  1. If you don't like how Indiana runs the tournament series, then move back to your former state. Everyone agrees we need wrestlebacks, but to call "some" state qualifiers below average is not right. They earned their trip to state and I don't think any of the 224 competing next week are less than average. Kyler Kearby Tippecanoe Valley Coach to one of those "below average" wrestlers I am sure you are referring to.

  4. I’ve personally experienced both sides of the argument. I’ve been in The most difficult semi state and drew into the eventual state champ. And I’ve been the winner of the best semi state and had two easy matches to start the state tournament. . Soo I just think it is what it is. Those kids who step up and wrestle well when they have too, will reap the rewards. I don’t understand the argument to have classes. Every weight class should have a champion, not several. I think the goal in wresting Is to figure out who the best kids are at each weight. Our system does that

  6. Everyone has their opinion. First I must thank Indiana Wrestling for allowing us a season when many other states did not. In August if you would've asked me about a season I would have told you there was no chance well happily I was proven wrong today. I will say as a former wrestler and now a coach YES, the system sucks, kids don't get the shine they deserve, but its is the system we have had for how many years? You can bash the IHSAA all you want but every school and every kid is playing under the same rules, top 4 advance. Are some semi states not as deep as others, sure. Are some weights not as deep as others, sure, BUT every year when you leave the state finals you know the kid at the top of the podium was the best at that weight for 4 weeks. We are a single class state finals which is the absolute BEST part about our state tournament series. My favorite part of state is seeing a small school get kids to state and even to the finals. Could the system use a change OF COURSE, but it is what we have and we are wrestling that is a lot better than most right now. Again thank you to every single wrestler, coach, parent, and fan that made this season possible. I love Indiana wrestling good luck to all of those still competing next weekend!

  7. Andrew King has seen plenty in his 35 years a wrestling coach at Oak Hill High School. Indiana High School Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Famer King has enjoyed more than 450 dual-meet victories and lots of in-season and postseason championships. But the 1981 Oak Hill and 1985 DePauw University graduate had never seen the Eagles celebrate an IHSAA semistate team title until Saturday, Feb. 13 at Memorial Coliseum. “The pieces all fell together,” said King moments after his team hoisted the trophy. “It’s a great feeling for Oak Hill. “Most people don’t know where Oak Hill is.” The Grant County school of about 520 students is located in Converse, Ind. Oak Hill’s first semistate crown came on the day the Eagles had two individual semistate winners — 152-pound senior Aidan Hardcastle and 138-pound junior Brody Arthur — for the first time.Hardcastle (36-0 on the 2020-21 season) pinned South Adams junior A.J. Dull in 5:26, bested Huntington North senior Julian Fletcher by 13-2 major decision and edged Adams Central junior Alex Currie 2-1 before besting Carroll senior Evan Ulrick 5-2 in the finals. Arthur (38-1) scored four pins for his semistate championship — Carroll junior Jared Landez in 3:13, Lakeland junior Ben Miller in 2:11, Columbia City senior Jarrett Forrester in 2:58 prior to Daleville junior Julius Gerencser in 1:38 in the finals. Seniors Jett Thompson (second at 182) and Harper Dedman (fourth at 126) were also placers for Oak Hill. Thompson goes to Indy at 34-4 while Dedman is 27-4. Senior Julian Perez (120) and Freshman Tyson Kendall (106) also represented the Eagles at semistate. The top four in each weight division advanced to the first round of the State Finals Friday, Feb. 19 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. King talked about all the time put in my his wrestlers and their parents, grandparents and siblings. “That’s why makes a great wrestling program — the families that are involved,” said King. “It’s a family affair. “I”m proud to be a part of it. That’s all I am — a part of it — and everybody plays a part.” With 76.5 points, Oak Hill finished ahead of Western (67.5), Northridge (64.5), Fort Wayne Carroll (63) and the rest of the field. During all his years of coming to the semistate, King has seen the larger schools earn team titles. “I like to say that wrestling is classless,” said King. “Whether you’re a big or a little school, we’re all in the same boat.” In 2020-21, Oak Hill, Western and Kokomo finished 1-2-3 at the Oak Hill Sectional. Western, Wabash and Oak Hill took the top three spots at the Maconaquah Regional. “We love to hate Western and Western loves to hate us,” said King. “We thrive on it. Steels sharpens steel.” Like everyone in the athletic world, Oak Hill has had to deal with COVID-19 issues this season. “I’m a lay coach so when I come to school I have an open mind,” said King. “I’m not going to get mad about it. I deal with it as it is. “I walk into the school and see my athletic director (Ryan Fagan) coming down the hallway and I cringe because he’s going to tell me which two, three or four kids are now out of for the next 10 days because of social distancing. You just do what you can each day. We’ve had our challenges with that. but our kids have been really good.” Oak Hill has been extra-diligent about keeping the wrestling practice room clean. “We’ve gone overboard spraying down the room before practice after practice and in-between practice,” said King. “You can only have one practice partner, you can’t have three, four or five (because of contact-tracing protocols). “We have to keep doing what we’re doing.” View full article

  13. A slam is a judgement call., The big part of what the rule states is that when someone picks the other person up they are responsible for their safe return to the mat. The safe return is purely the responsibility of the offensive wrestler, and there is no requirement for the defender to protect himself. Years ago there was the criteria that the offensive wrestler had to hit a knee first, but that was discarded a long time ago. The slam is a needed call in wrestling because it keeps someone from intentionally drilling someone to win a match, or to make it harder for the opponent to compete. The thing that makes it bad is that whether a kid can continue competing, or not, is dependent on a decision that has to be made in 2:00 minutes of "recovery time". The only person the coach is responsible to is his wrestler. If he thinks that the slam has impaired his wrestlers ability to possibly win the match then his best decision is to not continue. The ability to continue, or not, only has to do with what is going on in that match and has nothing to do with the rest of the tournament. Postulating if the wrestler may be able to compete later, or not, has no (and should not have any) bearing on the decision at that moment. The wrestlers ability to wrestle in matches later in a tournament only indicates that he was able to continue with more recovery time, but proves nothing as to the severity (or lack of severity) at the time the match was ended due to disqualification. I would also add that I have almost never seen a match where to person is DQed for a slam and his coaches, fans, and family were happy.

95% of the time it would seem that the bad draw is drawing into an EMD wrestler as opposed to vice versa. I'm sure most everyone else in the state isn't happy to draw into an EMD wrestler. Especially, when it was the Lee factory for about 6-7 years. Which speaks to the greatness of said program.

Said drunk mullet Jay County fan was too incoherent to even notice. Then again, it only takes 1 to gently glide from the upper deck all the way across the mats into the opposing seats of glowing green of Cathedral.

    State Finals Talk/ Draws

I’m sure someone with time during this weeks snowfest can work through the brackets based on current rankings to speculate how the team scores could play out. But yes that and the 113 first round matchup doesn’t do much to help EMD chances.

    State Finals Talk/ Draws

We have had a few crazy state draws in the past after someone injury default to 4th spot at SS. I can’t remember specifics, but I seem to even recall one year where someone pulled a decent SS final upset over highly ranked wrestler, but their reward for it was the #1 ranked wrestlers who defaulted to 4th at his SS. Talk about going from the feeling of really helped your chances of a high placement to then the bracket-gods brining you crashing back to reality.

  38. I think there should be true wrestlebacks to third at every qualifying tournament. However, the single class tournament is 1) a gigantic money draw for the IHSAA 2) one of the greatest experiences in high school sports and 3) you know you're the dude when its over. Classed wrestling will destroy the Indiana state tournament. But there should be wreslebacks.

  43. If he can stick Buchanan like that he has the ability to beat anyone. I know when I do my pickems that Gabe Sollars will be the state champ on my picks.

Can someone explain how a mat video changes by round ? At ECC mat 3 buffers constantly for first 3 rounds , Mat 4 was messed up as well for a couple rounds . For the final round , mat 2 was frozen for the last few matches . I thought I heard somewhere , there were trackwrestling experts at each semistate . It's frustrating to pay for something and not get it .

  47. Welcome to Indiana. Maybe before you criticize everyone on here, you should educate yourself about our state tournament history. Everyone agrees that we need wrestlebacks. We’ve been arguing for them for decades. But the IHSAA won’t listen and won’t add them. The coaches propose it every chance they get. Every person that moves into our state says the same thing as you. This is what we have. We are doing everything we can to change it. Sorry you couldn’t handle it.

  48. Great match at 145 for the final at Jasper. Reynolds beats Watson And....I love that the reff's seemed to be confused on a call and the kids on the mat laughed it off and were clearly confused on the call and trying to talk/work it out for themselves. Two great young men, that showed a lot of sportsmanship
