So me being the mother of one of his opponents of course I'm going to root for my kid.. But I would just like to say Jesse is an amazing wrestler and even better individual.. Jace did not finish his high school career quite like he wanted do to an injury he couldn't control happened and Jesse by no means had to reach out to him but he did. Jesse I don't know if you will see this but I would like to thank you and congratulate you on your 3rd 1st place finish! We love watching you wrestle and wish you the best in the future!

  3. Just came across this picture of Montgomery from Brownsburg talking to Heath from Leo after their match. I know a lot of these guys who wrestle each other are practicing together all the time and it’s amazing to see how much they respect each other. Does anyone else have any pictures or examples of instances like this?

  6. It doesn't matter if random fans remember who a "champion" is. It matters to the kids that win and their schools. High school athletics should not be about the wins and losses, it NEEDS to be about building up great kids to be GREATER adults. More kids participating in wrestling or other sports will never be a bad thing. Right now our participation is on a sharp decline and we need to get it back to a solid level. To what degree do we need to kill our sport to realize that this one true champion thing is detrimental to the sport? Do we have to lose 25 teams? 50 teams, 100? How many would open your eyes to an issue with participation in this sport?

  8. Most people won't ever understand small school athletics. It's easy to say just work harder. I've been coaching small schools for 33 years. It's been a struggle for most of them. We don't have the same opportunities as big schools. The lack of facilities, multiple coaches and practice partners are the biggest hurdles we struggle with.

  9. In my opinion. Coaches encouraging kids to do one sport only is the biggest issue to why participation in all sports is down.

  11. I think that Ty Mills was really good despite never winning a championship. He went 2nd, 3rd, 2nd, 3rd, and had multiple wins over state champs in his career, like Asa Garcia and Jacob Moran. Crazy that he was never able to get a title, I think the closest he got was his junior year when he lost by one point to Cayden Rooks.

  14. Would be exciting to see, while I've got these names up let's see what we would be seeing here: 106: Jackson vs Larocca/Rioux 113: Bahl/DeMarco vs Buttler 120: Lemley/Frazier vs Haines 126: Goin vs Schoeff/Ison 132: Roberson/Torres/Solomey vs Montgomery/Dalton 138: Mendez vs Garcia/Roberts 145: Kaiser vs Watson/Reynolds 152: Ellis vs Conley 160: Cruz vs Boe 170: Sneed vs Fuqua 182: Layman/Sues vs Buchanan 195: DeMarco vs Carrington 220: Bates vs Skaggs 285: Whitenack vs Jones This card would be ridiculously stacked, and there's even enough talented wrestlers to make a B team composed of mostly qualifiers and placers. Winner of the A team dual gets to call their regional the hardest in the state of Indiana. (With an exhibition between Tyson Nisley and whoever else wants it, NCAA hasn't been treating us D3 wrestlers very well and ya boy wants to wrestle someone)

Why have they been able to keep participation at a higher and more consistent number? Statically speaking, they are a comparable state due to the number of schools that support a wrestling program, yet they have nearly 3,000 more participants in a single-class state.

  24. Participation levels dropping 20-25% and a drastic increase in forfeits. Add to that all of the "fun" stuff athletic directors have to deal with in wrestling such as our weight management plan, hiring and finding coaches, and everything else. Wrestling is an easy target to get the axe when schools are looking to cut costs and headaches.

  30. Yea when I watched it live I never seen Baumann nod because I jumped out of my seat. Insane man. He could of easily wrestled to not lose and gave up a reversal etc etc... he wrestled to keep scoring insane. Just like when he was on top yea he got too high and kept giving up reversals which made the match entertaining but he wrestled to turn him/pin him. He didn’t wrestle to just ride him. He was always looking to score and wrestled loose I loved it. Ruhlman at 220, Jesse, Zeke, Hall were all very impressive but the most entertaining wrestler for me to watch was Baumann!

  31. And you could argue Reynolds as a 7th grader, and Hockaday, Brewer, Henry, Forrestsr as 8th graders all could have placed this year. Not to mention the smaller 7th graders like Dickman, Haines or the younger 7th graders Rojas or Day in 2 years that are placers and eventual champs. It won’t be #TheCounty as much as it will be #TheBurg. Their expectations along with their coaches are state championships, not placing. It will be a fun next 5 years! The wave is coming for sure.

  39. New Jersey is an interesting state. They have around 300 programs in the state and a one class system with 24 or 32 qualifiers for state. There was a time I asked some Jersey people about class wrestling and if the "big" schools dominated like they do here. They said no that the middle classes were just as competitive when it comes to qualifiers, champs and placers. So thus, me being me, I was VERY intrigued. What I found was that New Jersey doesn't have quite the disparity in big vs. small schools like we do. New Jersey also being a smaller more densely populated state also can help with kids finding good training and partners easier, but we really can't "measure" that as much. Here are the comparisons between both states. Note this is a few years old, but I'm positive that it hasn't changed much Indiana Average Enrollment: 971 Standard Deviation: 800 3 Class enrollment breakdown 1A: 0-570 2A:570-1120 3A: 1140-5000 New Jersey Average Enrollment: 923 Standard Deviation: 523 3 Class enrollment breakdown 1A: 0-672 2A:673-993 3A: 994-5000 Just for reference a standard deviation shows how close sets of data is. This means that in New Jersey most of their enrollments are within about 400-1300 students while Indiana it is 200-1700 students. Crown Point semi state: 106: Champ, SQ in Jackson and Cruz 113: 5th and 6th for Bahl and DeMarco 120: Champ and a runner-up 126: 4th placer Sam Goin 132: Three placers in this weight class alone: Torres with 8th, Roberson with 7th, and Solomey with 6th (Solomey placed third at this regional by the way) 138: Another champ, you all know who 145: 5th placer Ethan Kaiser 152: Runner-up, 6th place, and two qualifiers, all four wrestlers here made it to the show, Ellis in 2nd, Estrada in 6th, and Pollitt and Ponce make the qualifiers 160: Cruz in 5th and Salary qualifies 170: Sneed gets 8th 182: Layman places 5th, Sues places 8th, and Kwiatkowski qualifies (almost 4 qualifiers at this weight, LaPorte's Browder dropped a one point match to eventual 4th placer Estepp) 195: DeMarco gets 4th 220: Bates places 3rd 285: Whitenack qualifies So here we have 3 champs, 2 runner-ups, and 19 medals total. Maybe we call this the 6th semi-state?

We have a hall way with pictures of state qualifiers/ all-state followed by smaller pictures of Conference MVPs then on the other side team conference, sectional, regional and semi-state champs. then in the basket ball gym we have picture of individual and team champions and runner-ups. I'm not sure about state placers in general because all our athletes that ever placed either was 1st or second or was 1st or second in a different season.

    State recap

First and foremost, another great season wrestlers. Thank you and to our Seniors, I wish you the best in your next journey. You have not disappointed. 106- ACTION Jackson was all business from the get go. This sophomore is going to be fun to watch the next couple years. 113- 4X time state placer and now 2X time CHAMP wasn’t about to be denied. Junior Ruble wrestles hard and as a junior, we will see him again next year for some more excitement. 120-Great hand fighting while on their feet. But Lemley was just too much on top. He had over 3:00 ride time against a solid Frazier. 126-One of the most solid wrestlers collects himself another title. Seltzer was too much for a talented Schoeff whos now been under the lights as a freshman and sophomore. 132-As a southern Indiana guy, this was a tough one for me. One side wanted me to have Freeman win for us southsiders, but I’m not one bit disappointed seeing Montgomery finally put his name in the books. I’ve enjoyed watching him at SS each year. His intro during the face offs showed just how excited he was. I don’t know him personally but you CANT love or root against a kid with that type of character. Best of luck to both he and Freeman on their next journey. 138-MENDEZ MENDEZ MEMDEZ What more can be said other than we are witnessing history again. As only a junior, he’s coming back to join such a small rank in Indiana rich wrestling history. Also coming back is his competitor, sophomore Ruhlman. Great job getting under the lights kiddo. 145-Zionsville collects their very 1st school CHAMP in Wagner who just had a bigger gas tank. Watson came out strong but couldn’t keep up the pace that Wagner was forcing. No knock on Watson. 152- Conway and Ellis has some great scrambles and the 3rd period didn’t disappoint. But they needed extra time to settle the score and Conway gets the takedown and his name in the books. Great match 160- Quite possibly the most exciting match of the night. We seen all the tricks in this epic battle. Some great scrambles. Just when we thought Baumann was going to ease through the match, Majors counters with a spladle or a key lock. Only to see Baumann battle through it to throw a mean lat drop and secure not only his 1st title but clinched the Team title for EMD. EPIC EPIC BATTLE gentlemen. 170- Here we have our 2nd High school East Central capturing their 1st CHAMP. HALL didn’t waste much time and secured the fall in under a minute vs a stout Morril. 182- Sollars was on a mission and showed his SS win in the battle of the unbeaten vs Buchanan wasn’t a fluke. Solid riding with knee blocks helped keep Buchanan grounded. Great news for us fans, they’re both only Juniors and we get to see one more year of them. 195- And yet another school Indianapolis Luthern captures their first CHAMP. FILIPOVICH is a stud and bested another hammer in Carrington. For some big fellas, they were very athletic and had a lot of exciting scrambles. 220- what a display by Ruhlman. Who has jumped 3 weight classes, 50 lbs and comes in to put his name in the record books like Ruhlman just did. I know there’s been wrestlers picking up 15-20 lbs but NOT 50. Am I wrong on this one. Not only did he capture the title, but finished UNBEATEN. 285- Tye big fellas put on a great show. Some power was shown in throws. Athleticism and balance for 285 was put on display in some scrambles And they battled till the final whistle. OL IndianaMats own @Y2CJ41had his big man ready to sit at the top. Muncie comes out in top but I think all us fans win here. In the end, we had 3 schools capture their FIRST EVER School CHAMP. While we’re going to be losing some GREAT Seniors, Indiana wrestling is solid right now. We seen some PHENOMENAL wrestling from freshmen sensations like Ison, Leavell, May, Demarco, Tishner. Then a plethora of Sophomore studs. Thank to the coaches and parents during this troubled year(Covid) to help make all this happen. Job well done.
