  1. We are a week away from the Great Evansville SS write up featuring the Barry Horowitz Curtain Jerkers..... The Jeff Regional constantly gets slept on... .but what matches will want you to make sure you have your Heine Bros coffee early and in the door by 9:30am Saturday morning?!?!? 106 -Nolan Riley, Freshman Columbus North vs Brayden Walters, Freshman Salem 113 - Dakota Fields, Sophomore Switzerland County vs Hunter Pitts, Senior Corydon Central 120 - Eli Stewart, Sophomore Madison vs Eli Theobald, Junior Providence 126 - Collin Cain, Senior Jeffersonville vs Keegan Gross, Junior Southwestern - Ricky Bogard, Sophomore Seymour vs Noah Phillips, Freshman Charlestown 138 - Bo Wagner, Senior Columbus East vs Cole Bagshaw, Senior Silver Creek 145 - Jonah Mathews, Junior Jennings County vs Gabe Pugh, Senior Eastern 152 - Jordan Guerrero, Freshman Charlestown vs Sam Chandler, Senior Seymour 160 - Evan Bowling, Junior Salem vs Mitchell Williams, Senior Columbus East 170 - Skyler Maisttison, Senior Borden vs Evan Saevre, Sophomore Columbus North - Zander Hobbs, Sophomore Jeffersonville vs Ayden Waggoner, Sophomore Madison Don't Miss - 138 - The best weight class by far of the day. Some dirty Semis..... Don't Miss - Finals at 120 and 126 - Can the Corydon Connection of Owsley and Schreck keep the Panthers rolling into Semi-State? Lights out finals matches here as Freshman phenom Peyton Richards will go to battle w/ Jayden Owlsey and two state ranked wrestlers, #15 Zane Schreck and #9 Liam Krueger will battle for that big draw next weekend at Evansville. Don't sleep on----- Switzerland County, The Young Gunz of from Wine Country come into regionals guns ablazing..... But I still wouldn't sleep on ---- Bo Wagner, Columbus East, can he come back from a 4th place finish to Regional Champ? And don't forget - ---- The Home gym factor for Jeff, The Red Devils wrestle a tough regular season schedule and are always battle tested by state tourney time. Having Regionals at home is a huge advantage and every year an "upset" happens.... who will step up this year?

  3. In my estimation, a real rivalry has to stand the test of time. The more time that is elapsed, the better the rivalry. By that measuring stick, MD has two great rivals- Reitz and Perry Meridian. The Reitz rivalry is detailed in the previous post. The PM rivalry began in the late 1970's when Perry Meridian and Mater Dei competed in the same semi-state. Who could possibly forget Jeff Parkinson's 1981 controversial victory over PM's Steve Adams in the semi-state semifinal match? Legendary coaches Mike Goebel and Phil Strader had words with the referee and each other. Let's get it on! The state individual and dual meet series has been dotted by PM/MD dust-ups. Nearly every year, MD and PM boys bang heads at the Gainbridge in high-stakes matches. More than once, it has been for all the marbles. MD's coach, Greg Schaefer and PM's Middle School coach, Shaun Richardson went for the blue ribbon, under the lights. During the team state era, MD and PM delivered big-time for their fans. MD hung it on the Falcons their first three meetings at team state. The last IHSAA team sanctioned event was in 2012. The Perry juggernaut beat the 'Cats in the semi final and ultimately won the gold. MD fans had grown accustomed to winning this event. Losing to their arch-rival was a bitter pill to swallow. Three years later, the Wildcats returned the favor, beating PM for the IHSWCA title in 2015. It was a pinnacle achievement for MD, as this edition of the Wildcats have never defeated the Falcons at a grade school, middle school or high school level. For my money, there is nothing much more satisifying than beating PM and nothing much painful than losing to them.

  6. Q: How can we know how difficult it is to advance from a particular sectional or regional? We can look at the Genius ratings of all schools for the last several years and consider how many regional qualifiers and semi-state qualifiers they got while “controlling” mathematically for their sectional and regional path. Using all of these factors simultaneously, we can project very, very accurately how many regional or semi-state qualifiers teams of any given Genius rating “deserves” if they were in an average level tournament path. If we then add together how many regional and semi-state qualifiers the teams of each sectional and regional should have, we can know how difficult each tournament site is to advance from. Q: What are Genius ratings? Genius ratings are computer ratings that use the system on which all major sports’ “true talent” or “true ability” ratings systems are based. All Las Vegas lines for particular games, for example, use the score-based ratings system that we use to compile the Genius ratings. The ratings include all scores for all dual meets and tournaments in the IndianaMat database for the entire season. They are very accurate, very predictive ratings over the long term. Q: Once we know how many regional and semi-state qualifiers each tournament site “deserves”, how do we specifically control for their various difficulty levels? Using our “deserved” regional or semi-state qualifier totals, we assign a “Category” level to each tournament that corresponds with a “quota” of advancers per weight class that are assigned to that tournament. For example, a sectional that deserves 4 regional qualifiers per weight class is a Category 4 sectional. A regional that deserves 5 semi-state qualifiers per weight class is a Category 5 regional. We then award regional qualifier points or semi-state qualifier points based on each site’s Category quota (between 2 and 6 per weight class per site). Q: How can we award regional qualifier or semi-state qualifier points to 5 or 6 guys when only 4 really advanced? For sectionals, a Category 5 or Category 6 site’s individuals receive regional qualifier points for placing 5th or 6th place. For Category 5 or Category 6 regionals, we use tiebreaker criteria to award 5th and 6th place to individuals who are then awarded semi-state qualifier points despite not advancing in real-life. Q: When are the Categories assigned for sectional and regional tournament sites? They will be announced each season during the last week or two before sectionals. This year, they will be announced Thursday or Friday before sectional as part of the Team State qualification procedures document that is always posted to the IHSWCA website. Q: What about the “multiplier” that I heard about that controls for sectional and regional difficulty? The multiplier no longer exists It was a little bit less accurate and more difficult for tracking your own team’s score. Q: Why does my sectional have the same (or lower) category than the sectional we face at regional when we had just as many semi-state qualifiers as them when our regional qualifiers faced each other face to face? Your sectional, despite having just as many (or more) strong top-end individuals, was not deeper than the other sectional at the 4th, 5th and 6th spots at your sectionals. In other words, your sectional was not harder to get out of even though your best individuals are just as good or better than the other sectional.

  11. Heine Brothers Coffee is legit! Started with a single roaster and coffee stand at a Kroger in Louisville. We treated some family from Oklahoma to some Heine Brothers when North had a 3-way dual with Jeff and Corydon at the beginning of the season. Going to be some exciting matches. 138 is definitely the craziest. Could be some fireworks! 160 Boomer Hester (4 seed) could upset Trotter (1 seed). I believe that they have seen each other earlier in the season, right? Don't sleep on Saevre (4 seed) from North either. How cool would it be to have 2 4th seeds in the finals?

  12. MD / Central.... The BIG one I believe in in '93 at MD was absolutely insane. Hook tells the story quite well but as a Sophomore wrestling JV in front of a packed house it still sends chills down my back, I have goose bumps typing this. I can't remember who took the mat first but I can remember taking a warmup lap atound the mat, the sound was deafening. As we ran past the central crowd there was a small contingent of former MD wrestlers front and center on the visitor's side. All the old MD guys had their old gold warmup shirts on and you could feel the boos from the Central crowd along with the cheering section right at matside. I realize this is JV we are talking about but it was wrestling heaven! MD JV won the match handily, we had one guy lose and he was dejected. I felt sorry for him but proud that we won. The hard part after the match was that we didn't have a seat to sit in after the JV match. We tried sitting in the isle but the athletic director told us we couldn't do that either so it was standing room only for us little JV guys! Good times! That rivalry has since died down a bit but those memories will last a long time that was a migical year for a Mater Dei team that wasn't supposed to do much!

  23. All-time, MD is 45-2 against Castle. The two losses the Knights hung on the 'Cats occurred in 2009 and 2010. They particularly hurt, because MD beat Castle in the regular season, but was handed the pain during the team regional. MD fans are mostly respectful toward Castle wrestling. Bob Harmon runs a good program and is old school. Castle has a solid fan following and does an excellent job of hosting the SIAC and Regional meets. The Reitz/MD rivalry is now 70 years old. An in-person barnburner between the two in a packed gymnasium is something to behold. Mater Dei has lost one dual meet in its home gym since 1976. The loss was to Reitz in 2010. A few outliers aside, the Reitz/MD is a healthy and fun rivalry. Many community members have family and friends that attend or support the opposing school. If you like hateful rivalries, there have been a few in Evansville. In the 90's, Evansville Central and MD had top-five ranked teams. The wrestlers, fans and coaches had equal contempt for their counterparts. If you ever meet any of the combatants, they will tell you stories that will curl your hair. Recently, Reitz and Castle certainly had an INTENSE rivalry. I'll leave this one to Panther and Knight fans to elaborate.

Any word on whether or not things will be back to normal for Friday night, such as having 1 session, rather than 2? And buying tickets for Saturday? Will they still be online Friday, supposedly 10 pm, and #ticketgate breaks loose again and people can't buy tickets for hours? Will the elevator get crammed full at the Hyatt Place again?

Emami wasn't good the whole day, that win against Salkazanov was huge but then Salkazanov lost to Japan in the repechage too. obviously in a terrible shape. this was a good waking call for Emami, sometimes you can learn more for a defeat. Emami has all tools to become the world champion soon but just not yet.

  46. If we are talking true team rivalries, then it’s Penn and Mishawaka. Whether it’s at the palace or in the cave and/or the new gym, the crowd is electric and it’s a packed house every dual. Brownsburg and CP is clearly the rivalry of recent history when competing for state titles.

  47. Joe you are the freaking man. Thank you for giving this board some sort of normalcy and providing realistic solutions instead of throwing out ridiculous solutions. Those throwing out “outside of the box solutions” sound like trump suggesting injecting Clorox. Get real people. Realize that just a couple of years ago we got to wrestle our state finals and basketball got theirs canceled. Be grateful. Also be grateful for the nba all star game because it will provide insane amounts of outside revenue for Indiana as a whole.

  48. Best case scenario would have been Hinkle Fieldhouse. The central location and seating are there, although based on prior attendance it would be a tight fit. Balls States Worthen arena is already used for Gymnastics and Volleyball most years. It slightly away from the center of the state but has enough seating. Pretty much the same story with Purdue’s Mackey Arena. I honestly don’t want it squeezed into a HS gym that’s not accommodation to fans and atmosphere wise a big disservice to the wrestlers who qualify. I just wish the IHSAA was proactive with trying to work with the colleges on this at the end of last season when there was plenty of time to adjust things. I fear if they haven’t locked anything in by now many of the somewhat centrally located colleges would have already had scheduled set for next years boys/girls basketballs season and little ability to shift dates.
