I’ll just add this to show his character. When we got in the back tunnel, we hugged. Told him I loved him and was sorry it ended that way. His response: “Coach, I’m really sorry. I know the team needed my points today and next weekend”. Was tough for me to hold it together to be honest.

  2. I would love to hear some other uncommon success stories. Our 182 Tommy Hannon is a first-year high school wrestler. He hasn’t been on the mat since 7th grade. He is an all-state football player and All-American rugby player. He had a total of 32 high school practices under his belt and just punched his ticket to state today. He took a chance on wrestling as a senior and it paid off. His story is one I will tell for the rest of my coaching career. You don’t need 10+ years of experience to be successful in this sport. If you aren’t afraid of hard work and are eager to learn you can make it happen. Anything is possible. Tommy is Bishop Chatard’s first state qualifier since 2014.

  3. My one wish for the state finals is not bracket related. It would be to have the walk of champions with the entire group of qualifiers. I overheard one of my wrestlers talking to a teammate saying we have been teammates since 1st grade and I wish we could walk together. One is first session and one is second.

I'll add to this. Having a seat right by the BB fellas, couldn't help but notice how he reacted afterwards. Took his few moments to let it sink in(tough to see). Then when Dunn hit his 2nd headlock, his reaction was priceless. Then,Dunn hits another headlock and Miller is on his feet(as were most) and applauding his foe. This shows alot of character about the young man. Nothing but respect. And I'll add, this went for the whole BB team. Had some chatter with some of the wrestlers and a coach. Straight class.

It’s been a pleasure as a fan to watch you. I want to thank you for what you’ve contributed to Indiana wrestling and want to remind you that you are still a champion day in and day out regardless of how this season may have ended for you. You’ve got some of the greatest coaches in your corner who I know do a great job in not only making great wrestlers, but helping mold fine young men for society to have. So, I know without a doubt you’ll be one of those people we see down the line doing great things in life. I wish you the best and absolute good fortune in your next steps.

No one wants to go out like that, but yet it happens none the less. The metal of a man is how you come back from these unexpected setbacks and where you take things afterward. There is always more to come in life than your time on the mat. To all those ending their season earlier than a state title I hope you can one day see the benefits wrestling has given you beyond the final result. The true benefits of wrestling will always be more than just a state title. For Logan, and the rest, please try to measure the journey as a whole rather than just dwelling on the final match. The entire journey is what you will truly cherish and what will really impact the people you interact with in your life. Embrace the wrestling journey which only a few in life were willing to ever take.

Ayden Bollinger up 7-0 in the second period and pins Ocampo in the semis Neal Mosier hits a standing Peterson with 12 seconds left in the match against undefeated Holloway to get two reversal and two near fall to win the match 10-8 and punch his ticket to state! Braxton Russell is a sophomore and unranked, who missed half the season due to a stress fracture in his lower back, and gets 4th with a 4-0 loss to Buchanan and a 5-2 loss to Johnson (both ranked Top 10).

    1. It's such a brutal semi state that state champions/placers/qualifiers don't make it through the gauntlet. 2. This was the worst semi state experience I've had. The place was freezing! low 60's on the floor. Not good for wrestlers or fans. NO TRACK SCORES ON THE BIG SCREEN? No wifi? The announcer for the finals did not emphasize the wrestlers or their accomplishments. It was monotone announcing. On top of that, you could barely understand what he was saying between the music playing and the low quality PA system. Luckily, great wrestling made up for it. 3. Great job to Triple B and his minions for picking 12 of the 14 champions! Their picks were pretty spot on. 106-All four of these wrestlers can place next weekend with the right draw. Hockaday the favorite to win state. 113-Wow! Haines beats Seng with about 2 seconds left on the clock with a beautiful switch. Seng looked good though. Big win for Goss over Krueger in the ticket. 120-This weight started with 10 ranked wrestlers but only two ranked wrestlers actually punched their ticket! First, Miller goes down via headlock in the first round. Then a few minutes later, McFeeley upsets Zirklebach! That's one state champ and one state placer that didn't make it out of the first round! Oh wait, Egli goes down to Syra first round too. Egli won semi state last year with four pins! Tough draw for the talented young man. Cowden was beating the headlock monster Dunn 11-0 when Dunn threw the headlock and pinned him to punch his ticket. But he wasn't DUNN yet! HE then picked off McFeeley in the battle of unbeatens. Lykins handled Kessinger and Syra to punch his ticket. Gilbert gave up some stalling points to a battle tested Courtney and escaped with a one point win. Gilbert over Lykins in overtime in the semi finals and then Gilbert pinned Dunn in the finals. Gilbert is now 12-0 at semi state with two pins in the finals match. 126- Butler had a close match with Glenn in the ticket but separated himself from the pack with good wins over KT and Haines. 132-Ison and Schoeff battle it out again. I sure hope the state finals brackets don't have Ison vs Anthony on Friday night! Kresija with a quick pin over Hammack in the ticket round. Mooresville regional sweeps this weight. 138-Garcia with a statement pin over Hayhurst in the finals and major decision over Turner in the semi finals. Kid really turned it up since last year! Freshman Roudebush quietly punches his ticket. 145-As expected, Watson over Garcia in the finals. These two should place next weekend. Oliver with two big matches to punch his ticket over Smith and Lody. 152-Cicciarelli over May in the semis. DuPon punches his ticket as a regional 4th place finisher here. 160-Conway goes through Boe and Law to win. Throw in Newman and you have four kids who are more than capable of placing top 8. Boe is 38-1 and a terrible draw for any 2nd place finisher. 170-Another 3rd place finisher from Eville will get a 2nd place finisher nightmares is Khawaja from Floyd Central. Phillips is 40-2 and will scare any Semi state champ he draws Friday night. Baumman ahead of the field here. Farmer is underrated. Most of his losses are probably to Baummann and Khajawa. 182-Buchanan makes a statement over Henry. Henry is such a tough freshman. We have three more years of him! McBee gets a bad draw when Emerine dropped out. That allowed Regional 4th place finisher Alex Rose to punch his ticket! Look for Schroeder of Southridge to place. 195-Sollars, Purdy, Willman. Studs. 4th place regional finisher Higgins 16-16 tech falls Sam Allen 9-1 first round. Didn't see that coming! 220-Critchield cruises to victory. Morril and Farmer are both tough as nails. 285- Jones handles business. Johnson from Center Grove is only a sophomore but looks and wrestles like a senior. Beau Noland of North Knox finishes around 26 wins and 26 pins but one loss in the ticket round.

Bowl temp was set at 70 degrees but it is definitely closer to 60 on the floor close to the ice. One of the drawbacks of having events in an ice hockey arena. Our PA is on bandaids right now waiting on new components that go in our processors. Been on order for months and until then if we overdrive the system sound will cut in and out. You probably noticed it several times, as I did. I have no doubt by next year the sound issue will be a thing of the past. Fyi, the Ford Center has never offered free public WiFi, but I might know a guy that does have access to some things.

That’s awesome to hear. May as well cheer on the guy that took you out, especially if he keeps proving your loss to him wasn’t just some random fluke. It’s also great to see a wrestler in this position get back with his team and continue to cheer on the rest of the teammates rather than sulk alone for most of the rest of the event or even stop showing up the week after to help the qualifiers prepare. You need to take some time to internalize the magnitude of what just occurred, but afterward show that support and love to your teammates that have shed a lot of blood, sweat, and tears along the way with you. He was at least fortunate enough to earn his state medal previously, and so while I don’t know Logan personally from what I’ve heard about him I’m sure he’s wanting to do whatever else he can for some of his teammates to finally realize their dream this time around.

The level of this semistate is unreal. Looking forward to these guys dominating next weekend. Personally.. I didn’t realize that my son had the opportunity to wrestle the brother of a kid that my oldest had the pleasure to wrestle (as we both changes schools). Mr. Farmer and I had a chance to catch up and share some great conversation. I agree with Navy.. Farmer is underrated. Would love to see our 170s to finish 1,2,3 and 4. I will be rooting for all of those guys next weekend.

  21. I posted this back in 2017 but always good to remember this so I thought I would re-post. For parents with seniors advancing today or falling short of their goals there is one message that needs to be said...and that is "we are proud of you". These kids put their heart and soul into what they do and it's easy as a parent to lose sight of this sometimes. Be a fan and their biggest supporter and that's all we can do. It's a sport. It's a freaking blast and it will eventually come to an end...win or lose. To all that advanced and kept their goals alive all the best and bring home the prize but let's not lose sight of the journey to State. They are all winners.

  22. Today at Evansville, Bray Emerine was out at 182. This bumped McBee up to the 2 spot and Rose to the 3 spot. McBee went from a Clay Martin ticket round match to a Gunnar Henry ticket round match. Subsequently McBee loses in the ticket round, Rose qualifies for state beating Martin, and McBee has beaten Rose in back to back weekends. I am not saying that McBee would have 100% beaten Martin and qualified for state but... he beat Rose the past 2 weekends and had earned that better opportunity. Could there not be a rule in place, where when a guy is out... McBee can choose to go to the 2 spot or stay put? Then Rose can choose to go to the 2 spot or stay put. Then if both guys decide to stay put, they could just put the alternate in the 2 spot. I just hate to see someone have their opportunity basically taken away by something that was out of their control. Any thoughts?

Nathan Critchfield and Christian Carroll on the same side at 220 - sucks For the 2nd year in a row the winner at Evansville SS between Cheaney Schoeff - Brady Ison gets the reward of landing on the same side of the bracket as Zeke Seltzer. Schoeff finished 2nd at State last year after losing to Ison at SS. This year the result was reversed. Ison, finishing 2nd avoids Seltzer, but draws Elijah Anthony in Round 1 on Friday night. Unlucky draw for both.

    Sportsmanship

I witnessed a small school, that has never won an athletic state championship and most cant pronounce, move six athletes to the Semi-State level. Yet these kids were asked by fans of the opposite school during a Championship match to settle down when there were so few fans in the stadium cheering him. It left great impressions of that other school to be sure. I have often felt goosebumps when a kid who is obviously injured, yet get up and walk off the mat to being cheered by all fans. Yesterday, I witnessed a kid who was obviously struggling to walk and who had to injury default on the day, get booed by a very loud audience as he walked off the mat. Whether he was booed, or it was his opponent, it did not matter, I was happy he was able to get up and hope him quick recovery. He has been a worthy opponent to my son before and I wish him and his family all the best. These are just my observations from what should have been a great day, as I witnessed a lot of great wrestling. My freshman who lost in regionals came away stating that the stadium was a toxic place to be. However since it has been said recently, that the same things happen at other locations, we seem to be as one losing our American Spirit and it will have an impact on those young ears and eyes who are still developing their belief system. I ask, that we as parents and fans of these athletes, not only encourage, but with good spirit cheer them on next week, win or lose. I truly believe that at this level, there are no accidents, but hard work, sacrifices by many (athletes, parents, coaches, and others behind the scenes), and in the end desire of the kid to be on the mat placing themselves in front of everyone on the state’s biggest stage. That, in itself, should have us giving our respect to the kids who we see, not just our own. #StopTheBoos

  28. I swear we had this exact same thread a year ago when we all experienced the exact same issues. Chumpions Network seems like it's run by some middle school's media class. Mat 2 at FWSS kept zooming in and out at random times, then missed everything towards the sides of the mat. IHSAATV peeps....either partner up with local webcasters for these events or follow their format. The media conglomerate Berne Witness can do a flawless all day broadcast in full HD and not miss a second of the action. Chumpions Network yesterday for the FWSS looked like I was streaming on 56k modem in 1995 on Mat 1 and Mat 4.

  29. Joel Kennedy Monroe Central was similar at 220. Great running back and stud athlete. Came out as a senior and ended up ranked and lost in a last second barn burner to the guy who got third. Agree, it’s really only a thing at upper weights where strength and athleticism goes farther than lower weights.

My opinion open up and stop worrying who wins these Sectionals, Regionals, Semi. Both are to good not to . If in the future they meet up again . Just let it fly ! ** sorry my inner fan talking . Both are amazing to watch. Glad I seen them all going at each other . Now we wait for the most famous equalizer of them all in Indiana HS Wrestling . THE BLIND DRAW . As a fan of them both, they’re going to need it all and open up and then some vs. 2x Champ Seltzer . I think both will face him at some point next weekend .

  42. Carroll just seems to have superb raw strength. Although I think he us probably a technical wrestler, yesterday was mostly hyper aggression paired with brute strength. I think Grange did a good job slowing him down, fending off a few attacks and then starting to look for scoring opportunities. He did get to the legs for a 2nd potential takedown, but Carroll chest-wrapped him and flipped him over with raw strength. I'd love to see Grange vs Critchfield with the winner facing Carroll. Kudos to Juan Grange - he didn't back down a bit in an imposing situation
