest 1 team sport and 1 individual sport to narrow down to as they get closer to middle school which usually works except for baseball where the pressure is for year around training and travel teams. (There's a good reason DSG and other companies are heavy promoters of youth sports... hahaha...) The intense schedules of basketball travel & baseball travel are atrocious... At least w/ wrestling off season tournaments, you get to choose whether or not to go and it doesn't impact the team, etc. So, circling back around to the divisions question... How's this sound? Make 2 divisions, Eliminate sectionals Must qualify for a regional and add wrestlebacks (maybe throw a "true second" round in for seeding purposes and extra drama) & advance 3 to state Run state over multiple days w/ wrestlebacks but no true second round for state finals
    6 points
  28. Everything you are saying is correct...however, at a small school, it is difficult in good conscience to truly push kids to wrestle to get better in the spring. They are busy making sure our baseball, softball, track, and golf teams are as competitive as possible. How would I feel if the baseball coach was leveraging the wrestlers to start tuning their arms up in January? It would p*@# me off. And of course big schools also share athletes. However, if the wrestlers at small schools focus on one sport, the other sports don't do poorly - they cease to exist. Small schools are playing a differnt game. That's why team sports are classed. There is no difference for individual sports. Everyone has to block another individual in football. Everyone has to mark another individual in soccer. You get where I am going here.

His team is awesome, and brings Coach Frepans warrior attitude each time they walk onto the mat. Coach Frepans team will finish the season this Saturday at our conference tournament in Zionsville (another stacked tournament). 36. Ill point out that the bad news always gets more attention, so this isn't necessarily so. In my interactions, 99% of the time I see good sportsmanship, good behavior and people enjoying the sport. Just like our news, the negative makes a good story, but it sure doesnt mean that its the norm. Ive been around wrestling for years, and crazy ***potty mouth*** has always happened. Not sure what happened in the IHSAA event, but maybe handled wrong, but the IHSAA doesnt look kindly on stuff described. Im sure this was investigated and acted on. Guns are so prevalent, people love them, but still this is an anomaly. On the ISWa tournament, there was a lot of brotherly wrestling love this weekend. 99% of people were great, appreciative and enjoying themselves. Its like a giant wrestling reunion. Yes, there was some incidents from passionate people whose behavior could have been better. But I dont think the original poster knows the full circumstances of the situation described. I say look at all the good this weekend, kids of all ages learning sportsmanship, making friends enjoying competing. It overshadows any negative, and that crazy behavior is not anything new. Always some bad apples.

  37. Been saying for a while the top of this sport, and most sports, is becoming a little less accessible to blue-collar wrestlers/families than it used to be. Affordable access to wrestling opportunities and just simply the ability to travel (since many have parents who work a lot) is becoming hard for some families to overcome. Especially when certain events and academies are not within a short drive from the location you live in. It's awesome that some kids have the opportunity to make a major jump in their skill level. But a decent percentage of wrestlers are limited in what their family can do and really have to search for what rare options may present themselves if they want to make decent gains in their ability. Sometimes coaches have to be creative as well in order to help those kids get some type of opportunity. When the demographic of a large percentage of your team is within that socio-economic situation, obviously finding enough avenues to help them becomes a little more daunting. For several coaches, there isn't much of an off season anymore to start with, and then add on to that the legwork you'll also be putting into finding ways to help those types of wrestlers out so they can "shrink the talent gap."

  38. Last year: Tourney entries for Club teams: $600 Tourney Entries for my own kid: $1200 Shoes: $400 Headgear: $50 Singlets: $150 Hotel Costs: $500 (we don't do many out of town tourneys) Tourney Gate Fees as parent: $200 Tourney Gate Fees as a coach: $200 Medical supplies for athletes: $100 Gas: ?? At least $200 Food at tourneys: ??? At least $300 Club Dues: $1200 Coaching Card and Clinics: $300 I'm sure I'm forgetting other costs, but just with that we're at $5400 and my kid is only 10 and doesn't do a tourney every weekend yet even, let alone national tournaments. So I could see easily spending 10 grand year at minimum if your kid does national level events even 2-3 times/year. Also, is there a way to ensure this post is unable to be viewed by wives? Asking for a friend...

  39. I cannot express how sad I am to be reading this thread so late. Yes, we should absolutely have divisions. Small schools are not playing the same game large schools are and should not be competing against them in the same tournament. We don't make the team sports do that, so making the individual sports do it makes very little sense. You can search galagore for all of my other logic. I am too sad to post it all right now.
