  1. Yesterday, Evansville Reitz Coach Scott Ferguson achieved his 400th Dual Meet win as the Panthers Head Wrestling Coach. Coach Ferguson opened his 20th season yesterday at the Hill Classic and the Panthers finished the day 5-0. Congrats to Coach Ferguson on this great accomplishment!!

The Wildcats travelled to Columbus, Ohio on January 18 to compete in the National College Duals. Mater Dei rolled over, Lisbon, 56-12 in the first round, and Cincinnati Lakota East, 58-13, in the second round. Their last opponent, St. Paris Graham, was much more formidable. The national polls had Mater Dei at 11th, while St. Paris Graham was ranked second. St. Paris Graham was a buzz saw and defeated the ‘Cats, 39-15. The loss broke Mater Dei’s 116-match winning streak and handed Mater Dei its second dual loss in 253 matches. "If our streak mattered, we wouldn't have accepted this challenge,” said Mike Goebel. “We never talk about that. We just saw this as a chance to wrestle a quality opponent, somebody who will make us better in the long run.” St. Paris Graham was the real deal. Standard-bearer Blake Maurer lost only the second match of his career, a 3-1 decision to Joe Dennis. "It was a great match," said Goebel. “He (Dennis) got a takedown with two seconds left. We didn't question it when we were there, but when we watched the tape, Blake was clearly out of bounds and Dennis' foot was on the line. The match should've gone overtime, I guess. But that doesn't necessarily change the outcome. The guy was a bear. Blake will learn from it, go on and get better." "The guys came back to the room and decided they needed to work harder, and that's what they've done," said Goebel. "We didn't lose anything that really mattered, we just lost a match. But even at that, if we win all four of our close matches, it's a tie. And if we get those and Craig Weinzapfel gets the pin at 145, which we thought he had, well, we could conceivably win." Maurer faced an unfamiliar foe in his match with Dennis: Nerves. “To be totally honest, I was very nervous,” said Maurer. “The match was at Ohio State. I really wanted to go to Ohio State. After my warm-up, I look in the stands and there is Russ Hellickson (Ohio State’s wrestling coach) setting next to my dad. I’m like, ‘Holy crap, I need to get it done out here.’” Mater Dei tallied wins from Matt Coughlin, Craig Weinzapfel, Sam Wildeman and Chaz Schwartz. Schwartz won with an eight-second pin at heavyweight. The Wildcats were disappointed with their performance. “The whole dual was about ‘What ifs?’” said Craig Weinzapfel. “We had a bunch of one-point matches that went the wrong way. To not do our best was a real let-down.” In Paris St. Graham, Mater Dei found themselves sampling their own medicine. “Everywhere we wrestled, people always talked about what good shape we were in,” said Craig Weinzapfel. “That team (St. Paris Graham) was in incredible shape; incredibly strong. It seemed like they had the mentality that they were going to go as hard as they could no matter what.” “We were at the weigh-in,” said Wildeman. “I’m looking at this guy, and he is around my size (160 pounds). One of the guys on the team, said ‘No, that’s who Macke (125 pounds) has. The guy was huge. He was a man.” “Graham won all of the close matches,” said Maurer. “Their conditioning was better than ours. We had our opportunities; we just didn’t get it done.”

  6. You guys have seen 220 lbers and heavyweights wrestle, right? I'd rather have 138 and 139 as separate weight classes.

  7. I agree with everything! It's frustrating when you don't compare apples to apples. I don't know of a better way to go about selecting the teams for team state but I'm not super happy about the current way either. I think making it into a larger bracket and having it be two tournaments would be my pick. I'm assuming most smaller schools wouldn't mind this either. Top two from each region having top 10 teams from each area compete in a regional qualifier would be great. Doubt that would ever happen. Sectionals and regionals aren't the same across the board. I do truly appreciate the effort that people put into this process. It can't be easy. I realize that someone is upset every year. I do think team state is a way to grow small wrestling programs and it's vital to continue having it.

According to IndianaMat, former Evansville Mater Dei head coach Mike Goebel owns the greatest winning percentage (.975) in Indiana high school wrestling history. In 29 years, Goebel only lost a total of 13 times along with having two draws in comparison to his 540 wins. While he led twenty different undefeated squads, three seem to stand out more than any others: 2001-02, 2002-03, and 2006-07 all because they had at least ten state qualifiers. 2001-02 had ten qualifiers, six medalists, and one champion while going undefeated; 2002-03 had ten qualifiers, eight medalists (seven of which placed top three), and four champions, but one team loss; 2006-07 had eleven qualifiers, six medalists, but no champions, yet went undefeated. I am sure you could make a case for each team (my nod goes to 2003), but who would you vote as the greatest Mater Dei team ever of these three, or has the greatest team EMD ever produced not any of the above? Where do you rank 2021's record-breaking squad in EMD's history?

  15. I couldn’t agree more. Our dual record stinks right now, but we have also been without multiple varsity guys at both of our tournaments. Strength of schedule has to mean something too. We are 3-7 but all 7 of our losses are to 3A and 4A schools. We will get to see jay county on Tuesday

  24. A couple of other notes: Nick Lee won for Penn State Friday night beating #28 Carmen Ferrante 6-3. PSU had the flu run thru their team and did not wrestle Roman Bravo-Young, Aaron Brooks or Greg Kerkvliet. Reports said Nick looked extremely gassed in the 3rd period so it is likely he wasn't at full strength either. On 11/14 at the Jonathan Koulast Bearcat Open, Matt Lee at 165, beat 3rd ranked Julian Ramirez of Cornell 8-5. Ramirez beat National Champ Shane Griffith a week later in a dual meet. Ramirez lost to OSU's Carson Kharchla in the CKLV quarterfinal and is wrestling in the consis, assured of placing. Matt ultimately finished 2nd in that tournament, losing to a wrestler from Binghamton in the final

  25. I will put my 2 cents in on this matter!! There are may Programs that are deserving of an Opportunity to go to Wrestling Team State. I have watch these Programs multiple time this year already. Cascade has a very Solid line-up with kids that Compete every second on the Mat. Owen Valley is the other team I think is up and coming. The had a Great Football season and it has carried over to the Wrestling room, with kids caring and buying in to what the Coach presented to the youth 3 years ago. Quinn Harris and Steven Spicer are both former Wrestlers and are helping these young kids to learn and work hard. Which will in turn make active , disciplined young Adult . So , I say Thank you to them and look at the Scores and choose with a Biased ,Open mind to get the Best result for this Great Sport. Thanks Bigtoe19

  26. It is all about match-ups, especially early in the year when teams are trying to figure out their lineup. Frankton has got an invite to team state twice, placing as high as 5th losing to North Posey in a dual that came down to bonus points. We split matches 7-7, was an exciting dual and what it should be about. Fast forward to this year, we have 30 kids on our roster with some young kids, and some talent from top to bottom. Several options within all weight classes. Opening weekend Delta beats us, Alexandria beats Delta, and we beat Alexandria. It literally was about match-ups. I would say all three teams were not at full strength either with the best 14 kids in each lineup. For a small school, we wrestle a very competitive schedule, facing very few 1A & 2A teams. The Pendleton Heights regional is not a cakewalk by no means, especially with Cathedral, several Indy schools, Noblesville, Pendleton Heights, etc. Even the Elwood sectional is highly competitive from a team and individual standpoint with semi-state/state ranked kids representing several weight classes. We will continue to do what we do with our program, and hope the cards fall in place. Looking at the 1A qualifying teams and FF's within several of their lineups, it becomes frustrating for teams such as ours and others such as Cascade that could represent well at a 1A level.

The fact that you still are talking about our area and thing is more than we could have ever asked for. It’s almost been 10 years! But to answer your question… trying hard to make that list. I think we can do it sooner or later.

2003, no doubt. They only lost to St. Paris Graham that year. Would have smashed the scoring record at individual state if team scores had been kept then. I'm sure somebody with time on their hands can tally their team score.

  41. It is both exciting & unfortunate to see all 3 of these great Indiana wrestlers at the same weight this year. It is extremely interesting that Lee, someone who could easily be a multi-time State Champ ended his HS career with only one title. As a freshman he was just not ready to beat the senior 2-time defending champ Micic, who added a 3rd title after dispatching Lee. As a junior he faced off against 4-time undefeated in his HS career Red. What may be unknown to some is that Lee was injured that season & only wrestled enough to be qualified for the tournament. But that does not diminish the epic battle that we all got to witness under that lights. I would say that Lee is clearly the favorite amongst them now after his NCAA title last spring & his strong showing at the Olympic Trials. Beating former NCAA Champ Nahshon Garrett, 3-time NCAA Champ Zain Retherford & 2-time NCAA Champ Yianni Diakomihalis. But both Red & Micic have the ability to find the top of the podium as well. Let's hope all 3 have a healthy & successful year, & just maybe we see a 1-2-3 sweep by Indiana wrestlers - no matter who falls in what order.

  42. I don't see Lee losing to Red ever again. Not impossible for Red to beat him, just not probable based on what we've seen in college between them. In fact, I think a 100% Lee would have beat him in that epic state finals match. Micic vs Lee is interesting. Is Micic a full sized 141 after cutting to 57 kg (125 lbs) this summer for the olympics? Micic is very good, but can he withstand the strength and non-stop motor the Lee brings? I think Micic beats Red. I think he is just a better wrestler at this point. Just my gut. 1. Lee 2. Micic 3. Red

  45. Thank you all for the kind words! Ben Davis is going in a different direction, but that doesn't change what those boys are doing. That program is on the RISE and those boys are hungry. I cant wait to watch their continued success on and off the mats.

  46. Ben Davis would be crazy if they don't hire Quinn Harris as their head coach, young or not, he's wise and mature beyond his years and is a huge part of why BD has churned out studs and the culture is changing in that room.. I know for a fact he is dedicated as if he is already the HC! He's got his guys training in the off season and going to tough tournaments year round... we all know ppl aren't beating down the door for HC jobs in this sport so when you got a great young man like Quinn as devoted as he is, you better not let him slip away cuz I would vouch for any and every time.. He's tired of his boys being looked at like light work for opposition and is def got them heading in the right direction.. Give him 5 years and it'll be a whole new level in that room.

  47. So I've been reading my rule book and preparing for my test. It is apparent that there are officials that have not looked through the illustrations in the book.. at least not for a while. I'm sure I can look this up, but is there a requirement to keep up to date with current situations? Wrestling has evolved over the years and many of the positions, such as ankle pass situations, just weren't as common years ago. Just wondering of there was accountability for keeping up with current trends. To be specific, I have been told several times that in order for a takedown to be awarded, a wrestler must control the opponent's hips. This is common when a defending wrestler is on his butt and his opponent is on top of both legs, but has not yet crawled up the body to cover the hips. According to the book, this is a takedown, but I have seen it many times that a referee does not award a takedown because the offensive wrestler has not yet covered the hips. I do not intend for this thread to be any sort of area to complain. I'm just wondering if there are systems in place to make sure referees stay up to date.

  48. Why would anyone do anything to actually help the cause? Isnt it just easier to complain and not help?
